Time for me to call it a night. No watermelon today. Had tacos instead. Put the Alaska GP9 in the paint shop this morning. It came out with a BNish paint job similar to a Tyco GP20 I had many years ago. Dug up an old Bachmann light board decoder and wired it into the Rivarossi/Athearn U25C. It'll suffice until I get something better. See y'all tomorrow.

***Ray, were you able to reach your son?

Cowboy Rob

Yes, he called me on his cell phone to tell me not come over for dinner.  No damage where he is, but lots between where his wife works and their home.  The event went to the East of them on a North East path that included a direct hit on Seneca falls.  They are now saying it was either a "microburst or a tornado"  The National Weather service is investigating.  Both can have a fairly narrow path and can do a lot of damage.  A microburst can develop winds over 168MPH and do as much damage as a tornado, but has a different pattern in that it has straight lines winds leading away from where the shear hits the ground, rather than rotation.  Still 1,100 7600 people without electricity in the area (read the news wrong...).  Other than a little wind, there was nothing here.  Roads are now open again over there.

Curt, sorry to hear you are hospital bound for the moment, but it sounds like you are better off there than at home!  Prayers for all to go well for you!

Later!

Goooooooooooooooooooooooood (for some of us, apparently) Evening. A plate of cheeseburgers sounds pretty good with a large RBF. Thankya.

CURT: Geech, sorry to hear about the pain in the posterior. Did they at least let you start your own IV?

VINCENT: One strip "should" do the job just fine. I started on the engineer's side (only 'cause THAT side was closest to me at the time). The first piece went from the back edge of the nose to the front angle. I let it set up good, then trimmed a piece to fit the angle. Another for the flat spot on the front of the nose, another angle, then the final long run along the fireman's side. Wasn't too tough, and it let me know without a doubt where any gaps were. I use the white Squadron putty since I'm using white or very light gray primers under the CNW yellows. For a BN engine, I'd go ahead and use the green stuff. Either way, I look at what would cover the easiest. I don't think there is any difference other than color 'tween the two.

RAY: Glad to hear all concerned are OK, THAT is a bit "too close" for comfort! Asparagus provokes gout 'eh? Thanks! One more reason for me to avoid THAT stuff...Ick!

Have a good evening folks, continued prayers and thoughts for all in need.

Chris

Curt: Good luck with that. The closest I've had to it is a diverticulitis infection that abscessed and nearly resulted in peritonitis. Nasty! They had me on antibiotics for about six weeks.

***Curt, so sorry to hear you are going through such misery.

***Ray, were you able to reach your son?

Healing thoughts to those in need, especially you Curt.

Looks like a lot of you have been having an interesting day. Not much to report on from the ol' farm here. Been hearing thunder, but the storm seems almost stationary.

Have a goo dnight all.

Evening All,

Well my day is finishing worse than I had hoped. I got up this morning with intense pain so went to the ER. As a result I am now a admission to the hospital. I have had fluids, ABD CT Scan, and 2 rounds of IV antibiotics with a 3rd starting at 8 PM. I have a meeting with a Colo-Rectal Surgeon tomorrow to determine the best course of action. Finally I have been started on pretty strong pain killers so although it still hurts badly at least it is manageable. I may get out tomorrow but looks like I will be here 2-3 days depending on the surgeon. I have been officially diagnosed with a Peri-Rectal Abscess. The ER doc said it might not be developed enough to do anything for a couple of days,

Jeff, strange you still kept the blue and yellow number area on the green and black repaint.

Nothing strange about it at all. I have decals for the L&A and the MGRy  roadnames. I don't have any for cab numbers.

Evening guys

Just got back from work and a few errands. The manager keeps changing the schedule, I was originally off today but wound up rescheduled 8-1. But then I wound up staying till 3:30 because of a mix-up on the schedule.

After work I ran to the LHS to see if they had .03 x .03 styrene rod. No go, so they ordered some for me. I just have to wait till next thursday. Also picked up some 91% alcohol on the way back home to strip the GP5 and Fs before I do some more work to them. Rooting around in my room before work, I found a atlas dual-mode decoder... Dunno what I'm gonna do with it because my zepher apparently can't read them (one of my Atlas GP38Xs has one).

On the way back from work there was a ton of smoke all over, enough to make the sun look orange... IDK what that's about, I'm guessing it's a controlled burn on the base, but I overheard some lady saying "... 90% (un?)contained..."

Jeff, strange you still kept the blue and yellow number area on the green and black repaint.

