Evenin' folks!

Still warm 78°F here in the finger Lakes Region with lods of chances of thunderboomers overnight, then m ore thunderboomers all day tomorrow followed by rain after that....  And I have a leaky roof!  Wonderful!

Janie, just an iced tea please.  Too hot for decaf tonight.

Barry, nice jalopy you got there.  Is she street legal?

I have an appointment to fiddle with the new hearing aids tomorrow morning, and I do hope the roofer will show up to stop the leak as well.

We had a great picnic over at my son's house today....  I will be joining them tomorrow night for leftovers too.

Think I shall call it a day soon.  Prayers for all in need!

Good Evenin'

We be still about 85F and heat index sittin' at 95F right now..we actually got to 94F earlier this afternoon. Heat index? 106F....ooooch...

Right now the A/C is sitting at a comfortable 75F and feeling nice and dry. The little Spring is bouncing all over the place and I spent part of the period chasing him...and cuddling him...Smile, Wink & Grin

Good Evening All,

Just thought I'd stop in and wish our veterans a pleasent Memorial Day. Been working stupid hours and racing every weekend though this weekend was a busmans holiday with my son and i both on track with the customers. Yesterday and today were just workdays as I try to keep up with jobs but I'm not complaining. Lots of others are still unemployed.

Have been working on the layout when possible and am about 3' away from a full loop around the walls. That'll be filled with a two track swing bridge so I can get down the aisle easily. So much for my existance.

Sorry to hear about Barrys' issues.and hope the rest of you are doing well.   CUL, J.R.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening,

Thoughts, prayers and gratitude to those we've lost in the defense of our nation; and a big "THANK YOU!" to our vets and current military personnel.

VINCENT: I may be too late on this, but having battled the chop nose a few times I'll weigh-in on your GP-5. I think the nose is just a wee bit low, and I'd do just a little bit of shimming. I forget which one it was I did, but I had a female dog of a time getting a straight cut, then trying to file it evenly. I ended up with styrene strip shims and patch-w**k with Squadron Putty (white, not green). I guess THAT wasn't too far off from the real shops using lots of Bondo...Whistling

Huh. I just looked at all four of my chop-nose geeps...and whadayaknow? The nose is too low on ALL FOUR of them! Bang HeadSoapBoxBang Head. Well (down a bit, could use some rain, toads are still happily basking in the sun however), they were all planned for rebuilding/replacing eventually anyway...Super Angry Now THAT I know about THAT awesome little window part from Des Plaines Hobbies, THAT will make THAT part of the project easier.  I'm hoping to pick up some P2K geeps a bit more cheaply now THAT Athearn's ultimate geeps are becoming more prolific. Three of mine are wide-body Athearn, the fourth is a Front Range product.

*sigh*

Gonna go water the trees since we got just enough rain today to kick up some dust.

Best wishes to all in need,

Chris

***EDIT*** I see VINCENT beat me to the shim job. What I did (not enough of though) was use styrene strips laid on the bottom part of the nose. I thought about just laying a piece of styrene strip like you did, but then the thought of trying to cut-out the inside, and trimming-off the outside bent my brain...so I went with the strips. Much easier, I thought...I just didn't use tall enough pieces. I think you got the height a lot closer though.Thumbs Up

Well I tried to make a shim for the nose of my GP5 project out of .03 styrene. I cut the outside first, then the inside. Bad idea, if ended up breaking apart when trying to cut on the inside. Here's a picture with a plank piece of .03 styrene:

I'm gonna try cutting this from the inside (to clear the P2K weight) then cut the outside. If that doesn't work, I'm going to try to use .03 x .03 rods to raise the nose a touch.I don't really want to cut down another nose when I only have to raise it up by .03. I still need to make a filler piece for behind the cab on the right where the atlas SD24 doesn't have a step like the P2K GP9. I was going to add cannon steps anyways so this isn't really an issue.

Ken, Never mind about scanning the SD7/9 sheet, I found a site that had it in PDF format:
http://trainsforyou.com/images/pdf/p2k-gp9inst.pdf

Jim, I don't even know if we work together anymore. A co-worker that is a close friend of hers said she has gone off the deep end...

Gday all,

I see most of the people are on the improve.

