Janie, just a decaf for me tonight.
Another hot day today here in the Finger Lakes... Got up to 92°F early this afternoon. Currently still very warm outside at 83°F..... Tomorrow will be about the same. I will be at a friends house helping to do "Crowd Control" while he is displaying his layout (open house) for the LOTS Convention in Rochester this week. They will be arriving by the bus load I guess. About 50 people on each of 2 buses (one morning and one afternoon). They will get divided into 3 groups for the tour. I get to hang out with the group being entertained in the Garage (think no air conditioning......). These are some of the same folks That were out at the Museum last Sunday.

Ulrich.... Verdi! Ah, where would Italian Opera have been without the old farmer..... I am glad he was a terrible farmer and had to go back to the city and create operas to pay the debts on the farm every now and then!!! I thoroughly enjoyed the sound track myself! You know these kids today have no sense of real Culture today! Probably just shut off there ears for that unit in music class..... If my 8th. graders were giving me trouble, I would threaten to start singing Donizetti BTW..... If they had known how dirty some of those songs were, they might have payed better attention.....

Well, it's our turn, we've got two forest fires going, one to the west of us in the Coast Range and the other to the east of us in the Sierras near Colfax. The one on the Coast Range is about 70% contained, but the one in the American River canyon near Colfax has grown from 225 to 700 acres today and is threatening homes. The area is very steep and heavily forested, so I'm hoping that both CalFire and U.S. Forest Service can get a handle on it soon. So far, the only way they can get to it is to fight it with air drops, since the canyon walls are close to 90 degrees on either side of the river up there. Luckily, there is no wind up there, but it's so hot and dry that conditions are pretty explosive. And the smoke is filtering down here in the Valley, so it's not very pleasant to breathe outdoors today. Had a high of 105, but tomorrow's supposed to be down to the mid-90's, and back to seasonal by the beginning of next week.
Further saga of the 4-10-2--in case anyone's interested, the locomotive type was built for both the UP and SP by Alco in the late 'twenties. The original idea was for a 3-cylinder 2-10-2, but the weight of the third cylinder necessitated a 4-wheel leading truck. UP had 10, which they called "Overland" type, SP had 49, which they called "Southern Pacific" type. This Westside is probably an import from the 1970's, since it has an open-frame motor and quite a bit more side-play on the drivers than recent brass imports. Minimum radius is 30", and she can slide through #5 turnouts without a hitch. I'll start painting her this weekend as soon as the weather cools down a bit.
Lee: I'll be using Floquil--it's an easy paint job, just flat Grimy Black with a silver smoke-box front and some red trim on the cab windows. SP didn't seem to be very fancy with their big freight locos, at least not in the period I'm modeling. The loco is finished with a brass paint primer, so I'll just clean it up with vinegar and water to 'etch' it before I start spraying. I've got detailed color photos of SP #5041 to guide me.
Here's a photo of the loco on 34" radius--as you can see, the overhang isn't THAT bad, even though this is the largest non-articulated loco I have. And with all the weight in her boiler, she really HUGS the track.
Well, it's starting to cool off just a little, so I think I'll take the big lady out to the garage and break her in some more.

Evening All,
I w**ked 4-16 hour days this week and will be doing the same the next 2 weeks. I'm paying back the people that worked for me while I was out. Hopefully I have my last Surgeon visit tomorrow. Yesterday I had a arterial scan done for my work physical coming up this month. It was all clear so I was happy about that. While at work I drop in and read the postings but never seem to be able to post now that we are in our busy (very busy) season. It amazes me the number of people I have to treat because they are in 90+ heat all day with no food or water. I guess stupid people make EMS possible.
Anyway nothing much else to report train wise. I got in some WS miners, welders and industrial junk for the mine. I also put in a fire light at my Hobo camp. MOH was very happy with that. There is a train show in the area on Saturday I will go to but without high hopes.
I'm getting ready to thin out some of my passenger motive power (PA/PB and E-7's). Of course it is in Pennsy livery. If interested please start a conversation with me otherwise I will begin selling on Ebay in a couple of weeks.

Ken- Take care of your toe. You have to be your own advocate. Because of things I have seen I have a pretty low opinion of VA facilities. I hope yours is better.

The officiant of the ceremony is a newly minted minister friend of ours..we were his first "test case"{ahem}....he took a ceremony he devised for his son's wedding and varied it with the vows from our first one and blended them together to a beautiful moving piece! It took place under the decked pergola of his North-Eastern acre garden of the 3 acre Manor house grounds. They provided us a light lunch adn were pleased to do so "to buy this kind of crap once in awhile" {Tee Hee} {Deli sandwich meats and Kaiser rolls and antipasto salad and such}. We provided the cake. a lovely two layer number MOH had worked up in the Bakery Dept. of the store..with 3 {pink} roses on a filed of white with a silvered double-hearted topper.
I AM EXHAUSTED..!!! I think we go take a nap now...

Gary I did have double vision! Well the only photo I blew up was of Tom's engine going around the turn and it did look like it had 4 wheels on the rear truck. Then I looked at the side shoot, only 2 rear wheels? What can I say?
Toe Front Changed dressing today and did not like what I saw. Small section of callus by the open wound is turning black! There is a dark band that is going around the toe. Nurse just called back and she spoke to Vascular Surgery and they don't seem concern at this point. I have a appointment Monday to see my MD in Belleville IL VA Clinic. But, if it look worse, I am heading to the hospital!
Smoking Front While I am at the doctors, I am going to get the patch. Seems my will power is not as good as I hoped. But I am still off the , but I do miss it some.

To be honest, I paid very little attention to the soundtrack. I can't make sense of the background music in movies so I generally ignore it. I have trouble understanding messages over PA systems too, so they get ignored also.

Columbian roast in a SOGGY SOUTHERN mug, please. Finally had some serious rain last night, which was well needed.
Had to get out the chainsaw today to cut out a rather large tree which fell across two fences the other day. Took out one section of the big horses side of "pond road" and the other section belongs to the mini horse paddock. Whew, glad that one is done. Have been making good progress on farm stuff these days, although it is taking a toll on me. Some days become mandatory rest days.

Gary Unless I am seeing double Tom's new engine is a 4-10-4. On the I Hate Rust tag, when I joined the site I was still a car guy at heart. That was my tag on the Charger website, so I used it again.
After I get done with doing my Antibiotic drip I am going to work a little more on the Dash 9. My RIP Track is all most clear. After I get it done rather it still making racket or not (well it runs and that is something) I am going to test my Rio Grand PK 2000 SD-7 and see if I can find why it ate 2 decoders.
Feeling better today, lots of caffeine!

Currently 82°F outside and bone dry.... If ya ain't watering it, it ain't growing around here. A lot of upset farmers in these parts. First the frosts this Spring after very warm temperatures killed off the fruit crop, and now the corn crop is on the verge of going as well. Add to that most all vegetables and the second cutting of hay.

It's these little gems as to why I have been on a crusade to locate and photograph as many of them as I can. Who knows, some modeler might want a photo of the Alma Junction Depot someday and know where it was located at. Not many historical photos of some of these out of the way depots of the narrow gauge era such as this one taken in 1915 and you don't see much of the Alma Junction depot in it

Vince Subeframe connectors really make a car handle and ride much better! After I installed them in my 69 Charger car rode better than when it was new. All my squeaks went away as well! 69 Chargers where never meant to last 169,000 miles.
