Me again - I feel like having a cup of hot chocolate! I cut my hair and now Petra is a little mad at me - too short! I guess it is what you call the Navy Ivy League cut Whistling

That´s bad news about the gas line fire. As it seems, no one was seriously hurt, though. We had a report some days ago on TV about the state of public utilities in the US - not a good picture. The title of the report was "Obama-Land ist abgebrannt" - now I leave that to your German language knowledge to translate ...

I am running into a problem. I am about to send out my order for the track, just to give that beauty which is resting on my desk a place to go to work. I have to use some of my "rainy day" money for that, but I don´t know how to tell Petra. How can I argue such a purchase with her birthday coming up - without a present again? The loco I financed from my monthly allowance, at $ 8 not really much, but I don´t want to wait another 2 years to be able to purchase the track. Help urgently needed!

last mountain & eastern hogger

Now if OJ Ed would just drop by, all would be right with the world.

Johnboy out......................................

Guess it's time for my annual visit to the diner.  Gosh, so many new faces here, I hardly recognize the place.  I'm still retired, still in Mexico, and still getting lazier each day.  For those who recall the orange juice days, you'll be interested to know that we're in the middle of this year's harvest.  A decent year, but not great.  I suspect we'll wind up with around 10 metric tons of fruit this year.  Two years ago we cut almost 30 tons.  Still in all, 10 tons is enough for us and enough to send (virtually) up to the diner.

I've been pretty inactive on the model railroading front for about 3 years, although I have done some railfanning.  But recently things have started to pick up again.  Life has us splitting our time between our permanent home in Tuxpan, Veracruz, and a temporary rented house up in Tampico.  This is probably going to last 1-3 years.  This rented house has a small spare bedroom, which got me interested in starting a new layout, as opposed to the HCWD one that I still have, but don't use, in Tuxpan.  So I'm in the early stages of trying to build an (approx) 8' - 10' around the walls layout, mostly 18" wide.   N scale, of course.  I've finished the carpentry work on the 8 modules that constitute the benchwork.  Next up will be backdrops and a layer of foam.   We'll see if I can keep the enthusiasm alive.  I'm trying to learn from the mistakes I made on that other layout.

Best regards

Ed

Thought it was an appropriate title after seeing the report. It was sad to see how things have deteriorated over the years since I have been to the States.

Ulrich, The county used the reverse 911 system to warn people in Fairport, so nobody was hurt in the fires.  Buy the Mrs. a present then get the track.  Trust me you can't work on a model railroad if your sleeping on the floor all night.  No, you can't buy her KATO track for her present, LOL!  trust me it dosen't work out....

John, fuel Oil is around $3/gallon here.  Most people pay a monthly budget payment year round to keep the home fires burning...

My house was converted in the 50's from coal to oil then in the 70's to natural gas.

I've got the MoW dry goods car done for now. It still needs MoW service decals (yet to be made) and a bit of weathering.

Evenin' folks!

Flo, I'll have the Beef Stew and Dumplings tonight along with a cup of decaf coffee.  I'll be in the back getting warm and sharing some photos....

After coming very close to giving up on the rail fanning today....  Came home for lunch and to feed the cats.  Checked my email and then headed back downtown to find that a train had come through the snow at one of the downtown crossings.  So I took off to see if i could catch it.....  Ended up all the way down to the old interchange in Himrod, NY and couldn't find hide nor hair of a train.  Got thinking the snow might have been didturbed by a Northbound train instead.  So drove back up to Geneva.  Looked around a bit and they were still doing switching in the yard.  figured I'd wait a little while and see what happened.  Drove over to a city parking lot near the tracks where I can have a good view of anything coming up the yard lead, and there.......  Sitting with its ditch lights on steady, was # 2307 with a short consist of hopper cars.   Waited for a half hour or so.  Decided it wasn't going to be going, so I started the engine in the Yaris, and lo and behold #2307 starts moving toward me with the ditch lights flashing... So,  I managed to follow her all the way back to Himrod.  Here are some of my favorites from today:

Coffee in a  STORMY SOUTHERN  mug, please.

