Ken- have you thought about pouring gasoline on the ivy, throwing a match and then RUN!

I don't know, I ran all over town this morning. First to get gas and do some banking and a spark plug for my quad. Afternoon running included running to two different body shops for estimates. The first place, Collision Revision, wouldn't even talk to me until I found out the other guy's insurance rate for body repair were. The second place was Vega autobody. What a joke. The guy was a (Insert fitting expletive here) to me as soon as I walked in. All I wanted was a written estimate. Yeah right. (Mumble mumble Scottish accent mumble)

K-10 Model Trains  Went by and picked up some clump foliage for Ulrich  and now looking for a box to ship the items in. May have it sent off by this Saturday. Depending what Ulrich wants me to do.

GP 15-1 K-10 had one and I have been eyeballing them on Model Train and Stuff but not a road name I wanted. OH well only one he had so guess it was not meant to be.

I would advise against it. The smoke from burning poison ivy/oak/sumac can cause serious respiratory problems which can be fatal. I've seen it before and it's not pretty.

KEN- DON't BURN THE STUFF!!!! My Uncle and cousins made THAT mistake at my grandmothers!!! It will get in your eyes and throat and lungs and will ITCH JUST AS BAD INSIDE AS OUTSIDE!!!! Like Jeff says its NOT pretty. My grandmother owned a "farmette" with an orchard that was covered in teh stuff and have poison oak and sumac growing around too. WE used to get poison ivy just by mentioning goingo to grandmas house! It's a good think that was only once a year!

Use the "round up" weed killer and I would think covering it with BLACK {not clear} Plastic will help starve it of light and help to kill it off too. be sure to cover up and dispose of the coverings and the plastic later.

BTW I get poison ivy just by MENTIONING iT, so thanks a lot...now I will itch for the next 3 weeks. If you get infected see if you can find some Fells Naptha soap and lather it up and spread it over your PI. Leave it on {dont rinse off} It will help to "freeze it in place" so to speak and help keep from spreading. Hard NOT to scratch it I know...but Caladryl or Calamine lotion only works so much. SO does the Fells Naptha soap residue. You could take Benedryl to help fight it maybe but only works so far.

GOOD LUCK KEN!

Happy B-Day Happy B-Day Happy B-Day David!!! Another legal adult now, my my! Have an extra piece of  Cake for me and hope you get lots of Gift !!!! All trains related too!!!

Well I have to go grocery shopping tomorrow should be a real trick...maybe I can get the rolling electric carts and use that. AHve to cash in my coupons!!!

WE were gonna have a BBQ with friends this weekend but I will be "out of commision" with the injections into the nerves of my lumbar spine....Crying

Good Evening,

Jeff and all southern friends, say I guess that means everyone else in the Diner! Anyway how about sending some of that nice warm air you have down there up this way?  It was supposed to be 70F here today but only made it to 65F. After all, Johnboy and I send you nice cool air in the winter so it would just be neighbourly to send us some warm stuff in the summer. I think we've had 70 once this year and it was probably just for an hour.

Ulrich, seems like you are making a speedy recovery.  Modules look great by the way.

Ken, heed Jeff's advice on that poison ivy. It is nasty stuff and once you get it the next time it will be far worse. We have a friend who is allergic to it now and she can no longer eat mangoes. Apparently there is some chemical in mangoes that causes the same allergic reaction as poison ivy.

Haven't done much on the RR front lately as I've been spending a lot of time assisting in  the garden. It gives the name go-fer a whole new meaning. I did manage to get my door layout table done and now just have to put the foam on top to be ready to lay track. Hope to get that done this weekend. I have to decide on whether to use cork or WS trackbed so I am going to conduct my own comparative test. I want to be able to remove the track later with the least amount of problems.

Looks like we might get more thunderstorms tonight. We sure don't need anymore rain. There is still flooding here and now Lake Manitoba is so full quite a few  homes and cottages are being washed away. It is a fairly large lake, over 100 miles long and about 25 wide so the fetch is long when there is a northwest wind blowing causing very large waves.   While Manitoba is classified as a prairie province most of it is actually not prairie at all. If you look at a map you'll see that there are a lot of lakes and the land around the lakes is mostly rock covered by spruce trees.

Well, time for a coffee and perhaps a little TV. I could just go down and run trains for a little while, what to do, what to do?

