I've been inside all day today. Woke up this morning with bad pain in my ankle. As much as I was on my feet yesterday I wasn't surprised. It only got worse as the morning went on so it was imperative I stay off my feet as much as possible. Well my father calls a little before noon to tell me he's leaving for work soon and will I come down to keep an eye on my mother. I told him no and why. He says all I have to do is sit with her. Well it's not that simple. It's constantly get up and get this, do that or go here or there. So no, I didn't go down there. Good thing too. By 1pm I was having a hard time getting from my bedroom to my kitchen, a distance of about ten feet. Add four feet to get to the computer chair. This is bone pain that I'm feeling and it is intense. I seriously doubt I could have stepped down the front steps. I'm not quite as sore now. Will I be able to get out tomorrow? That's a good question. Even if I can I probably won't. This needs some time heal. If he doesn't like that it's just too bad. My health is more important to me. I don't need another bout with osteomyelitis.

Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Well I got the 2 SD45 beacons wired in an working. I forgot the DH165l0s in them won't light up those bulbs with resistors as they are "smart" and won't blow LEDs or 1.5v bulbs.... So I had to wire them somewhere else. Then one of the SD45s didn't want to go back together (it's a tight fit with the new wiring). But they are all in one piece and just need to be programmed. The GP30 will wait till tomorrow morning.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Well even though it was very painful I had to get out to take care of a dangerous situation. A tree came down on my power and cable lines and snapped the service pole off at the ground. So now the lines are down but I still have power and cable. However the lines are hanging low over the road. I tied a couple of white T shirts and a couple of those snap-lite green safety lights (those break and shake things) on the lowest line so they can at least be seen. The power company has been called (niece called) but they probably won't be here until morning. Seems if it's not one thing it's another. Old Murphy definitely seems to be getting his jollies!

Hey guys!

Please don't blame us Canadians for the cold weather! We don't like it much either!! How anyone can live in Winnipeg or Inuvik makes no sense to me!Smile, Wink & GrinLaughDevilWhistling

And, just in case you think it only goes one way, I was just a kid when you guys gave us Hurricane Hazel in 1954 and I DO REMEMBER the flooding and downed trees. I remember driving through the Holland Marsh that night with water up to the tops of the bumpers, and I remember my dad emptying the water out of the spare tire well the next morning. I think the reason that all of this stuff stuck in my mind is because all of the adults were worried (meaning scared sh.tless!) We had a farm house with a row of huge pine trees down the side of the front lawn. Several of them came down that night. That was scary.

Anyhow, seriously - good luck to those of you who are in the path of the storm. We will complain about a few days of rain and wind but we really should not complain given what some of you will have to go through in the next few days.

 Our thoughts are with you.

Toto, We will be leaving Kansas soon, but you can still follow the Yellow Brick Road to...Morning coffee in the Diner.

GOOD MORNING!!!

A friend in need, is  afriend indeed, SO:

Meaning:

Almost always it is the origin of a phrase or saying that requires the most research; the meaning being well understood. This  phrase  is interesting because there are various interpretations of its meaning.

Firstly, is it 'a friend in need is a friend indeed' or 'a friend in need is a friend in deed'? Secondly,  is it 'a friend (when you are) in need' or 'a friend (who is) in need'? If the former, then the phrase means: 'someone who helps you when you are in need is a true friend'. If the latter, it is 'someone who needs your help becomes especially friendly in order to obtain it'.

So, that gives us four options:

1. A friend, (when you are) in need, is indeed a true friend. ('indeed') 2. A friend, (when you are) in need, is someone who is prepared to act to show it ('in deed') 3. A friend, (who is) in need, is indeed a true friend. ('indeed') 4. A friend, (who is) in need, is someone who is prepared to act to show it ('in deed')

The original meaning can be resolved to some degree by the documentary evidence - see below. Nevertheless, there is no unambiguous right or wrong here and this is a phrase that we probably infer the meaning of from context when we first hear it. Whichever of the above options we initially opt for will cement our understanding of the phrase; probably forever, if the vehemence of the mutually contradictory mails I get on this subject are anything to go by.

ORIGIN:

A version of this proverb was known by the 3rd century BC. Quintus Ennius wrote: 'Amicu certus in re incerta cernitur'. This translates from the Latin as 'a sure friend is known when in difficulty'.

The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations lists it as existing in English from the 11th century. The earliest version I can find is from Caxton's Sonnes of Aymon, 1489:

"It is sayd, that at the nede the frende is knowen."

