Good Afternoon everyone!

I'm getting ready to go out and prep the yard for Sandy's visit. They're calling for 40 mph sustained winds with 65 mph gusts here in WNY. It won't take me long, and I can get the kids to help once they're off the bus.

We had another great weekend at the museum with some good news. Some friends of mine stopped by after they ran a special excursion on the WNY&P RR in Jamestown NY for the dedication of the renovated station there. We talked in great length about the possibility of excursions from the museum It's been over 20 years since we were able to do that.

A young lady stopped by the museum Saturday with a set of B&O caboose lamps that her Grandfather got from the East Salamanca yard. She heard that I collect these things, and would I be interested in them. Well, I'm $250.00 lighter today, but that's ok when you see what a pair of these fetches on Ebay!  Here they are cleaned up, lit, and hanging on our P&WV RR caboose:

These were made by Handlan in St Louis probably in the 1940's and they're a little different from my set of Dressel caboose lamps of the same era:

These guys have seen some ard time out in the elements when I'm at the museum, so now I can set them aside for some tlc and repainting. The B&O painted them both black and yellow, and I've seen both versions on freight and passenger trains. When I put a set of markers on my HO cabooses, it's usually the yellow ones on my B&O and Pennsy cabooses. and black on everything else.

Ok, it's time to get to work. Everyone have a good day, and my prayers go out to all of you east of me who may be a little closer to Sandy than we will be.

-Stan

Well Im about to head out to work soon.

I can imagine when I'm done at 11pm that the winds are going to be whipping around pretty good. I think there calling for 50mm of rain and 70Km winds around that time.

Might try to check in later tonight. Stay safe guys. especially the ones in the real dangerous areas.

Jeremy, best of luck to you and your coworkers, I think we all need to keep in our thoughts those that have to work tonight.

They issued a flood warning for the Conestoga River and though I'll be not to close to it, many people do live by it and I hope the waters will keep from getting to high.

I'm working tonight, have an overnight bag with some food packed. While I get overtime for staying longer I'd much, much prefer not too.

First time at the dinner.....

Jeffrey, I have an old injury from Vietnam also of the ankle.  I jumped off an M-60 tank, my foot went ankle deep in thick mud and my body spun around but my ankle didn't.  Painful dislocation that wasn't treated for a few hours!  (Never a good thing on a dislocation.)

The doc who finally got to me told me I would have a barometer for a right ankle for the rest of my life.  He was right!  Sandy is hitting right now and all day, my ankle has hurt when I get up and walk due to the changing weather.

Think I'll just sit back, sip a brew and read some of the back issues of Narrow Gauge Gazette that I bought at the Timonium, MD show this past Saturday.

At least you still have an ankle. On mine the joint is gone. The foot is folded to the inside so the bottom of it faces the other foot. When I stand I'm standing on the end of the shin bone and I can feel the pressure through the length of the bone. Mine too acts as a barometer. When there's nasty weather coming through the toes ache. I have to wear a modified orthopedic boot in order to walk (if you can call it walking). The fastest I can move is perhaps two mph. It's slow going and I can only manage two hundred feet at the very most.

I`m thinking of grabbing a sheet of plywood and going outside to see if I can fly myself like a kite..........Really?     no not really.

Reality......I just go back down in the basement (cave #2) and do some more work on the layout.

Evenin' folks!

Janie just a decaf...

Hang on!  Here she come!!!

Steady wind here in the Finger Lakes is about 26 mph with gusts into the mid 40s at the moment.  Two hours from now they are saying steady wind of 45mph with gusts to the mid 50s....  Hope everything around here holds together...  We have already had several flickers in the electric.  I shut down for a couple hours and just had to find a telephone # to call someone about a cancelled meeting tomorrow.  Only place I have her number is on the puter of course.  I'll be shutting down ASAP.

Stay safe and have fun!

Evening All,

Made spaghetti for supper. It has been chilly here all day. My son and I stood in line for 2 hours and voted early today. We got home and cleaned house. I go back to w**k tomorrow.

