Good morning everyone, I am a newbie here from the beautifull Western North Carolina mountains, looks like we dodged the snow last night and it should be a cool but nice day. I was reading the posts and wanted to give a shout to Teen Steam Fan.

Teen Steam Fan, the railroad is a great career if you can get your foot in the door, I know of a community colege in south Georgia that offers tech training for the railroad and has job placement with CSX. Railroading is not easy work, very physically demanding with long hours and time away from home. But the pay and benifits are good, there is also a place in Pensylvania that teaches all phases of steam operation, dont know what it costs or if they have job placement. You can also look at applying with tourist railroads, I live by the Smoky Mountain Railway and know several people that work for them. Good luck and if you love the work you do it is not really work.

Good Morning All,

32F and another 14 of snow last night. Got to the shop just as the plowman showed up to let us in the lot. Had a two foot berm of compacted crud so no way we could have breached that with the Fiesta. We now have about three feet of snow everywhere and are running out of places to pile it again. Yesterday my son and I took almost three hours to free a tag trailer from chest high drifts so we could use it. This is becoming not fun.

TC  - Hope the surgery for your wife goes well. It can help a bunch.

Garry - nice pic of the funny looking pidgeons in your back yard. It is a beautiful season between the miseries.

Jeff - hope you feel better. That tingling stuff is no fun either.

Ulrich - no Kato track kicking around here but we do have a ton of Atlas stuff. I used Peco 55 flex on the museum  layout and was much impressed with it. Factory Direct Trains was running a sale on the Kato but I assume unless it's a freebie, there's   no sense getting stuff shipped from here to Germany.

Ray - Luckily the belts used on the ceiling to floor drives have a fair bit of slack so you'll probably be able to use some kind of fine ribbon glued and colored to suit. Only thing is unless you can measure and string them on the main power shaft when you install it,  they'll need assembling in place.

Time to get to it in the shop. Hope the rest of you recovering and ailing do better. Good to hear that G's tumors were benign and hopefully some relief from the constant pain will follow. CUL, J.R.

Good Morning All!

Not much to report from the land of Buckeyes on another "mild" morning..I went to the doctors yesterday in Mansfield and in the area I made a stop at the hobby shops and went looking for the Ashland Railway after hearing a horn..Nothing was to be seen not even a NS train which could have accounted for the horns..No modeling yesterday..I have a small project-add KD couplers and detail to my OC GP7 which arrived yesterday.

I shall look over the forum.

Have a good'un!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the Eggs Benedict and a cup of hot dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug please.

Currently 29°F under gray skies here in the Finger Lakes.  A few periods of little white thingies are sceduled for later today, but nothing THAT will accumulate or otherwise cause any concern.

I have to take all the Art and Poetry back to the School buildings from which they came today which will mark then end of my w*rok in the matter for this year.  Then I need to make a run to the store for groceries.  Tonight I have to make an appearance at my Packs Pinewood Derby to smile and cheer on the Cubs...... WinkBig Smile  May get a start on the installation of the belt drives as well.

J.R., the addition of the belts will be a very "fun" task after the shafts and pulleys are installed.........Whistling  Bet I'll get to use a whole lot of those.... ah..... words. Wink

Best get a move on.

Just a quick stop.   I might try to make it to the LHS, hopefully the roads are fine.

Worked on the layout some, and with more snow coming, I need a few things.

Ulrich...Barry.......I agree with you guys.  We have had worse times!!

Ron.........Welcome.   I also grew up on the western part of NC.  Just moved to PA about five years ago.  I do miss the "lighter" weather, but I see NC is getting it this year!!

Afternoon all.

The snow yesterday got us off today. We had about 6" and I just finished shoveling.

TSF, glad to hear you are interested in working for the railroad, as I am. From what I have always heard, it is good to go to college first, because 1) it probably helps beef up your application, and 2) you always have a backup plan.
I'm a Junior now, and I plan on going to college for civil engineering, then applying to the railroads, probably of the commuter/Amtrak flavor. My first choice would be engineer, then conductor (hopefully with an eventual promotion to engineer). If those don't work out, then there's always going to be jobs as a civil engineer, maybe even for railroads.
I've probably asked before, but how old are you again?

Well, I've still got some homework to do (stuff that I didn't feel like doing yesterday, so I have to do now). But I'll hopefully be back later. And maybe have time to finish up some MRR projects that I've been procrastinating on.

NS- Well, whadda know. I'm a junior too. I may apply to college too, but after I get a job, I will take a few classes at night if I am still in the same area. Near me I have a huge intermobile yard with UP, BNSF, CSX and Canadian Northern near me.