The morality play Everyman also contains similar lines. The play's date is uncertain and scholars place it as 'late 15th century', which could be before Caxton's work:

Fellowship: Sir, I say as I will do in deed. Everyman: Then be you a good friend at need;

By the 16th century, when the proverb was recorded in John Heywood's A Dialogue Conteynyng Prouerbes and Epigrammes, 1562:

Prove [i.e. test] thy friend ere [before] thou have need; but, in-deed A friend is never known till a man have need. Before I had need, my most present foes Seemed my most friends; but thus the world goes

So, what does that evidence indicate in terms of original meaning? Ennius' text is ambiguous and, being a later translation, can't be considered the original source of the phrase in English. Caxton's version is also unhelpful. The Everyman play is clearer in its intent and supports interpretation 2. Heywood's verse can't be considered the original meaning as the other citations predate it. It is worth considering though as Heywood was an indefatigable recorder of proverbs as understood in England in the 16th century. It is safe to say that, whatever view we have now, in 1562 either 1 or 2 was the accepted meaning.

Neither 3 nor 4 appears to be supported by early texts and, as they aren't widely held today either, it seems safe to discount them. On the balance of evidence, interpretation 2 has the best claim to be the original meaning of the phrase, i.e. 'a friend, when you are in need, is someone who is prepared to prove their friendship by their deeds' .

A search of web-based material shows that 'a friend in need is a friend indeed' has about twice the public currency as 'a friend in need is a friend in deed'. Those who stand up for the latter are probably correct, but they will have a hard time changing the mind of the 'indeed' contingent.

MEANWHILE Back at the ranch: WE are preparing for the nasty storm Sandy heading our way, though it's path remains somewhat sketchy. After a double whammy of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee left this area devestated by flooding last year, people are taking it seriously. {one town had 1,300 of 1,600 homes flooded}.

WE {MOH and I} wish EVERYONE who is in the path {s?} of Sandy the best of survival. We ourselves will be high and dry, but expect to loose power for up to 5 days, as the substation will likely flood again. Although we have a generator, it is proving a moot point if it is raining as we have no place but out in the open to run it and if it is stormy and rainy {or snowy} we can't run it. Without power I will not be online.

During the time of the storm, we WILL have a Prayer candle lit.

Have a good day!  Geeked

Good Morning....

I'm up and getting a few things cleaned up in here...all kinds of rain has been falling on our'n heads here and, of course, with Sandy getting ready to to do her thing I'll be watching my inland lake/ocean thing here...in fact, our neighbour to the other side of the crescent has already been seen creating a canal so the water can have somewhere else to go other than straight through my front yard...Laugh

Our forecast has us getting at least one more day of good ol' fashioned downpour city...a small sunny break or two on Sunday..then, right back to the swing of things with a few inches of rain...oh...and wind....Sigh

Well, with the generator here all prepped and at the ready...we'll see what happens around here...everyone be careful!!!

Good morning. It's 44° with 100% humidity. It'll be mostly sunny with a high of 62°.

I didn't get much sleep last night, a couple of hours at best. Around 10:45-11:15 last night a tree fell in my yard and pulled down the power line and TV cable. It also snapped my service pole off at the ground. The power and cable however are still on and functional at this time. The power company was called last night. I expect them to show up sometime today to cut the power. The question now is where am I going to get a new service pole? Later this morning I'll move the sparse contents of my fridge down to my parents place. I also have medication that must be kept refrigerated. Other than that there's not much that needs to be done. I'll still be able to access the forum from my parents place. I have an old computer set up there.

Good Morning All:

Last night Katje found the puppy in the mirror, which was more entertaining that a barrel of monkeys…

Jeff, I take it the service pole is not the power companies pole?

Packer & Burlington Northern, you BN guys ever follow the MR layout popular in the 1990’s of an N-scale BN layout.  I’ve never been a big fan of BN but the layout was pretty cool.

Ray, the latest projection shows Sandy to drive up to the middle of Lake Ontario and stall out.

Ken, 99.9% of the time if they enter the military as a jerk they will leave the military as a jerk.

My yard is like a wet sponge and we have 7 more days of rain coming with the next 4 days to be washouts. I’m fully expecting the roads around Detroit to be flooded so I put the winter weights in the back of the truck last night to keep me from spinning tires on the trip.  I took Monday off so maybe I can get some MRR stuff done J

Jeffrey,  I like your lighting on this shot.  Your depth of field turned out well, too.  On your post number, do you think that they start over at 20,000?  I remember when I would almost make a milestone.  Now since it falls back, I haven't paid much attention to it.