JimCG: we have the great dividing range running along the entire east coast, up here in warm Queensland we have Mt Bartle Frere at 1622m  and Bellenden Kerr at 1593m(both about 5200') but as they are in the tropics they just get about 4-6000mm of rain a year (13' to about 19'!!)

Down in New South Wales and Victoria they have a few peaks pushing the 2000m mark and one Mt Kosciuszko  is 2228 metres our highest on the mainland. We these regions do get quite significant snow fall and have snow seasons from about June-September.

You are right, 90% of the rain we get in winter means it will be a cold miserable day normally around 60F (That is cold in QLD!!!) We do get one or two nights that go below Zero celcius, normally when the icy antartic winds come through the hinterland. If we travel 50miles west nearly the whole winter will have lows of 25-30F, but because we get so much sun it is normally a pleasant 75F day. I reckon we have a pretty good climate here!

Lion: I see the lions are invading.

Hope everyone had a good memorial day.

Cheers,

OzJim

Afternoon, Janie - I'll have (another) RBF please, and hey, how about one of those burger platters that Ulrich got? Kinda hungry at the moment. Thank you!

Well, Barry has us beat today for the high temp (or heat index) - we're only at 95 F / 35 C for our high of the day, and the 'wind chill' (love how that weather widget terms it in hot weather!) is only 96 F /35 C. Barry, better stay out of your back yard (and probably out of the front yard, too) this afternoon! Maybe your medical folks there will knock that crud out of you with only the one-each treatments again. Thumbs UpAngel

Flip, I'd go for a steady soaking - better than none, right? I'm hoping we get some of that on Thursday, as our weather prognosticators are claiming. Whistling

Ulrich, I think there isn't any real winner with wars. Pretty much everyone in war comes up on the short end of the proverbial stick. It seems that Jefferson's quote may be a bit more accurate than any of us would like:

“Occasionally the tree of Liberty must be watered with the blood of Patriots and Tyrants.”
― Thomas Jefferson

(and there are all kinds of tyrants in all kinds of countries. That's all I have to say on that...)

Shady Lions? GRRRRROOOAAANNN... Smile, Wink & Grin (Cute ones you made, though!)

Well (kinda dry at the bottom there lately), I got out the two other (smaller - the ones I probably should've started with) Main St. Heritage building kits and hit them with a grey primer coat. The heat must be helping dry them out super-quick today, as they were dry within minutes of being painted(!). I pulled the 'brick' building parts and roof pieces from my 'spray (card)board', and then hit the other (mostly frame type) parts with a coat of white primer. Waited some more minutes, and pulled the board inside and closed my spray booth (deck) door. Then made my way back over here. These are the two buildings:

River Road Surplus (with brick front and side wall) (HO Kit #104)

and

Mercer Dry Goods (frame walls) (HO Kit 101)

Much simpler, not as intricate of a shape for the walls, etc. Bang Head After I get my Moffat's Bookstore kit 'done', I may wind up getting another one, and actually build it like I should have in the first place. Live and learn...

ROTFL! Johnboy, if the Sundown Shops didn't build that, it'll sure give 'em some new ideas to try out!

Vincent, your thoughts about (not) hanging around that gal from w**k sounds like a very..uh..healthy one. (And don't get her mad at you, either - he may have friends on the outside!) What you said about Proto's parts lists sounds like what I recall from when I got my GP7's - the order form showed 'parts groups'. Thumbs Down

I'll be at the window booth, enjoying the view of the (rather hot) outside while I polish off my RBF and burgers. Dinner

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.

Afternoon guys,

Well I found some bad news about that staring girl at work. She has a boyfriend, but it gets better. He's in jail for murder and robbery. If she want's to associate with people like that, I'm gonna keep my distance.

Haven't done anything with the trains yet, but I'll probably play with the GP5 a little today. I think I should strip the Fs before I attempt gluing stuff on them so that will wait till tomorrow when I can buy some alcohol.

Ken, I recall the parts sheets for P2Ks were like that. One can't buy an individual part, but a bunch of parts to get an individual part. The numbers correspond to a parts group that has to be purchased. What number refferenced the trucks and what number is on the back? I suppose a scan of the whole thing would be nice, or I should get off my butt and find mine.

