Barry ... Your photo shows you located the equipment needed to clean up all of the wrappers for Barry-sized-burgers. ........ Also, you recently posted a picture of a diner. Did it have anybody sleeping on a booth? I think Duke found another diner because we can't awaken him here.

Ulrich ... Tunnel pictures look good. I can see the ligh at the end of the tunnel with one.

It's hot here.

Hello all,

a root beer float, please. Mug's please.

Turns out what I saw yesderday was the exhibit train. They are probably storing it there this week before they ship it to Harrisburg for the weekend. I might see it there or in Strasburg one of the two weekends after.

Ulrich: Excelent work! Mind flying here to help meBig Smile?

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooood afternoon, bucket of ice water please...

Here's a little something I've been fiddling with lately.

Out of the box:

After several treatments of Mountain Modelcraft Weathering Wash ("faded paint" and "grimyblack"):

ULRICH: WOW! Bow

RAY: I think those scores you mentioned is why the "mercy rule" came about! If the losing team (in game one) had who I think they had pitching...well (full, for now, very refreshing), she was an eighth grader. The turbocharged diesel throwing in game two? a junior. What a difference a pitcher makes!

ooooops .... Whistling ........ Hello, Duke.... What awakened you? .... Good to see you. Nice picture. Smile

I'll have dinner now. Chef salad, please.

Evening All,

Not much going here. I put together three very small Tichy kits (2 Telltales, a Mail Crane, and a Water Column). I will paint them Thursday when I paint my Cornerstone diesel servicing facility. I received my order from Scenic Express and was not happy. The back drops are fine but half the bumpers are on back order. Of course nothing was posted when I ordered them so Thursday I will call to find out what is going on.

Barry- I think my first priority will be a 44 Tonner because of the small wheel base so it can be  used in the meat packing area to move cars around. I would actually prefer the RS-1 over the RS-3 which would be a Atlas. It is within the time frame I model but they seem to be harder to find than the Athearn RS-3. I am not sure which Company would actually have a better loco. I have no Atlas loco's but do have a Genesis FP-7 which is a excellent runner and puller. I really like the look of the RS type loco's and it would simplify operations because now I have either Steam or A/B units that have to be completely turned around.

Ulrich- I hope you feel better. Please be careful about over doing it.

Lee- I am still eagerly anticipating your new photos from your layout.

Everybody have a good night.

Good Evening everyone.  Not real hungry today, so I'll just take a bowl of ice cream.

Topic of cars:  I'm hoping to start changing my own oil starting with the next oil change.  Like you Teen Steam,   I'm borderline OCD (no, past borderline OCD) when it comes to my truck. It drives me insane when I can't take care of a problem of some sort (like when the starter went out, which I could have replaced if it wasn't for some oil-cooling lines that I couldn't move, or remove to get to the starter)

That reminds me, I got to post a photo of my truck in here, eventually.

Other news: Tomorrow is the end of my school year.

Also, I'll go ahead and tell y'all,  Next Monday, I get my wisdom teeth out. What a way to start the SummerIndifferent.

Let's see: 1 week of doing nothing but eating soft stuff, and staying in bed watching TV. I think I'll go crazy (I've never been one to do nothing)

Evenin' folks!

Flo, I'll have a NY Strip Steak with the mushroom sauce, baked potato, grilled asparagus, a decaf coffee, and a trip to the salad bar, thank you.

That is to counter the diseasally thingy here just after the beautiful Berk I just saw....  just kidding! Whistling

Chris, my team was so bad THAT first year....  (How bad was it?)  We were so bad that after one game that we lost something like 68 to 35....  The Superintendent of schools cornered me at lunch the next day and in front of the High School Faculty asked me what the #%!! sport we were playing?  He said, "I hired you to coach Softball not Basketball for crying out loud!  Then started to laugh..... Lucky I knew he was painfully aware of our limitations.  But, you know, I sure had a lot of fun coaching those girls.  They were great kids!  Just didn't know anything about softball....  About 2 weeks before our very first league game, we were at practice and i had them doing run downs between bases... when 2 of the girls came over and said, "Coach, what do mean by 'force out'"?  So!  I called them all over and started with a few basics...  "Ladies!  (holding ball and bat in my hand) This is a softball, and this is the bat.  The object of the game is to hit the ball with the bat and run to THAT base over there first.  THAT is why we call it first base...."  It was a long season!  I will say the second year we were voted most improved team.....  In fact we even won a game!!!  The coaching staff at school was going to ask to promote me to Boys Varsity Baseball for the next year as my team was the only one at the school of all the Spring Sports to actually win a game!

