Afternoon All,

I'm pretty beat right now. Spent 2 hours raking the yard today with probably the same tomorrow. All the bending has put a hurting on me. On to the fun things: I laid the track in the coal yard, powered each lead, tested with my trusty K4s. No issues running the loco several different times on each lead. I also rusted the rails, cleaned them and painted "dirt" on the bare wood before I landscape. Tonight I could paint the POP rocks I have made but probably not.

Ken- That is a neat old picture. If I was close to that I would be checking it out.

Garry- Nice Modeling. Are you going to leave the walls the way they are or do something like bricks?

Inch- Got a chuckle out of your story. I can just imagine your Grandpa's face at the end.

Ulrich- I look forward to seeing pics of the boat.

As you can see I can't follow a straight line if my life depended on it.

Everyone take care.

Curt ... I like you layout photos. Thanks much for the remark on my scene. As I said, it is WORK IN PROGRESS. For now the "retaining walls" are painted surfaces.   Below is how I did one of my retaining walls in a nearby location.

Garry- I really like the cut stone wall. Have you seen that Athearn is coming out with a CB&Q passenger train pulled by F-3's? I saw it on the FDT website a little bit ago.

Ulrich:  $8.54 a gallon for gas!  I almost fell out of my chair.  I guess we people in the U.S. and Canada have little to complain about gas at $4-something a gallon.  Wow!

Galaxy:  I know what you mean about getting nervous about late bills.  I'm the same way.  Quite a few years ago we tried having the bills sent directly to our bank for them to pay.  It worked well except for one thing.  We didn't see the actual bills until we got our statement from the bank, and that could be a wait of a month depending on when the bill came in.  So for bills like the telephone bill which could be different each month depending on how much long distance was used we never knew how much the bill was until much later.  It made me think of the time we lived in a small isolated town and I was the treasurer of our church.  Thankfully everyone knew everyone else because one day I got a call at work from the telephone company's technician who said he had a disconnect notice for the church's telephone for non-payment of the bill.  He "lost" the disconnect notice while I called the telephone company to see why.  Apparently the last bill never arrived and they had a policy of disconnecting after one unpaid bill.  Their answer was, "Well, you know when the bill is supposed to come in so you should pay it at that time whether or not you get one in the mail."  I think my response melted the telephone I was using.  Anyway, I paid what was owing and the technician sent the notice back saying it had been disconnected and reconnected.  It's good to have friends in low places as well as high plances.

Inch:  I loved your story about the tea.  That was precious.  Fortunately my granddaughters have served me only empty cups of tea.  When our eldest granddaughter was little she would pretend she was running a restaurant and take my order for a meal, go away for a few minutes then come back with some empty toy plates and cups and serve me the food.  And stand by to make sure I ate it all and take away the "empty" dishes afterwards.  Children have such wonderfully great imaginations.

Another story about our eldest granddaughter and food when she was bout 2 or so.  They lived in an apartment at the time.  She woke up early one morning before her parents were awake, climbed out of her crib and went into the kitchen and decided to make breakfast for her parents.  She got a pot out of the cupboard, put it on the stove, turned the stove on, climbed up on a step stool, got her mother's spices out of the cupboard and dumped them into the pot.  Fortunately her mother woke up before the smoke alarm went off, smelled the terrible smell from the kitchen and rushed out to see what was happening.  The smell, however, permeated the hall for quite a distance from their door and they got complaints from the neighbours.  And no, child locks on the cupboard doors were useless.  That kid could go through them faster than an adult could.  They had child locks on the cupboard doors, but they weren't much good.

 Afternoon Folks!

 Flo, Beer please.

Had a hard time getting into East St Louis ILL to the Federal Building! Seems they knock down the exit ramp that led to 3rd street? Bang Head We left early and was 37 seconds late according to the time stamp. By the way, if you have to go to a Federal Building don't ware baggie PANTS. I forgot all about having to go through the metal detector and having to take off my belt! Darn near MOONED the guards! Whistling

Sues SSI case. At first we where told we had to pay back $1050.00 because we did not report my earnings in a timely fashion. But we told the rep "we fax them in every month by the 5th".  Was told again we had to pay! Again I said "I have faxed all my check stubs in by the 5th, and we have the copy's". She started looking closer and finally said "well all of them seem to be in by the 10th, they may have laid on some body's desk for a while". Button line  we where told You don't owe us $1050.00! But knowing SSI, I am sure they are going to want it back again! Bang Head

Far as the Roundhouse visit, got lost! But did get a much better view of it with the ramp we used. It is now on my To Do List. If I can get Simon 1966 to go, then it is a must!

