All aboard!

The blue flag has been removed, the switcher is coupled to the diner. The girls got everything ready for the move and Vinnie is firmly seated on the fireman´s seat in the switcher.

Merrily we roll along ...

to the July location of Elliot´s Trackside Diner!

This place is closed now, please find your way to the new location here

Decaf coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

***Ken, I borrowed your layout pic for our computer screen. Nice!

Trying to get stuff done around the farm. In the heat and humidity, progress is very slow.

Hope y'all are doing well.

Good Evening,

A hot, sticky evening here. I had a busy day at work for a change and then fell asleep outside in a lawn chair after supper.

Jerry, great to see you back in the Diner. I always look forward to hearing what is happening on the I&S. Hope they get your lift chair sorted out soon.

Ulrich, that was really a wonderful gift your friend gave you. How big is the layout?

Speaking of lawnmowers, my MIL got a new Cub Cadet last year that ran fine until she left it over winter with gas in the tank and then filled it up again with more old gas. It won't start now so I guess I'll have to take it to the repair shop. These new mowers just can't tolerate old gas. Not like the old gas mower we use on the front lawn. It is 28 years old and has a 31/2 h.p. Briggs engine. Just put it gas,old or new and it will start. I haven't changed the oil in over 15 years as the drain bolt is seized. It sure is noisy though.

YGW, was it you who was looking for a potato salad recipie? My wife makes a wonderful warm potato salad that has bacon in it and if you are interested I might be able to  get the recipie for you. It is good cold too.

We might get some rain tomorrow so I might actually get in a little train time. That underpass kit is still sitting on the workbench. I'll need to dress warm though as it sure is cool in the workshop. The furnace is in there and with the central air going non-stop I bet it isn't much over 65F. I did put away the passenger cars on the HO layout and I think I'll make up a CN freight next.

Today the Classic Trains DVD arrived so I'll have a lot of reading available if i get really lazy.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, why is Flo pouring a beer over Ken's head????  Oh, he needed to cool off.......  I'll just have a decaf and a slice of the strawberry rhubarb pie over there.  Oh, you can put a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream on it to.

Ken, this must be the year for lawn mower trouble.  My sister has a brand new one she got last year, and THAT has died on her.  She called the lawn service she had "ruin" her lawn while she was in Mexico to mow it untill she can get her brother to get it fixed for her......  Surprised?  Not me!  Well......  She doesn't have room in her car for it so she can't take it to a repair person, and it would be so nice if I could do THAT for her...  She hated the lawn service, BTW.  They didn't mow her lawn the way SHE does it....  and you could see right where they turned THAT big heavy ride on mower they used......  (If you get on your hands and knees and look real hard where she points you can almost see something....)

My new mower got a work out today.  Actually the guy behind the mower got the workout.  The mower cut the grass down to size with no trouble at all.  i did a bit more than half the lawn and had more battery left....  I was out of steam!  Went out to start painting the back of the shed (I was in the garden to do the painting) and i noticed something sitting right at the edge of my property and my neighbors lawn.  went over and found a Rodent Trap.  Great big one...  It had not one but 2 chipmunks dead.  One was inside and the other outside next to the trap.  They had been there a while I think, judging by the odor....  I got a garbage bag and disposed of them both.  Something had eaten the back end of one of them as well.  I need to go over and see one of my other neighbors who has an old cat that just loves nice tasty chipmunks...  Hopefully the trap didn't have poison in it.  Managed to get about 1/3 of the back wall of the shed done.  Also used about 1/3 of the gallon of paint I bought....  This is going to be an expensive project.  The shed is I think 8' x 14' and about 10' high.  The siding is a rough cut plywood siding that hasn't been painted since i bought the shed some dozen years ago.  I does need the paint!

I'm busy making some scratch built tools for the engine house.  Fabricated some Gandy Dancers Tolls, and a few spud bars.  I have also added some Oil Highboys and several 55 gal. Oil/Grease barrels.

Catch you all later!

 Hum, Flo another Beer Please!

Well the Back Yard is done and so is the Lawn Mower! It is a Toro and this is the second one in a year! First one got to the point it would not start after only 3 months. Had a heck of a fight to get home depot to replaces it under warranty!

This one was used one time last year then stored for the winter. This is the 6th time I used it this year and the Self Propelled drive just gave up the ghost!

Well I got to call Mon, it is her birthday today.

