Lunchtime!

Zoe, I´ll have a Club Sandwich and a RBF, please.

it´s a hot & humid day - we expect "Donner" and "Blitzen" later in the day. As I feel a little better today, I will go to see a friend of mine and w*rk on the tunnel module in his shop. I already cut some foam to form the "mountain".

Have a good one!

Good Morning...

Well...did I have a craptastic day yesterday...i got off from work in the afternoon after a rather uneventful day..modulo the fire drill we had ...and didst proceed to walk down the street and  I ended up passing out!!

I found myself crumpled in a heap with about 5 people around me asking me whether I needed any assistance..one..a fellow worker had phoned up the EMS guys and they got me to the hospital where upon they poked and prodded me and found that I had apparently went into dehydration mode and syncope at the same time....DeadBlack Eye ....I did not have enough electrolytes in me and well...stupid stupid stupid....Bang Head

So..here I be with my foot up and ice bag on the ankle getting the swelling down...and having more fluids in me...Whistling

Gee, only 5 days into June and we are on page 15!!!

Been pretty busy in the last week or so, not had time to stop and post, only had a quick browse. I will have a good read tomorrow at work on my lunch break...

Earlier tonight I watched 60 minutes (the oz version) and they had channel 9 US correspondent doing an piece on the tornado season, and the chasers, they got quite a bit of footage of the Joplin storm, they happened to be in Joplin when it struck. The piece featured well known chasers Sean Casey and scientist/chaser Josh Wurman, man the 'TIV' is cool. I have a soft spot for storms, although when they turn deadly it's always sad, It was an interesting piece nonetheless.

Later on this evening I installed the backdrop on the layout. It's a simple white with blue faded back drop and no clouds. I used rattle cans from the hardware to do it, pretty happy with the results!

Anyway better get to bed, time to get up in 8 hours.

Regards

Oz

Mornin' Guys!  G'night James, sleep tight.  Don't let the bed bugs bite!

Zoe I'll take a breakfast bagfel w/ cheese and a cup of dark roast coffee to go.  Gotta get out to the Museum for the day.

My son from Chicago will be arriving today and plans to stop and ride the trolley and track car at the museums to see dear old Dad on his way to my other son's house.  Won't be any playing with the HO stuff today.......

Chris, here in NY driving drunk w/ kids in the car is now a Felony!  She could go bye, bye for quite a while...  Might get to miss seeing her kids grow up.  Hope they are smarter than Momma!

Speaking of Bed Bugs....  Galaxy, were you able to get rid of the critters at your house?  Hoping you did.

Page 15.....  Nice to see so much activity here in the thread.  Must be the location away from all the 100+° stuff down South! Big SmileWink

Have a great day!  See you all tonight (I hope).

Good Morning!! Cup of Dark Roast and a Garden omelet with hash browns on the side please. Thanks.

Tons of stuff to do today and it’s trying to rain. Actually it has. A bit. Just enough. Oh well, probably get stopped to go out to eat with the wife.

Welcome CP in Texas! Tell us a bit about yourself and your MRRing.

I feel like I’ve missed someone.

Received my Branchline50 ft box kit yesterday from the bay. I do like the Branchline Blueprint series of kits. They make me feel like I'm putting a model together instead of just snappng the box on the frame and putting on the trucks. 5 minutes and it's togther. Not knocking the others, gotta admit pretty easy savings. Ya know, with no more trouble to do that, it's just a wonder they aren't mainly that way. Hmm Guess I’ll stick it in the pile with the others til I get around to it.

Maybe I’ll just do what I absolutely have to do today and head to the train room. I deserve a break today. So I’ll just get up and get away….to the train room. In the train room, it’ll do it all for me.

Type at ya later.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

yougottawanta

Jeff which star trek series did you get ? The James Kirk or Picard ?