Jeff and Jim, Based on your comments, I think you guys are saying I'm close (Jeff), but may have the nose a little low (Jim). Guess I'll try shimming it up with some .02 or .03 styrene and see what happens.

Vincent

Broadway, I gotta ask (having seen that photo of your plane before) - did you actually have that lion painted on the side of your Phantom, or did you add that on in the computer? Looks neat, regardless. Smile And thank you for your service, as well, sir! Hey, in your second photo, were they waiting for their boarding passes?

I have several "cut lions" that I can paste in on random photographs, I did a whole series of them over on SubChat (before the turtle hijacked the froum). He does get around...

The LIONS *have* their boarding passes. Do You?

Good Evening Gang!

It´s been a boring weekend for me. Too hot to do anything, just lurking around in the forums and performing my duty as moderator. Memorial Day weekend always leaves with mixed feelings. I am grateful to all servicemen who gave their lives to oust this mad Austrian, but it also makes me think about those 7 million German folks, both service people and civilians, who lost their lives in the wake of this horrible war. Large parts of my family are included in this figure. In those past 67 years, Germany has not yet found a way to deal with its history, let alone a way to commemorate the victims.

Janie - as Flip is taking up the tab, I´ll go for a burger platter, with fries & salad. And add a Beer to it: Or should I settle for an RBF? Haven´t had one for a long time...

Blessings!

Cape Jim : No not drenched. Nothing heavy just a steady soaking. Had a few light gusts of wind . Heck sneeze harder than that. Curt is about 32 miles south and 15 miles east of me. I think his weather is a little bit lighter than what I'm getting. There is some rumbling to the north-northeast of me. Towards Astor and Daytona Beach.

Prayers and Thanks to our troops-Past and present.

Flip

p.s. O.K.- feast is on me. Credit card is in Flo's hand.  Enjoy.

Good Morning, Flo - you covering today for the holiday? Hey, I'll have the #2 with scrambled, wheat toast and blackberry jam, glass of Ed's OJ and another of milk, plus a Santa Fe mug of coffee, please. Thank you, ma'am. Smile

SaronaTerry, good to see you in the Diner. Give your son my/our thanks for his service, and his strong sense of duty and service. Bow

OzJim, that does sound superquiet on the 787. That 15 days of rain sounds a bit dry for summer as I think of it. Guess your 'winter' season is more of the cool/cold rain that I hear Israel's is like, since your lows (converted with a website's help) w**k out to only into the 40's F. I was trying to recall if Australia has any high enough mountains for snow..What's your tallest mountain there?

Ken, I know why you married your wife - you liked the color of her suit, right? Smile, Wink & Grin Rest up as much as you can, and have a great anniversary. Yeah (Might be a good day to stay away from the DCC stuff, though....)Whistling

Flip and Curt are either/both of you Diners getting drenched by Hurricane Beryl? Saw on the weather/news today that it's not moving very quickly off of the Jacksonville area (which is north of you, right? Hope you don't get flooding (or the power outages some places were reported as getting).Storm At least some areas there are getting relief from their droughts.

Vincent - sent you a PM/conversation. As for your GP-5 (and I'm not at all knowledgeable about the detail stuff), it does look like there's a bit more space/window above the short hood, compared to the prototype photo you posted. Great job so far, though!

Garry, good to see you got to Cincinnati (I'm guessing kids & grandkids there, right?). Have a safe and fun visit (and return back home). Thumbs Up

Speaking of Jerry, anyone heard how he's been? I recall that he had a fall a bit ago, but never heard much about that since (hoping it wasn't anything serious for him). Miss some of those I&S RR photos.

Barry, your weather sounds worse than what our weatherguessers are predicting for today! AngelAngel for some useful options from your doctor today. Hey, I never saw that small of telephone/power/telegraph poles before - yeah, and they are a bit crooked, eh? Wink

Sue, sounds like you (and maybe everyone else) had fun at your op session. A moving meet? That would be cool to watch (or do), I'm sure. Yeah

Sounds from the various reports like we have some Diners who'll be doing wiring/DCC/bodyw**k on locos today. I will be getting back to some structures and seeing about moving them closer to 'done'. After I get off my on-call (at noon). But I will be making sure I get hydrated plenty, and stay in some cool place for the majority of the day.

