Garry!

You did good man!!!

Need I say that without your prompt action the outcome could have been tragic. I'm absolutely sure you know that. Thank goodness it wasn't.

If I can, I would like to add a little bit of information regarding the situation Shelly found herself in. I was taught that pounding someone who is choking on the back may force the obstruction further into the airway, making it that much harder to remove. Somehow, slapping a choking person on the back has become ingrained in our culture because it is the first thing that almost everyone thinks of doing.

Perhaps some of our fellow modelers with up to date first aid training would care to wade in.

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Good morning all:

Doc removed all but one-half of one parathyroid Friday morning so far I feel pretty good.  I’m trying to get caught up on posts this morning.

Today I’ll supervise my GF harvesting the first of the rhubarb since I can’t do it myself….

John, that DD looks really good.  Will that find a spot on your port facility?

Jeremy good luck on the job hunt.

Jim, I’m building the layout for a friend – friends, grandson.  I did see the VGN layout and thought that was a little much for a starter layout.  I want this layout to be easy to upgrade and simple to operate.  The one I picked has 9 sidings, 11 turnouts, and 8 industries.   One siding runs directly off the mainline to the table edge for future expansion.  Not enough money in the budget to supply all the buildings so I’ll have to build and detail it to allow for various buildings.

JR, you got stuck in AKRON; don’t feel bad it happens to all of us.

Curt, how are you feeling?

Garry, nice job, maybe next time she gets soup and you get steak.  My daughter choked on a piece of celery once and I had to grab her in my arm almost upside down and hit her in the shoulder blades so hard I thought I was going to break her in half before the food popped out.  I don’t know who was more traumatized her or me afterward.

Ok I think I’m all caught up on posts and since I’m stuck in the house on light duty I should be in and out of the diner all week…

Good morning. It's 83° and partly cloudy. The high will be 98° and it will be mostly sunny.

I have to do some clean up work on the layout today. There's one outdoor job to get done. Changing out the left front turn/park light bulb on the van. Other than that it's just relax, watch some movies and run some trains.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday Breakfast Buffet thank you.

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 94. They have been pretty good about getting when it may rain right. Problem is when it rains, and I’m not exaggerating, out of the huge mas heading towards us, we get not enough of a sprinkle to dampen the dust on the table.

Lee- Glad to see you back. Things are looking well for you on the parathyroid? Or should I say single thyroid. Our rhubarb didn't do well this year. It really needed split two years ago but with all that was going on I didn't do it and now it's choked itself out. I'll split it up good this year. Say speaking of that, tell Dorothy when she picks the Rhubarb that the best way is to get a good grip and bend at the waist, not the knees. Don’t squat.  Well…., at least from the supervisors point of view.  Wink

Ok,(whew) I was fixin to question Brenda on where she had been Laugh. I was gonna say something, but I figured I'd best check with her first to see. Sometimes I think I should keep better track of her.Laugh

Gonna take it kinda easy today, any bets I get in the trainroom?

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Mornin'!

Zoe, couple slices of the french toast with real Maple Syrup and a whole lot of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug please.

Lee, glad to hear things went well with the surgery and hope you are recovering nicely. Should be a good excuse to hide in the train room I would think.....

Ken, good luck at the hospital!  Hope they have good news to tell you about the toe.

Currently 76°F under partly cloudy here in the Finger Lakes.  High should be around 79° later today.  I have to do some laundry and get the lawn mowed today!  Grass isn't really high but there are a lot of weeds still growing in the drought.

I have a package coming on Tuesday....  Wish I could find time to actually get to doing some stuff in the trainroom!

Later!

Afternoon Tea and Cookies... June 2012
Posted by galaxy on Sunday, June 24, 2012 11:23 AM

Well, laundry is under way. So are the dishes. SO is defrosting dinner and so is cleaning kitchen.

I am "on break" now giving my back a chance to rest. I took both a muscle relaxer AND the pain pill so I can get a lot done.

Have to scrub down the stove. I hate having bacon because of the mess frying it makes. I used oven cleaner on the stove top to clean it. We had BLOTs the other day {BLT with Onion}. Makes a mess on the stove frying up a Lb of bacon. The Oven cleaner makes it a wipe and dry method so to speak.

Got all going togther and bouncing from one chore to the other.

WEll, MAYBE if i get to it, I will clean off hte papers MOH stacks on the xmas tree train layout still sitting on the table.

I shouldn't plan on doing to much more as my back will give out before dinner..and I have to stand and cut onions and peppers for the sausage , then saute those,  for sausage, onions and peppers for dinner. Hot Italian sausage to boot.