That is true BTW!  I then took the job here in Geneva.  Never again had time enough to do any coaching.

My #2 son, his partner and I went out to breakfast this morning and then they came over to my house for a while on their way to my sister's house.  We tried to introduce Nico the chihuahua to the boys (cats) here.  Manet came over to investigate as soon as they walked in and found himself face to face with the dog 1/3rd. his size.  He froze!  You could see the complete terror in his little eyes.  No not the dog, Manet.  The dog wanted to be friends...... tail was going a mile a minute.  Manet just stood there looking like...  Daddy! Help!!!  They picked up Nico and Manet was out of there like a shot!

After company left, I headed out for Rochester to drop the mower off at the DeWalt Repair place.  Hopefully it will be done by Friday or next Monday.  After I got home I spent some time weeding the raised Asparagus/Herb garden.  Soil has gone from mud to rock in just a few days.  Tomorrow is supposed to be over 90°F here.  I will spent part of the afternoon at my granddaughters house babysitting so Dad can go to w*rk.  They don't have any air conditioning....  Oh Joy!

Hope you all have a great evening!

Thanks GARRY!

Hey RAY, did I hear ya right? You say you need to see a picture of a "diesely thing?" Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll whaddaya know? I just happened to have this handy!

Happy to oblige....Smile, Wink & Grin

RAY: My Clear Creek Amana Clippers (girls varsity basketball) had about the same luck as your softball players. It got so bad, they'd sit on the bench and laugh it up, have a grand old time while getting their lunches ate and their posteriors handed to them! The coach...who apparently HAD to take a coaching position to get a teaching spotHuh? had no clue what he was doing. He's still teaching, I think...but last season, an actual basketball coach was hired. She got 'em 200% improvement: Two wins vs. zero in the previous season and for seasons before. I think she also had to start with the basics..."this is a basketball. Your mission is to throw it so it goes through THAT hoop up there..."Hmm

Evening all!

Well got my servo installation working.   Until now all my layout has been hand thrown using Peco turnouts and their nice spring.   I am adding a lower deck staging area and there will be several switches that will not be easily accessible.  I decided to experiment with Tam Valley Depot servo controllers as they combine a DCC stationary decoder, servo control and LED light indication in one.  They also have buttons so that the switch can be thrown via DCC throttle control or by manual button press.  What you see here is my test installation on one switch.

Note, because this is hidden staging my bus wires and feeders are all on display and not hidden at all.  Also, I wanted to experiment with a side mount to the servo and a switch bar, rather than a sub roadbed installation.  So far so good.   Here is a short YouTube of the result

http://www.youtube.com/user/MrCrispybake#p/u/0/AYeHyxWWnwI

Based on this I think I will proceed to get the necessary parts to automate the other 9 switches below deck.  The decoder with the LED's wil be moved to a control panel somewhere.  I then plan to experiment with routes programmed via JMRI Panel Pro so that I can send trains into specific tracks with simple commands.

Have a great rest of the evening everyone.

Whatever Chocolate is on the menu, I'll have a heapin' helping, please.

Got the loggers to come get the last of our larger pine trees. Here's a pic of one of their skidders crossing our driveway. The photo doesn't do it's size justice. The claw could easily wrap around a full size pickup truck. Cool machine!

...and one more pic, this one of a large forked tree:

 Evening Dinners!

Thank You Flo for the Frosted Monon Mug, and I will take the meat loaf as well. If I was single I marry you in a heart beat! Big Smile

Work Front While it was not a great day, traffic was a little better.

This is the start to my weekend I know it is Tuesday but it is my Friday night. Looks like I will not have to cut the front yard this time around. I have yet to check the back. So my plans are as follows.

1 See if I can fix some storm windows to cut down on the use of the AC a little.

2 Hope to find the clear film to help seal the windows from the inside. I know, I should have done that in the winter but never got around to it.

3 Start building the rear gate.

4 Go to the Post Offices with Package number 2.

5 Fix a few RIP engines

6 Figure out the route for getting in the back way of K-10 Mining.

Simon Boy you sure seem to be home a lot lately! I am sure it won't last so enjoy it while you can! It is great seeing you posting at the dinner, I know you had been lurking for a while. Hope you and the Lads can make it by again half way soon.