My daughter got some fantastic news today. She has been trying to adopt for several years and she got notified that she has been approved to adapt 2 brothers, 1 in second grade and 1 in Pre-K. She knows what she is getting into as she is a Elementary school teacher. Also all previous family rights have been terminated by the state. I am so happy for her.

I muted the lower weathering job on the RS-1. The more I looked at it the more I did not like my job on the trucks. The weathering was much heavier than the picture implied.

Stan- What a great buy.

Richard- Welcome to the diner.

Prayers for all of you in Sandy's pathAngel.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Hi Gang,

Here sits the western Canadian Canuck in Springfield,  Missouri, and he is concerned for all those in the North Eastern USA and our Eastern Canadian Buddies.  Our Best Wishes and Prayers are with all of you who find yourselves ducking for cover over the next few days.

like RAY, we are still "here" the wind is picking up. May not be as bad as they thought here. Certainly not as bad as the coastal areas and inland lower lying areas.

The worst is that the winds come from the east and our trees are used to winds from the west so stable for that onslaught, but not from the east. THere are trees behind the trailer I am concerned about. I told MOH we should sleep in the LR, but MOH says flat out "no", I will sleep in my bed". I Certainly hope nothing happens but if it does...can you feel a great BIG "I TOLD YOU SO" coming on????

WOn't stay long as like RAY, I don;t trust the power  now...

GOt two reverse 911 calls alerting to the fact of states of emergency iin our county and towns... and in the next county.

MOH has tomorrow off work adn I am glad...at least we can suffer in darkness together...Whistling

No early morning, but we will probably be up anyway...routine habbit.

PRAYERS FOR THOSE IN THE STORM...and for others who need them!!!

Evening..

Been raining and getting windier as I type...winds trending north to northeasterly at 40 mph gusts up to 55 mph right now..supposedly getting higher later on.

So far power is still on although I did notice that down the road a ways no lights on....trees looking pretty bare of leaves right now.

Better be getting off the 'puter here...try to have a safe evening here....

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, beer pleases.

Well today has been a pain in the caboose so far!

Work Front Just plain boring! In 8 hours I only had 2 customers? Only thing that helped was being back in my shop and visiting with the guys!

Paycheck, got that fixed and I now have some money, well till I pay the bills? Whistling

Health Wise Felt light headed most of the day. I have been fighting a sines infection so was it that or my blood sugar was to high? Felt like my sugar was around 160 level. Tested my blood when I got home and it was only 91 so it must be the sines infection. Right toe is all so hurting a little, guess I will take a peak, but all most afraid to. Whistling It looked fine this morning (well as good as I can hope for right now) when I repacked the wound and applied the dressing.

Train Front Seems the trains have lost there Mo Jo tonight.Bang Head I have had 2 major derailments tonight, normal bad luck is 1 in 30 days if that!

Jeffery One my current engine problems is BB F7A and B unit. When I was cleaning the wheels of the B unit I lost power when I ran it's front trucks a cross the towel paper. So I will I clean the side frames and make sure of the power leads have not failed. Now the A unit has me some what confused. Run the front trucks a cross the paper towel and all is fine. Hit the rear trucks, engine stops, but the LED headlight stays on? Just seems a little odd that the LED stays lite and motor stops, don't you think?

Richard Welcome to the dinner! Welcome M-60 Battle Tank, that is something I have not thought about for years! It was state of the art when I was in the services! Guessing you where Army as well, but I am pretty sure the Jar Heads had some as well.

I was in the XVIII Air Born Corp, 108th MP unit at Ft Bragg NC, and your self?

 See you all Tuesday.

Hiya gang!Cowboy

Big Storm out there. Our shop was one of the few open today, and despite out best efforts to get out of there today, I didn't leave until 6:15 tonight!Angry Not because of the work,,the customers,, or the techs. Upper management felt the storm had been blown way out of proportion. Um,, when the states Governor tells everyone to stay home, it means nothing??Confused

Actually, the ride home wasn't too bad, the was no traffic. But back streets were slick because of wet leaves.  Also SWMBO was PO'ed that I had to stay all day, her office closed at 11 this morning.

