had some fun fixing the quad today. My youngest sister Martina decided that she wanted to wash it today and I went to move it under its own power, the ignition cylinder turned completely around. Turns out that its missing the cheapest plastic nut you've ever seen in your life and can only come through Polaris. Guess how much that can cost. So I jury rigged it with a conduit coupling and some grinding. Works and doesn't look half bad.

Well it ain't no 999 degrees out, but it's close. About a degree warmer than Rob, if that amount really matters. It's a warm 92 too. (tu-tu? Forget I said that)
Got some scrub removed at Mom's and of course there in a handfull was poison ivy. (shakes head) I thought I'd located it all. Oh well. We'll see how that shapes up.
Since everybody is stroking Jeff, I'll jump in too. I think I've already sung hos praises to the choir, but there are a couple others on here that really get me slobbering too. I won't mention Ray or Gary's or Rob's or DerJohn's names because I don't want to embarass them, so we'll just leave the names off. Besides, there may be somebody I'll forget to name them and they'll feel hurt like I don't think they do a good job. Suffice it to say everyone on here is an inspiration to me and I hope to be even just half what they can do.

Well, I should have had the back porch at least half done by now but...., (ready for this?) as much as my life was spent during the formative years during the Disco era followed by the Urban Cowboy craze, I had not seen Saturday Night Fever, nor the sequil what ever it was called. Played all the songs in band though. ( I wore a white tux to the prom. Have to show you sometime. Good for a chuckle) And guess what was on Skin-a-max? Yup, cooling off from the brush removal at Mom's I sat and watched that silly thing. Didn't miss much. Same thing happened a few years ago with Urban Cowboy. (shoves finger down throat).
So, it seems I will return to the back porch and take over where Perfect Wife left off. She wanted me to show her how to use the pressure washer and this required the whole shootin match in case she wants to get it out dry someday. She's already burned up one Lawn-Boy yeeeears ago because in her world...., gas is gas.
Best get going, the hens are meeting up at the Comunity Center at seven, so I can look busy until she leaves, then sprint for either the refridge-a-deezer, or the local Saloon for an hour.

Have you flown lately and had to submit to the INVASIVE pat downs at the airport??? Or SEEN one of the videos about it? They ARE getting to where anyone else but TSA officials doing it would be arrested!! Texas finally got smart and passed a law about it....they claim they can as it is NOT a federal law to let someone sexually acost you , but rather a "RULE" they have. ANd thusly, a state law can superceed the TSA "Rule" that allows for such things to happen...
All in the name of "safety" you can get a FREE feel-up when you fly!!! Next, the airlines will charge us for THAT!
Galaxy- You're right. Last November I drove 18 straight hours from here to Youngstown OH for a funeral. I refuse to submit to the BS that is involved with flying these days. If I can't drive to it, I'm not going.

For what it is worth I fly all the time. Not as much this year as in previous years, but stil at lest 4-6 flights per month. Most domestic US with the occasional overseas trip to Europe. I have never been treated with anything but the utmost courtesy by TSA staff. Sure I have been subject to some searches, but nothing that I would consider to be inappropriate. By making sensible preparations before travel, making sure that I don't carry things I should not, and wearing shoes and belts that are quick to remove and put back on, I find that passage through security can be accomplished quickly and without hassle.
Frankly I don't blame the TSA, they are just doing their jobs. The problem is that we live in such a politically correct society that they are not allowed to use common sense and actually profile and look for the most likely targets. This is why we get insane things like small kids being patted down. Its simply a numbers game, every X travellers are pulled for inspection, never mind that they are clearly not a threat. But this is the dumb world we are living in today. Sorry for the rant, but I would love the day when the TSA is allowed to actually do its job without worrying about the next dumb lawsuit. Do you think the Seals and other special Ops worry themselves about politically correct profiling?

Good evening Diners: I'm making progress with putting wipers in the MTD Plymouth. Have all 4 installed to the frame, but only one bent down to the correct format and height. (well, the height approx, because you just know that once on the track it won't be right! LOL) The one next to it is getting there and the other two will have to wait for a gap in "life in general" to open up. I'm keeping a photo record so if anyone else is foolish enough to try this, I can give the odd hint.

Do you realize, most every form or variant of the word aluminum, is pronounced uh-loo-min-...something.., except the actual word aluminum?

Ken- That is probably what I am doing incorrectly for speed matching. I run the un coupled loco's back and forth in a long yard for 5-6 times. After that I run them and they seem fine until I get to about the 45 minute mark then the non-sound loco starts pushing the sound loco. Next time I speed match them I will do it after running them for awhile and doing the cleaning. Thanks.