  See you all latter!

Evening, Zoe, I see you're still here (well, for a few more minutes, anyway). I'll have the grilled chicken, a side salad and some peaches, and a glass of milk for now, please. Thank you!

Inch, I liked that (former train) viaduct photo you posted. Is that any place close to you? I'd have to agree with you about the 'W' catalog - sometimes it's hard to figure out "Would picnic tables be listed under Scenery, Details, Scratchbuilding, or Structures?" Whistling As for the price of those details, you could print out photos of some detail sets you like, and user strip or sheet styrene (or other stuff) to make your own. I've done that on some details where I can't really see spending some (say $20) price for a few teensy detail parts. (Cheep, cheep - me?)(Okay, sometimes I can be!)Wink Laugh Good joke there, Inch - ROTFL!

Rob, nice junkyard you have there - might need more cars, though... Wink I'm trying to figure how to get an adequate amount of space for my junkyard (once I get to building it on my layout). Confused

Lee, excellent rolling stock dresser you have there! Bow Well worth your time and money. Yeah Hey, you mentioned "a few Western roads" - how many (dozens?) is that? Smile, Wink & Grin

Sue - ahhhh, as in (Puget) Captain Sound Rails - Bang HeadBang Head Such a dummy I can be! Now that you said that, it makes perfect sense for the name.

Garry, I must not have said BERKSHIRE loud enough for Duke to hear me, I guess. Have you been getting as much Umbrella as we have here today? I think by the morning news today we already had almost a half-inch of the liquid sunshine. Yeah, I remember that rainy day/evening (and your posting that crooked track photo afterwards). And GOODNESS, Garry! - Are you trying to give Rod Stewart's city a run for its money - 13 stories? Surprise Wow

Broadway, your whole explanation of your wiring for the passenger cars' lighting went way over my head, for sure. Dunce

Jeff, good that you got more sleep with that documentary (several of those have that tendency for me, too...) Smile, Wink & Grin It's good to see your Diner there again in that photo; haven't seen it in a bit of a while.

Ray, in a couple of days something ought to be showing up in your neighborhood (plain white box). Whistling Good to hear your drive was okay - I had a 230GB external that was seeming flakey, and now that I put it in a new enclosure, it's w**king fine. Hope one of the two "You's" remembers how to get to the Diner!Smile, Wink & Grin (On your 'Magic' mouse sensitivity, have you tried adjusting the Mouse preferences in System Preferences?)

Ulrich, thank you for your posting that (head-on) view of your module(s). Really shows off what you've done already with them. Bow On your transition, maybe you could spread that across two modules? That ship looks really nice - and in iNvisible scale? Sure hope your glasses are good for itsy-bitsy w**k...

Alvie, when I get a few cars sold off in the next few weeks, I'll likely be doing as you did with your income (putting it to use for more MRR stuff). But I bet there are a bunch of us Diners who wind up doing that sort of thing. Wink

DerJohn, yep, our clocks here will be going forward this weekend as well. Sounds like your young'uns does about as well at keeping you 'in the loop' as mine does. Best wishes on her getting rid of those bugs. Wow

Bill T. - that Hamilton Pennsy station is an impressive one, all right! Thumbs Up

Ken, hope you get some good 'scouting' of that roundhouse in with Simon later. (And do enjoy your days off)Big Smile Good for you, standing your ground (and telling them you had the copies to prove your side) with the "SS" people. (No offense intended to any Diners with German heritage - like me). The US "SS" is way less organized than most people I know (my family or others) with German ancestry. Germans tend to be more precise/logical/straightforward than Social Insecurity tends to be. (Okay, I'll put the SoapBox back in its corner)

Curt, more great photos of your layout - Thank you!

Bob (Seamonster) - yeah, the aftereffects (smells) of some kids' pranks can last a long, long time! (Don't ask how I know...)

Having finished up my dinner, I'll be heading home. Big Bang Theory awaits (and I may do some layout designing on the laptop while I'm watching...)

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Moaning folks,

Bob (seamonster) and Ulrich:

I see Ulrich has mentioned the price of Gas in Germany is around $8.50 a gallon, well we in the resource rich supposedly booming economy of Australia are paying the equivalent of $5.80 a Gallon in Australian dollars, so that converts to about $6.20 US. - That is the one great thing about the exchange rate. Kato locos cost around $60 Smile, Wink & Grin Speaking of which, I still haven't done an order from the states for a while.