Jim, That's actually close to what I did the first time. I just used a fine-point sharpie. Since I ordered some rod, I'll just wait on the rods to arrive.

Dave, I don't know how well heating and bending would work. It might be worth a try becuase there are 10 strips in a bag, and I may only need 1 if I do the cut and sand method.

Chris, Ack. I should have grabbed the white squadron putty while at the LHS. I've been using some automotive body filler (IIRC, it's "nitro stan's spot glaze" or something like that) and it seems to work pretty good (I used it on the bachmann NE12 cabooses with some decent results), but I think the squadron stuff may work better because it'smeant for models. Asfor the Des Plaines insert, there is no glazing, but there is a cut-out in the back to add glazing. I just wish someone made a somewhat-flush window glazing for it rather than have a piece of glazing about .02-.03 back. It'd look strange with windshield wipers IMO.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

I have got to learn to be more careful and precise about what I wish for. We haven't had any rain for some time as all the rain seems to go around us. Not today. We got a big time storm early this afternoon. High winds and tons of water going sideways. Lost our power all afternoon until around 5:45 pm. And let me continue with more of my excellent timing in all matters. We ran some errands this morning and I stopped at the nursery on the way home. Bought two really nice hanging baskets for the wife. You should see them now. Pretty dismal looking. Apparently they were not storm proof. Upside is I don't have to put the sprinklers on the new sod this evening. The house is starting to cool down now that the air conditioning is back on. So all is right in my little corner of the world, I guess.  Tom...

Afternoon again folks!

There are now reports that we may have had a tornado over in Seneca County.  Damage they are showing would consistent with a small tornado.  It has not been confirmed yet either way by the National Weather service.  Some info for those who may be interested can be found here.  This is way too close to where my son and his family live for comfort.  They say over 7000 homes are without power at the moment from the line of thunderstorms that came through central NY earlier today.

More storms are scheduled to appear tonight, but nothing as strong as the ones earlier!  I Hope!

Later!

Jeff, maybe you can have the Sundown Shops do some totally weird paint job on that Geep (say, chartreuse stripes or hot pink?), and really freak out those chameleons, tryin' to match it...Mischief

How about a tyco'ish BNish job instead? Now it looks a lot like a Tyco BN loco I had many years ago.

Steps in out of the rain and wind and hail.....

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, I'll have a cup of decaf and a seat near the radio to hear the updates on the weather.........  Looks like Seneca County including Seneca Falls and Waterloo with the area South from them just got nailed by something!  Power lines and trees down, roofs gone from houses, and a state of emergency declared by the Seneca County Sheriff.   No unnecessary travel until further notice.  Looks like I won't be going over to my sons house for dinner tonight.  They are OK, BTW.  His wife got sent home from Hillcrest where she works as a teacher early and said there was a lot of damage on Route 98 S on her way home.  Didn't get too bad here in Geneva all of 5 miles away from there......

Couldn't connect to the internet for quite a while as well.  I finally unplugged everything and tried again and it came up.

Roofer evidently took a long weekend as I still can't anything but a message machine saying to leave a message.  I collected about a pint of water in a large container during the rain and wind this afternoon.

Got my hearing aids adjusted this morning then went to the grocery store.  Bought some Advil and took one as soon as I got home.  Foot feels better!  Package arrived from Kappler Lumber today so I can manufacture more scale ties for the w*rk in the train room.  I may disappear to there in a bit.

Later!

G'dAfternoon (borrowing a bit from OzJim...) Zoe - a RBF please. Thank you!

And speaking of OzJim, MAN, that's a bunch of rain! Surprise You're right, that would definitely qualify as a tropic region. Of course, you're not that far at all from the Equator, so go figure, eh? Wink

Vincent, I see that Chris beat me to it already, but that height for the top of the nose there looks better. Don't know how the chop-nose part fits to the body, but what crossed my mind as a thought (notice I did not say a good thought or a smart or wise thought...) was to take a sharp pencil, mark around the outside, remove the plastic piece you have under there, cut inside of the line you drew (but only just inside), and then glue the piece in place and put the rest of your nose on top and glue the whole assembly together. But I'm sure it's not even close to that easy for you, right? Sigh Okay... Best wishes on it, and take your time (many a time I haven't taken my time, I wind up regretting it...).

JR, good to hear you've been making progress on your layout (and are about to be able to run trains, the fun part!). Did your son enjoy the 'day at the track' (non-MRR kind, that is)?