           Later, Ken

Dang it is hot out there!

Flo, bucket of ice water over my head please, and a Beer for the chaser.

Curt I wish I had only sent two engines back to BLI.

1 Class J first one spun the worm gear, it was replaced by LHS. Replacement side rod fell off the first time around the layout, found the nut and fixed it.

2 M1 A while it never been back, broke it center gear with in the first 2 days. I have replaced the center gear 3 times now. First one was dry as a bone, the other 2 just because it pull so well.

 3 PCM Big Boy.

A When I first got it the C clamp arm that held the tender would not slide on the metal rod that it clamped too. Had to take apart a brand new engine to repair.

B Ate a decoder so back it went to BLI it went. They said there was nothing wrong after 6 weeks. When I got it back I installed the Loksound 3.5 decoder and sounded great and ran well for around a year.

C It now shorts out going around left turns, it is on the RIP track again.

4 PCM Y6 b. It has been the best engine I have had so far!

A After a year I lost sound, so back it went to BLI. Lose chip, I could have fixed that.

B After 400 plus hours, it started shorting out turn left as well. ( It started have the problem way before the Big Boy) Sent it back to BLI and they could not fix the problem, so they offered me a credit? They had nothing I wanted and had them send it back and I fixed it. All so E Mailed them how to fix the problem, seems they have had 3 other ones they could not repair.

C Well after well over 600 hours now I cannot complain. But it is nosier than it should be. Guessing the gears are worn out in the front engine. While it still runs great it is on the RIP track again.

5 Monon Heavy Mike, very little run time because the sound sucks.

A Wheels came out of quarter so back to BLI.

B Current no power pick up from the tender.

6 UP GE AC 6000 will call it the A 6000 because I bought two at the same time. The A just about caught fire, all most all the wiring melted?  Ulrich Model Trains had me send it back and he could not repair it, so he sent me a CSX version. He was out of UP.

7 UP GE AC 6000 that I am calling the B engine. Ditch lights went out, went back to BLI. After I got back, front truck stopped picking up power so I sold it on the Yard Sale site to someone that was looking for a project.

8 CSX GE AC 6000 It ditch lights all so went bad, sent it back to BLI. It has now sucked up a rail spike I think into the speaker compartment I think. Sounds awful so it is on the RIP track as well.

What I fault BLI on is two fold.

1 The 6000's are just a plain pain in the caboose to take apart! Worst engine I have ever worked on.

2 Speakers facing downward will suck up rail spikes. To get to the speakers, you have to take the whole engine apart and I mean stripped to the bare chassis!

Now I have a few BLI's that I have never had to really repair. Some tweaking but that is part of the hobby.

1 2nd Class J (not counting the nut that backed off) was a sold engine. Sold it to a friend, then it spun the worm gear after 200 hours of run time, figures and he is no longer E Mails me.Sigh I did offer to fix it.

2 NYC Hudson. I have worn all the nickel off the drivers and never opened it as far as I can remember.

3 Santa Fe Alligator RSD 15. Sound is great and pulls well, not like the 6000's but still not bad.

Would I still recommend BLI, yes! There repair department makes up for there lack of Quality Control in China. While I have posted a long list of problems ( there where others ones like tender hardness that went bad ) they sent me most of the need parts at no cost to me. I would rather fix it my self than wait 6 weeks to get the repair done for free.

Well back to the Yard Wars.

Good afternoon.

Ulrich ... A German restaurant opened in Hopkinsville, and we went there for lunch. I had suerbraten, hot German potatoe salad, and German syle noodle. Dessert was apple streudel. Good stuff. Thought about you.

Where do we move the diner?

How about the Illinois Rairoad Museum in Union IL?

Simon .. I hope your son's surgery went well.

Packer: Got your package ready to go to PO tomorrow. Check PM's for details. Let me know today if there's a change in address.

I was busy this morning mowing my parents yard. Willow tree by the lake fell over due to the last storm and is laying on a patch of grass about 12x20 feet. Part of the tree is laying across a pampas grass hedge. My father says he's going to leave it there. Too much trouble to cut and move. Last one weighed about four tons and was a terror to move even after being cut up.

A live update from the day surgery unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital.   Andrew is just getting prepped for his operation.   There is a nice large G scale train track running around the main lobby and reception area, which as much appreciated by the boys.  Looks like we are going to be here for the next 4 hours or so.   Nothing too major, just a small op to help control an eye that drifts off.