After a visit to the Doc's, we went to the not-so-LHS. Went ahead (in spite of the high price) and picked up a roll of Faller "cobble stone". Not for a road, but for a small wall around much of the hospital (wife's HO layout). It will be a quick solution to finishing out that area of her layout.

Hope y'all are doing well this evening.

Nice w..k Ray. I think the last shot is best. Those hoses must take a real beating if they always leave them hang like that in front of the plow.

Photographic rights not withstanding, we had one of our museum members arrested while on public property shooting trains "just because". He's not a smart... like me, actually he's very quiet and didn't make a fuss but was brought in anyway. Even after charges were dropped he was still on the "no fly list" and that made life difficult until it was all resolved. As far as bad guys getting photos of hazardous placards and shots of various public buildings as part of a plot, there are enough other ways now that I doubt you could stop a determined person. By all means question and keep a guard up, but a lot of stuff gets overblown when "officialdom" gets too serious/paranoid. And yes I live close enough to NYC to have a real good understanding of what happens when we are not vigilant.

Well on a more pleasent note, off to the museum tonight. Final sorting for the Springfield train show and more repair of the N scale I'm sure.   CUL, J.R.

 Evening

 Flo, just a beer please.

Sleeping back on the couch again! Last night sleeping in the bed did not go well. My snoring keep Sue awake most of the night. She keep pushing me and waking me up. So I got less sleep than I would have on the couch.

Still sick. I had a temperature of 101 when I left this morning for work. While I have felt worse in my life time, still was feeling pretty bad.

Whistling

Ulrich,

This is how you can handle that situation.

Tell Petra that after due consideration, you decided the best present for her Birthday would be for her to know where you are and what you are doing at any given time..

So you decide to purchase the track and to proceed with your layout. Then tell Petra, you will always know that Ulrich is close by and within sound of her voice and can come and be of assistance to her whenever she require it.

I cannot give a more personal gift than the gift of oneself  (Ulrich) to you Petra.  Tell her how much you love her.   Of course I know you always do that.

It sure sounds good to me,   might just work.     (I hope)

If not Ulrich, I have a spare room here that you can bunk in.

PS.  Honestly my Friend I am just kidding here, and having a few chuckles.

I hope both situations work out for you.

Good night and sleep well.

(Siiiiiigh) Maybe layout work tomorrow.

Hey! A new tanker of OJ!!!! Guess Ed was here. Glad to see he’s still doing OK.

G- I’m so sorry for your woes with MIL. I know the older they get they never come out of the nursing home better or the same as they go in. Always somewhat worse. I know. Went through it for a long time. I pray fro your entire family.

Lee- You watch. If the gas company is anything like here, they will have some reason they are not at fault. Equipment failure, gas bubble, something beyond their control that will not make them responsible. BUT, rest assured the folks will still owe the bill up until the “accident”.

Ulrich- Very glad about the ego picker upper. I’m sorry though, I can’t help you with the track versus Petra Birthday thing. (though I agree with Lee)  I see you dilemma. However on the hair front, it will grow back. That’s what I tell Brenda when I cut mine and I get the old “did you cut your hair again!!!??”

Ray- I like the last one. (hm, looks like I’m not alone.) Why? I don’t know. Maybe the super elevation ( or the rocking, or maybe just the angle makes it look S-E)makes it look cool, maybe the thing reminds me of a Hammerhead Shark. Don’t know.

Johnboy- I laughed when I got to the part where you said you were kidding. Until then I was thinking “Man where did he get his wife and how do I get one of those!!!" Hahahaha.

IndifferentUm, just kidding, I wouldn’t trade Brenda for a barrel of fried potatoes and gravy.Black Eye

Best be hittin the hay. Busy day tomorrow.

Evening all.  Just stopping in for a little night cap.  About to go and hit the hay.

Ray, I have to say that I like the last one the most.

