Good morning. It's 74°, humidity is 97%. There's a fair chance of rain. The high will be 90° but it will feel like 101°.

Nothing planned for today except some cleanup on the layout. It's a bit cluttered after working on the newest Frankenstein F unit. I put some weight into it last night so it weighs slightly under a pound. All that remains is to obtain and install a decoder.

Morning guys

Got the skinnies and slicks stuck in my car last night. There's hardly any room left for tools, jack, or the cooler in my car. My father is carrying all that stuff in his car. Off course I was waken up my a monsoon... Hopefully it's dry around 11am so I can go racing.

I've managed to get most of the paint off of the DRGW B units, but the A is very stubborn. As in nothing has came off of it yet.Which reminds me I need to get a stewart dummy and powered chassis.

Right now I'm watching whatever movie is on FX. It's like "Mad Max,"  "Resident Evil," and some other stuff rolled into one.

Lee, Nice looking puppy there. Hope she's easier to train then my puppy.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good morning,  Diners. Coffee, please, Chloe.  We left the wedding party at 10:00 last night, and it was still going strong.  The tequila shots were flowing, and the music was loud.  I hope that the neighbors got flowers and a warning before the wedding.

Curt,  You seem to have a somewhat unnatural relationship with your TT.Question

Jeffrey, Nice evening shot.

Lee,  My machine is a Janome, but it came with a GE card.  Four year no interest contract.

On an exciting note,  my Walthers order came in the mail yesterday.  We didn't find it until this morning, so what a treat.  I plan to do one quilt block this morning, and then head to my work bench ( on top of the layout at present ) and work on my car shop.

Later,  Sue

Mornin' folks,

Zoe, I'll have the breakfast buffet this morning since I see it is set up nicely...  Please bring me a cup of the dark roast coffee if you would.

Had a great time "working" out at the museum last night.  Was a long one though.  Sign in at 3PM, and logged off at 9:50PM with all of a half hour supper break.  Lucky we had several extra people doing train crew so the night went smoothly with the very large group of visitors there.  My line for the evening after I finished up the "Rules" (Please do not put anything out the window you can't afford to lose, such as: cameras, purses, arms or heads....  We want you to go home with everything you brought with you!) was, "Don't hesitate to ask me if you have any questions as I am a wealth of little known and mostly useless information...  I can even explain why we have Torpedoes on board the caboose!".  I told part of the crew that line during a wait at Midway, and even the guy who had a major problem with one of lines I used before howled.  He was alternating between Engineer and Conductor during the evening.  He asked if we really do have Torpedos in the boxes labeled for them.  I said the official, "I dunno!" to which one of the young guys (Recent graduate of RIT) got excited and said "Man THAT would be cool, I'd love to set one of those off later".  He got the, No way!" look from the conductor......  Very enjoyable and fun bunch of visitors last night and an enjoyable evening for all the crew.

BTW, the conductor is a big collector of RR Lanterns and brought a bunch of his own for the evening.  We also got out the old kerosine switch lanterns for the two switches we transverse on the run, had the kerosine lanterns in both cabooses, and several lighting outside up at Midway station.  As soon as it started to get dark, several crew members were carrying them as well.  Nice touch!

Lee, what a beautiful puppy you have there!  Labs are wonderful pets.

Packer, have fun racing and be safe!

[edit] Ulrich, great to see you back in here.  Hope you have felt our prayers working for you my friend.  Hope the recovery continues steadily!

Hope you all have a great day!

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Ice water please.

Has a head ache most of the days so I laid on the couch watching the History Channel.

Started feeling better around 2:30 and came out to install a decoder in the Mehano 2-10-2. Ran into a stumbling block. Wire on the bottom of the motor is to close to the frame for me to solder.  I posted on the main page asking on how to get the motor out.  Anyone here have a idea?

 Time for supper.

 Ken

This engine all so makes me think of Jeffery! I wonder why?

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a bowl of chili and some cheesey fries and a RBF please. Nope, just a late lunch. Thanks!

Figured I should make it by the Diner before July was over, y'know. (Weird on-call rotation schedule at w**k...)

