Me again!
Kept it down to a slow day today, just a little bit of tinkering around with some templates to cut the foam for my second module.
Folks, I really appreciate your advice. I will wait and see how things turn out by the beginning of next week, before I make up my mind on that issue. Being well into their eighties, both my parents have developed a certain stubbornness towards third party help, which will result in my mother totally overworking herself within a few days . I´d feel much more comfortable to help out at least for a few days, as there is no one else around to do that. My PITA brother lives 350 miles away and has used this argument for the last ten years. Seems as if the buck stops at my side again -
Flo, just a pre-supper snack for me, please. A hot dog? sound fine, and a to go with it.
Curt - those two $ go for 1 piece of 4" by 12" ply, 1 piece of 4" by 5" and 1 piece of 4" by 4". Not that cheap anymore .... But it was cut to spec, all corners fair and square!
Ken - the doc put me on 5 new meds, two of them make me really drowsy. I hope this settles my sleep issue as well.

Well I managed to get some grocery shopping done. Was a bit of a PAIN, but I got it done. Saved $45.00 in coupons and "AdvantEDGE" discounts at the Chopper Shopper. also got $0.20 cents off a gal of gas up to 20 gals. I will wait till next week maybe I have 40 cents off and then I fill up. At a half a tank now.
I have to go back sometime in our running around tomorrow cuz the register gave me another $2.50 OFF coupon at the register for ANY laundry detergent. THere is a lesser known brand on sale for 2/$5.00 or $2.50 for one. Net cost to me then??? $0.00!!!! cant beat free!!! AS it was I got 2 bottles of ALL Free and Clear today for just $1.40 each with sale and coupons off!!
I love love love deals like free or pennies on the dollar! who wouldn't?
I used to use only coupons and what was on sale to buy groceries but got out of the habbit as MOH is nto so interested in DOING the work of cutting, sorting and pulling coupons together. But I have gotten back into it as I want us to be able to afford the house once we buy it. ANd saving lots of money is what Its all about! I am NOT The fanatic that the Extreme Couponing TV show people are...I see no reason to load up on 50 bottles of antacid when one does nto suffer from heartburn just cuz they are in sale and have coupons for them! ALthough...now that I think about it, we now have 4 botttles of laundry detergent and I want to pick up a free one tomorrrow again....that will make 5...maybe I need more storage space besides the top of the dryer?
I don't go dumpster diving for more coupons eitehr...most convenient stores around here have their dumpsters under lock and key anyway.
Was almost downright cold yesterday with the wind blowing hard. TOday no wind so the sun is warming it up alright!!!
Well I should go put away the 20 rolls of toilet paper I got @ 40 cents a roll...not bad considering it is regularly 69 cents a roll!

Curt, using the terminal strips will not lower the power at all. They have better conductivity than the wire itself. The important thing is that all connections are solid. THAT is why I use spade lugs, crimped, and then soldered. never have any problems.
Ulrich..... What everyone else said!
Oh look Galaxy! Barry has been out house hunting for you.... I think it may need a little fixing up here and there, but for the price........
I have a busy day of "getting ready for" going on. My sister the "Arteeest" has her Art Opening tonight at "2chic Boutique" in the big city North of me. (Does THAT sound Hoity Toity?). I have to get my hair cut, get some pocket change from the Credit Union, Iron some "Sunday Go To Meeting" clothes, and practice being on my best behavior (so I won't embarrass her).
Best get moving!

Timber company is behind our house now, so I caught the feller buncher opperator and asked if he could take the big trees down on our property. He'll take a look. Would sure make my job easier.

Thanks Flo, a Diet Doc will work great.
Well, (Deep subject) I got off the phone with the jerk who rear ended me. About 10 minutes of yelling by me and my dad we didn't get a cent out of the (Insert crude phrase here). Called his insurance company, Oh boy, a barrel of fun, more yelling, this time exclusively by yours truly. Found out he doesn't have insurance until next month. The guy I talked to kept telling me that he couldn't give information out about the driver in question. I yelled at him (Only way I could get it in his head) that I didn't want information, what I wanted was a check or them to send out their own adjuster to get this (Insert expletive here) straightened out. They hung up on me. My dad's going to call the Joliet police department (it happened right in front of Joliet Central where I go to school) and file a complaint. My sisters can vouch for how loudly I yelled. Hey, how'd I get up here?

Afternoon All,
Getting ready to do some BBQ'ing for supper. Spent most the day working on the layout. Finally have 26 DPDT switches installed, powered and tested using a Tortoise. I have learned some truths from this:
1. Be gentle and patient.
2. Make sure that you are testing what you think you are testing
3. If you think you need 4 inches of wire you probably need 6-8 inches.
4. Test each item more than once.
5. Take a minute and think out the problem before acting.
6. Be gentle and patient.
Chuck and Ray- Thanks for the info. That is the way I will go.
Jeff- I hope at the very least that your foot has not worsened, and hopefully improved.