Welp, we turned in our taxes today, expecting a fairly good refund for this past tax year, and with that will come the removal of some debt and the purchase of a few new items for all of us (and some MRR stuff for me!).  I do have a question, and I know that the answers will probably swing far and wide on this one, but here goes.

My Athearn GP40-2 is a BB from around the mid-90s, Insofar, I've been able to get the body off it and fix the issue with the front driveshaft worm assembly not being there (dunno what happened to it, but its gone) by removing the driveshaft from that end and leaving it able to pull with the rear truck only, but pick power up on all axles.  I would love to be able to convert the engine to DCC as it is currently still DC, but I'm completely unsure of how much amperage the motor draws and which decoder would be best. So my question is, how would I go about dong this?

I'm more than sure that I could get an answer for this one in the DCC and Electronics threads, but I figured that youse guys would be a whole lot better to ask, and of course since we're all friends here, a heck of a lot easier to ask!

Welp, that's about it for me, I'm off to bed, got a lot to take care of tomorrow (little stuff, but a lot of it).

Hey, my wife was thrilled when she got a track pack as a present. She loves getting train stuff and adding to her (HO) politically incorrect layout. Did a little work on it tonight during the thunder-boomers.

***Ray, my vote is for the last pic as well.

Good Morning,

I did manage to get a couple of hours of sleep after my last post, but not enough to actually feel relaxed.

Chloe, a gallon of strong coffee and a hearty breakfast to get me going for the day, please.

Johnboy, Todd - I was thinking of similar arguments, but I am afraid they won´t work. With or without model railroading, we spent about all day together. At first I liked it very much, but now I wish I had a man cave to hide away for a few moments during the day. This will change as soon as I can go back to work, but right now it is, well, different Whistling

Women are sometimes (all the times?) difficult to understand. I remember buying Petra a brand new car (back when the times were still good to us) for her birthday, but I forgot to also get some flowers. Her remembrance on that birthday is that I forgot those flowers ...

No, Chloe, this is not a rant about women - it is what is is (quoting Chris).

Bama - I don´t know what type of motor your loco has. Those open frame motors used to draw quite a lot of amps, but you should be still on the safe side with a decoder that can withstand a load of 1 or 1. 2 amps.

Have a good day!

Good Morning,

Jeff, I might have MOW markings at the house in black on clear.

Ulrich, I don’t know how it happened back when I was married I bought my wife a (used) bolt action 12 gage shotgun with a Polly choke and a removable magazine for one of our anniversaries. She bought me a large stainless steel stew pot with a strainer lid and a steaming tray in the bottom.  I’ll keep my eye out for sales on Kato track starter sets, but in the mean time I sent a couple inquires to a friend of mine who was in charge of liquidating the Middlefield N-Scale club layout.  I bought a few switch machines off him, I’ll see if any of the used tracks is available.

Rob, wouldn’t it be easier if all our family members liked model trains?  My Girlfriend was very pleased last Valentine ’s Day when she received some HO-Scale dairy cows and the valentine’s day before that I custom painted milk delivery trucks with her last name on them.  Granted the standard chocolate and greeting card was also received.  I kit bashed a large dairy on the layout and named it after her.  She likes re-arranging the cows in the small pasture and moving the vehicles around on the layout when I’m at work.

No real work on the layout to report, however; Dorothy has the bolt of material out that I bought for the layout skirts.  Hopefully I’ll have that to install in the next couple of weeks.

Good Morning! Coffee Brakeman’s Platter please. Fried hard on the eggs . Thanks. Gee it seems I was just here.

Today, I must deal with the bank Mom had in Springfield. She had a small IRA and a checking account and a Safe deposit box that she claims is empty, but were always gonna go in and look before she cancelled. “You never know what Daddy put in there” she said, “we may have a fortune in there. But I wouldn’t make any plans”

Oh, forgot to tell you what little treasure I unearthed at Mom's in a drawer. A GM&O schedule effective April 25 1965. yup, 6 trains daily between Chicago and St Louis. The Abraham Lincoln, The Limited and The Midnight Special. Oddly enough, no stops in Williamsville. No real big thing, just thought it was kinda neat.

