 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Pleases.

You know what is wrong with a 3 day's off in a row? I put off everything thing because I can do it tomorrow! Bang Head In other words I really did nothing! Napped, stay off my feet (a plus) and worked on the rail plan for Paul in George and that is about it.

Looks like I am losing my power supply again for the Digitrax SEB! Bang Head Whole layout just shut down and I was only running 5 engines.(4 PK 1000's and a PCM Y6b) Reason I think it is the power supply and not the DB 150 is the power light goes out on the DB150. Unplug the power supply and turn the system back on, off they go!

A lot of the time I wished I stayed with the Bachmann E-Z command and the MRC 8 booster. But then again, I would not be able to use my PR3 and Decoder Pro to run the trains with my computer.

 See you all later, Ken

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a nice hot cup of decaf for me please.

Today turned out to be a good one around here for the most part.  I checked the Sunny Boy inverter down cellar right as it was shutting down for the day and it had generated 8.99 kWs today.  Not great, but not terrible considering the cloudiness this morning.  Yesterday the Code Officer told me he had been sent to NYC to take a training session on Solar Voltaic Installations as the city is seeing so many of them recently.  He told me the instructor related a story about a man who lives just outside NYC right next door to a large factory.  He had proposed the panels be put on a spot on the guys roof where it would generate the most power.  The man told him, no, I want them over on this roof and argued with him.  He asked the man since he was paying good money to get his advice why he was insisting on going where the light wasn't as good even though it would still work.  The man had him go over and look up at the factory and notice the huge lights they had that come on at sundown.  The guy had already done some testing and found he would be generating electric 24 hours a day if they put the panels where he wanted them.  He is making 30% more power than expected by using the light falling on his house from the factory lights...  Cool, huh?

Been doing more stuff on the mountain scenery for behind the tracks back in the corner...  These were taken tonight with the module sitting on the tracks of the new yard.

More in the WPF thread.

Hey Ken... Why do violinists put a cloth between their chin and their instrument?  Violins don't have spit valves.

Later!

I'm back, and with 500+ pictures, 3 con cor N scale Np passenger cars and multiple ideas. Also some cool stuff like a pair of conspiracy theories involving a pair of NP steam locos that collided during WWII and are still listed as in service, also a pair of Milwaukee road steamers which were new got contaminated by radiation and were buried in a hole somewhere in hanaford probably still as good as they were when they crashed.

Evening All,

Left the club early and took MOH out to dinner and our daughter met us so it  was a nice time.

Tomorrow I plan on putting KD couplers on my FP7 A/B set. I thought I had already but evidently not. I am also going to retry to load JMRI on my lap top. I have it running on MOH's  laptop but was unsuccessful with mine.

I was pleasantly surprised tonight. I discovered that 1 of the BLI cattle cars that I bought at the show actually has sound (cows)Smile, Wink & Grin. So for $40 I got 4 of  their cars and 1 with sound. Great deal.

Ray- Those are awesome looking rocks.

I have a DCC question for the knowledgeable here. I have a Athearn Genesis F7A coming in next week. It  is DC. I have never done a DCC install before (this will be motor only). I looked on the Digitrax site and they say to use the DH165AO (a board) and pull out the existing board and replace with theirs. In a case like this do I need to pull the motor to isolate the bottom of it? Any help would be appreciated.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Good evening everybody...... I'll have strawberry shortcake, please.

Curt .... I have installed the asme decoder in Genesis F3A and F3B units. .... I referred to these instructions from Digitrax. Their example is an Atlas GE U33, but that does not matter. I soldered wires to the tabs instead of using the plastic retainers. Also, I added the Digitrax Soundbug to each, and it worked very well. The motor is already isolated.

Speaking of DCC, I am embarrassed to say, I had a dumb short circuit that shut down the syatem. It is fixed and working fine now.

Toto, follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Diner..

Morning Coffee in the Diner

GOOD MORNING!!!

It's Chilly in here, but I sparked the furnace and will soon be as snug as a bug in a rug...SO:

SNUG AS A BUG IN A RUG:

Meaning:

This phrase first appeared in print in 1769 - more on that later. In order to trace its etymology we'll need to check out what was meant by 'snug' and 'bug' in the 18th century.

'Snug' was first used to mean 'neat; trim; well prepared' and referred specifically to ships. It is used that way in Captain Wyatt's recounting of The Voyage of Robert Dudley, circa 1595:

A verie fine snugg long shipp

In 1630, John Lane wrote The Continuation of Chaucer's Squire's Tale and referred to another meaning for 'snug' - or possibly simply a modified form of the earlier meaning - the one we use today, i.e. 'comfortable and cosy'.

Snugginge they in cabins lay each one.