Chris Or was it Curt? Did the Duster live? Big Smile Being a Mopar Fan, well if it didn't I will take it! Still have a spare 440 and 727 transmission looking for a home.

Far as oil and woman boy I have a few stories!

Ran a engine installation center for a few years. We did no repairs, just dropped in engines that was it.

1 Installed a 3.2 litter in a Z-24 convertible owned by a 17 year old girl. Sweet looking car and the 17 year old, well we will just say I wished I was 17 again! Whistling 6000 miles later it came back in on a hook and the motor was locked up. We found the oil pan was smashed and a hole. Her father said she hit a speed bump and that what smashed the pan! He then proceeded to tell me it should be fixed under warranty? Hum, yea right. I asked Heather (she was there) why didn't you turn off the engine when the oil presser gauge went to Zero? Dad said "shes a girl, why should she understand what the gauges mean"? Pointed out there was a owners manual still in the glove box and asked Heather if she read the owners manual that came with her curling iron? She said yes, and I looked at her father and he wrote me a check for another $3500.00.

2 Drag in a 2 year old Saturn with only 32,000.00 miles on it. Saturn refused the warranty repair? Seems the lady that bought the car brand new, could not produces one oil change receipt for the 2 years?

3 Had a lady pick up her Buick that we just install a 3.8 in. I told all my customers to check there oil daily for the next two weeks to make in case there was a oil leak. She called me the next day and said "there is no oil in my car"! Asked if she checked the level and was told there was not a drop on the dipstick!

Asked to turn the key to the On Position and see if the oil light was working, she did and the light came on. Asked her to start the car, and tell me if the oil light went out, if it didn't turn the car off right away! She started it, light went out! Asked her if the engine sounded louder than normal, no it was still quite.

Hum, asked her to bring it in so I could check the oil, if the oil light came on, pull of the road and shut the engine off. I would send a tow truck. Car got to the shop just fine, I checked the oil and it was full? I pointed that out and showed her the dipstick! She said " I Thought Oil Should Be Black, You Sure That Is Oil"? Smile, Wink & Grin Car had 60,000 miles on it? I wonder why it had to have a engine? Whistling

Ulrich All I can say is Thumbs Up Would you by chances have any pictures of your old layout before thing went bad? I would love to see them if you have any and not to painful to post. I will say one thing, you are make the most from very little!  Did you read my posting a few pages back about making detectable legs so you can make the layout bigger? Track is cheap and postage is not that bad. Hope to one day see it in person! Big Smile

Time to run some trains, see you Wednesday!

Evening guys

Got back from the train club, and got a load of cheap HO scale vehicles. Also got some appluads on the Caboose I did a few months back.

All this talk about oil reminds me I need to change mine, and the transmission fluid. The latter is a pain.

NERM, Wisdom teeth suck. My mother tried to get mine out before 3 days before my HS graduation. Thankfully dad got it after graduation. Pretty much nothing but soft stuff. But I was able to go out and do a few things.

Chris, Hopper looks good. Installing the gyralight wasn't really that bad. I followed the fairly recent MRR article about installing nose bells as a guide.

TSM, What type of van and engine is in your mom's car. IIRC the only one that was a real pain was the 2.3l I4. the 3.8 and 5.0 (and 5.8) were fairly easy in mustangs.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Oooo! I’ll have what Ray had! Stick out tongue But give me a Dr Pepper instead of the decaf Thank you.

OK, I can’t take it any more. Ulrich- To quote Lee, “WOW” . I especially like the first photo in the pair. Fantastic job hoss.

Galaxy- I get the heat headaches too. And that’s what I call them also. But for me it’s usually when I’m in and out of the AC too much. I usually just stay in the heat and head for the shade. NOT necessarily for everyone though, but usually I have no choice but to w**k in it so it’s in my best interest to just stay until I‘m done for the day or at least a good while.

WHOA! I slipped on something on the floor. Looks like saliva. Alright, who said RS-3 around Barry?!

I KNEW IT! Duke only pretends to be asleep. He’s got that snore down to a tee I tell you what.

Chris- Not only does the hopper look great but those girls fast pitch…..don’t see how they do it. Awesome.

NERM- Get them Wisdom teeth out as soon as you can. For many folks, they are a problem just waiting to happen. Me included.