Well, have your afternoon tea and cookie break, then back to whatever you were doing!

We hit 104F yesterday and they say we will be over 100F again today...

Fires are breaking containment as well as more started.  Several more homes have been lost all over the state as Colorado burns.  It's a sad weekend here for lots of folks...

Good Evening Folks,

it´s been a pretty bad day for me today. We went to see Petra´s aunt and uncle to join them for the summer BBQ. Aside from getting my usual fits when I am surrounded by a large crowd, it was a windy and cold day. Not too good when you have to spend a lot of time outside. I had to pay a high price for that. Last night, I woke up after only about two hours of sleep, with my teeth hurting like mad. My face was nearly paralyzed from the pain. It´s improved by now, but not gone. Of course, we are out of pain killers Dead

Will be calling it a day pretty early this evening - I have a hard time keeping my eyes open.

Have a good one!

Italian roast coffee and please leave the pot on the table. Thanks!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I am back from a grand adventure and have been trying to recoup ever since. Sensory overload, complete with follow up sensory overload, and did I mention sensory overload?LOL Had kept it a secret because some family and friends might be smart enough to track me down here in the Diner and pick up on hints. Was having everyone "guess" what I was up to. Closest anyone came was guessing I was attending a MRR convention somewhere. So anyway, I took a train ride yesterday in the cab of a diesel locomotive. Something I have had planned for awhile now. Pics to follow soon. Vids will have to wait until I get my main puter fixed because this slow one is to old and doesn't play well when lots of memory is required.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Todd, I’ll pass that along to her, I already told her the uniform of the day should be hew swimsuit since it’s nice out and everything she should work on her tan, LOL.

I had my first “calcium attack” this morning.  It took 3,000mg of calcium pills before it went away.

Ray, I’m working on Styrofoam buildings for the club layout to be used as backdrop buildings.  You print images of the building walls on paper with software from www.modeltrainsoftware.com

***Flip, stay safe!

OK, on with my trip pics. First is of the loco I rode in. When really wound up, it felt and sounded like it was going to vibrate apart. Very cool sensation.

View out the cab, heading down (or should I say "up") the Eastbound tracks, easy grade.

On the side of the car I road on heading North bound...

Spanish lady in her mid 60s who loaded and then visited with passengers. Very sweet!

The las 2 pics are of the train and the Northbound engine.

 Evening Dinners!

 Flo, Beer pleases!

 Flip Good Luck!

Ulrich Hope you get a good night sleep.

Ray Thanks for the wellness wish, story will follow.

Rob Looking forward to the pictures and video. You lucky dog you! Yes

Ray Could you post some pictures of the buildings? Do they come out good enough to be free standing buildings, or do they need to be set back some to look good?

My Day At The VA Hospital Curt you where right about it being a pain! After I checked in I saw a lady that pricked my finger and looked at my toe. (Not sure what here qualification's was) In a nice way pretty much told me I was wasting there and my time. I should have gone to the walk in clinic and not the ER. They would not give me any med's till I have be assigned a Dr and that would not happen today. I explained that I was about out of one of my med's and I could not afford it again.

I was told "You cannot stay on antibiotics for ever you know" then she stared staring at my toe. She all so said "the infection looks like it pretty much cleared up, there is no drainage". (hum, never was any) She kept looking at the mass of dead black callus on the side and finally decided that I should see a PA. Great I like PA's!

Well 5 hours later, no PA, or F3's. So I told them I was out of there, I was told it could be another 3 to 6 hours. So I will try the walk in clinic, but I was told Mondays are bad. So I guess the rotting mess will need to wait till next week. Bang Head Dead

 See you all later.

Ray Could you post some pictures of the buildings? Do they come out good enough to be free standing buildings, or do they need to be set back some to look good?

Huh???  Ken, I have no idea what you are talking about..........  What buildings?

[edit]  OK, I figured out what Ken was asking.....  Nope, you got the wrong guy, Ken.  I have never used printed buildings for the layout.  I also don't have any way to even run the Windoz software on my Mac...  LOL Whistling  There is software to make windoz stuff run on the Mac, but I have little use for it.

Got the lawn mowed today, did a couple loads of laundry, printed out the mailed copies of the NMRA Division Newsletter, and actually spent 15 minutes doing some model stuff.....  It sprinkled for an hour or so here late this afternoon.  Didn't amount to enough to wet down the deck even, but we may get some rain tonight and probably tomorrow when I need to be trimming at camp.