Etymology meets etymology in tracing the origin of 'bug' -  not an especially productive meeting as it turns out, as no one is entirely sure why insects are called bugs. Before they were insects, 'bugs' were  ghosts or ghouls. The Coverdale Bible, 1535, referred to 'bugges' in that way, in Psalms 91:5:

So yt thou shalt not nede to be afrayed for eny bugges by night, ner for arowe that flyeth by daye.

How 'bug' became used to mean beetle or grub isn't clear, but we do know the meaning was in use by 1642, when Daniel Rogers published Naaman the Syrian:

Gods rare workmanship in the Ant, the poorest bugge that creeps.

You might think that the extended version 'as snug as a bug in a rug' came about in a 'been there done that, got the tee shirt' kind of way. In fact, the longer version is the original. The first known example of the phrase in print is found in the account of David Garrick's celebration of Shakespeare Garrick's vagary, or, England run mad; with particulars of the Stratford Jubilee, 1769:

If she [a rich widow] has the mopus's [coins or money], I'll have her, as snug as a bug in a rug.

As 'rug' has entered the equation, it's worth looking at the origin of that too. 'Rug' is a Tudor word with the same source as 'rag', but Henry VIII wouldn't have walked on his rugs as they were originally thick woollen bed coverlets - pretty much what we would now call blankets. It wasn't until the early 19th century that rugs were put on the floor. The first of their kind were hearth-rugs, as referred to in Londinium redivivum; or An antient history and modern description of London, 1803:

The antient hall is rented... for a carpet and hearth-rug warehouse.

The link between rag and rug is a close one - rugs were made from rags. Not so long ago, certainly within my memory, hearth-rugs were made by pulling strips of rag through sacking. These rag rugs, or peg rugs as they were also called, are still not difficult to find in the UK.

The format 'as X as Y' runs though the English language and there are many examples. The 'X' in question invariably refers to a property that 'Y' typically possesses. It's hard to imagine a place more congenial for a bug to snuggle down than a warm hearth-rug. The first such 'bug in a rug' was probably a cricket; these creatures are attracted to warmth and congregate in buildings around ovens and open fires.

The Prayer Candle will be lit at 8 AM for those in need.

Have a Great Day!

Good morning. It's 63° with 88% humidity. It'll be mostly sunny with a high of 85°.

Only set plan for today is to clean up the layout some. If I feel up to it later I'll go mow my parents yard. Other than that there's nothing going on here.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday Breakfast Buffet please. Thank you.

Let’s seeHmm…., do I wanna, ya why not. Ah, that’s what I thought, Patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 74Yes. I thought the weather was gonna warm up and dry out a bit for a few days.

Not feeling all that well this morning. Thinking it might be Malaria again. Or…Confused…, could just be a gas bubble.

Welp, gotta dump some Pine-sol down the kitchen drain. Gnats are backGrumpy. Yestarday I started to lay a bit of the tile for the shower I can do without the rest. Just to kinda keep Brenda from going nuts. She mentions everyday if the website shows the tile is in yet. I say no, estimated ship date is still the 24th. Last night she finally picked up on the estimated ship date. Not happy. I was wondering how long that would take. Kinda thought she’d grasp it on the 24th when I explain it because she threatened to rip the throats out of each and every person at Menard’s because the stuff isn’t in. So, I can do a small amount of tile work I suppose. That little stub piece I had to make so the door that caused all this would fit can be done without affecting the inside and any unforeseen issues arising from any noticeable differences in the tile arriving and the tile I have. Something she understands and agrees with I might addConfused. What I don’t get is why then, every other day she asks why I can’t put up the tile I have. To which I say again, “because yada yada yada….” She then says, (holds up finger. INDEX finger) and I quote…(ahem) “ya, ya I know all about the colors and the maybe not matching size. I understand that. You don’t have to keep telling me. Look, just listen. You're not listening. What I’m saying is, I don’t see why you don’t start with what you have. That way it’ll be part way done and that much less to do when the other tile comes in.” Now I ask you folks. How can you respond to that.  Maybe I should have married a Chinese girl. At last when I didn’t understand what she said there was a reason.  Welp, gonna let the dog out and wait for Brenda to get up afore making any noise. Think I’ll kinda do things leisurely today. Yes, that sounds good.

Ah…… Gas bubble.Whistling

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Jeremy, thank you for your bravery in "coming out" about your bi-polar issues.I only recently found out that I have suffered most of my life from PTSD due to being an only survivor of an aircraft accident when I was flying co-pilot when I was only 19.Now I am almost 72 and I wish that I had known that  PTSD left untreated only gets worse with age.I only wish that I had known all that years ago.  It is only through people like us willing to come out about these things that it will ever really change.Cheers!  Morning Folks

 Coffee pleases, thank you Flo.