Safety to those of you ducking for cover from Sandy.

Good morning, all,

35 degrees and sunny this morning.  I'm glad we brought some plants in last night!  At least the sunny weather will heat the house up so I can avoid turning on the furnace and inflating my gas bill for a few more days.

Off to worship band rehearsal in an hour.  We're meeting at the drummer's house instead of the church office and were told to keep things as "acoustic" as possible.  This means no PA system for the singers and acoustic guitarist.  Should be interesting as my synthesizers are the antithesis of "acoustic".....

Excellent photo, Jeffrey.

Later, folks...

Mornin'!

Zoe, just a dark roast coffee to go...  Thank you very much, Ma'am!

Just about out the door for a day of railfan trip.  The LA&L will be hosting the trip in conjunction with the R&GV RR Museum.  All proceeds to benefit the museum.  The trip is sold out at $99 a seat.  I have a feeling we won't be doing all the planed photo shoots with the drenching drizzle predicted for this afternoon.

Hope to have photos to share tonight.

Lee, just what we need ... A stalled tropical storm sitting in central NY! Grumpy  My son has Tuesday off from work, so he will ba able to keep an eye on the storm at his house.  They are a bit worried about some of the nieghbors tress which could pose a danger to his house.

Later!

Morning All,

Flo could I have a second cup of coffee please.

I think I am going to skip the train club today and install the 7 lights in the engine servicing area. All the prep work is done so it should not take forever to do. Famous last words. I told MOH if she wanted we could do something tomorrow and she immediately said I  want to go to Magic Kingdom (Disney)Bang Head. Oh well fair is fair I guess. We are doing a train vacation in May and I know she is thrilled about thatWhistling

Those of us in FL lucked out with Sandy but I am saying prayers for those that will be effected.

Next week we get our first taste of cold  weather. There will be a day with the high of  68 and several with lows in the 50's. That is pretty chilly for here.

Hope everyone has a great day and prayers for those in need.

Good Afternoon!

I am home for the weekend, but have to report back to the hospital on Monday. Unfortunately, my health issues are by far more serious than I like them to be. I will need all my strength and faith to battle them.

Dana and Steven will see an email from me on Monday, asking them to relieve me from my duties as a moderator, as I won´t have the time to perform them.

I hope to be able to come here for an occasional chat. I´d like to say a big thank you for all the friendship I have received here. A special prayer goes out to Barry for his fight.

Hope to see you soon again!

Jeffrey- That item we discussed {at least one of them} is in my possession. I WILL have to wait till another day to get the other {I think you will need two anyway..they are smaller than I thought} as the coupon clearly states {and they caught me on it} that "one coupon per item per customer PER DAY". I HOPE to get it on MOnday before the storm hitss and will ship ojut whatever I got AFTER the storm!!! The coupons expire the 31st and then they are double the price without coupon. I hope they work for you even if you hard wire them in. They havebracket and  sticky so you can mount anywhere.

ULRICh- You WILL certainly be missed! {I actually thought you already stepped down as moderator} I will have an extra prayer candle lit JUST FOR FORUM members!

The STORM- To those {who like us} will be in harm's way. I wish you all the best of luck! May we recieve the least amount of damage, and recover quickly from it!

TOOTH- still bothering me, but with the good drugs is manageable- until I go to eat somehting!

Well, I'd best get on with my daily dishes, laundry and hte kitchen pantry organizing!

Have a great day!

CDN Dennis- Both are Walthers. The TT is the DCC 130' newest version. I have had it about 9 months I think. The RH is the base kit plus 3 add on stalls. I built the RH months before I was shipped the TT and if I had to do it again I would install the TT then build the RH after the track was alinged with the TT. I think it would be easier for alignment. Make sure you keep drinking plenty of fluids and hope you feel better real soon.

Thanks for the info Curt, you told me what I need to know. I too have a Walthers Roundhouse still to be assembled and a Walthers TT, which is the older 90 foot one that from what I read is less than kind of a problem and a maintenance headache. I'm thin thniking of selling it on EBay and getting the new one instead since I've finally decided to go DCC. Your thoughts Curt?

Electric company has been a no show thus far. My sister had called them last night to have a crew sent to disconnect the line. Nobody ever showed. I called them an hour ago and told them about the report made last night and that nobody showed. I told the I need the line disconnected before I can even think about touching the service pole. Here the customer is responsible for the service pole and boxes.