Catch up later

Simon

Afternoon All,

At home today. My Son-in-law and I put in MOH's counter top in her sewing room today. It came out well and I just finished putting 2 coats of paint on the legs.

My daughter told my son she would lend him the money for his car. I'm happy it worked out, but kind of bummed too because parents should be able to help their kids out, but we just did not have it.

Simon- I hope your neck is better and things go well for your son.

Galaxy- I hope your tooth is getting better.

Ken- I have sent 2 locos back to BLI. They are reasonable and do good work.

Ulrich-Congrats on your new layout. I think that your previous acquaintance thought of you speaks to the quality of your character.

Stan- Beautiful Painting.

Everybody have a good day. See you at the next stop for the diner.

How about this place?

Well Urlich, I think we may have some problems if someone gets lost. For one thing, who here knows how to speak Japanese?

Well we sic'em on a chicken, sic'em on a chicken, sick'em on a chicken and watch those feathers fly.

Weather guesser was making lots of noise yesterday about rain coming here today. Not even a 10% chance of a minor shower! There's enough humidity here now anyway, so much so that the carb in my van was freezing up. Found the cause of the problem and fixed it, I hope. No freeze-ups since. I'll be in town tomorrow paying bills. See what it does then.

Ulrich Maybe you can make the Z scale layout a modeler layout as well.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have a couple Bavarian Creme doughnuts and a cup of dark roast coffee this morning.

Just popping in to say hi.  Have lots of stuff to get done today.  Most of it outside, and since today is a nice sunny day around here this would be a good day to get it done.

Ulrich, THAT is wonderful about getting the z scale layout.  I would definitely keep it!  I would say it will mean much more to you than it could to anyone else.... Smile, Wink & Grin

Hope you guys with the tooth problems get to feeling better very soon!

I spent some time taking a closer look at the layout. For a guy who is not into model railroading, he has done an excellent job. The track plan allows for quite a bit of operation, and there is a lot of attention to detail. In terms of scenery, it is far from being realistic, but that´s not an issue for me - I have my N scale desktop layout for that.

If I only had a place to store, other than the attic. I am afraid the layout will face damage up there.

Question

Garry - no microscope, no magnifying glasses Whistling Actually, I find N scale to be the limit for my eyes and hands.

Stan - that´s my favorite pic (at least for the moment Whistling

When I grow old and get rich, this is what´s on my wish list:

It´s a N scale model of a JNR class C62 Hudson from the late 1930´s, made by Tenshodo. Do I need to say more? Too many $$$$ for it Crying

Good Morning everyone!

It looks to be a nice hot day here in the southern tier.

I finally finished the Hudson painting, here it is:

While I was putting the final touches on it, the director of the rail museum called to tell me that the frames for these paintings had arrived at the museum. Talk about good timing! I'll post a shot of them on exhibit on Saturday.

Ulrich, What a great surprise! I know one guy who helps me on the museum's N scale layout who models in Z scale, I gotta show him what you got .  Also, let me see a pic of the loco you would like a painting of, I might want to take a shot at it just for the sake of trying.

Ken, good luck, and I nkow what you're dealing with. I've had a full upper plate since I was 17. Getting rid of the pain made it all worthwhile.

CNCharlie I often get a few hours a day to paint, I have a table set up on our front porch where I can relax and w**k on my paintings while keeping an eye on the kids. I will paint at the Rail Museum as well, but sometimes we just get way too much traffic there.

You guys and your wreck photos! I have one for you, I have to scan it first.  I don't think I've mentioned it here, but I was in a wicked derailment that ended my RR career back in 2004, We were going south out of Salamanca one night in a GP40 that hit ice on a crossing and decided to take an abrupt right turn over a bank. I ended up having discs blown out in my neck which have been repaired, and many minor herniations, plus a torn disc at L5. Thanks to the great work of my surgeon, I am able to still paint, and working with the Museum fills in my time. I don't like to dwell on my aches and pains, though. Once you see the wreck photo, that will be as far as I will go on the subject. Anyway, I'll post some wreck shots from our archive as well. Here's an oldie but goodie! This happened in 1952 just west of the East Salamanca yard when some hoppers filled with cinders rolled out onto the main, and came to a stop on a blind curve. Nobody was hurt.

Ok, I've got things to do today, so just a cup of coffee, Flo!

See ya tomorrow!