Simon- Is that you on the video? You have…Surprise..an ACCENT!  Laugh

Funny how we all have a preconceived notion about what each other looks like and sounds like whether we realize it or not.

Welp, time for some shut eye. PFTIN.

Good Morning,

we had a few showers of Storm last night and it cooled off to our normal temperature, somewhere in the 60´s F. I feel much better - can´t stand the heat well at the moment.

Flo, just some coffee for me, please.

Hopefully, the new vacuum cleaner will be delivered. It is one of the gadgets you actually don´t miss when you have one, but without it ... The dang thing is that it sucked away the funds I had reserved for a much better use. Old Murphy must have moved in with us, any time I have saved up a little money, something breaks and needs replacement Crying

Thanks again for the kudos - your recognition of what I am doing means a lot to me. I don´t think that I am an "expert" modeler. The modules, even though they look nice, are a far cry from the w*rk Garry, Ray, John and others have posted here. Remember Keith´s N scale ramblings? Too bad he does not show up any more.

A few words on photography - I have an old Panasonic Lumix compact camera, with no bells and whistle other than a superb Leica lens. I use two desk lamps for lighting and a couple of books to bring up the camera to the proper height. Taking pictures of those mini-modules is much easier than to photograph a bigger layout, as you can position the module the way you want it. Another trick is to avoid a downward viewing angle. I used a slight upward angle instead, which is more like what you would see as an N scale person doing some railfanning.

Ken - I have been straining my brain on the issue of legs. Adding detachable legs will not be much of an issue, but as the modules are only 6" deep, I doubt that they´d rest firmly. Think, think, think  - no Idea, yet.

Todd - did you think I look like this:

... and I do have an accent, no, not really the typical German accent, like Herr Flick, but more of a West London one, coined in Ealing.

NERM - teeth issues are bad, It hurts when they come, and it hurts when they go. Good luck with your wisdom teeth!

Jeff - those PA´s were some kind of a brute, weren´t they? To me, they look much more powerful than the F´s.

Curt - I have taken on your and all other fellow diners advice. I told my parents about my condition and won´t be going there, but I have arranged for help to accompany them the first days, until a better solution is found. You know, I´ve got a layout to build ...

Chris - not so much "Wow", but kind of nice. The module still needs some details - I am thinking of trackside details, like a (non-working) signal, power supply etc. But that has to come at a later stage.

Duke - good to see you again. Been wondering about your whereabouts. Nice picture of that NKP Berkshire!

SFB - wouldn´t mind coming over and help, no sir, not at all! But I guess I would not go back again ... Whistling

Garry - you are right, I should have closed that hole with a piece of cardboard. Next time around ...

Have a good one!

Sir Madog

Jeff - those PA´s were some kind of a brute, weren´t they? To me, thy look much more powerful than the F´s.

2,000 hp for the PA-1/PB-1, 2,250 hp for the PA-2/PB-2, driven axles = 4, idler axles = 2 per unit (A1A-A1A). Prime mover was an Alco 244 V16 turbocharged 4 strike diesel. Top speed = 117 mph (188 kp/h) Models termed as PA-3/PB-3 were an upgrade of the PA-2/PB-2. No actual PA-3/PB-3 models were ever built. They would have had 2,400 hp. PA-3s could be distinguished by the absence of the 'eyebrow' trim on the grille behind the cab and the porthole behind the radiator shutters. The PA/PB's were dubbed 'Honorary steam locomotives' due to a peculiarity of the Alco 244 prime mover when accelerating. Until the turbocharger came up to speed, thick clouds of black smoke would pour from the exhaust stacks due to turbo lag. Getting a photo of a 'smoker' became a prime objective of railfans.

Our new vacuum cleaner was delivered right now.

Incredible, that a silly thing like a vacuum cleaner can make you happy - Petra´s got a new toy! It weighs about a third of the old one, costs only 10% and hopefully does its job for some years.

Jeff - I have seen pictures of PA´s belching black smoke, thicker than any steamer could have done.

Morning all...

a do nothing day with MOH having the day off. should get out there and work on porch as is coolest its going to be now today.

Sir Madog

Good Morning,

Todd - did you think I look like this:

http://www.sbeg.de/Bilder/Seite-03-Bild-Abramowski-Ulrich.jpg

... and I do have an accent, no, not really the typical German accent, like Herr Flick, but more of a West London one, coined in Ealing.