Ulrich, I got a bit of a scare as I am (quickly) going through some of the 20+ pages of posts and then see about your health 'glitch.' Glad you are recuperating, friend, and you are in my AngelAngel Take the scenic route, and get the rest and healing that you need.Thumbs Up

Tom, VERY nice articulated that you acquired, and excellent weathering job! BowBow Very droolworthy, even if they don't make 'em to go around 34-inch curves. Whistling So much for the experts... Man, with the weight of that thing, if you got sound into that, it would rumble both in sound and shake.

Didn't make it to Garry's for that trip Saturday before last. Sigh Too many days left at the end of the pay period, but not enough funds (and according to the car's readout, not enough gas to make it to Garry's, let alone back home again. Will try again to get over there, though Garry will be a bit occupied for a while.

At least payday is tomorrow. Smile Saw that (as promised, but you know how job promises can be...) I got a raise (small one... I figured that if that holds for an entire year, it'll be a bit over $500 for the year (after several years of no raises). But it will start to catch me up - a little.... (spread over two paychecks a month, the raise would be gone by my eating out (fast food) a couple of times a pay period)

Ken, yep, I'm sure Dave is in a hurry for you to come back, all right. But don't push yourself more than what your doctors say is the earliest that you can get back to the salt mines there. Was your settlement that you mentioned related to Bank of Stupid, or something else (that I probably missed in those 20+ pages)? Ooh, just caught your photos of the MRC F-7's - niiiiiice!!Cool I agree, they look great, and if they run well, they must be awesome, Ken!

Barry, keeping on with AngelAngel for your progress. At least you can get out of the car better now (like when that guy crowded your car...). Accidentally reformatted your hard drive? Ouch! Hopefully you had backed up not long before...(You do make backups, right?Whistling) It does sound like your place would be a good one to w**k at. Yeah

Jeffrey, we only tend to catch the very edges of most of your storms/showers. Last week we got a few thunder rumbles and a few drops on the car windshield, but it didn't amount to much. Scary 'almost' thing with your getting into the van. Surprise Stay safe - we don't want a bunch of Diners out at the same time (in the hospital or laid up at home, either one). AngelAngel Your Frankenstein-7 unit looks good. Thumbs UpThumbs Up

Curt - (my bad) belatedly, thank you for the photos you've been posting (all those from your trip still?). Thumbs Up Oh, I forgot - on your turntable, did you get the newer ones that have DCC already built-in, or did you install your own controls for turning it?

Sue - 'nuff said...Whistling Wink Sounds like the wedding was "a good time had by all" (well, maybe except for their neighbors) That idea about the flowers and warning sounds like a good one.

Darren, thanks for the video from the Goosefest - I had looked away when the part identifying the Goose as such went by, but from the sounds, I was suspecting it was a Goose. Cool! Bow

Ray, good to hear you got your files back together with your iMac. The paperw**k mess(tm), is another matter, however....Smile, Wink & Grin The RR Museum's 45-tonner does look sharp - they've done a great job restoring it! Thumbs Up I know that if I ever get up to the Finger Lakes area, I want to swing by the RR Museum there and take a tour with you.Yeah

Todd - you actually did NOTHING the other day, and got away with it? And Brenda said "Good for you!"? WowBow You'll have to tell us your secret, okay? Ah, you have a Master bathroom project coming up? NOW I see why Brenda said "Good for you" about your 'nothing' day - she wanted you to rest up so you'd be all ready for the new PROJECT... (dum, dum, duh, dum... - key ominous music here...)

Lee, Katja looks like she will try to pull your arm off when you take her outside for a (euphemistically called) 'walk'... She has all that puppy-romp-and-run quality to her, from the photos, I'd say. Good choice (that she made, right?)! Thumbs Up

Packer - hope you did well at the races today. YeahPirate

Galaxy, are you and YOH rested up from all your 'cruising' the Faire-grounds? Smile, Wink & Grin

Don't think I mentioned last time I was in here (which was a while ago,..), but I'm pleased with some detail castings I got in from Rusty Stumps not long ago. I got an L-shaped w**kbench (with tools and clutter on it), a general store set with several cabinets with goods on them (and a cigar store statue), one of those w**kbench panels for a wall (where you hang up tools, with tools on it) with a small shelf on top (with a little more clutter on the shelf). Don't know if I can post pics as is, but the detail of the castings is great - way beyond others that I have bought before (and the others needed flash cleaned up, etc.), Also got some laser-cut windows for scratchbuilding (both for wood structures and others for masonry buildings). After I get my paint and weathering done on them, I'll post photos, or go to his website and take a look. (The pics on his website don't begin to show the detail he puts into them!)