Good Morning!! Just Coffee please. Huh? Yes Dark Roast thank you. Not feeling peppy today. Not sick, just not peppy. I think I need a na….Potato salad contest!!!!!! I’m there! Todd’s loooove potato saladDinner.

Sunny, with a high near 89. Heat Advisory TEMPERATURE...WHILE AIR TEMPERATURES REACH THE MID 90S... DEWPOINTS WELL INTO THE 70S WILL RESULT IN HEAT INDEX VALUES IN EXCESS OF 105 DEGREES IN MANY AREAS.

Yesterday I replaced a sump pump at Mom’s house and rewired the stupid setup that has worked for almost 40 years, but just looks bad running an extension cord from the light in the ceiling to the sump pumpConfused. Plus, you can’t turn off the light. So, I ran a wire for a outlet box near the sump. Something that should have been done when the thing was put in. Why they didn’t…Huh? who knows. First time that light has been turned off since.....'76? '77?

Ulrich- Wow! But what to do with it. Hm… Sell it? Well if it’s like over here you might as well keep it for what you’d get. That’s the bad thing about it. You buy it for dollars and sell it for half cents.

Welp, soon as the dew burns off, I’m gonna mow our yard, then head out to Mom’s and mow hers. Or at least part. Gotta w**k tonight. Didn’t yesterday cause I thought I had gas in the tractor but apparently I was wrong. Tank was bone dry, and I mean bone dry, so now I wonder if it leaked out. No sign of it, other than the air filter smells real gassy. Needle could not be seating, or, just my imagination. I may have been running on the fuel bowl when I shut it off and was lucky it didn‘t run out of fuel. Either way I shall keep an eye open and shut the gas off at the tank when I leave next time.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

 Morning Folks

Flo, bowl of Frosted Flakes please and a Diet Dew.

Dang Ulrich You got trains coming out your Caboose! What was it 3 months ago and you had one narrow gauge engine and no track. Now you model in two scales! Big Smile I keep the Z scale, that is a impressive looking layout. Guess it was 4 years ago I was at a train show and they had a small Z scale layout set up, I was fascinated by it.

OK Simon, what did you do to wind up in the ER? What is wrong with Andrew eye?

Far as the Heavy Mike Tender I did clean the wipers and the axles. When I tested for power pick up I hooked the leads to the wipers and nothing. Tender wheels look like they are in the correct way, there is no short. I have ran it on the mining section, it just stalls when it hits the diamond. By the way, is yours sound and if so what series?

On the Motors I am going to take them to K-10 and see if I can get Dave to test them. I am thinking there is something wrong with my meter. As of now I have tested 4 of them and they are all showing bad readings, even the ones that tested good while you where here? I am all so getting the same strange readings from some Athearn Motors that all so tested good the other day.

Sound quality of mine is pretty bad, I sure James May's Flying Scotsman with Realistic Chuffing Sounds sounds better.

I will be calling BLI about the problem later today. After I tested the engine to confirm what the problem was it was 5:30 and they where closed.

Lots of yard work today. I just hope I get feeling better, every joint hurts this morning. Sigh I still remember getting to sleep on the Great Mattress.

Good Morning All,

62 and mostly sunny today - I'll have a regular to go please Zoe.   Nice gift Ulrich. Yeah i'd definitely keep it andat least try to find a place for it. If it simply won't fit anywhere then yes I'd sell it on and still be able to look my benefactor in the eye.

Did the museum night Tues but didn't get anything done on the layouts as we are in the initial stages of trying to re-erect the roundhouse on the old slab where it stood for decades until our former mayor had it razed (back when they were campaigning to close the entire line down and build condos in the yard - fat chance there can you imigine the excavation to clean the soil). Anyway we need to resurvey the site and get measurements to the edge of what we are leased and then go forward with plans and specifications for approval. In other news the mechanical dept has one of the 44 tonners up and running so progress is being made there as well. Got home last night and just went to sleep.

Good to see Sawyer (how many sylables is that pronounced with down south?) drop in. Sorry to hear about all the dental and chiropractic issues which I can sympathize with.

Back to the shop to get stuff done.   CUL,  J.R.

Ulrich, what a great gift.   Marklin Z scale products are wonderful things to behold.  Years ago I purchased a small Z scale setup because I was so impressed with the quality of what they do.  I think  that it is great that your former colleague remembered you with such a generous gift.