I would advise against it. The smoke from burning poison ivy/oak/sumac can cause serious respiratory problems which can be fatal. I've seen it before and it's not pretty.

Good advise from Jeffrey!  A good many years ago I was doing a campfire for our 6th. grade Outdoor Ed. campout.  I found there was a fire lay already done (probably from the Fall before) in the firepit, so I just tidied it upo a bit and used it that night.  I had noticed several chunks of firewood had some vine on them, but didn't give it a thought.  Got a couple good deep breaths of the smoke while doing the MC routine for the show.  Two days later I couldn't talk more than a weak rasp.  A week later I was having trouble breathing and wen t to see the ENT Doc who was my allergist.  He took one look down my throat and asked if I had an inhaler.  I whispered no I don't have asthma....  He looked at me very seriously and said, You do now!"  I ended up with 2 different inhalers to use, one of which was a strong steroid to ease the inflamation and the other a plain asthma one.  He told me if I wasn't better in the morning I was to go to the hospital!  Serious stuff.  I had never had a reaction to poison Ivy before.

Don't!  I repeat Don't ever burn Poison Ivy!!!  Kill it with Round-up and either let the vines decompose, or dispose of it by burial!  Use gloves and long pants, long sleeve shirts.  Then wash the clothes in hot soapy water.  Take a shower after pulling it as well, just in case.  Getting the sap off the skin quickly is important.

All THAT said, we have some really nasty stuff around this area now far worse than Poison Ivy... http://www.health.state.ny.us/environmental/outdoors/hogweed/giant_hogweed.htm  It grows often by the side of the road.  People mowing lawns will get into it and do not know why they have nasty blisters on their skin.

Watched the Granddaughters for an hour this afternoon...  Grandpa and the girls had a lot of fun.  The oldest will be 4 in 2 weeks.  She is a real helper.  The little one loves to get in trouble...  I had to make her sit in "time out" for a few minutes after she wouldn't accept the word no from me...  Yes she knows the word....  They remind me a bit of Bill Cosby's routine about his daughters....Wink

Some MRR supplies came in today, so I am back at it down cellar.

Later!

Funny thing, well not funny if you are Andrew, but he had to go to the pediatritian today because he is covered in a rash that we thought was poison ivy.  Turns out he has Pityriasis rosea which looks awful but apparently isnt.

I'm also having a BBQ this weekend. I finished painting the upper portion of my layout today. I started the matte medium on tuesday, so it will be ready next week. Does anyone have some tips on doing ground cover?

See y'all in the mornin.

Oh, burning that bad huh, never mind then.

When you go to wash though, Use COLD water. Colder the better (to an extent) keeps skin pores closed while the oil from the ivy gets washed off. I learnt that trick from my grandpa. Don't think I get a reaction from the stuff and I ain't keen to find out.

Good evening Gang,

Chloe, I'll have a southern Sasparilla and a plate of home fries. Thanks much.

Ran a few trains last night, " pure pleasure".   Sure love the new staging tracks in the storage room.  Really nice to have several trains made up and change them out quickly.

CN. Charlie,  I don't believe we have made it out of the sixties yet here in Riderville this year. We are still waiting for some warm weather, although 300 miles north of us they have been warmer than us for weeks.    keep the rubber boots close by as it is raining here now and there are worse storms going through south eastern Saskatchewan and coming your way.

Galaxy,  I really hope you have a good restful night and that the back surprises you over the next few days and not give you the trouble you expect.  "Power of Positive Thinking"  Try it........

Ulrich,  It is great to see you getting back in the groove.  You did a great job on that module. Impressive. But now having said that, be sure to take enough time for your recuperation.  Make sure there is enough rest in your day.

Boy, that is sure scary stuff you guys are talking about. Poison Ivy and that other one Ray mentioned.  Sure don't want to encounter any of that stuff.  I guess I have been lucky through my 70 years that I have not been in contact with it even though we do lots of camping and in earlier years lots of canoeing.

Well I won't take up anymore space this evening.   Great to see those MIAs showing up, you guys were always in our thoughts.

Have a great night Gang.

Giant Hogweed....does that scare anyone?

It should...

By forming dense stands they can displace native plants and reduce wildlife interests.[1] It has also spread in the northeastern and northwestern United States and central and eastern Canada.