Our weather here has eased off a notch. As Todd (I think it was) said, it was "only" in the 90's (F). This weekend it improved, mostly because initially, the temp was in the 90's but the humidity with it almost cancelled out the temp difference. This weekend, a weak front moved through, and we got northeasterly breezes, with a bit lower humidity, so it is manageable - it was about 68 F (20 C) this morning. Smile

The main street to downtown (Broadway) here is torn up for a bunch. There's some 'beautification' project being done (co-incidentally, the local gambling casino should be done in about November (around Thanksgiving time...)). They're re-doing the street for a lot of blocks, even taking up old trolley/railroad tracks that had been covered over with some asphalt/blacktop years ago. Making things a bit of a mess(tm) to get to some places downtown (if you don't plan your route way ahead...).

Well, I've yapped long enough (as a sigh goes up in the Diner...), so I'll finish off my meal and head for home. Hoping to get back in before another coupla-dozen pages get posted...

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Evening guys

Well the races went; or didn't depending how you look at it. A lug nut for the slick broke when torqueing them on, so I pulled on out of the skinnies to use. My father said the car would be less stable with the skinnies and slicks, so I figured slicks with my large (255) street tires would be pretty stable. So I made a run, and it wasn't a very good one. 9.09 @ 79 mph... Bogged because I launched at 2,000 rpm, and it was running rich. Then it started raining. During the rain delay we adjusted the computer and figured out what the new engine for my car would do if I got the 331 stroker kit a friend has*. The rain let up and the track gots tried drying the track. Only for it to rain again. So 1 run, and a rain out in a nutshell.

*As for the 331 stroker, if I get it it and keep everything else the same as my planned 306, according to the computer programs my father has, it will make between 390-465 horsepower and 350-475 torque. Best part, according to the 1 program with the simulated dyno, it says 275 hp and 300 torque at 2000 rpm. The low end torque will help me get really good gas mileage too boot. IIRC, Ken said his charger made 300 at the same rpm, but my car is half a ton lighter. Of course this is speculation and there is no guarrentee that I'll get it (I hope I do).

Ray, I had fun on the one run I had, I just wish it didn't get rained out.

Todd, Is Joe's crab shack a chain? There is one down here, but I thought they were only local.

Ken, Is it because that big electric is grey and black like his L&A? IIRC, that thing would be a"Little Joe" on the Milwuakee RR.

Ulrich, Good to see you back.

Vincent

And another weekend bites the dust, but it has been a good one. We went to the train show yesterday, and sure enough, I bought something I hadn't been planning on. I have been collecting HO locomotives and rolling stock for railroads of western Pennsylvania. So yesterday there's this SW-1200 painted for the Aliquippa & Southern Railroad. The problem was it is "O" gauge by RailKIng. But as I doubt anyone will ever produce one in HO, and buying this one would be a lot cheaper than having something custom painted, I decided to go for it. I'll try to pick up a small display case for it. It really is a nice addition. However, now I need to wait until Christmas when my nephew puts up his Christmas tree layout to see it run.

I did notice a couple of things at the show. The first is that there seem to be a lot of buying going on. Lots of folks walking around with full bags. The other was there seemed to be a lot of young couples. A lot of the ladies were not just along for the ride either. They were definately shopping for themselves. Attendance seemed to be a little better than the last couple of shows, but I might be off the mark about that one.

We got about 2 hours in railfanning this morning. Decent with 6 trains in 2 hours, one with Dash-9 in Operation Life Saver paint. Haven't seen one for some time now, so that was a nice catch.

Curt - Wanted to let you know how much I admired the weathering you did. I see that look all the time here on Norfolk Southerns main line.

Lee - Have fun with the new pup. I had dogs (Mongrels) all my life, but after having to have the last one put down, we decided not to get another. It's been many years now, but I still miss having one.

Evenin' folks!

Janie just a decaf for me.  Thanks!

Spent much of the day in the train rooms doing some odds and ends.  Installed a small piece of plywood that will be an extension of the upper track in the rebuild.  It is just a couple feet long and will take the upper tracks to the oak board that becomes the upper level staging in the room.  Then I installed another tortoise machine off of the lower track for a turnout that will lead to an industry or two.  Also put in some ties along the same route.