All most time to get ready for work. Sigh Well it will be a sort of short day with us closing at 6:00 PM.

Did not sleep well last night. Was sick to my stomach and antacids did not seem to help much, so I spent a few hours sleeping up right.

Was looking at Paul's layout plan this morning and I see a few things that need to be changed. Funny, it looked fine while I was drinking Beer last night! Smile, Wink & Grin

The Digitrax SEB shut down again a few minutes ago! Bang Head This time I was only running 2 PK 1's, then for some reason, it restarted on it's own? I all most wish it would just die, so I could figure out if it is the power supply or the DB 150.

  See you all tonight!

Morning All,

Sitting here drinking a coffee thinking about starting the MRR things I want to do today. I have a MRI scheduled tomorrow morning that they said would take about 30 minutes.

Garry- Thanks for the info, it was confusing meDunce

Todd- I still feel your pain with the tile. It sounds like MOH is a lot like Brenda when it comes to projects.

Ken- Can you borrow another power supply from someone/somewhere for a short period of time to figure out  the issue?

Hope everyone has a great day and prayers for those in  need.

  Morning All,

Currently 50 with an expected high of 67 under partly cloudy skies.

Wife contacted a staph infection and they had to remove her Power Port and Pick-Line, so now she has just one IV where she is getting TPN and antibiotics. Next round of Chemo has been delayed until infection clears up. She is tired, going on the ninth week in hospital this time.Sigh

Today I need to charge the battery in my truck and her VUE, as I have not used either in the past two months. Forgot they need to be driven every once in awhile. Then shut down the sprinkler system for the winter. Maybe go to hospital if she wants me too, yesterday she said we should not visit unless she called. If I do not goin, and I get stuff done around the house, I will do some more work on the yard tracks.

  Prayers to all in need,

  Paul

Went down and mowed my parents yard while it was still cool. At least I got that much done today. Now I'm looking at the layout. It has a bunch of stuff on it that got relocated in the kitchen tear down. My mind is screaming 'Clean it!' and my body is screaming 'OH NO YOU DON'T!'. I didn't get much sleep last night. So far the body is winning. I just want to pass out for two or three hours.

Afternoon guys

Been pretty busy the last few days, but I managed to get in a bunch of work on my train projects.

I managed to fit the P2K SD7/9 sideframes to my Kato SD40, then fit BLI SD7/9 sideframes to my P2K SD7. The P2k sideframes to the kato was relatively easy, just time consuming. Fitting the BLI sideframes to the P2K was kinda tricky. I did this by drilling and tapping holes for screws into the mounts. I also found a way to quickly build those stewart F-unit fuel tanks. Unfortunately, I have to get rid of the taper on the chassis where the fuel tank goes. And I have to do that for the 11 units I have...

Maybe today I will wire up and put decoders in the P2K SD7 and Kato SD40. I'm kinda tired though, and I would wanna get some different resistors for putting beacons in some of my other units.

Ken, If you're still having issuses with the P1K F3, I still have the 2 chassis I got from you. If you wanna trade some freight cars for them I'd take them.

I'll try to catch up here.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Welcome aboard, please watch your step and hold on please, welcome aboard, watch your step and hold on please, welcome aboard.........

Oh!  I'm home...  Finally can sit down...  Didn't think I was going to be able to walk from the car to the house.  Man!  Am I tired!  Chloe, I need a cup of hot decaf to start with and I'll decide on dinner in a bit.  Thank you Ma'am.

What a day out at the museum, got there and found out I was doing train crew for the day.  Had a huge crowd.  Well over 500 people rode today as the total car count was over 1000.  50 or more people on every trip.  Had 3 people almost fall getting off my caboose as obviously when I ask them to come down the ladder (steps) backward I must not know what I am talking about...  Until they fall then it is somehow my fault.  There were two of us working each caboose today and both of us on the Erie were starting to get a bit short om temper with people ignoring the safety rules.  Lots and lots of little kids...  There was a birthday party at the New York Museum of Transportation (our sister museum).  No one got hurt so it was a good day all around.

Paul, keeping both your wife and you in my prayers during this time.  I know all too well the ups and downs of cancer treatments!  Each crisis is a new heart wrenching, gut grabbing pain for all those around the one with the disease.  May the outcome be a good one for her (and you)!

Jim, yes the rocks are that color.  The "real" ones are form a local quarry where you can get all you can carry for free if you laive in the area, and only use a shovel to take it.  The rock is a form of limestone found in the Onondaga Limestone Deposits.  It can (depending on organic content) go from a very light gray to almost black as seen here: http://www.geo.cornell.edu/geology/classes/RWA/EAS_210_new/photos/finger_lakes_area/seneca_stone_quarry/dscf0878.html  One layer can be almost black and right above or below is a couple feet of light gray limestone...  There are name for each layer.  The pail I got from the quarry was mostly very dark and I decided to match it for the formation as I want to use some of the small stone pieces and talus around the rock faces.  I think it will work well where I want to use it.