KEN!!!! STOP WAIT!!! DON’T BURN THE POISON IVY!!!!!! I deal with the stuff all the time. Like Jeff said, stay away and Round up the bejeezus out of it. It will dye then you can rip it out and just throw iyt away with the other yard waste. UNLESS your Village or town burns. If so, well I don't klnow. It will just rot away like any other weed thoughafter you kill it.  I am not allergic to it myself so I wouldn’t know to what level you have to protect yourself. I just wade through it and then think, "whoops I'll have to wash this myself cause Brenda can't touch it." I have been known to plow through it with a weed eater. Not the wisest thing to do but I wasn't paying attention. No problem for me, but my clothes and the weedeater were covered in it. Whoops. Oh whew! I see you already got that one. That would/could have been naaaaasty. Welll gee whiz, if I'd have read farther I could have just said I agree.Laugh

Ulrich- Looooking Gooood! Is the sun up over there or is it your smile that is so bright.

Happy B-Day Trainmaster! Jeff’s neighbor huh? Well, good luck findig his home. He’s pretty well tucked in the woods it looks like.

Jeff- I never thought of construction paper for carpet. Great idea. Color and texture. I will do that myself. Too late for my trailer like the one you showed, but the others are still able to be done. Other structures too. Thanks for the tipThumbs Up.

Curt- Sorry, I’m chuckling with you not at you. Welcome to the world of tiny electronics.

Home sorta early from w**k so I think I’ll take a peek in the train room and see what I could be doing if I had the time. Ulrich’s progress really put the wantin’s to me. But, it’s close to sack time and I have a full day tomorrow and Saturdy, and Sunday, and….

Evening All,

I received notice that the stuff I ordered from Scenic Express today is already on it's way, I'm very impressed. I should receive it Monday. I ordered concrete bumpers (PRR style) and a industrial back drop in 4 pieces (12 ft long).

Todd- You are right. I just needed some time to gain some perspective. I will hopefully fix them tomorrow. I got 2 more DPDT's from RS on the way to my meeting tonight.

North East- I live on the west side of Orlando south of Lake Apopka.

Well I am tired so it is off to bed for me.

Evening all.  Just stopping by for a RBF before bed.  This weekend is my school's 10 year anniversary, so I think that Amy and I will make an appearance.  Not a whole lot happening, just trying to work my way through some MRR "gruntwork" (deciding on crews, stuff like that).  Other than that I've been doing the w*rk thing and spending time outside with the girls and the dog.

Thanks to everyone for the welcome backs, the closest tornado to our house was about 70 miles north, so I we were fairly well out of the woods.  So far its been extremely dry, severe drought conditions down here, so we could really use some rain.

Welp, that's about it for me, love the pictures y'all.

Later Taters!

Good Morning Folks,

thanks for all the kudos for my first module - it adds a lot of "color" to my oval of track and gives a taste of what the layout will look like. It also puts a smile on my face.

The doc´s appointment did not go too well. Though the surgery went fine and the heart is now pumping the amount of blood through my body it is supposed to, the old ticker has retained its arrhythmia, which seems to be really bad at night. Maybe that´s the reason why I can´t sleep well. We try to battle this with a tray load of medications - see how that will work. The doc told me to take it easy all the time and to go really slow - putting me into a dilemma. My Dad called yesterday and asked me to come and take them home on the 11th, stay for the weekend to take of a load from my mother´s shoulders. Now I did not tell them about my own surgery, not to add to their worries, but I really shouldn´t be going there. What to do?

On the way home I stopped at our home improvement place and bought a few pieces of plywood, which I need to start out on the next module. Spent a horrifying $ 2 on that! Maybe I can get those cut and contoured properly at a friend´s place - Petra has just washed the floor and will not like me to mess it up again Whistling

Zoe, just a cup of coffee - too late for a breakfast, too early for lunch!

David - a belated Happy B-Day!

Bama - good to hear that you and your family were not effected by the tornadoes!

Have a great day!

I'll TELL YOU what "to do". TELL THEM about your situation!!!! You CANNOT RISK another heart-somehting-or-other because you "don't want to add to their worries"!!!! YOur surgery is OVER, so NOW you can tell them, and you ALSO need to tell them that you CANNOT do "heavy stuff" or "active stuff" right now unless they want a dead son on their hands!!!

GOod Morning Everyone!