Sitting here yawning so I think I need to catch some Zzz soon.  Hope you all have a good night.  Prayers to all in need!

Jim, This is a late thank-you for your welcome aboard. I have responded on three different occasions, and all three times have posted to the ether. I should not be left alone with a computer. To answer some of your questions, my layout is 4X8, with another 4X8 to bolt to the end to make 16X4. I am still in the negotiating stage with the Blond Italian I married for the second table to be set up. I have been collecting N-Scale engines and rolling stock for over ten years, and have started building this past year. I have an eclectic collection, but prefer steam. My Grandfather retired as the Yard Master for Missouri Pacific in Brownsville Texas in 1940, and was brought out of retirement January of 1942 retiring for the second time in 1946. He would take me with him on some of his trips to the yard and I was allowed into the cab of some the engines. Under his watchful eye I could pull various levers, twist valve stems, and in general, have a hell of a good time. I would blame this exposure to my interest in railroading. My tables are designed to pivot, in appearance they resemble harvest tables, I built them this way to make it easier to run the wires underneath. I no longer bend as I did in the past, and Uncle Arthur has eliminated kneeling for any amount of time. My layout such as it is emanates from a 12 bay roundhouse, coal clean out pit, fueling station, and water tower. There is no formal plan as such. I have 4 power packs for four different blocks. I have just finished wiring in my volt and amp gages, and have started running hook-ups to the turnout switches. I have had some re-work, exchanging DC turnouts to replace AC powered ones. My system and control switches are DC. Forty years ago I had a HO layout for my boys, but never got as involved like the present. I was forced out of law enforcement, had combined service of 28 years, but after my third heart surgery was told "it's time ". Today I amuse myself with the up-keep on the house I built, getting the fire wood ready for the winter, and have started cleaning out the garage to make one less thing the Blonde Italian will be faced with when I quit my consumption of oxygen.( I don't buy green bananas .) My layout consists of three oval tracks, with turnouts for the roundhouse, two bay work facility, ash dump, and siding track. I have switches on two of my outside tracks so I can continue them when I bolt the next table on. I have taken pictures of the layout, and will try to post them. Some of my engines are DCC equiped, and I have a Bachmann E-Z command control center, but I want to finish the system with the DC before converting to DCC. Again, thank you for the welcome Jan White (herrinchoker)

Good morning, Diners.  Coffee, and then a quick run before work.

I managed to get a few battins on the car shop.  I forgot how slow it is.  I was going to do an india ink wash, but do I have to worry about the glue releasing?  I am new to using Allene's quick dry glue.  I suppose that I could always use paint.  The shop will be at the end of the NP yard.

Good Morning!!!

Ham and cheese omelet please. And of course coffee thank you.

Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 102.

Ulrich- Glad you stopped in. Prayers for a quick and successful recovery.

Vincent- Yes Joe’s is a chain. Probably a franchise. You don’t see them around like a Chili’s though. They must be more selective about their locations than just letting one be dropped one in every town because someone wants one. Probably the lack of closeness adds to the allure and the profit margin at the end of the year.

Jan- Sounds like a nice layout in the making. Now as a new project, you must spend some time….taking pictures of said layout and posting for us to see. I have no imagination. Sorry. No imagination.

Looks like I’ll be heading to Menard’s today after the Church stuff and get some stuff to begin the bathroom redo.Sigh And it starts again.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Good morning. It's 75 with 98% humidity. The high will be 92 but will feel like 104.

I'm somewhat lightheaded and dizzy this morning. My vision is a bit fuzzy as well so no detail type work today. Blood sugar level was 105 before taking meds this morning. BP is 106/66 (normal). At least I don't have a headache. Right now I'm just watching my three GP9 Frankenlocos pulling a string of seventeen cars around the layout. Today may be a good sleeping day.

Good morning.

Jan ... It was good to read your write-up about your layout and your interest in trains. I hope you can post more about yourself and your model railroad. Do you model any particular era or railroad?

Bill T .... There is quite a contrast between your 100 year old photo and railroads of today.

JimCG ... Glad to see your post. you do a great job of reading what peoiple say and commenting.

Ulrich .... Glad you can post. Thanks for communicating with Galaxy about your situation. Galaxy did a great job of relaying your status. Get well soon!