Prayers for those who will be at w**k today (including all our men and women who serve in the military), and thanksgiving for the freedom that all our veterans and current armed forces members make it possible for us to have and enjoy.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Morning All,

Sitting here watching the John Wayne movie called the Longest Day. MOH is at some fabric store sale. I'm feeling a little better. Called the GI doc's office but he is closed todaySad. I don't think we have much planned for today. We had to order a new filter tower locking ring that should be here Friday so we can get the pool ready for summer.

Sue- Glad ops went well. I think I have done all the prep work necessary before doing train orders.

B. Lion- Great pic. I guess there will be a ground delayWhistling

Ray- Enjoy your picnic (indoor?) and your family.

Everyone take care.

BroadwayLion - The 2nd photo you posted  of the lions under the aircraft wing is terrific. You should start a thread of captions to go with it, such as "Now Boarding at Gate 1 (if you dare)".

We went to our favorite spot for a little railfanning yesterday, but after about 30 minutes of sitting outside, we retreated to the car with it's wonderful air conditioning system. Boy, it just got plain nasty out there with high humidy and temperatures in the low 90's. Thunderstorms all around us for days now, but not a drop of rain here. Most of the lawns in my neighborhood are getting pretty well browned out. My front yard is okay, but then the sprinkler is on a couple of times a day.

Got up this morning, put out the flag, went out for breakfast, and then did the weekly grocery shopping. Home now and I'm planning on staying inside as much as I can. Will do a couple loads of laundry, but that's okay as our basement is nice and cool. Unfortunately for me, the wife wants me to grill some burgers for dinner tonight. I'm not looking forward to that particular task.

Special prayers today for those who gave all. Let's not forget...

Whistling

Have a great Memorial Day to all south of the 49th.

I, for one am pleased to be your neighbor

and a very Large Thank You to all the Veterans and those still serving.  Your Service is much appreciated.

Back at work today, in another day of rain, this last week it just doesn't know how to stop.  Storm

I'm batching this week as my Wife and her two Sisters are off to Las Vegas to take in a couple of shows they want to see.  Sure seems quiet in the house. Even the dogs seem lost without her.

They drove down to Minot and got a better price on the flight from there. $180 return. This I believe included one of the shows. So it is a pretty good deal.  Travel

No news as of late from the LM&E, have run a couple of trains over the week-end but no progress report to offer.  I will try to correct that. Be patient with me Guys........

Prayers, Blessings, Kind Thoughts and Good wishes to all standing in need at this time in our lives.

Lets all have a Special Prayer or Thought for Ulrich at Noon today.  It is surprising what a group in sincere thought and Prayer can do.

Till then,,,,,,,,,,

Johnboy out................. and back to the Salt Mine

Good morning. It's 80° and mostly. The high will be 92° and partly cloudy.

Hopefully today I can get the layout cleaned up. Intended to do it yesterday but found that I had to be in several places at the same time. I'm also planning on putting a small bulb in a GP9 if I can find a suitable one.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes w/ real maple syrup, a side order of bacon, and lots of dark roast coffee to get me moving this morning.

I would have been in a bit earlier today, but just as i was ready to start typing a line of thundertboomers passed through here.  Rained pretty good for a few minutes!  We need the rain....  It is currently 74°F  (was 78°F before the storm came through) with a projected high of 91°F this afternoon.

I will be spending much of today over at my son's house for a picnic....  In the midst of thunderstorms.  Hope he was not out fishing on Seneca Lake went the line of storms went through...  This weekend is the National Lake Trout Derby on Seneca Lake.  Trout capital of the world, we are!  Lake Trout and Brown Trout mostly.  Current standing has a 12.14 lb. Brown Trout in the lead.  Biggest one in recent years was a 17.36 lb. Brown Trout caught by Bill Wendt back in 1998.  Years ago I used to work the derby with the Geneva Teachers Association who volunteered to weigh and help the DEC  measure and record the trout as they were brought in.

I wish all of you a great Memorial Day from just down the road from the Birthplace of memorial Day (Waterloo, NY).  My prayers today are for all those who have lost so much due to man's inhumanity to man!  May somehow there be a better world where war is not necessary!  (Not holding my breath though....)

Later!

Packer

Jeff, seeing your Geep (what is your designation for it) reminds me to get back to work on my GP5 project. All I can do with what I have at the moment is get some body filler in, smooth out the top of the nose, and shim up the nose (I think I took a little too much out).