Question for all :

Who has the best deals and service for DCC decoders? Model Train Stuff seem to be a dollar or two more when looking for say a Digitrax DN163K1C than others, but they are very convenient, and prices on other items balance it out. While I'm here, anyone dealt with Fifer Hobby or any other N scale specialists? Thoughts?

Thanks,

OzJim

For the moment Donna's diner stands empty and unused. I still have to lay a road to it and make some semblance of a parking area.

Hi, All! 26 and was snowing. Again. Wind at 20-25mph. Again. I hate winter.( with apologies to CudaKen! LOL!)

Lotsa good news I see lately.

Lee, I was serious . If you're going to thin the herd, I'd like a crack at it!!

Rob, MORE PICTURES, please!

Well, PFC Son "turned blue" today. Got his stripes and beret. Tommorrow is the formal graduation.Wish I was there! He's changed his plans some. Well, alot.Monday he starts Airborne training at Ft. Benning He says 3-4 weeks of that, not sure yet if it's the 101st, 173rd or the 82nd.Then he wants to" Catch up join a Line Unit."You Veterans know what that means. Spoke to him for 45 minutes last nite, he neglected( or protected) to tell me that last part. His big sister told me  about an hour ago. Oh, well. His choices, my fears.I was under the impression he'd be heading to Ft. Bragg for SF training and advanced MO training, about 2 years worth.Things evidently change, whattayagonnado! Whew!

That's about it for now. Sorry for the sour grapes!

Jeff,

Donna's diner will need some autos and people mulling around their autos in the parking lot too :)

Today has gone alright, I got an order packed and shipped off, another few bucks for train purchases :) and had a great lunch with a friend of mine at this sweet little pub downtown. It's not the diner, but nice all the same.

My internet connection had been very strong yesterday, but now it is saying limited or no connectivity, yet it works very well, as I am using it now. So, I'm trying restore points and other maintenance tricks but always it says that I am lacking a winhttp.dll link that I've yet to figure out how to do recover. Ugh. I want to fix this myself before turning to my computer guy.

After emailing the guy who won an auction back on the 27th, I asked him if he still wanted the piece, having not paid for it yet about a week later, than no response after 2-days so I opened up a case with eBay, and after 2-days still no response. Sigh.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I'll have a hot meatball sub and a cup of decaf for the moment.  later i think I might go for a slice of the pumpkin pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to round out the meal and a refill on the decaf.  I'll be in back getting warm.

After being 60 degrees when I got up this morning, it is now 37°F out there.  I just lit the wood stove here.  been a busy day, but I'm not going to type everything out a third time.  Last 2 times I was about to hit send when I let my finger touch the "Magic Mouse" top and the post magically dissapeared into thin air.... Jim, I finally read the little pamphlet THAT came with it and discovered you can scroll both up and down and left and right.  The left and right scrolling will move a multipage document (like this site) forward or backward to pages you have already read....  It works like a touch pad rather than an old style mouse.  I am getting to kind of like it, but I have to train my fat fingers not to lean on the mouse when I move it.

A very elderly gentleman, (mid nineties) very well dressed, hair well groomed, great looking suit, flower in his lapel smelling slightly of a good after shave, presenting a well looked-after image, walks into an upscale cocktail lounge. Seated at the bar is an elderly looking lady, in her mid-eighties.

The gentleman walks over, sits alongside of her, orders a drink, takes a sip, turns to her and says, "So tell me, do I come here often?"

I should be finished moving emails from the old computer (which has now been on for several hours and is working just fine today) by the end of the evening (one more group should do it).  Then I will give the hard drive one more look to see if there is anything more I might ever need again.  I did find a couple of Railroad Fonts I bought a couple years ago THAT I have put on a flash drive to move to the iMac.

Had several errands to do today, and when I got home late afternoon I got a call from a friend to let me know one of members of the MLK Committee died yesterday after a long illness.  I new she had been sick, but didn't have any idea she was THAT sick!  She was a lovely, caring, ans kind lady.  She has asked that people send donations in her name to the MLK Scholarship.  I had to call the family earlier and make sure they had the right info.  Sad.  She will be missed!

Best get back to w*rk!

NBC.Com let me down (no Ziva) so I ran the layout. Broke out the BLI Hudson and ran 3 trains at the same time on the A line. Hudson ran like a champ? Last time out she picked the diamond ever other time around?