Ken, smart move (and quick thinking) on the 'drumsticks' for your anniversary! Thumbs Up Sometimes it's possible to not do what was expected, and yet come out smelling like the proverbial rose, eh? (I like those kind of 'drumsticks' too - have a box of 'em in my freezer)Dinner Bit of a puzzlement on that decoder glitch you mentioned. Huh? AngelAngel for Shaddy to improve on her health (and appetite), so a trip to the vet is not needed.

Bill T. - neat photo today! Yeah Brought back some verrryyy old memories (maybe my very first MRR'ing ones)!

Todd, that eating snakes thing with the SF wouldn't bother me (so long as I got to cook 'em medium-well...); of course all that other stuff (running with huge packs, climbing in the rain, etc.) might... Oops Guess that's one reason why it never crossed my mind, huh? On your anthill problem, I'm guessing - being as you live more in the country than I do and likely know that - you have tried Terro, right? ("Of course I have, you ninny!" he replies to Jim...)Whistling Good luck getting back to finish up your floors soon, though.

Ray, hope your doctor helps you out so your gout bout (pardon the rhyme..) goes away. Did you ever hear from your roof guy?

Jeff, maybe you can have the Sundown Shops do some totally weird paint job on that Geep (say, chartreuse stripes or hot pink?), and really freak out those chameleons, tryin' to match it...Mischief

Well, today I went by the local HS (airplane stuff mostly), and picked up some plastic shapes and a sheet of 0.030 white plastic. I needed the sheet for a piece on that Moffat's Bookstore (misplaced the one that came with it, which means it will show up in a couple of weeks..), and I got some (nearly) square post material for supports where roof gable pieces attach to the back of the false front (it sags there, otherwise). Also cut supports for a couple other spots under roofs. Also, I sprayed part of another kit with 'brick' spray (after masking off the triangular pediment part of an end wall - which has board/frame structure). May get to putting that together later this week, after I do my little bitty expanded lean-to (Mercer's Dry Goods, see link I posted from a page or two back).

I think that extremely hot place with this guy: Devil must've frozen over. At w**k last week (when I stopped by to pick up stuff for this week's on-call evenings), our IT/computer tech stopped by and went over how to use the laptops that all of the crisis team will be getting to use(!). There is, of course, a catch - if we lose or break them, we buy them. We were told that at least we won't have to pay for ordinary wear and tear (like the palm rest area, etc.). Knew that we would be about the last section to go electronic (they're on an electronic record kick - and have had a few glitches with getting that all to w**k properly). There's even a way to remotely wipe the system if the laptop gets stolen or such, I think. But I do NOT want that to happen!

I'll be at the RC for a while and see if those chameleons show up. Hey, Broadway - do lions like chameleons for a snack? Smile, Wink & Grin

[Edit]: Well, Zoe, looks like I have the afternoon tab - how about a RBF special, with cheesey fries and/or burger platters, if they like?

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Think I overdid it with my toe yesterday. Felt the need to ice it and start wrapping it again today. It's pretty sore. OOPS!

Sometimes I wish I could feel my toes. Then again I don't. Of course my right foot is drastically deformed and would be very uncomfortable. I have a bad case of hammer toe on the left foot and I imagine that would be quite painful. I do get cramps in my feet from time to time but I can't feel much of it thankfully.

Well the shell of the ex-Alaska GP9 has been painted a nice looking green, spruce green I think. The label fell off the can years ago so I'm not sure. It's somewhat darker than the old BN green. I left it outside to dry. A little while ago I went out to get it and saw something rather funny. A couple of Carolina Anole lizards (also known as American Chameleon) were on top of it and it looked like they were trying to match themselves to the color. They're lucky they didn't get stuck to it as the paint was still somewhat tacky. I wanted to get the masking tape off the cab sides while the paint was still soft and wouldn't crack or peel easily. There's still more painting to be done. The green is just the base coat.

 Morning Fellow Dinners!

 Flo, Coffee Please.

Like I don't have enough to worry about. Shaddy my 9 year old Wolfhound was sick yesterday. She blew Chunks about 6 times. She will not touch her dog food now, well so far. She has eaten some chicken my wife gave her so she will eat. Just hope she is feeling better later today.

Over cast today and possible thunderstorms. Maybe a little cooler today, I hope.

 See you all later.

Ray- Hope the gout goes away quick. I had it once. Felt like the joint of my Great Toe was gonna explode! Actually it felt more like someone was trying to pull my toe off.