Well, "life not having intervened (the TV this evening having nothing we haven't seen before and don't care to see again for now),all the wipers are installed. So is the loco - stalled that is- as the wipers collectively are binding on the wheels and preventing motion. There's hum, but nothing else except the lights. So, more fiddling to adjust until it works. I shall prevail - but this is not the end (as Churchill put it, "not even the beginning of the end; but it is the end of the beginning." And THAT is an appropriate thought for this D Day anniversary.)

***Der, my wife did some research and found we are right in the heart of the orignal Cherokee Nation (before being forced out to OK) and they had pecan trees. They should grow well here. Thanks!
We had a cool storm come through today. We watched the wind gusts bending trees and we watched one of the few BIG trees on our property come crashing down by the pond. We also heard several chainsaws in the valley afterwards, so we were not the only folks with a tree down from this storm.

Curt and Simon Ken, the owner of K-10 Model Trains is a retired Navy Pilot, did his 20 years. He was also a engineer (not train) which explains why he is somewhat anal about somethings. (sometimes that can be a good thing, I was real anal when it comes to HP cars when I work on them) He all so dabbled in law while he was in the Navy, I believe he was the ships JAG officer. He is all so Jewish by birth, but is not like the stereotype Jewish person. I am very lucky to call Ken a friend.
Gary Come on down and visit, while you are here you can drop by and visit me as well. (I talked to Gary on the phone and talked him into going DCC and he does not hold that against me!)
John Glad the tip about running the engines before hand may help you with your speed matching. As far as listing the order that was Simon. My self, CV 6 is where my engines spend most of there time so I watch that real close!
If the Consist is going to be ran backwards a lot, I speed match both ways. Lets say I want the dash 9 as lead and a SD 50 ran backwards I speed match that way. After I have them speed match I save the setting with my PR 3 and JMRI program. Next speed match the consist backward and save those settings in a different file.
If a person is changing CV's the PR 3 is the way to go! If you run sound engines, you got to have one! It makes changing sounds CV just so easy! Easy to read page so the different sound's with s side bar that you drag to change the sound levels! If you lose a decoder, in stall like decoder, go to saved files and down load all the CV's into the new decoder and you are speed matched again! Best $70.00 I ever spent in MRRing!

I got a idea, how about folding legs that can be removed from the modules when stored? Have the main part on desk and have the legs for the section that will not fit on the desk? The track cost is not that bad, and I know you have some extra straights all ready. Have the mounting points for the legs recessed so the module can either sit on the desk or stand by the desk!
Think about it, I am enjoying this all most as much as you.

Been a busy day around here, and as I'm sure you can guess THAT means no model railroading.... I did go out to the museum to do docent duties for a tour that basically didn't amount to much. It was a "special" school from the area, and they were very late getting to the New York Museum of Transportation where the tours start. They did get a trip on the track cars down to the R&GV RR Museum, but didn't even get off the cars as they had to head back in just a few minutes after arrival. The tour amounted to pointing to LV #211 and saying, "See that there thing behind you? That there is a Lococmotive. Thanks for coming!" I didn't even do the talk...... Help close up the shop, about it. Rather a waste of 100 miles of driving........
Got the front lawn mowed. The problem wasn't the key for the mower, BTW. Still stopping every ten feet. so tomorrow I will take of with the mower in the back of the car back to Rochester to have it fixed.... I hope! Another 100 miles....... I'll do THAT right after I have breakfast with my son!

97 adorable degrees in eastern Iowa today... currently, 89. 60s and 70s by the end of the week though.
Just back from a varsity softball double-header, my Iowa City West High "Women of Troy" vs. the Lions, Lady Lions, Lioness' ??? of Linn-Mar. Game one, 12-0 in 3 innings. It was "won" in the 12-run first inning, but a game "has" to go at least three for some reason. West won it easily. Nightcap? Eight innings (seven is a regulation game), 5-3 for the Lions, Lady Lions, Lioness' ??? Was tied 3-3 after seven, thus the extra inning. Oh what a difference a pitcher makes. In game one, Linn-Mar's poor hapless little thing was overwhelmed. In the nightcap, they put a turbocharged diesel....well, they put a much heftier and meaner unit in the circle.
VINCENT: THAT Frisco unit looks to be coming right along. I'll bet putting in THAT gyro-light is just about as not fun as putting in a CNW nose bell.
Flying? Never have. Just a question, not breaking out the soapbox or nothing...but what happens when Achmed goes and sticks an explosive device...uh, "up" and into a particular body cavity????? Cavity searches for all pre-flight??? Remember, it was "the underwear bomber" THAT led to the current groping.