I got all three seasons of the original series and the animated series in the last couple of years. The most recent additions are the Star Trek Next Generation motion picture collection featuring Captain Picard and the Star Trek: Enterprise series collection covering all four seasons. I have the first four of the Star Trek movies featuring James T. Kirk. I still have to get 'The Final Frontier' and 'The Undiscovered Country' to complete that collection. At some point in the future I'll set my sights on 'Voyager' and 'Deep Space Nine'.

Packer

Jeff, Like what you did with that old SD24

Thanks. It's now a SD27J. It has several modifications that set it apart from the SD24 and SD26.

Good Afternoon,

not really a good afternoon at this end. I managed to finish the rough landscape on my bridge module and started to paint it. Somehow I managed to drop the open paint can, spilling the paint all over the floor in our attic. Now I have to wait for it to dry to scrape it off. Could it be the the temperature in our attic, hovering at 120 F, was a little to warm for me?

Next I wanted to vac my room, to clean it off the bits and pieces of foam that inevitably float around. I switched on the vacuum cleaner and it died seconds later - that´ll be a major setback in saving up some funds for MRRing Crying

I guess I won´t touch anything for the rest of the day CryingCryingCrying

Morning All,

Nothing going on here. Slept lousy last night and my back is aching a bit.

Todd- As someone who grew up in West Texas (El Paso) yes there are a lot of sand storms, but believe it or not usually once a year there is a torrential down pour of rain that turns the desert green for a while and around Thanksgiving it snows. It is only about 1 inch but it shuts the town down. At least thats the way it was in the 60's-mid 70's.

Chris- I am right there about drunk driving and endangering childrenGrumpy

Barry- This is something we deal  with daily with the tourists here. It is not uncommon for syncope to be part of this. Just remember that dehydration has a cumulative effect over several days and usually does not happen over just several hours unless there is high physical exertion. Also several medications tend to dehydrate you. We (FD) know that when we are at work here that we need to drink  lots of water all day long. Of course the downside is lots of trips to the bathroom.

OZ- Nice Backdrop.

CP in Texas- Welcome to the Diner.Welcome

Galaxy- Sorry you are not having any luck with your house hunting.

Everybody Take Care.

Good morning. It's 87° and mostly cloudy. The high will be 99° and there's a 50% chance there will be some thunderstorms hanging around in the afternoon/early evening.

I definitely won't be doing much today. I had been planning on going down to my parents place to keep an eye on my mother but that got nixed as soon as I put my weight on my ankle this morning. It feels as if a spike has been driven through it from one side to the other. For me to feel it that acutely it would be extremely painful to someone with no nerve damage. While I can't feel much in the way of skin/muscle/tendon pain I am very sensitive to bone pain. I'm guessing I broke it - again. This would make the 15th or 16th time I think. Actually I lost count at 13. I'll just have to wrap it up tight and grin and bear it.

Good Morning,

A cloudy day so far here but it is supposed to clear later and we are supposed to get over 70F. It is only 55F right now.

CP Guy, welcome. I've been following your posts in the forum. I used to see a lot of GMD1s here but haven't for some time. I'm sure you know this but CP didn't have any, it was mainly a CN loco. I have some great video of 2816 that I got when it was through here 4 years ago. I paced it in my car north from Thief River Falls, MN for 60 miles with the highway 100 feet from the tracks. I was the only car following it. Got to hear both whistles as they used the original one when it was away from the built up areas for rural grade crossings. There is a DVD set about the rebuild of it. Send me a PM and I'll get you the info if you are interested.

Well enough jabbering from me. I have to make a start as it is yard work day here.