Oh well, the power in on (knock on wood) , the house is warm, life is good again! Big Smile

Prayers for the ill among us, and for the safety of all in the path of the monster!

Karl

That does seem a little strange. Remember that the LED pulls much less power than the motor. I take it these are Athearn units? If that's the case the pickups are much more robust than others I've worked with. As you undoubtedly know power is picked up by the wheels and passed through the half shafts to the bronze bearings and from there to the truck frame halves. If the trucks are unmodified one half is connected to the 'L' shaped contact arm and the other half to the frame. It's been my experience that if oil (in most cases non-conductive) gets into the bearings and/or between the bearings and truck halves it will interfere with the power pickup, in some cases it can insulate the truck resulting in no power pickup. Could this be your problem?

Yes it could be, I have not looked yet. So rip the truck apart and give a good cleaning? If so what should I look at the most?

Well I have left over Pizza and fried chicken witting  for me! Dinner Yum! Big Smile

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a Santa Fe mug of hot chocolate please. Thank you.You said that Janie & Flo are gone helping out on the East Coast? Wow Hope they are some place out of the weather tonight!

NGNuclear (Richard) - Welcome to the Diner, and have a beverage on me. And thank you for your service. Thumbs Up

Jeff, this is one of those rare times when you won't be in the path of a storm.

The next few days - especially for those in the Eastern/Northeastern US & neighbours NOTB - may be very suitable for reading favorite model railroading magazines. So long as one has a lamp/flashlight, anyway. Stay safe, people.

Dennis, so long as your place (including basement) is on high ground - and well-built), the basement sounds good, also.

Ray - I'm guessing that THAT phone number you were looking for wasn't on a laptop, right? Good argument for having a laptop for backup (even an older one, that has your address book & other important info, anyway).

Rob, it's good to see you in the Diner again. How've things on your place been? Hope you don't get too much from the fringes of Sally. Angel

Curt, GREAT news for your daughter on the adoption! I'm sure she is tickled pink. Big Smile Sounds like she will be a great Mom, too.

Karl, good that you got home, as you said. Though your management there maybe needs to talk with your governor...

Galaxy, keep yourself & YOH safe (or safe as you can) from the trees. As Ray said earlier, those winds are not what your trees' roots are expecting.

And Barry, you watch out there - sounds like those winds have a far reach. Surprise

Prayers for those in need of comfort, healing and a good night's rest, and especially for those in the path of the hurricane (tonight and over the next few days) and those who will be helping with the cleanup afterward.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.

Evening guys

Dropped off my new Scat crank at a not-so-local machine shop (the local ones kinda suck) to get it balanced with my new SRP pistons, rods, and flywheel. I realized I'm only about $450 in the rotating assembly on this new motor, another $150 for the heads, and about $75 for the intake. So roughly about $675 for most of my new motor. That doesn't include the custom Ed Curtis cam I bought, as I'm trading that to my father for something that'll be cheaper to use and better suited to my engine. Everything else I traded stuff to get or they were "obsolete" for my fathers useage. Just some new bearings, machine work (smoothing out oil and water galleys, porting the heads, and a few other things), a valve job, and assembly and it'll be finished. I expect to get about 350-400 horses out of this, and come in under 1K. Not too shabby IMO.

On the way back I saw what was probably the 2nd or 3rd train I've seen all year (not counting the yard in pensacola). 5 UP SD something ot others (some looked like SD90MACs) and about 15-20 cars. A bit overpowered IMO.

I saw a Tenshodo GN S1 northern on that evil auction site what was in my budget. Does anyone here know if they are any good?

Ken, On some of my locos the LED stays on for a few seconds after power is cut off. Maybe your's is doing the same?

