Good morning .....

I'll have cereal with fresh blueberries, please.

SFB .... You asked if I had pictures of my steel mill. Here you are. Mine is based on the Walthers kits, but I modified as appropriate. The coke oven is at a separate location. Other buildings are grouped together.

My layout has a Burlington Route theme, and the old CB&Q did haul iron ore from the Great Northern in MN to the steel mill in Granite City, IL. My steel mill employs Baldwin switchers which the company purchased second hand from GN and SP. They are Athearn models with DCC added.

Simon: Do you have...or does anyone else have photos of the mine buildings around there? One older fellow up here-who has no internet/nor computer-is looking for any old photos of mines around your area..I have printer I can print them out for him....

Do you have any others of this one?

Patrick ... Welcome. Feel free to tell us about yourself or your model railroad if you wish.

Simon .... I like your mine. Very good!

Galaxy ... Best wishes regarding MRI, etc.

Todd .... The Branchline kits are fun. They are time-cosnuming because they have tiny little parts to avoid breaking. Enjoy it.

Barry .... What were those pictures?

Ulrich .... Sounds like a great wake up call

Thanks for the cup of joe TM. The boss walked in and I had to cut the post short. Anyway, I'm sort of at a crossroads right now. I figure that in 1 1/2 years my HO 23' x 25' layout should be considered completed minus some detail work here and there. I'm getting dangerously close to retirement ( no more than 8 more years,) and feel that i've outgrown the layout. I'm considering the thought of building a 30' x 60' steel building and to starting a new layout from scratch.  To tell you the truth, i really don't know if i have another layout in me. It took me 8 years work for the current layout to be near completion and my body just doesn't bend and twist the way it used to.  The problem is  that i know i'll go crazy if i don't have any modeling to do in my retirement  years, but the thought of building another layout especially the size I want, seems to be an overwelming task, not to mention my pension will be nothing compared to what I make today to finance a new layout.

Is anyone in this same predictament...chuck

 Morning Folks.

Flo, did I read Jeffery is buying? Dinner I take a bowl of Frosted Flakes and a Diet Dew please.

Well got the front yard cut before we get the rain, new record for me. Had it done by 8:30 AM, I normally put it off to evening.

Packer you confused me about the pictures.

Simon You still in town? If so, good for you, you spend way to much time away from home. Far as mines, from what I understand our area is laced with mines. I had to get Mine Insurances for the house when I bought it in case it went down a sink hole.

How far do you ride Simon? I do have that 18 speed bike that is on the front porch. For a while I was riding 3 miles a day, that had to be a heck of a sight. My big Butt on that skinny bike! Big Smile

Guitar Wars I won! Big Smile The threat of me spending $ for my own guitar made my wife give in. ( I would not have spent the money but she did not know that ). So it looks like Shaun and I will be busy Saturday with customers, they only seem to come in when there something you want to do.

Time for my quarterly hair cut. Grumpy Sue cuts my hair, and while she does a very good job, it takes her 3 times longer than if I have a pro do it. I think she plays with it more than actually cutting it.

Well the Barber is calling my number, got to go and get sheared.

You asked for it.  Apologies to others that find old coal mines boring!

This is what is left of mine #15 Consolidated Coal Company, Mount Olive, Illinois.  Actually situated in the small village of White City.  This main structure is the power station for the coal mine.  It is  not clear to me, what if any of the other structures are actually from the mine since the power station building has been used for other business since.

Here are some old images that I have found which I believe to all be of the mine back in the day.  My wife remembers them demolishing the smoke stack back around 1970.

Good Afternoon Gang,

it´s been a busy day today, but the time went by in "no time" at all. I did achieve what I intended to - my first module is (nearly) complete, only the water is still missing.

A pictures tells more than a thousands words, so here are some:

This was the starting point in the morning:

And this is the way it now looks:

I am quite happy with the result.

I need to work on my lighting, though, to get better pictures.

Zoe, the drinks are on me tonight! I´ll go for some Beer, please.

I used quick drying white glue the first time - it works nicely. It even cut down on the drying time of the ballast, which is rock hard after only a few hours - usually takes about 12 hrs. to dry.

Building these modules is a lot of fun!