Just got back from Mom's. Luckily no damage from wind and no water in the basement. Yeah There is a high water table there and while it's good for the well (Couldn't pump it dry in August ), It's bad for basements. Main problem is the window wells. One actually. They have covers, but the water will soak in and fill the well up to about a quarter of the way up the window. It leaks in between the frame and the concrete. The drains are either clopped or collapsed. I'm leaning towards collapsed so it will just have to be replaced from the house to the ditch (about a tich over 100'). Why I haven't done that yet is beyond me. Maybe it's digging a 100 foot trench that is the holdback. Hm? I'm only gonna drop a 2" PVC insted of the regular 4 inch. That shouldn't collapse and will do just fine for draining the window wells which is all it does anyway.

Curt- Yep. Got caught in an actual rainstorm in the dee-zart once. You know, It doesn't as much rain as dump. The last couple of years here I've said it reminds me of Texas raining. Inch in an hour, then the sun comes out and every one sweats up and pretty much dies. Kinda liked it. Used to be a regular rain here is a light sprinkle there. That was a while ago so who knows what it does there now.

Bout time to think of who'll be cooking Sunday dinner for us. Then.., trainroom is the plan.

Morning guys

Been outside working on the RR. It's only 11 but it's already 97 outside. I've been trying to remove the earlier weathering on a dozen MDC BN FMC hoppers. Scrubbing with a tooth brush and warm soapy water works, but is time consuming. I tried some 70% alcohol and it starts to take the lettering off (I bought decals). After doing 4 cars, I decided it was taking too long. So I have a bucket filled with soapy water and with a bottle cap of alcohol added. Gonna try scrubbing when it cools down some.

Chris, Wow. A drunk and crazy mom is not a good mother. At least it didn't turn out like the one lady who tried to beat a train, and wound up getting hit by 2. She took 2 of her kids with her.

There is a video of the above showing the aftermath.

Since Lunch is on ULRICH....I will have a ROast Beef Sandwich {or "sammie" as Rachael Ray calls them} with Colby/Jack cheese and on a onion roll please.

Speaking of Ulrich...nice start to a module there Ulrich. I hope you have decided to tell your parents about your predicament and seek outside help for them! I cannot imagine your Mother, with all the love a mother has for a child, would want you to stress yourself over their chores if you are recovering form a grave illness and surgery!!!

Had a nap now on the chores....have to do diswasher {running} and fold a load of laundry {and maybe do another one too},and sautee up some onions {or Un-DGe-ONS as we call them after a kid in a tv commercial}, sautee some red bell peppers for later use with smoked sausages on a tidy small sub bun for dinner. I cannot stand there at the stove and do all at once, must do in stages....with rest in between. Oh Darn! I forgot to look for ant traps this early Am shopping at wally world!

HAven't been sleeping well these past few nights. Up more last night than I slept. That was why the nap. Unfortunately My Other Half {MOH} called and the bloody phone woke me...I could have slept more.

Have an appointment tomorrow at mental health...2 yr update on health and "wellness", I find it a boring waste of time, but it's a must.

Warming up out there now that it is sunny...Maybe I can talk MOH into mowing after work...HA HA.I would mow the yard, but it takes so much otta me trying to do so even though a postage stamp size yard. Needs DESPARETLY to be trimmed as MOH hasn't done that all season. SOmeday early AM i need to get out and get rid of grass in fornt raised planter.

SO I see little activity on the forum must be everyone attending ot chores or outside activities. Must amke hay while the sun shines...the farmers around here will ahve a bumper crop of HAY if it ever dires out enough to cut and bale it.

Well, I won't get chores done chatting here so.

I see I have now exceeded 2,900 posts. I never though I'd ever have that much to say!! I am rather a quiet person..the "strong silent type" while MOH is the Chatty Cathy. Not that Jeffrey and Selector {Crandell} and others are nto so much more prolific than I. If I do get started talking I can talk a blue streak though.

Have agreat afternoon/evening!

Special thoughts and prayers for those in need...iNCLUDING Ulrich!!!!

Afternoon guys.

The bucket solution From earlier works well. A bit too well with a brush, since it lifts the craft paint off slowly. It does have a nice side-effect though. Most of the paint was a tan and it's getting really thinned out in the bucket. I pulled some cars out and they have a nice fade and dusting to them. Gonna leave them in for a while.