The Red and Black wire provides power to the Control Panel and the Blue or Green wires provides power to the Tortoise. Installiing the Tortoises is my next project.

Yeah, call them up and let them talk to Darth Vader.
That would be fun. What I was looking for was a modulator to make my voice sound like a character from an anime called Bleach
Oh yeah, problem's solved. No sooner than I went to another page after posting here, the guy called me and wanted to meet me somewhere and he gave me 400 USD So now problem's solved.
Curt, a fine looking rats nest you are building there!! Seriously that is no small task you are undertaking. I just received a Tam Valley servo and servo controller in the mail. I got it to experiment with switching for my recently installed lower deck storage tracks. I am looking forward to seeing how it performs with Peco turnouts.

My insurance would of probably had worse luck than me. What I think did it was I called his insurance company and then they called him after they hung up on me.

Don't worry guys, when I told you I got the money was after I dealt with him in person. My dad was with me and I had him meet me on MY terms. Public area, police station one block away, and my sisters waiting to call 911 if anything went wrong from home. I'm not dead yet.
Good evening Diners: I see Garry's paying, so I'll just have the lobster for a night cap! Had a weird moment in the big storm the other night (the one that brought tornadoes close to Dick (Greyfox) BTW) 4:45 am our door bell starts ringing. Go down and see that there's no-one there! Non-corporeal visitation? Nope, the driving rain all night had finally got inside the wireless bell push and shorted the battery into an "On" switch! Quite the storm that one - lightning continuously as cell after cell made its way across the country.
Ulrich: My on your telling your parents lines up with what everyone else is saying. I know your parents don't take well to 3rd party help, but if you take a turn for the worse, they will face that as a permanent situation. Really like your module I took the liberty of turning up the light a bit

The Great Britain II Railtour on April 11th saw 61994 The Great Marquess hauling a seven coach leg to the Kyle of Lochalsh from Inverness. On what was a good day of filming, we see the K4 in trouble on the climb from Fodderty Junction to Ravens Rock, and also skirting Loch Carron and few mile out of the Kyle.