Barry ... I hope your health continues to improve.

Curt ... Have you tried kissing the TT as it revolves?  Might be challenging.

Ken .... I hope your health keeps improving too.

Tom in PA ... Sounds like a great train show.

Worked a little on the layout over the weekend.  Still doing some re-wiring.

Leaving for Nashville soon for more medical appointments. Surgery will be in next week.

Cheers.

Good morning from SunnyHotMuggyCal.   It hit 103 here yesterday, supposed to be about 98 today, with some thunderstorms predicted.  Seems some of that tropical moisture that headed into Nevada from Arizona yesterday is deciding to hop west over the Sierra Nevada's and give us a little action.   As I keep saying--if you don't like the weather around here, wait five minutes, LOL!

Came out of 'retirement' and played the noon Mass yesterday at St. Francis of Assisi.  Haven't played piano since September--but they needed a sub yesterday and I was it.  I'm amazed at how 'in shape' the old fingers were, after a mid-week rehearsal and a catch-up run through just before Mass.  Of course the fact that the Cantor was young and pretty and had a VERY neat voice helped, LOL!   It was Baptisms, so we had about six little ones yowling while they got dunked in the Holy Spirit, but it all went very well.  The violinist working with me asked me "How come they're always so NOISY?"  and I just shrugged and grinned, "It's in their contract."   After Mass, the priest came up to me and said, "Tom, you're not REALLY retired, are you?"  and I said, "I guess not, Father Ken."  He smiled and said, "Good."  So it looks as if I'm putting my foot back into the waters, so to speak.  We'll see.   Gotta admit, playing for Mass kind of revved me up again.

Well, I found out that the laws of physics are alive and well when it comes to my new locomotive--and hoo boy do I feel STUPID!  Embarrassed  Immediately out of my main yard at Deer Creek, the track goes into a 36" horseshoe curve on a 2.2% grade, then after a short stretch of straight track, reverses itself in order to gain enough elevation to tackle the approach to the Buttes and Yuba Summit.  But that reverse horseshoe is designed somewhat like the trackage in Blue Canyon on SP's Donner Pass line (sorry, I still can't accept the fact that Donner belongs to Uncle Pete, yet, LOL!).  Which is also the nastiest grade (2.4%) on the Donner route.  Hooked up about 21 cars to the 4-10-2 and let her rip out of Deer Creek.  She was doing fine until she hit the reverse curve, and then she decided that she preferred going straight.   Well of COURSE, she wanted to go straight--all that drag-force behind her.  Backed her down to the yard, put on a 2-10-2 helper, sent her out again and voila!--no problem.  The helper loco was guiding her through the reverse curve.  They looked quite nice together, so I'll just pair them up kinda/sorta permanently.  Besides, I'm a sucker for double-headed steam, and my SP 2-10-2 is a Westside of about the same vintage (and reduction gear), so they're like sisters under the skin, so to speak.   I'll get some photos of them working together.

Well, that's about it from MuggyCal, it's clouding over and looking kind of nasty.  Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Mornin'....er.... Lunchtime I guess?

Zoe, can I still get breakfast?  OK, then I'll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes with lots of Maple Syrup and a cup (or tow) of dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug.  Please and thank you Ma'am!

Late getting started today.  Was woken up in the middle of the night a couple times when Thunderboomers rolled through.  They gotta make some real noise to wake me up!  We got just under a half inch of rain from them so it was a good thing.  Last night we had some brownouts so I shut off the computer for a while.

Tom, love the photo!  Beautiful scenery you have created.

I have some items I have been putting off for way too long to get done today, so I'm not hanging around long.

[edit] Looks like lunch is on me, so I'll leave my credit card with Zoe over lunchtime.

Later!

Good Evening Gang!

The day wasn´t too bad - as it seems, I am on the road to improvement. Maybe it is also the weather, we have a spell of summer at the moment.

I have been watching train videos from UK most of the day. There are many old films available on the tube, giving a good inside view of what railroading in UK was like in the 1940´s and 1950´s. I also found a video of steam on the Settle & Carlisle line, my favorite line in the heartland of Great Britain.

I hope everyone has a good one!

You heard him, one of everything. That includes one Tabasco lemonade made with my special hot sauce. That'll clear his sinuses.