I also managed to get a Roco M60A2 together and stuck it on my intermountain 60' flatcar. Looks good, but I need the chains.

Ulrich, Can't wait for scenery!

Good afternoon Diners: Another view of the rail sights close to the Diner, in case you've not wandered out to take the air. it's the local on its way to spot hoppers at

CapeJim:

All I got so far today were some photos of the 'Missouri Mural' that is painted on the 'land' side of our riverwall, with a bunch of famous Missourians.
....You'll probably have noticed out of the Diner windows the train mural painted all along the track side of the Esplanade which houses the Truro VIA station. Actually that shot is from March 2008, I think. IIRC there is more train painted in behind the loco now I've never taken a pic of it, but will try on the next physical trip there due next Saturday - if it isn't pouring again that is. Sad

Simon:

Just got done speed matching a trio of locos that will run together at the K-10 open house tomorrow.
...you make that sound so easy! I find speed matching a Royal PITA - how do you go about it?

ygw: Sorry for your loss of Mac. Thinking of you and the Cox family.Angel I agree, knowing those we care for have made positive eternal choices does make their passing easier to take.

CPguyinTX:I don't recall seeing you in before - and you are not alone as either a Texas Diner patron or a CP fan in the Diner! Cool So, what are your mrr /railfan interests - care to develop that CP thought?...

I used to see a lot of GMD1s here but haven't for some time. I'm sure you know this but CP didn't have any, it was mainly a CN loco.
...and while you're waiting for CNCharlie's  DVD Here's one I have seen myself in Edmonton AB. Sometime in the 90s . Only 30+ years service by then. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=86035

Todd:

Evenin. Didn't make it inside for the Senior Prom. Got out of the car walked halfway across the parking lot and out of knowhere the wind picked up and suddenly it was like I was smack in the middle of a West Texas Rain (sandstorm). Clouds rolled in fast and then as we were about to open the door to the school Brenda got a phone call saying they heard a Tornado was down in Williamsville (there was not. Not even rotation that I saw.) But the wind was real strong and the clouds were dark and the thunder was atalkin. She wanted to go home so we did.
...some folks will do anything to get out of an evening of Jazz! Mischief - glad it wasn't a tornado though.Thumbs Up

Barry: Very glad help was close by! No warning signs on the dehydration thing? I know when I pull a sugar low (like yesterday after mowing - not having taken any insulin before lunch  - a 3.1 [55.8 in US-talk] I was completely unaware of it. I only checked to see if I could "afford" a slice of the lemon cake Kris was serving our guests for tea. Turned out I could, and them some!) Hope your e levels and the ankle get stabilized PDQ.Angel

OZJim: Backdrop looks great - I've not tried cloud either - just a hazy effect from the brush blending the blue with the white.

Ulrich:

I switched on the vacuum cleaner and it died seconds later - that´ll be a major setback in saving up some funds for MRRing
... Is there anything like a "Free Exchange" on the internet in your area? If so, why not ask if anyone has a vacuum they are done with?  On the module Bow and I   Vincent's comment!  BTW, I won't tell you what Kris thinks of your working in a 120ËšF attic, but it wasn't complimentary! Zip it!

The beef stew with veggies and dumplings for lunch (stewed fruit and custard with added ice-cream for dessert) was worn off by digging up a juniper killed by hurricane Igor late last summer; and replacing it with a little box bush. A careful read of the label tells me this bush bought in Dartmouth Nova Scotia is a native of PA, and came from a nursery in South Carolina. Rated to Zone 6 - well it will have to take its chances on the shore here! Normally grows to 6' tall and 7' wide - we shall see.

Must get on with the added wipers for the Plymouth switcher.  I hope this fiddly work is to good effect.