For reference:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj301/PackerPhan66/gp5-2001.jpg
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/pictures/55315/92820002.jpg
Question: Do you guys in the dinner think I got the nose at the right height, or is it too low?

The geep in my close shot is a GP7 partially modified to a GP9. It's what I call a GP9S (Sundown Shops). Angled cab from an SD40, Three 48" fans in place of the five 36" fans, one vent under the cab like the GP9 but the same vents along the body length like the GP7. It's run in a permanent mu with a mostly 'stock' GP7. Both have scale width hoods. I keep them away from the other geeps which all have the old Athearn type wide hoods. Even the Walthers GP9m has the wide hood body that's identical to the old Athearn GP9 body save for the chopped nose (the old Athearn GP9 has a high nose). In fact the Walthers body will snap right onto a 60's vintage Athearn or Hobbytown chassis. So much for the Walthers model being advanced. On your GP5 build I think you got the nose just about right. You'll never know for sure unless you make some accurate measurements with a micrometer between the model and a scale size drawing or body design plan and that could be tricky too as models varied somewhat from shop to shop.

 Morning.

 Flo, Coffee pleases.

Have 15 minutes before I head to work.

Vincent I have the SD 7 parts sheet and it is useless. No real part numbers, arrow points at motor and says 7 motor, 8 flywheel, 12 drive shaft. You get the idea.

Gary Things are better at work unless you count the paycheck.

I get off at 7:00 tonight.

                                    Ken,

Good morning, Diners. Chloe, I will have a large coffee and read the menu a while before I order.  I have to finish a mini quilt and get ready for my class on Friday.

The operations session was a blast.  We had a moving meet with 2 passenger trains.  I should have had the camera going.  Usually one of the trains has to wait on the siding.  The dispatcher has control of the main line turnouts with his computer so it took Larry and 2 others to make that happen. You should have heard the cheers.

Jim,  Our host is the prototype guy in our group.  He is always making changes to be more prototypical.  I learn something from him every time.

It's Memorial day morning guys. Just a quick stop in before I head off to work.

Memorial day has always been kind of weird for me. I say weird because, I wanted to follow in my forefathers footsteps and serve, but my poor eyesight and a few other issues made me ineligable from joining any branch of the forces. However, I do remember my forefathers on this day. In rememberance, an uncle whom I don't know that never made it back from Vietnam, and my uncle Dean who was in Big Red 1 and was at the Battle of the Bulge. Dean died a few years ago. Also remembered but still around is my grandfather who flew B-29s in Korea and my Father who was in the USAF for 26 years (although never actually deployed to a war zone).

I found out on another forum that the trucks under my CB&Q C&S SD40 are wrong. Luckily they can be made right fairly easily by modifying the sideframes from a P2K SD7/9 (the P2K is almost a direct fit, while one from an Atlas SD24/35 mounts differently). Only if I could find my parts sheet from my SD9s so I could order a set from walthers. I wonder if Ken or Garry has their parts sheets from their P2K SD7/9s?

Jeff, seeing your Geep (what is your designation for it) reminds me to get back to work on my GP5 project. All I can do with what I have at the moment is get some body filler in, smooth out the top of the nose, and shim up the nose (I think I took a little too much out).

For reference:

Question: Do you guys in the dinner think I got the nose at the right height, or is it too low?

I suppose when I get back from work, I could mess with the GP5 and the F-units a bit. On the Fs I'd just be modifying the Details west parts to fit the stewarts and filling in the cut-out doors.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Hello everybody from Cincinnati.

I hope everyone is having a good Memorial Day weekend. Here is something to think about ...

Nice photos have been posted here. Glad everybody is busy.

Ken ... Happy Anniversary. Sounds like work is much improved lately, and I'm glad for you. .

Barry .... Praying you are completely cured following the medical treatments.

Curt ... I hope your painful ailment does not last long.

Ulrich ... Everybody cares for you. amd God loves you. Eventually things will be okay for you.

JimCG .... I was out of town for the re-opening of the bridge. I suppose there again is normal traffic on US 68.

Jeff ... Was the Geep in a mud wrestling contest? (nice weathering).

As Jerry says .... Have a good one.