Hey, RR question for ya-all. Anybody have, or know of any, photos of ex-Peavy grain hoppers patched for either the Milwaukee Road or the SOO line??? I had a shot of one, darned if I can find it now. Atlas had a sale recently, so I grabbed two of the Trainman line Thrall grain hoppers, in Peavy paint. My plan was/is to have 'em as a block of oats going to National Oats ("3-Minute Oats") originating in SOO line/Milwaukee Road territory. I crapped-out looking at some online rail car photo sites.

TODD: Your wife burned up a mower 'eh? No Advanced Mower Operations certificate for her! Heck, my crazy wife snuck out the door Friday evening and proceeded to mow most of the estate (Stately Lucky Manor, situated at the corner of Eighth and Ball)...even past darkness falling upon the land. She finished up the next morning, almost unbeknownst to me and Rerun. Actually...Rerun came and told me about it. Last week she re-qualified on Mower Operations, now I'll have to get her Advanced Mower Operations certificate drawn up and presented.
Her fellow hens will be clucking away in their cubicles with glee and pride, I'm sure... As it is, her new studio is nearly complete. She stripped the walls, patched cracks, primed and painted them; refinished the hardwood floor, and even installed wall track and shelves all by herself! I was only allowed to change-out the old/painted over electrical outlets and replace the overhead light. But, the silly girl, she used a standard Phillips head screwdriver to put the 2-1/2" screws into the wall track and plaster/lath walls. I asked her if she'd used my cordless drill with the Phillips bit, or pre-drilled to make it easier to put the screws in... "Noooooooooooooooooooo." But, she at least DID utilize my level for proper installation of the wall track. I told her if being a graphic designer at the community college doesn't work-out, she could always go install office furniture....

They charge for airport security, but the feel-up is FREE now...but they will charge for that too...just like your carry-on.

As the one guy said "you touch my junk and I'll have you arrested". The TSA should not be exempt from the sexual battery laws under the guise "they are just doing their jobs" or "it's all in the name of safety". If you like getting your private part touched by a complete stranger....well more power to you. If you haven't had it touched, keep flying and some TSA person will, it may be only a matter of time before you get an indecent pat-down- the "free feel-up" on your way.
ah well, I have a boring day. I'm not flying anywhere today. some chores but not much else. MOH goes to the bakery for another training session today. MOH already does cakes and pies for the bakery department. But that for only 6 hours.

Today I go to the doctors to tell them about my going to the hospital and the dehydration/syncope thing...thank goodness TIA was ruled out here... Then after that I go to LHS to find/pick up another Bachmann H16-44 or two or three.....all the rtr Bachmann's I found have been having no issues what so ever....

Ah, the infamous Youtube video. Obviously it has happened once, at least someone had the wherewithal to have a camera running so that they could get their 15 seconds of fame. If I remember correctly this particular incident did result in some changes to how things are done. Did you see that the passenger who made the video now sells T shirts!!! But honestly I have been patted down a few time but never in what I would consider an inappropriate way. And by that I mean never have I been touched in that area. A professionally done pat down does not get close to reaching the level of sexual anything, let alone sexual battery! Given the millions of people that fly, these episodes are very few and far between. Are there some jerks out there in the TSA? well of course, just like there are jerks in any field of work where a person has some element of power. I am certainly not about to let terrorists or the odd jerk in the TSA stop me from going about my profession and dictating how and when I travel.
The biggest problem I see is that our security is entirely reactive, we are a step behind. 911 happens, then we secure cockpit doors and ban box knives on planes. Underwear bomber fails, but then we move to body scans and more obtrusive pat downs for those that refuse to be scanned. By the government implements a security change it is because the enemy has been-there-done-that. So we are defending against what they have already moved beyond. At least that is how it appears to me.
Anyway, time to move on. I just wanted to point out that as an experienced flyer that the odd infamous incident is not indicative of how flying is for the vast majority of passengers. I am not in anyway suggesting that flying is the perfect means of travel and I will drive anything that is within 5 hours rather than get on a plane, but it certainly is not the experience as portrayed on Youtube.
Still muddling around with my servo installation. The problem I am having is that I failed to order the mounting kit and have not found any suitable stiff wire. With kids baseball games most evenings this week I don't think I will be getting much chance to work on it.

I bought a dehumidifier for the train room and so far it’s keeping the basement between 55-66% humidity.
Sanded the concrete pad for the port authority last night and it came out rather nice (I was worried). Tonight I hope to install the rails for the dock cranes and pour the rest of the concrete pad.