I have been trying to get rid of some regular ivy in my yard. I have been trying to use a hoe to get it out. Unfortunately, we have planted some plants in the general area, so I can't nuke it with round-up or "burn it". Any suggestions?

Good morning, DIners. ...... I'll have oatmeal and OJ, please.

Ulrich, I too, think you should tell the parents about the situation. The arrhythmia needs to be controlled, and therefore, you need to continue seeing the doctor. I bet the arrhythmia can be controlled. Forgive me for using my situation as an example. As some of the diners know, my heart condition nearly killed me in 2008. The heart quit beating six times, and I had a ride in a helicopter to the hospital in Nashville, TN. My implanted device re-started the heart each time.  The good news is doctors have changed my medications, and the rhythm has been under control since then. I am certainly thankful for today's modern medical science.

Ulrich .... I liked your post in Weekend Photo Fun.

David P .... Happy Birthday. I hope your move back to Sundown, LA goes well. Perhaps, Jeff will arrange a marching band to welcome you.

I just posted a photo in WPF, too.

Thanks to all of you who commented on my steel mill pictures yesterday. Regarding the question about ballast, its is just Woodland Scenics ballast. Sometimes, I blend more than one color to get the deired effect.

Where's JimCG? He was here posting pictures of some nice buildings he was working on. I wonder if he completed them.

While clearing out around the shed I can a cross something that seemed half vine and half tree. On thing that sticks out was the vine part had what look like roots come out from the vine part. I will have to look at the link again but I read about a type of Poison Thingy that did that.

Far as burning, from the very get go I said I would not do that. Boy, sounds like I am dealing with nuclear waste! I will spray it the next time and in the yard, and spray it every week till it is dead. Then uses a stiff rake to gather it up, buy a long sleeve shirt from good will, gloves and use duck tape to seal them. Put the wast in a trash bag, followed by the shirt and gloves. Take a cold shower and throw the bag into a dumpster at work.

Well, back to work here in a little bit.

 See you all tonight!

YEAH!!! It's FRIDAY!!!!!   Good morning!....not much happening in this neck of the woods except the heat and dry. It was already hot this morning on the drive to work and still not a drop of rain. The yard is brown in the places the sprinkler system doesn't reach.

Happy B- Day David!!

Ulrich, please tell your parents about your condition. they will really be worried if you are no longer with them....I just lost 2 train buddies recently because they knew they both had cancer and didn't do anything about it nor failed to mention it to our circle of friends. You know what? It hasn't been a year yet and i miss them terribly.....chuck

Good morning. It's 77° and sunny. The high will be 94° and it will be partly cloudy. There's a small chance (20%) for rain this morning.

I won't be on again until sometime this afternoon. I have an appointment with the foot doc this morning then I'll be heading to Wal-Mart to get some grocery shopping down. Does anybody know where I can get some HO Scale mobile home furniture? Cabinets?

Good Morning,

Going to be hot and dry again today. I think I  wll BBQ pork steaks tonight for supper, and use some John Boy and Billy grilling sauce. Yum, Yum.

The only plans today is to replace the 2 problem DPDT's and install the final 10. Then on to the Tortoises.

I have a general electrical question for those in the know. If I use 2 terminal strips per set of leads to the Tortoise will that work or will it degrade the amount of power going to the Tortoise? I have a 4 ft pig tail on the DPDT's and I plan on doing the same on the Tortoise end, so there would be a terminal strip on each end. Please let me know.

Galaxy- I hope your pain continues to go away.

Ulrich- I agree with the others. You must take care of yourself, which means you have to recuperate and not kill yourself helping your Mom and Dad. Also I think you should let your parents know what happened so they understand. Just  my opinion for what it is worth.

Plywood for $2? I need to move to Germany.

Barry- I am in the same situation as you when it comes to lighting. But it is down on my list of priorities right now.

Well everyone take care.

I have 58 tortoise machines on one old MRC power pack and I also use terminal strips. No problems to report.  I like terminal strips because they keep wire landings neat and orderly....chuck

Ulrich

Want to upset your parents and cause them stress.  Well don't tell them what is going on and see how they feel when they inevitably find out later.   Then they will worry about all the things that you are not telling them, creating things in their mind to worry about.

BTW, the module looks really good.  There is a lot to be said for small layouts because you can really give each small section a great deal of attention.  A level of attention that is very hard to achieve on a basement empire.