Afternoon All,

Been a pretty lazy day here. I did some painting on structures today. I learned that laquer thinner will eat the bottom out of a plastic dixie cupWhistling The wife was not thrilled about that. Thankfully there wasn't a lot in the cup. Saturday I ordered terminal strips for wire routing to the Tortoise's so I am in stand by right now. I have been given a project from MOH for next Saturday. She wants a shallow table top that conforms to the bay window in the kitchen. It seems fairly straight forward.

Ulrich- Thats going to be great. Does the portal  represent a actual location?

Simon- I have only tried speed matching on my pair of K4s. They will run very close for awhile, then one will start running faster. I don't understand why it does this.

Barry- Hope you are doing better.

Jeff- I hope your ankle is doing better. If it is fractured don't you go to the ER to get it set?

Everybody have a great day.

Gotta run (drive) out to Mom's to make sure they've turn off the lights and, yes, closed the door! Then I'll be done with my day and it's..... to the trainroom!

Unless it has shifted around and cut off the blood flow there's no point to having it set. It's been broken so many times I've lost count. What's left of the joint can't function anyway so the best thing to do is bind it up tight.

I really like what you are doing with these modules.  This is a truly excellent lesson for anyone that says they really don't have room for a layout.

A belated Welcome to the Diner, Sfb! I see Galaxy has covered what few 'rules' we have around here (and there aren't many, that's for sure!). Have a beverage of your choice on me - Flo, put Sfb's drink on my tab, please!

In that case...

I'll take a Giant jug of H2O, please. I went to the Rugby Sevens CRC in Chester today. It was absolutley fantastic!!! I was there for about nine hours, and I have a bit of a headache. It was great that my father's alma mater, Dartmouth, won the final against Army. I have nothing against them, but I root with the Big Green. Good thing Army won the women's final, though, or the two army ladies in front of me might have killed me...

See you in the morning. I am working on uploading some pictures.

I really like what you are doing with these modules.  This is a truly excellent lesson for anyone that says they really don't have room for a layout.

Simon, My HO scale layout is a mere 3.5 FEET x 5.1 FEET. I have 2 interconnected ovals, and a  4 spur yard and a 2 spur engine facility inside the inner oval. It is true that the inner oval IS 15R", and the outer oval 18R" limiting what I can run, but it is all the space I can have and by golly I was gonna have a HO layout, NOT an N scale one! SO anyone who says they don't have space can DO SOMETHING to have a layout!! {unless they live in a tent. maybe}

-G .

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Just got done speed matching a trio of locos that will run together at the K-10 open house tomorrow.

...you make that sound so easy! I find speed matching a Royal PITA - how do you go about it?

Well I think I spoke too soon!  Last night when I had the 3 matched they were running really well together on our layout.

My procedure is basically....

  1. Tweak the start voltage to get them all running just on speed step 1
  2. Figure out which has the slowest top speed and then slow the others top speed with the voltage max CV.

Now to make this much easier I use the Decoder Pro software on a PC hooked to the layout.  I run the pair at the same time, but about 2 feet apart.  The using Program On the Main, tweak the settings until I get them running real well together.

However, as I said, they worked great together at home, but on the K-10 layout it was as if I had not done a thing.  The speed matching was all off, especially at the low speeds.   I think it may be due to the track voltage being different on our two layout?  But I really don't know why at this point.

Here is a shot from today's visit to K-10 Model Trains

I posted a bunch more in the WPF thread if you care to look.

 Evening Folks

Flo, I will take a large Taco Salad, lots sour cream, chips and a beer please pleases

 Curt question and an answer.

On the speed matching, how long did you run the engines together but not coupled before you speed matched them? I run mine for about 10 minutes at he same time (not coupled to each other) after I clean there wheels and the test track. (K-10 Ming section can be ran in a loop or part of the main layout) When they are at full operational temperatures, then I do the speed matching.

Your last Conversation left me confused. Would you mind explaining in a Conversation please?