Later!

Good Afternoon, Flo - I’ll have a BLT and a RBF, please. Thank you.

JR, hope the Kenworth’s A/C is fixable (or just needs a new charge on it). Not the weather lately for room temp water (or not-so-functioning A/C). Take care, and hope you get a break soon (in some air-conditioned place, preferably)...

And [ditto] what you said, Johnboy, about Darren’s photos he posted. Good ol' American ingenuity, eh?

Ray, good to see that you’re still being an ambassador for MRR’ing in your area. Thumbs Up Sounds like you are still quite busy with being 'retired'.

Ken, I hear you about that being dependent on the internet - I had one payment that I missed after I had gone to completely paperless statements. One e-statement did not show up - of course they said it was sent, and that I should check my spam filters (though those mean ol’ filters haven’t stopped the notices before that one or the ones after it from getting to me...). So I cancelled the paperless statements and went back to tree-killing... Sure hope that you (and Neil?) can get things resolved more favorably for you at w**k, after all the effort you’ve spent in helping others learn the ropes. Yeah If you lose (temporarily) lose internet, maybe you can check on how things are here, from your local library (if you aren’t totally tuckered out by w**k, anyway). Love those photos of the articulated steamers that you’ve been posting (bet BridgeTom does, too)! Good planning, taking plenty of MR mags along with you to the VA...Wink

Vincent, what did the doctor tell you about your problems with that arm? Sorry to hear about your mother ‘shorting’ you. (Maybe time to think about whether another bank for you is in order...) Sharp-looking Geep there (guess you have it more back to the way the photo showed it, by now)!

JaBear - Welcome to the Diner and thank you for stopping in! Have a mug of your favorite beverage on me. I take it that you aren’t currently modeling the  Rio Grande ? Smile, Wink & Grin sounds like your weather has been a bit on the cool side, eh? Wish we had some of that over here about now...Wink We have a neighbor (sorta) of yours (from Australia), OzJim, who stops in the Diner every so often. So, what’s your layout/plans/dreams like? Model a particular RR line? What scale do you model in? Fill us in, please.

Jeff, hope you’re feeling better now than you were earlier (and seeing better). Yeah This past Saturday, I was thinking about pulling up the track and making some major changes to my layout (but I haven’t... yet). And thanks for posting that interior shot of your diner (even if you didn't do that, it looks good - wonder where they found/made the fan on the extension shed on the back?). Smile Hey, your niece's dogs look like they're enjoying that watermelon.

Mr. Beasley, when you go A/C shopping, one nice thing you may notice is that a lot (maybe about all by now) of them have a remote control (turns them on/off, turns the fan up/down/auto, can run it on energy saver setting or maximum - for when you get home and had forgotten to turn the A/C on when you left in the morning...). My landlord got one after my last A/C in the apartment died, and talk about being spoiled! However, the one I got is 110v. (and on the same breaker as my microwave and TV, so I have to choose which one I’ll turn off or on sometimes...)

Ulrich, my condolences about trying to hook up the printer with the newer Windows. Our IT guys at w**k solved that one by pretty much converting almost all of the computers to 7 (most had been XP Pro until about the last year or less). Main push for our IT guys is going to the “electronic record”...I say, it’s gonna be fun once we are all-electronic, and a server goes down (or the power in the building goes down...). (Oh yeah!... Bang Head). Hope you get things lined up right on your printer - that should be a little simpler than what our IT guys are facing. Oops But space that out with some train-running time in between.Whistling (After you get rested up from your 'day out', that is. Would the pain part for you have been better if you'd had on a jacket or coat of some kind?

Barry, sounds like your area got (at least partway) caught up on their rain for the year, maybe? We’re still running several inches worth short of the usual for this year. And what's this about you becoming a rapper? Did you wear your 'bling' for the neighbourhood sale? And is there a video of it online that we can see?Smile, Wink & Grin Good to hear your part of the sale went well.