"Ve haf vays of making you talk! You may kiss me, ya, on the lips Helga!!" "Now tell me vere ist the painting of the fallen Madona vit the big boobies by VanClump! "Poor Rene. ALways a by brides maid, never a bride. ANd "vere are teh sausages now?"

NERM- good to see you back and that school is out soon. Wisdom teeth...I had impacted ones growing sideways and never would have erupted if left to their own devices... and the surgeon extracted them when I was 19. YOu don't need them. WIsdom comes with age, not teeth! {thought I'd inject a little humor}. You will have soft diet, what you can tolerate for a short time...but better to have them out than have them cause trouble.

Todd- staying in the heat agrivates my headaches...and it's not from dehydration as I am always sucking on a botle of Poland Springs H2O. Going back and forth can help cause them. but being out in the heat also gives to me...similar to a migraine, but not quite as painfull. Best I stay in the A/c.

WEll, I guess that is all now.

Good Morning,

Curt, If it was train show season I can normally pick up those GE 44 Ton Spectrum critters for $40 new in the box.  I bought a N scale Digitrax decoder with sound and installed it mine.

Jeff, I like the damaged nose ground effect on that PA.

I installed the rails for the dock cranes last night and poured the plaster on the front half of the break bulk port to cover the crane rails.  I hope to start sanding the plaster tonight and tomorrow night and trim the plaster from the rails.  I plan on breaking out the camera Friday night, but I really want to clean and paint this plaster work first.

I’m still monitoring the removal of 2 1:1 scale RR swing bridges this week in Wisconsin. The other guy in the office is working on all the paperwork and public notices to replace 2 more RR bridges in Wisconsin. We are waiting on the plan for a removal in Rochester, NY.

Simon- Is that you on the video? You have…Surprise..an ACCENT!  Laugh

Yep, that would be me.  Moved to NY in 1987 on a 2 yr work visa, got the company to spring for a green card, married a yank in 94 and still very happily married with a pair of dual citizen kids.  Never lost the accent, and probably never will.   In fact I am not even very good at mimiking an American accent.  I do tend to translate on the fly and use American terminology, since I get odd looks using British terms for thingsBig Smile

Have a great day everyone.

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Morning Folks, looks like another hot one!

Flo, scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and a Diet Dew.

Seems the honey dew list has got delivered, might not be time for trains today.

Ulrich So that is what you look like! Ick! Just kidding there Ulrich. The modules are only 6 inches wide, I will think on that some today and see what I can come up with. I all ready have a half of a plan formed. If I remember right they are about 2 inch tall with a bottom and the the track mounting platform about 2 inches above that, correct?

Train Front Pulled apart my Rio Grand SD 50 last night. Motor has sounded really loud so I side lined the engine. I had ran the motor without the drive shafts but still in the chassis and it still made the racket. Figured the motor bearings had failed. Pulled the motor out last night and ran it in my hand, sounds pretty quite now? Need to look into this more. Motor mount screws where not very tight, that might be the only problem. Whistling

Simon Did the Servos come from K-10?Do you have a picture of the servo before it was installed?

Wife just told me it will be 97 degrees by 9:00 AM? Sigh Boy, I hope she is wrong.

We need a sweating smiley faces now!

Good morning....     Cereal with fresh blueberries, please. OJ, too.

Anybody care for fresh blueberries?  I just picked some here. The weather was good for growing blue berries if nothing else.

Simon ... Your voice, but not your picture unless that was your thumb.

Ulrich ... Nice picture of yourself. Judging from your great looking modules, I suspect you are feeling good. If so, I'm glad. Just keep following doctor instructions.

Jeff ... Your PA looks good with your paint scheme.

Speaking of PA's, the Burlington never had any, but the Burlington connected with railroads that did have them.

I have a Santa Fe A,B set of Alco PA’s . Also, I painted three for the MKT RR, but later . I sold 2 of the 3 MKT PA’s,. A single PA1 looks fine with my 5-car Texas Special. I did also have  a PRR PA1, but I have sold it along with all of my PRR models.

I am slowly thinning out my fleet as I slowly shift to DCC. I’m not certain if I will keep the MKT and ATSF trains.

Garry - not good yet, but much better, since it cooled off here.

Ken - the dimensions of a module are 150 mm by 310 mm, 15 mm plywood resting on "legs" of 15 mm playwood, 85 mm tall.

I guess a way to extend the layout were to make a bridge of some kind, securely fastened, on which the modules could be placed - just a first Idea