Ken - I hope you enjoy to see the contents of your mail box put to good use. Without your generous gift, I wouldn´t be anywhere near this stage! Thanks, buddy!

Greets all!  Hope no one minds if I take a seat and have a quick snack before heading back to work.  I like what ya'll've done with the diner!

Ulrich, very nice module!  I might be coming into a project half way, but is this module part of something bigger?

Ulrich, very nice module!  I might be coming into a project half way, but is this module part of something bigger?

Dave - yes it is! It is part of a modular desk-top layout of Japanese prototype. The design is loosely based on T-Trak standards. The layout will eventually look like this:

Not really a fancy one, but the only way for me to stay in the hobby - lack of space and lack of funds keep me from building my "dream" layout.  It is a lot more fun than I thought it to be! The modules will be stored on a shelf above my desk, when the layout is not in use. Assembly/disassembly takes only a few minutes. Keeps me out of trouble... Whistling

 Quick break.

Flo, another Diet Dew if you pleases.Yep I am wired, have had 3 litters of the stuff today.

Well spent another hour cutting stuff down and slowly but surely I am putting a dent in the mess.  Next is the hard part, dragging the stuff around front for pick up. If I have a couple of more days like today I will make it behind the in ground pool. Then I will be fighting Poison Ivy.Grumpy

Poison Ivy Any tips on how to fight this stuff? It is growing as ground cover on the concert deck around the rear of the pool. I have thought of using plastic bags as boots and using the lawn mower on the mulch setting. Then spay the heck out of it using Round Up. What do you think? Will I itch my self to death?

When I am done dragging the stuff out, off to K 10 Model Trains! Big Smile

Don't take the mower to it! Every piece of the vine that hits the ground can take root and make a new plant. Spray RoundUp on it as it is and soak the leaves good.

Afternoon guys

Filled up the car today. The gas station of choice hasn't had a price increase in a while. I got 21.6 mpg, which IMO is pretty good for a 3400 lbs V8 car running off regular, and still having some "fun". Might try premium because it helped with the regular 10% ethanol gas.

I re-opened that thumb thearlier in the week. I've tried letting it air out some, but every time I take the bandages off to air out, it winds up opening back up. Duno what's up with that.

On those con-cor / herpa mustangs I was messing with, I manged to get 2 good ones again. I cut and splced the damaged one and the crazed plastic one. So I have 2 again, once silver and one blue (as opposed to all green)

Ken, The "jungle" contains poison ivy, eh? I'd say get or make a flamethrower (a can of brake cleaner with a straw and a lighter or match works) and don the Rambo stuff. Laugh. Never dealt with the stuff, but I'd say cover up and you should be okay.

Ulrich, you work fast. Looks good!

Garry, Like the steel mill

Lee, What would be the best way to cast one of these herpa mustangs? They are multi-part cars and I may be getting 3 more.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

OK Jeffery will nuke the stuff with Round Up, I have the heavy duty stuff that I add water to and a sprayer. After the Ivy dies, how long does it take after it is dead to where I can handle it, if ever?

Packer, Hum Flame Thrower (said like Homer Simpson ) I like! Big Smile But not practical and I have heard breathing the smoke or having it touch you of Poison Ivy can make you break out as well.

Off to K-10 Model Trains, see you folks for dinner.

Unfortunately the urushiol (stuff that makes you itch) stays active for a very long time. After it's dead put on a heavy pair of pants and a long sleeve shirt you can afford to throw away. Have heavy gloves also so you don't get any of the stuff on you.

Afternoon All,

Well I got 14 DPDT's installed and powered today with 12 of them working.Grumpy One that was not working had a broken solder so I went to pull it of the control panel and promptly broke the toggle switch and the second one I have no clue what is wrong, it will throw in one direction-sometimes, it will do nothing sometimes, it will make a noise sometimes (The Tortoise) but not move. I have checked the power connection several times and I have checked the back of the DPDT several times and everything appears OK. It worked a couple of days ago when I soldered all the leads onto the DPDT. At this point I think I will just buy 2 new switches and go from there. I am extremely frustrated at this point.Angry

Ulrich- Nice looking moduleBig Smile

Trainmaster-Happy Birthday. I had no clue you lived in my general area. Have a safe move.

I have a train club meeting tonight so I will talk to you later.