Curt, with your LHS guy who does affordable DCC installs (mine does give us discounts off Walther$ price$, but he isn’t also an electronics/DCC guru, alas), maybe I should look into moving your way (oh,wait, there is the humidity and the gators...).Smile, Wink & Grin Coal mine looks good there - are you gonna do more weathering (on the walls - the rails look nice!) and add some clutter around it? (Just wondering, you know I’m a rust and clutter kind of guy (on my layout!)...) VERY nice photos of your turntable area, also! Bow

Todd, I had never heard of PF (popcorn f...s) until you mentioned it - is it very common your way, or just when things get really, really HOT? (heh, heh...) Hey, does Brenda know you have ‘a thing’ for Rescue Annie? Whistling She seemed a bit old to me, with her always creaking and all that.Wink

Garry, we will get that visit in this summer yet (I hope)! I too was a bit bummed on Friday (and a bit of Saturday). Am looking forward to seeing you and your layout, and maybe even meeting your wife (and good thing - definitely - that you remembered your Boy Scout training for Shelley’s sake! Surprise Safe trip to Cincinnati for you two. AngelAngel As you said, we’ll figure out something where we can get a couple of us visiting MRR’ers and you and your two local train buddies together on the same day. Maybe if the weather cools a little, I can bring my tent along, and won’t have to leave quite so soon. And thanks for clearing that up - wouldn't want anyone thinking there was some kind of wife-swappin' going on... Smile, Wink & Grin

BridgeTom - maybe UffDah thinks that Chester is getting more than his fair share of ‘kittie breakfast’? Wink Nice photo (from the other side, if I recall correctly) of your excellent bridge there. Bow

Galaxy, good that you were able to do ‘the dirty deed’, as you put it. Whether she can tell you so or not, I would also bet that your OH appreciates your taking care of THAT for her and Munchie. (Angel and a candle lit). And as for your OH's boss, your idea/policy sounds pretty good to me. Whistling (Now, if I could just get away with that at my w**kplace...) Don't overdo yourself, guy - got me feeling tired, just reading about it! And do rest up after dinner (even/esp

Bill T., your photo of the bridge and its abutments (the one that Garry said only needed a Model T) looks like Walthers may have used that as a prototype for their bridge abutments. Thumbs Up

Lee, good to hear the surgery went okay and that you're on the mend. That won't interfere with you eating any rhubarb pie, will it? Whistling Hey, if you have a link to the layout design you mentioned going with, can you post or send it? (Layout plan junkie that I am...)

Flip, hope you can keep dry there (and particularly if Debby comes through. So, what does your CFO think about having a hurricane with her name? Wink

Rob, thanks for posting those train pics (1:1, that is) - looks like that was a bit of fun for you. Yeah It's been a while since I've ridden a train (and that local one goes (I forget how many) miles down the tracks, but then backs up all the way to the station - nope, mostly just a tourist-type, and I think all the train crossing signs I've seen for it say "Exempt" on them. Which tells you that they don't make lots o'trips in a year).

We hit at least 99 F here today, and when I started this post, it was 97 F (feeling like 95 F, due to lower humidity - in the 20's percent range - and a slight breeze). Bearable, so long as your car doesn't sit in the sun for too long..(Hey, gotta get back in it at some point to go home...ouch!) Took a nap for a couple of hours this afternoon; got to bed a little late last night, so of course I woke up a half hour before the alarm would've awakened me. Sigh

W**k schedule is changing in July (oh, whoopee!). One of our co-w**kers is being transferred to different job (and thus, won't be in the on-call rotation or helping out in the day for us), so we have three people to cover evenings and weekends. Have seen the schedule, and it is even more so that I will HAVE to look at my schedule to see whether I'm in the office, on-call, or off that day. Sheesh... Sometimes, it's like our department/section is the proverbial "red-haired stepchild" of the agency. And I can't seem to get myself transferred out (or find another opening at another agency). Sigh Ah, w**k, ya gotta love it, right?

Have been looking at the layout yesterday and today. Kinda like Todd has said before, lookin', thinkin'... Would love to find one of those magic wands - even one that just would move all the non-essential clutter in the apartment away to some landfill/recycling center. THEN, I maybe could start over on the layout. Instead, it may take me several weeks to get everything else moved out of the way so I can remove all the structures and other stuff from the layout top, and redo the track arrangement better. For now, I seem to be mostly putting energy into buildings - which I don't really have a place on the current layout to put them.

Think I'll sit at the corner booth and cogitate on some of those a while. Flo, if you please, I think I need a refill on my RBF (maybe two) so I can start sorting this out. Thanks, ma'am!

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Ken,

I just finished printing my first building but I haven't glued it to the foam yet.  They look good at a distance, not sure they would do well up close.

Evening guys

Well the GP5 hit a major obstacle. The cab actually broke when trying to hold it together to re-glue a seam between in and the insert. The insert is toast too... So no more progress on it. I did find out that the AMB window kit for the athearn GP38-2/SD40-2/ etc. actually works for the insert. But now I have to buy some more cabs and inserts... It's annoying to have worked on something so long and get it soo close, only to have it start to fall apart and then ultimately break when trying to fix it... I haven't messed with any other of my trains. The P2K SD7 still needs it's glazing, and there is no aftermarket...