Simon How was K-10 today? I do miss being able to go to open house now that I am working every Sunday again. In new videos? Big Smile Any luck with the servo?

On the speed matching Simon, there is no reason for you to remember this, but remember when you speed matched the Monon F 3 for me? When I got them home they where fighting some what? If you are speed matching in the yard where you have the Zephyr as you guested it more than likely the problem. Test them on the main where the DB 150 is powering them. Might help.

Ulrich Good work there. Are those the Portals I sent? I do not remember them being so horse shoe looking. Sorry to hear about the Vacuum Cleaner, that sucks. (OK someone had to say it) Whistling Have you tried it again down stairs? With it being that hot in the Attic I wounder if it my have a thermal protector that shut it down.

 See you all Monday

Evenin' Folks!

Just a decaf for me tonight Janie.  Had a "too Big" supper over at my son's house earlier.  Venison Steak, Corn, Asparagus done on the Grill (with parmesan cheese and olive oil), salt potatoes, and Apple Pie al la mode for desert....

#2 Son and his partner made it in from Chicago (along with the little yappy dog...)  The dog is one of them chihuahuahua thingies...  Weighs in at something like 4.5 lbs.  He is cute and was getting along pretty well with the huge other dogs at my son's house (A 10 lb fuzzy thing called Betsy and a slightly larger Beagle named Petey).  They stopped to see me at the Museum before they continued on to the cottage they rented for the week on Seneca Lake.

The museum had a good crowd today, but nothing THAT needed more than the usual pair of track cars and trailers to bring them from Midway to the Industry Station.  Some very interested people with lots of good questions.  Fun day!

Hope you all had a great day!

Gee golly, guys. I leave the Diner for about a week and look what happens - there's more posts than I can read in a month of Sundays, and you even moved the whole Diner! Hey, if you won't want me around, just tell me. Don't wait until I'm not around and then sneak the Diner off to another city... Confused

What a weekend. Took my daughter yesterday to a horse show (I went in lieu of my wife taking her, who's suffering from bronchitis), so that was 8 hours in the direct sun with 90 degree temperatures and humidity to match trying to figure out how to get her ponytail hair to stay balled up in that little hairnet.  Cowboy Then spent this afternoon spreading 6 cubic yards of mulch that had been dumped in the driveway, which I didn't do on Saturday as planned because I was busy baking at a horse show. I used some muscle groups today that I didn't even know I still had. Dead May take me fifteen minutes just to get out of bed in the morning.

Flo, I'll have a chocolate shake and some Ben Gay, please.

Good Morning,

it´s too hot to sleep. Yesterday´s temperatures went up to 90 F, which is most unusual for our region and time of the year. Did not cool down much during the night.

Flo, coffee and a breakfast bagel, please.

Simon, thanks for the kudos which I have to pass on to an unknown Japanese model railroader. I found this way of building a layout on a Japanese web page. It is a simplified version of the T-Trak modular system, which has a number of followers in the US as well. It is easy to build, does not involve a lot of woodworking skills & tools and, foremost, does not involve a lot of money. You can also extend the layout quite easily by just adding new modules. Of course, there are also some drawbacks - the Kato Unitrack is rather expensive and the system´s geometry is quite rigid, not allowing for sweeping curves. But you can´t win them all Whistling

I have some of the clump foliage left that Ken had sent me - with a little luck it will be sufficient to scenic this module. I am also trying to weather the portal and wall with a wash of india ink to get rid of the plastic look.

Ken - no, this is not one of the portals you sent me. Those Chooch portals are to nice to be "wasted" on this module - they are reserved for a much more dramatic module, which is also more visible than this one.

The vacuum cleaner died for good. It´s the switch which went out - the replacement will cost about $ 100 (!) - too much, so it´ll go to the dump. $ 100 will buy you a new one.

Seems as if we are quite a talkative bunch this month!

Have a good one!