Got home from work today, was met at the exit to our development by my firewood guy. yes, there was another cord dumped in the back yard! So I stacked wood til dark, finishing up by the light of the floodlight on the back of the house. Yeah, all I got to say is "oh my achin back!" Sigh That makes 2 full cords in the yard, and a quarter cord in the rack in the basement! That should hold us for awhile!Big Smile

See, that''s the beauty of burning wood!!!!! You get to generate heat stacking it, moving it into the house, burning it, and packing ot the ashes. Which is why I now have a natural gas fire place Smile Been there, done that on two previous houses.  Enough already.

Besides, this is Alberta, we've got Natural Gas out the Ying Yang!!!!

Afternoon All,

I have the lights mounted and I am waiting for the clear caulk to dry on the bases before electrical hookup.

CDN Dennis- I don't have any experience with the older TT's but I have heard a lot of negatives about them. Although the TT I use is DCC programmable I control it by analog. I was afraid I would quickly become overloaded trying to control it on a throttle as I am pretty much a analog kind of guy. You may have problems finding a new TT, I believe they did not make enough to keep up with demand. If you are mechanically inclined Custom Model Railroads has build it yourself kits in a good variety of sizes. Lee built one and is happy with it. I am not sure the track degree spread is the same but they have RH kits also.

Ulrich- I am very sorry to hear of your continued health issues and I will say prayers for you. Please let us know how you are doing because we all care about you.

Garry- It is a Atlas RS-1 that has a QSI Titan sound and control system. it. It has a train phone with a junction box and receiver on the short roof and large number boards on the front of the long roof. Weathering is with AIM weathering powders, primarily medium dirt and light rust. I have used grimy black on the top.

Everyone take care.

Afternoon guys

Well I got the 2 SD45s to play nice with the F45s. But the beacon in one of them is way too dim. I'm thinking of going back to the 820 resistor on these ones as I used 1k, but it seems too dim for some of them. I wasn't able to get the GP30's to work because the solder pads for functions on the decoders came off. My U28B has the right decoder, but is programmed for the rear light to be a mars in foward (it's an ex-Q U28B) so I saved the file to the MR club's decoder pro and will swap the decoders later.

Lee, Never heard of that issue; but it might be worth a look at. I did find this BN layout on youtube:

Curt, the RS1 looks great, nice job!

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

that guy has a great BN layout. I don't know how many times I've watched that video but it's great.  as for that BN issue it's "building the burlington northern in N scale" unfortunately some people are selling it for $100+. I wonder who in the right mind thinks someone would buy this book for that much when they could get a new loco(s), kit, rolling stock, etc...

Were baaaaack!

Train show was ok, just alot of stuff I could use, but didn't need. However, I did squeak the hinges on the old wallet a few times.

An Athearn super power BB F7 for 20 bucks, decorated for the Western Maryland, not for me exactly, but for my 2 oldest Grandsons, ages 4&6. It seams Poppop got snookered into building the a small layout (4x6) for Christmas, and we need another loco. Problem is, it runs so smooth and looks so nice I may pick up another somewhere and keep this one for myself!!Big Smile

A Walthers undec, unbuilt bay window caboose kit for 10 dollars and a Bachmann Sears house, for 8 dollars. The Mrs saw that kit 1st , picked it up and informed me that I was buying the kit...Smart girl eh?Wink

Gonna go now and batten down the last few hatches,,,,,its getting ugly loookin outside!Sigh

Cya'all later!

Karl

NCE über alles! Thumbs Up

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Pleases

Ulrich my friend I don't know what to say but God Speed. I know you know how much you mean to me! We will meet someday, lets just not make it in the Big Roundhouse in the sky! Pleases find someway to let us know what is going on! If Petra needs help, have her contact me and I will see what the Mailbox Buddies maybe able to do.

So far today, things have not gone as planed! Bang Head Went to my payday card per phone to with draw some funds and see what my check was for. Hum, while I still had some money left, no paycheck was deposited? My first thoughts where someone hacked the account and stole my paycheck! But wait, there was still money in the account? Called the area supervisor Dave and yet to hear back from him, go figure! Whistling

Hum, I just hit my 1 year mark, I wonder if the company did anything odd? They did, I called my shop and there was a new payday card there! To bad I did not know that, but I was in St Charles when it came in!

 See you all later!