Going to go veg out for a while and... Chloe, I'll have a bowl of the home made Chicken soup please...

Later!

I feel your pain bud. I mowed my parents yard this morning. Bunch of pine trees. At least ten in the front yard, even more in the back yard. Pine needles all over! I wind rowed the pine needle into rows that could be picked up later. Wind came up. Wind rows are still there but now there's a new layer of pine needles all over the yard. Guess what! It's not my job to clean them up.

I'm baaaaaaack!! Laugh

The body shell is about 90% stripped,,,,I'll let it soak about another hour then I'll pull it out,,wash it with soapy water and set it up to paint tomorrow. I've been procrastinating on the project for a while, its about time I get it in gear. A friend asked my to put sound in his 2 Proto BL2's. They are the same road name, but from 2 different production runs, and while 1 has yellow lettering, the other almost looked orange next to it. So 1 shell is getting stripped and decaled to match the other, plus they are both getting renumbered to match his modeling era. But Shhhhh!Whisper He doesn't know this!lBig Smile He just thinks I'm backlogged!! He was even here the other night dropping off another engine for repowering and DCC sound. Surprise

Yeah,,,gotta get my butt in gear!!

Meanwhile, Chloe my dear, can I have some of the New York Cheesecake with blueberry preserves drizzled on top, and a cup of coffee, black, sugar only? I'll take it over to the corner booth and relax a bit!

Karl

NCE über alles! Thumbs Up

Had fish for supper. Flo could I have a cup of Decaf please?

Put the couplers on the loco's but no luck with getting JMRI to work on my computer so I still have to use MOH's.

Paul- I am still saying prayers for your wife.

Ray- I hear that a lot. I tripped over a curb or whatever and hurt my whatever and it is the theme park fault, etc., etc., etc. I feel like saying I guess where you come from there are no curbsDunce

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Wind is picking up and the temp is dropping, Fall is here in Western Nevada .

Thanks for all the prayers for my wife and I. She did not feel like visitors today, so I got some things done around the house, Got the sprinklers turned off, the dead batteries charged, the truck over to my auto mechanics so he can fix the brakes. And I even got some modeling in. Hope to get back to do some more after dinner. I made a meatloaf and french fries. I also have some venison in the crock pot for a nice stew tomorrow.

I will be getting to bed early so I can be at the hospital early to catch the doc's and ask questions. These guys get there at the crack of dawn.

   Prayers to all in need.

Good Evening All

Busy day today. Got my chores done early. Installed a second back deck light for the CFO and fixed the drywall on the back wall where I had to cut it to route the wires. At some point I need to repaint a bunch including hall and stairwells but not today. Watched the Giants game, DC has a real find in RGIII but the Giants won through in the end. In between and for a fair time in the afternoon I got some layout time in. Still doing the drops and buss for the DCC power districts. Cut wire, strip end and tin, solder to rail joiner, drill hole through layout, insert tube, feed wire through tube, remove tube from underneath, attach wire to buss, repeat.

Brave man repainting locos, Karl      . I can never manage a good job on all the details and masking for the paint. Love to see a pic when you're done.

Sorry to hear so many still having health issues. I see the kidney doc Tues for my semi annual check over so wish me luck,     CUL, J.R.

 Evening Dinners!

Thank You Flo, want to guess what she handed me? Whistling

Work Front While nothing special happened today, it was pretty good day for me commission wise. Made a extra $54.00.Last week turned out better than I hoped. Had some reservations come in and they where not stolen from me. (Boy I glad Larry the crock is gone) So if I am payed my training time I made $640.00 last week.

Curt, I am sure I could brow a power supply, but it really won't tell me anything at this point. DCC system is working fine again? Whistling That is why I wish it would just plan break and stay broken! Bang Head

Paul Like the rest of us here I am sorry to hear your wife is fighting an infection. By the way, what is your wife name? Angel

Vince Thank you for the offer and I just might take you up on it. What kind of rolling stock would you be looking for anyway? Now if you where by chances willing to let go of that PK 2 SD-7 that could get you a lot of stuff from me! I bet I spent well over 20 hours trying to get my Rio Grand SD 7 back on the rails! Bang Head

Does any one know where I can buy cheap Violins? Yes Ray, it is close to Violin chucking time! But keep them coming if you have any left. I just found a web site that sells used Violins cheap! Whistling

See you all after work Monday!

Time for me to call it a night. Got about an hour nap time earlier but still felt worn out. No layout work today. Maybe I'll get some good sleep tonight. See y'all tomorrow.