Richard and Ken, I have a roco M60 for a flat car load. I bought it for like 2 bucks with a messed up turret, and a turret to make it an M60A3 for another dollar. Do either of you know when the M60A3 came online?

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

The M60A3 was introduced in 1978 and was in service in US forces until 1997. It's still a front line main battle tank for a number of countries.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could sure use a decaf right now...

Nothing too terrible seems to be happening here at least at the moment.  After the flickering this afternoon, the power has been steady all evening, no big trees down around the neighborhood that i can see.  Only little problem is that I seem to have a small puddle of water down in the basement right where the electric equipment is on the wall...  I traced the dripping to it coming out of the conduit coming in the house from the panels.  It is dripping from one of the joiners near a junction box.  Shouldn't be any immediate problem as the water is coming in and running right back out of the conduit, but I will be sending an email first thing tomorrow to the installer.  Must be a box not tightened down all the way up on the roof, and with the high winds and rain, a bit of water must be entering the conduit.

Jim, my little old laptop only has 160 Gigs of memory and since the iMac has 5 terabytes in it and attached to it, there is no way all my files could be stored in the laptop...  LOL  Of course the file I need was on the iMac....  I was not worried as I have enough battery backup to run it for at least 45 minutes from that. Laugh

Looks like the entire universe around here will be closed tomorrow.  In the area 54 schools have reported they are closed tomorrow on the local TWC channel already.  Geneva, however has a 2 hour delay....  Since the high wind warning is in effect until 11 am tomorrow I wouldn't want any child of mine walking to school or even to the bus in it.  There have already been a couple of deaths reported in the area from tree limbs falling on cars.

Time for me to call it a night I think.  Stay safe and out of harms way!  Prayers for all in need.

Got back home safely from the office about an hour ago, thankful I didn't have to spend the night in the office. No serious flooding my way as of this writing. Our basement has some water on the floor but nothing to worry about, a sump pump will help if it gets worse. We took the precaution of putting the washer/dryer combo on pallets just in case.

We have much water, gallons of it, and a good bit of non-perishable food.

Houston? HOUSTON? WE ARE STILL HERE!!!

GOOD MORNING!!!

Yes, Like RAY said, it seemed to die out. WE stayed up late {for us} to 10:30 and the storm had been down graded to "tropical {something or other} Cyclone". We had a candle lit and all. waiting for the power to go out, which never came. We had no strong winds or anything.

Apparently PA got a good dose of it, but the storm basically collapsed once it hit shore.

Some 2 million people +  without power. The coastal areas of the east coast hard hit, though.

We sitll have thoughts and prayers for all those affected!! We will learn more about damage {to other areas} as time moves on.

Still pleased MOH has the day off. No worries there.

Well, towns. counties and states roads are all closed. Only essential personelle should be on roads.

SO, HAve a great day for those unaffected, adn SAFETY FIRST TO THOSE AFFECTED!

The paryer candle will be lit!

Good Morning All:

I hope everyone is ok.

The power line to the neighbor’s house and one of the top wires from the pole behind me broke off last night setting the neighbor’s yard and garage on fire.  I could hear the thumping of a grounded electrical line and thought it was in my house then I could see the flashes of light through my window blinds.  I called 911 when I saw flames and smoke; really do the 911 operators have to be a total jerk when you’re the second or third person to call about the same fire?  It took firefighters less than 5 minutes to get to the house and start throwing water on the garage fire but it took the power company 3 hours to secure the power line.  I can’t get into work; all roads from here to anywhere are closed due to high water or debris.

It sounded like several pounds of debris bounced off the north side of the house last night but power remained on.  It looks like we are ok but it’s still dark out, I’ll check things out at first light.

Tell that to the victims of the storm and their families.

Here is the latest update from CNN news.

Superstorm Sandy smashed ashore last night, triggering floods, fires and devastation. Fifteen people are known to have died in the U.S. and one in Canada, adding to the storm’s earlier toll of 67. Millions are without power. Floods have hit homes and the New York subway system.