Ulrich- (tips hat back and takes a sip of coffee looking extremely cool. Leans forward quickly as the coffee burns the upper lip) Let me tell you something about women. We men like the toys. The stuff. Things we can use or play with. Women folk, well they like that too, but they are into the, what I call, “love stuff”. Things that show you love her and care for her. The mushy stuff. A Yacht is nice, but the flowers are romantic. A sign of love and endearment. Brenda’s little hangup I found the hard way is, you guessed it……,a cardSad. For Petra's Birthday try this, pamper her. Make her breakfast in bed, do her chores, make her a nice dinner, (candles and all) draw her a nice hot bath with some soap used more for smellin than cleaning, lay out a nice warm robe, sit on the couch and watch a movie. Maybe rent one of her favorites. Spend the day with her doing what she likes. It doesn't have to involve spending money. Just acting like young lovers again will make her smile for months and years to come. She’ll love it and will tell all her friends what a wonderful birthday she had because with all that stuff, she’s bragging to her friends how much you love her. They see it the same way so it makes sense to them. Us…., well we can’t eat it, use it or play with it or burp it back up so…Tongue Tied She knows your low on funds but she will probably enjoy it so much she won’t notice the KATO track show up.

Trust me, (digs something out of ear with a key and wipes it on the cuff of the overalls) When you been around like I have, (haack) you just know how to read and treat a woman and know what they like. (wipes up remaining gravy from the plate with biscuit, shoves in mouth, blows nose on the napkin and tosses on the plate)

Gotta go!

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Jeff, I might have MOW markings at the house in black on clear.

That would be nice. I can make them on tracing paper but the paper won't lie flat enough to keep streaks from appearing. My printer is on the old side. HP3930. I have a HP4135 printer/scanner/copier but the printer in it is a piece of garbage. I got it just for the flatbed scanner. Scanner/copier works, printer is trash. The old HP3930 ($24 new in 2005) outperforms it in every area.

Morning all!

TODD- thanks for the prayers Angel. COntinued prayers would be nice.

It seems they don't know what happened to MIL. She has a fuzzy on her MRi as well as the old stroke stuff, but thats about it and they don't know what caused it. She is regaining her speach and remembers nothing of the incident at all, except that she was trying to tell the FIL off about how he treated MOH the other day, and the way FIL been carrying on with his fractured ankle. {Note: he is not using walker or wheelchair to get to hospital to visit and stay with MIL...he is using his WALKING CAST!!!!} AND driving! SO HE DEFINITELY is NOT as "lame" he claimed to be!!!!! Especially when called on! SO now we know he's been being a baby about the whole thing! MIL may go home, or go to a nursing home again after this hospital stay, who knows...but the more she goes to the hospital and to nursing homes, the more she will likely not come out one fo these days. Sadly.

The FIL needs to call and see aobut geting a temp regular home nurse aid to help with her while he IS temporarily in worse-for-wear shape and always as he can't help her so much anymore as he is aging too...82. getting old is hell, we know. Not looking forward to it ourselves with my health problems.

I see my psychiatrist today so that should be interesting. He will want history on the surgery.

Speaking of which, the surgeon says he got it all, it wasn't cancer and that there is nothing saying something can't grow back, but he got it all. I have a modicrom of some relief but not all pain free, so still in bad shape. He said there isn't much that can be done about the arthritis of course.

Well, Have a great day everybody!

I hope the MIL does better. FIL needs to wake up and smell the coffee and quit using the pity/sympathy card for attention.

Good morning. It's 31° and mostly sunny. The high will be about 56° and still mostly sunny (partly cloudy?).

Not much going on today. After all the work done on the MoW units yesterday I figure a day of doing little or nothing is in order. At one point a somewhat cantankerous printer was about to make me scream. I'll likely just sit back and contemplate what to do next. What to do? Build something? Do some 'Gomez Addams' type operations? What to do, what to do?

Thanks, and yep he has disproved his "lame theory" by his actions. Interesting that the MIL's problems were brought about by lambasting the FIL for his behavior!