Flo, just a decaf for me..
Been a long day here. Got my hair cut. Actually while he was doing it, I had him cut them all..... Did some banking. Needed some pictures of dead presidents in my wallet, so I got a Hamilton, a couple Jackson's and two Abes... Should do me for cash for the month of June I hope. Decided as Long as I was going to Rochester anyway, I should see if the Black and Decker repair place in Rochester might have the part I am waiting for. They did so i stopped in on my way to the Hoitsy Toitsy Art opening... For some reason my GPS then sent me to what was the right address, but in a completely wrong place..... Yep! Their are two Park Aves. in Rochester NY! After finding the wrong one and wondering why the GPS was sending me in the opposite direction of where I knew the store was.... I unplugged it, put it away and headed back to where I knew where I was and found it oln my own. I was only 15 minutes late by THAT time... Actually the opening was very enjoyable. Saw several people I knew, and my sister was very happy several of her neighbors came to it and a gentleman she knew from her teaching days that she hadn't seen in about 30 years. He read about it a few weeks back in the Rochester paper....
I get home and try to once again navigate the Black and Decker website. Finally found a way to get to the Black and Decker page instead of the all other brands they make page! From their I decide to check out the page that has Black and Decker Recalls.... Hmmmm. My mower is listed as one model that has been recalled for an electrical overheating issue....... I know I registered the mower when I bought it. Have no idea why I haven't got a recall notice in the mail? I will call the number and have a chat with them on Monday!
Have a great night out there!
Evening guys
Did some MRRing tonight. Put together an ITC (Illinois Terminal) Athearn BB PS 5344 kit. These aren't a "shake the box kit" like the rest of the blue box line. They have seperate grabs, ladders, stirrups, etc. I have an MNS one that I never did finsih because the ladders busted. I think my modeling skills have inproved since then, and I had no issues this time.
David, A belated Happy Birthday.
Ray, I had a similar adventure with my GPS. I went with my father to Miami (remember, I'm between Panama City and Pensacola) for an 8 hour drive to pick up a car. Not just any car, though. It was a tan 1986 Ford LTD station wagon (yeah, really). We were driving on the interstate on the way home when the catalytic converters on the LTD clogged up (I asked my father to get a sawz-all and cut them out). Parked the wagon in a safe location (across from a police station) and used the GPS to try to find a place to get a trailer to pull the LTD with the expedition. It took us to a hardware store, and a few other places. So we tried the old way, went into a few gas stations to ask for directions. 5 hours of running around later we finally got the trailer. Now the LTD sits waiting for it's 418 to be installed.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Poison Ivy Arms Well they still are not itching much, but starting to look pretty nasty. I foresee them blistering in a day or 2.
Automatic Transmission Fluid. I just read the article in May issues magazine (yes I have to wait for the hand me down copy) I am thinking about trying it.
Turtle Switch Things. OK, could not figure how to spell the proper term. Anyway, I am thinking about adding a like up to K-10 Mining from the rear.
So far I can only go up from the front (picture above) and then it dead ends.
I want to be able to get up from this way.
Last picture was before I covered the inner workings. To make the grade 2% I will need to have the turnout for the grade some where around after the portal on the hill to the far left in the last picture.
Curt I think you are doing this and all are welcome to answer. OK, I will need the Turtle thing and a decoder I believe so I can use it with the Digitrax SEB. What kind of decoder do I need? Does the turtle thing need a power supply? Track is mounted on thin outdoor carpet and 1/2 inch plywood so I won't have to mess with foam cover like I have on the mining section.
All so, how to you tell which way the turnout is thrown? I will not be able to see it buried in the mountain.
Well hope you all are doing fine and looking forward to advices.
Team Steam Good job, and might have picked up some pocket change as well with Dad being in the business. Did he bend the rebar or just mess up the cover?
Ken
I hate Rust
cudaken Poison Ivy Arms Well they still are not itching much, but starting to look pretty nasty. I foresee them blistering in a day or 2.
Ken- I have a small incline area that is at 1.5% grade with turnouts at both ends before the incline starts. I decided to go with manual control off a panel instead of by DCC because I was afraid that I would be overwhelmed by running a train and trying to control turnouts on the throttle at the same time. Since I have 26 turnouts I don't think I could stay on top of it. I also have more of a oval track plan than yours appears to be and the back half is hidden from sight by structures. Hope this helped.
cudaken Curt I think you are doing this and all are welcome to answer. OK, I will need the Turtle thing and a decoder I believe so I can use it with the Digitrax SEB. What kind of decoder do I need? Ken, I'll jump in here.Just because you can do something a particular way does not mean that it is the best way to do it. Recently I helped a friend install a couple Torti with decoders on his layout. The tortis went in easily and he tried them out. He is using NCE, but it is basically the same. He had to locate the number of the turnout (after it was programed), then push the key on the throttle for turnout control, then type in the turnout number, then yes or no...... I guess that yes throws the turnout one way and no the other. Then he has to push another key to go back to controlling the train.... At that moment I realized all I have to do is reach out and throw the toggle switch for that turnout up or down depending whether I want the mainline or the siding.... So lets see that again... He has to 1. find out what the turnout number is, 2. hit the key for turnout control, 3. type the turnout number into the throttle, 4. choose which way the turnout needs to be thrown, and 5. push another key to get back to the train.... I reach out and go, CLICK!
I guess the his way is much better because it is more expensive, and involves computer technology........ And how much cooler to have the turnout being operated by the throttle!!!! WOW!
For me I use the technology when and if there is a valid reason for it. I won't be using decoder operated turnout control soon..... Do what you want, it is your layout. As for me I use what I saved to buy more scratchbuilding supplies!
Curt and Ray Reason I want to throw the turnout with the SEB is five fold.
1 Turn out will be under the hill in the left hand side, I would have to lift the hill that is 8 foot long to throw the turnout.
2 Where I would need the turnout is 20 feet away from where I sit. To be honest, to lazy to get up and throw the turnout.
3 Not crazy about running 30 feet of wire to where I sit.
4 Here snap switch motors burn up easily.
5 My DCC system does not have a AC power outlet as far as I know.
Will the turtle thing work with AC power and no decoder? Far as turnouts, I have around 60 and all are hand thrown. Yes it is simple, but one of the reasons I hardly uses them. Have to get up and thrown them and then sit back down and run the trains.
If you look closely you can see the yard that goes to the car house / engine house in this picture.
See the open door, that is where I sit. Tonight I was looking at the yard, there is something like 9 Peco turnout in the yard. I have not used them in a year? Heck the mining yard has a 3 way turnout that cost me $50.00 3 years ago, never used. Have to start some where, so maybe this is the time.
One of these days, I like to program the computer to run the layout where I can sit back and just watch. Simon as showed me a little about using the computer as a throttle by using the Digitrax PR 3 with the Loco Net and JMRI.
Good Morning Gang,
it is a bright and sunny morning in northern Germany and I feel relaxed after a good night´s sleep. The first in time in many moons!
Chloe, coffee and a bowl of cereal, please!
John - I have been tinkering around with the contrast and the brightness of that picture, but all I learned is that I need to work on my lighting. I don´t have a photo lamp to "enlighten" my pictures, and the software I use is very limited. So just think of the "fog" being mist rolling in from the sea ...
Ken - check your conversation. I hope, today will be a better for you!
Today will see a little more MR activity. I am going to see a friend in the afternoon, and we will start w*rk on the second module. Just a cut & fit job to complete the "benchwork" of this module. His wife never enters his room, so we can mess it up properly ...
Have a good one!

Good Morning!
The matte medium will be ready next week. Does anyone have tips for doing ground cover?
I have run into a problem with my roundhouse 4-4-0 w/ sound. I just sent it in because of a bad decoder, but now I can't program CVs!!!! My hobbyshop was able to program the address, but I have not tried.
You all use turtles? I just went with the atlas switches with the remote controlled machines. They work just fine for me.
BBQ is tonight. See you all later.