Good Evening Diners,

Ken, this will likely be top but even if it isn't have a few of your favourite bevies on me. I think you could use them after the time you've been having.

Ulrich, nice looking modules. I have a model of the Bluenose in my office at work. I didn't build it but it is wood. It is a little larger than yours as it is a metre LOD( length on deck) and about the same from keel to masthead. I had it at home on top of a bookcase downstairs but my wife complained that it blocked the light. I've been on the Bluenose in Halifax, well Bluenose II really. Can't tell the colour of the hull in your photo but it should be black. They're building another one as II was in such poor shape that it has largely been scrapped. Those Grand Bank schooners weren't built to last a long time. Bluenose was the fastest Grand Banks schooner ever built. As you can probably tell I have a soft spot for schooners, well most sail craft if I'm honest. I do miss my sailboat sometimes.

Tonight I just finished one of the most frustrating decoder installs I've ever done. It was in a N scale Kato RDC. The decoder was one from Digitrax made specifically for that RDC. The problem was that all the contacts are just friction with none soldered. I bet I took that thing apart and re-assembled it at least 8 times. I even took out the decoder and tested it again on DC as I thought that perhaps the engine was at fault. Well finally it is done and put away. I have another RDC but I think I'll sell it.

Lee, gee perhaps I could get a job as a counsellor at your RSA. I only have about 45 pieces of rolling stock and 13 engines. Well ok, that is in HO, I have about the same in N.

Barry, there is a good chance that I'll be in London next week on business. Are there any good hobby shops to visit? I won't buy any rolling stock, just look. Perhaps we could get together for a coffee at a Tim's? I should know tomorrow if I'll be going.

Well getting late and I'm tired so I'll sign off for now.

All I have to say is Oooh London! I'm kind of, quite, jealous really. My grandparents took my sister and I during my tender, but very much train-loving year of being 12. I'd love to go again for sure.

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Mornin, yes Zoe an irish coffee,,,, thanks dear. Suns out, winds have calmed down some and the high is supposed to be in the mid 40’s

BOB,,,, one of the G- daughters was bout 2 or so [now 12] did the restaurant thing with me. She kept bringing me empty cup n plates, then leave the room. This went on for a bit, and then she brought a plastic tub with all the cups n plates, and told me it my turn to do the dishes. I still think G-ma put her up to it

KEN,,,,,, I’m trying to find out for sure, but I think one of those round house was PRR. The other one might have been C&EI

JIM CG,,,,, that viaduct is bout 7 mile E, it’s a left over from the Big 4’s [NYC] Cairo line from me on Big Creek. A friend of ours took the shot from his para-plane.

Good Morning!! Coffee and a stack of buttermilk flapjacks please. Yes, maple syrup thank you.

Sunny, with a high near 47.

Galaxy- Wow. I don’t blame you for being cautious on the internet thing. Seems like you’ve the worst luck. There isn’t anything left for someone to do to you othern give you a ton of money. ConfusedI don’t think I’ve every even met someone who has had their information stolen. Guess I run in small circles.

Ken- Yah, no Ziva this week Ashamed. Checked and the next new episode won’t be until the 20th. I don’t know why they take these little breaks. Oh I knooooow! She’s probably taking time off to come out to see me for my Birthday! Oh isn’t she sweet. I’d better straighten up the sty a bit.

Charlie- If I had as many younguns floatin around as Inch does, I’d need the extra kick in my coffee too. Smile, Wink & Grin

Welp, Brenda has picked out her counter tops. Black Marble. Now waiting for the place to call and come out to measure. Then they will make them and we’ll be set. Oh but first …. Remember the sink? Yup. Gotta get that today, juuuust in case it has to be ordered. She wil not want to be without a sink when the new counter tops come in. We’ll have to take off the old ones prior to them delivering the new, because they’ll want to fit them to the cabinets and the walls and do any tweeking that may need to be done before they say thanks for your business. They’re pretty good, there was no tweaking to be done on Mom’s. Of course the guy did say it was one of the straightest walls he’d seen in a while considering it had a double window. He will NOT say that on this house. Our countertops are of the garden variety measure where you tell Menard’s or Lowe’s or whoever, they make send and you say, “sheesh! I could slide a toaster between the backsplash and the wall in places. Especially at the non-ninety degree angle at the corner”.

Well..., this site is running pretty zippy today. Did they do something?

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!