At w**k today. At least I am off at 1600 today. Supposed to be around 93 F today and very little chance of rain.
Todd- your story reminds me of my wife right after we got married. I had been on a 3 month deployment and when I made it home MOH said the Duster was running really rough. Well I don't know much about car mechanics but I can check the obvious. I check the oil and it shows no oil. I dropped the oil pan and I swear there was only sludge in it. I asked MOH why she had not put oil in it... her response... that's your job. did I mention that I had just come back from a 3 month deployment?
Lee- Right now I am in standby until the terminal strips come in. The control panel is wired, powered and tested. Because of the spread of locations I figured that I needed 16 of them (2 per). The next time I am up your way I will definitely call.
Barry- I have been looking at the Spectrum 44 Tonner and the RS-3. With the money I am spending on the layout they will have to wait for either my birthday or Xmas.

Problem is, you’ll always hear about the small handfull of hires that shouldn’t have been hired in the first place. People will scream loud about two guys making the news media react pushing it in peoples faces daily and running special investigative reports, along with the folks who spread the stories they’ve heard, making it sound like going to the airport is almost like going to an orgy. I have flown many times and, like Simon, have never been “felt up”. No matter how many times I’ve gone through the line.
Curt- I know what you mean. My wife asks me ever so often when there is a noise or something in her car “when was the last time you checked the oil in the car?” Rarely do I drive her car. Little Miss Gas-N-Go. Daughter’s the same way. They could have a brand new car, never change or add oil, after two years the engine finally locks up…..“car’s a piece of junk”.

From the time I walked out of here, got to the back door to start the pressure washer, the phone rang and it was the kid at work asking if I could come in and help him for a bit. 2hrs later I’m leave the back and step out front to have a nightcap and ten minutes later the wife comes in after her meeting (which is catty whompus from the restaurant) proclaiming she’s hungry and asks if I’m gonna eat here. I say "no, I have a hankerin for Chef Boyardee and some cake". She gives me half a look turns around and says, “fine, we’ll go to the Huddle House then. Come on.” I still don’t understand the “fine” part.
Guess I’ll have to do today what I should have done yesterday.
Best get going before ….well, I don’t know.

I actually will be leaving soon to go downtown for breakfast with the kids.... (the kids being all over 40 these days). After THAT I will be heading to Rochester to take the mower in for repairs. Then the rest of the day will be for doing a few odds and ends outside in the 85°F heat predicted for the day. If THAT gets too hard to tolerate, I will disappear to the cool recesses of the basement to play with the trains.
Chris, the first score for the softball game brought back some memories for me. I taught in Elba, NY for 2 years way back when. Total school population was around 500 students. We were often playing schools with 2 or 3 thousand students...... I'm sure you know where this is going. The first year I coached the JV Softball team (the first year they had one...) losing 12 - 0 was a good day for us. We used the 5 inning rule, and I remember losing a game something like 56 to 4...... I can laugh about it now.

Took some paper bags to a small business I frequent to recycle. He was really pleased as it saves him form ordering more and paying for them, Went to the bank to do THAT stuff too.
I think I will stay in the A/C the rest of the day!!!! SO no playing on the front enclosed stuffy hot porch today now. SHoulda done it earlier when was more cooler out. Tomorrow up in the 90s.
I am also now geting what I call "heat headache". WHen I have been out in the heat and or sun and it gives me a headache I call it a "heat headache".
Garbage truck sounds like it is around the corner. Gotta get teh garbage cans and put out some mail down at the locked boxes.

***Lee, we're giving it away to anyone who will take it. Just mixed up more fuel for my chainsaw and will go ahead and limb the latest beast to fall on our fence. Timber crew is still working along our property line, so I'm hoping they will at least take the large downed pines. They have taken all the smaller stuff for pulpwood.
My wife spends half her days off running one of her folks to a Doc's office and today is no exception. She just can't catch a break.

Cars- I'm borderline OCD about my Jeep, and my dad's almost the same way about his truck. My mom however, well.. She drives her car with the oil due two changes over and then wonders why I can't change it. First of all, she's never home long enough for me to do a oil change, grease any and all ball joints that aren't sealed (make that on her van, none) and inspection followed by air filter inspection and fluid top off. Not much, about a half hour because of there those geniuses at Ford put the oil filter, (Right near the header) I have a feeling next year I'm going to be busy in vocational autos. Mainly because my younger sister's going to start driving full time next year and she wants a little tiny Honda/Hunda, what ever their called. My dad's told me that I have to do the maintainance on the cars now, so for me that's just great. Work, get home, work again, go to sleep and then school.
Maybe I'll teach her how to change her own oil. (yeah right, like that'll happen.)
Gotta go, the girls are out zipping around on the quad, better be ready to fix anything again.
Curt: I found a couple but i only got one of them today..the other one was apparently already sold to someone else...yeah...I do tend to spend a fair bit on my scenery supplies..but I found quite a few things in places like dollar stores and the like...my falldown? Building kits....and elevator parts...I must have a few shelves down here full of them... The 44 tonner sounds like a good little performer too...a couple of guys up here have some of those...which RS-3 are you looking at?