Todd, did an online search on the subject this morning.....  Found that among other things I should be avoiding since I have a history of Gout is....  Asparagus!  Yep, the very same stuff I have been gorging myself on for the last month!  I will be asking my doctor to also get me off the Niacin Treatment which is know to precipitate the uric acid into crystals....  My Cholesterol is now very low, so he might be willing to give it a try.

Stay cool everyone!

Good morning. It's 71° and partly cloudy. The high will be 92° and it'll be mostly sunny.

Vandals struck in the wee hours! Sometime during the early morning some teenage hooligans armed with cans of silver paint painted over the road name on the Alaska GP9. The Sundown police chief has already caught one of the offenders. His own son! When asked why he participated in this act of destruction he simply said the engine belongs to the L&A and the railroad should have painted it over long ago. Now they have no choice. Ezra Johnson, the teens grandfather and owner of several businesses in the town says that the locomotive will be scheduled to go into the Sundown paint shop this week.

Mornin'!

Gonna be another hot day here in the Finger Lakes!  Zoe, just a cup of dark roast and some "old people" type cereal for me this morning.

My foot hurts....  Gout again!  Thought it was getting better yesterday, but not so good this morning.  I have a hearing center appointment later this morning and i haven't heard anything from the roofer yet today....  Hope he didn't pick this week to go on vacation or something!

It is currently 78°F with high all too soon of 83°F.  Air conditioners stayed on all night as it was still close to 80 when I headed to bed last night....  And it is still May!

Catch you all later (after I go to the store and buy some Advil...).

I stopped in for my large coffee, Chloe.

Johnboy,  I am still laughing.

Curt & Jim,  Yes the ops session was fun.  Afterwards, we all were thinking that it was too bad no cameras were rolling on the rolling meet.

1 Got the metal out of the CSX GE AC 6000 speakers. Then I found some of the wires pulled out of the Digitrax DZ 123 decoder. Jeffery, any tips? I know you like the N scale decoders.

If you think your eyes are up to it and you can do pinpoint soldering you can try soldering the wires back in. And the DZ's aren't N Scale. They're Z Scale. If you can't do that I suggest getting another decoder. While I prefer the the Z Scale decoders I usually use whatever I have no matter how old it is as long as it works.

Time for me to call it a night. I was invited to my parents place today for a treat I hope they don't serve again for a while. Watermelon! Watermelon four days in a row! That gets pretty old mighty fast. On the layout front I did some work on the ex-CSX GP9 (Walthers, Front Range, Athearn, Proto, PPW). I put a Digitrax DH120 in it recently. Well I found out today the decoder has a problem. A very BIG one. While I can set a two digit address and direction I can't set a four digit address or any speed table CV's or lighting functions. It won't reset. Read back on CV8 comes back as the last entry programmed, in this case an eight. It should come back as a 129. CV's 2, 6 and 5 don't work either. The only ones I can set are 1 and 29. Fortunately the loco is an almost perfect match speed wise with the mu'd pair of GP9's to which it's coupled and currently running tail to tail on the end of the loco consist. It can be seen in the photo below partially obscured by some apple trees. Remember I said it could take a two digit address? Nothing higher than twenty. Anything higher than that and the loco just sits there or if it does move it moves very slowly. There's no burns or marks of distress anywhere on the decoder. I wonder if this was the reason Digitrax discontinued it. Oh well, it'll work until I get something better. See y'all tomorrow.

Vincent

How about using .030 styrene strip? With a little patience it could be warmed up and bent to conform to the corners, or if not it wouldn't require much filling and sanding to form the corners.

A Moment For All That Have Lost There Lives In Man's Worst Moments!

 Evening Dinners and Vets!

 Flo, Beer Please.

Well it was a Good and Bad Day today. But mainly Hot.

On the good side, got the my RSD 15 up and running. Sound great sitting there idling like a can full of rocks.

 On the bad, well.

2 Pretty sure the Athearn UP RTR Dash 9 needs a new motor. While it has not eaten the decoder (not sure why) when I power it up and run it, the other engines slow down? That is not right with a 5 Amp power supply.

All my wife wanted for our anniversary was some fried chicken. But the deli was out. Sigh So I bought her a box of Drum Sticks, the Ice Cream kind! YesShe was pretty tickled. Sometimes it is the little things in life that matters.

Well, the RSD 15 has made it around the track 5 times now, so I guess it lives.