Jim, nope, it went backwards. see above. As for the doctor, the doctor's office waited till I was almost there to tell me that the doctor was sick.

I'm a bit ticked off by the whole cab formy GP5 breaking, so I'm going to blow off some steam....

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evenin',

Hey VINCENT, Des Plaines Hobbies still has some of those cab inserts left. I bought some yesterday, but didn't clean 'em out. I didn't even think of the windows for them Bang HeadDunce so guess I'll have to keep THAT AMB set in mind for the next order.SoapBox. So far I seem to be having good luck with my "new" P2K geep. I got the body disassembled and stripped, only lost one part so far: one of the working drop steps. I also cut off/filed off all of THAT wonderful detail on the pilots. One end gets a new "steel plate" and a plow, the other gets the steel plate. The lift bars will be plucked off later and replaced after I get new drill bits. THAT's something else I forgot to order!Bang HeadDunce SoapBox

Yeah, went on a little buyin' spree yesterday to Des Plaines Hobbies and Highball Graphics. 'Tis good to find other sources than the big "W" for my habit, especially when these pushers have stuff the folks in Milwaukee haven't had in-stock all year!

GARRY: I'll add to the kudos on your save!Bow As someone else mentioned, back blows are now "reserved" for infants, but you know what? The pointy-headed "experts" have been trying to figure out how best to do choking rescue and CPR stuff for 50 years or more...they change their minds on it every five years. Whatever w**ks in a critical situation is good enough in my book!

FLIP: Here's hoping the swirly things in the sky passed you by!

ROB: Neat pics! How did you snag a front row seat???

A hearty "Hiya!" to the rest of the gang, and best wishes to all recovering, suffering or otherwise in-need.

Chris

***EDIT*** Top. OK boys and girl, place your orders, Rerun will go fetch his apron and start washin' dishes (we both spent our allowance on HIS train stuff yesterday...)

"WHAT do you mean 'Rerun will go fetch his apron and start washin' dishes?' I didn't sign-on for THAT!"

Hmm, what was all that steam escaping out the side door of the Diner just now? Oh, Hi, Vincent!

Thanks, Lee - I recall that one when it ran in MR. Had thought about modifying it for a little less rural (but not big-city) style at one time. Hmm, maybe I could get the current layout into my bedroom (it's tall enough to fit over some MRR tubs I have in there), and build a 4X8 in the living room. Of course, I'd have to move the stuff out that right now is under the current layout..(Maybe not..Huh?)

Barry, that "Spotty-dribbleness" has been true of our fronts that have moved through here in the past few weeks, as well - hit, miss, hit, miss... Now, Flip's area is more likely to get a good, solid drenching if that hurricane does a right turn over Florida.Oops

Vincent, that is a bummer on the cab (and insert). Guess (like me sometimes) you didn't know your own strength (how hard you were pressing, anyway). Good that you can get an insert to fit it, at least. I'm  guessing your doctor's office made another appointment, as long as you had made the trip, right? (Better luck on your doctor staying well for the next appointment).

Went out on some of the rest of the forums/fora. Posted my thoughts (such as they are) on the "Pre-ordering" topic. Barry, got a chuckle out of your response to the "5-most-frequent topics" one that Rich started. LOL  I was surprised at how few posts there seemed to be in the WPF topic, though. Guess a bunch of people are away on vacation (but then again, Garry managed to post one before he & Shelley took off for Cincinnati). Dunno.

Time to go looking through some track plans, I think. Prayers for good nights' rests, for healing (and doctors to show up) and comfort, progress on MRR tasks, and making some more good MRR memories.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.

Time for me to call it a night. I thought I might get more than one question about the moon gate in last nights photo. Guess that's what I get for thinking. Only work on the layout was putting a bulb in the cab of one of the GP9's, a Frankenstein naturally. It's the third loco in a consist of three and runs long hood forward. The light blinks on and off as the train travels around the layout. Just seemed like something to do. The fun was mounting it so it doesn't light up the whole cab, just the headlight. I also changed out a turn signal bulb on the van. It was burned out as I had figured. Smoke had chromed the entire inner surface of the bulb. Went to my parents place today for lunch. Two bowls of pinto beans, three big pieces of corn bread and five green onions topped off a couple hours later with a good sized piece of watermelon. Good thing I live alone. Any bugs in the house will be dead by morning due to biological warfare. See y'all tomorrow.