Urlich- I am trying to keep my grades up. My lowest grades are in Spanish (didn't want to take it anyway and I have no clue what's going on.) And algebra. Never been good in math anyway. Both of them are not lower than a C.

Well, I think I'll have the Big Boy Burger. Thanks.

 Evening Folks

Flo, Chicken Soup and water please.

Still sick Ick! Not sure what has hold of me, but it has been 4 days now. Temperature is up and down like the stock market. I have hit a high of 101 and couple of times it been down to 97.5. I get the chills when I go to bed about the middle of the night I get a fever and toward morning I feel just about normal.

Plus I am getting the tooth ache back and got a thermal nuclear rash going on some where I won't go into details about. Seems odd to get the rash in the middle of the winter.

Train Front On the gear puller I called Micro Marks today and got a answering services, seems they are closed on Thursdays. So I called NWSL and they pretty much have the same thing.

Yes, I was told it will pull flywheels and comes with a 1.5 MM pin. Motors I need it for are 2.0 MM so I should be good to go. I am buying a little bigger version than the picture I am showing

 Car Front.

Town Car Even with me feeling as bad as I did yesterday got the new shocks installed on the Town Car. Yesterday the ride seemed pretty harsh, today it is starting to ride like a Town Car should. I had Bob my mechanic check out the front end and he says it still tight! Not bad for 153,000 mile car.

Todd, JR and Vincent The town car has one oil leak and it looks like it is coming from the oil filter adapter. Bob said with the O ring kit it would run around $125.00 to repair the leak, does that sound right? I trust Bob, many of times his repair charge is less than his estimate. But with mainly wrenching on old school Mopar, there is no adapter unless you use one on a small block to clear headers.

Daytona Looks like it is battery time. Tried to start it today and got about 6 real slow cranks and that was it. Been a week scenes I last time I start it. Going to look for the Runner's Battery and see if it will take a charge.

Guess I am feeling better than I thought, this post was longer than I planed on.

Ray, give me a break, I sick OK! Big Smile I fixed the typo as well.

On the old Road Runner Battery. Hit it's post with a test light and there was a faint glow. Big Smile Have it on a 10 amp charge and will test it with a volt meter in the next hour. I was shocked (there is a pun) with it not being in a car or charged for 2 years.

Good Evening All,

Getting ready to head out the door for home. I see Ray is being redundent again. Oh well, at least he has a cheap (or free) date with someone he likes tonightWhistling.

Ken - if the motor has an adaptor for the filter (and I have no idea which do and don't anymore  - the Focai and Fiesta do) then it's a fair price at least out here where the going rate is north of $100.00/hr. Main thing is you have history with the mechanic and a level of trust. It's especially noteworthy to me that he often beats his guestimates - something I never seem to do being the eternal optimist.

Time to see if I can get back to the basement construction zone and perhaps stop in later for a late night coffee.   CUL, J.R.

Evening everyone.

Flo, how about a cheesburger, fries and a large Pepsi?

I've been working on installing the switch machines at Morris Interlocking today. I was just about ready to resign myself to using twin coil machines when I ran across a handful of Switchmaster slo-motion switch motors I bought two layouts ago!

So, out came the twin coil machines and tomorrow, I'll start mounting the Switchmasters.

Also, going to the Ophir, Tinitic and Western Model Railroad Club's train show at Thanksgiving Point (in Utah) this weekend - and its a payday weekend at that! Mischief

I'm feeling much better now. Guess the time in traction this morning helped. I'll know for sure tomorrow morning. I had to order a new blood pressure monitor this morning. My old one bit the big one after around fifteen years of service. So now I have a new 'talking' blood pressure monitor on the way. I'll be happy if it lasts even half as long. Seems like nothing is made to last anymore.

Evening all.

Today was very long, yet very short at the same time. Short because it felt like I shoveled all day and then did homework. Long, because I did not feel too great. I'm still having headaches. Unless those go away in the next few days, it looks like I may be done for the season Sad

I finally got the black edge painted on the PL42AC. Now, all that's left is to reattach the grilles that fell off (unfortunately, I lost some of the fans), touch up paint, Dullcote, and doing some sideframe work, now that I finally got the parts that allow me to attach the sideframes to the drive.
Over the weekend, I'll also fill out the warranty card and write the letter for Atlas, so I can send the Genset's board in for replacement.

I am slowly getting my exam grades back. Unfortunately, my school changed the address of PowerSchool (online grade book) and didn't update the link on the school website, so I have no way of accessing it for the time being.
So far I have a 100 on history, 95 (I believe) on theology,  95 on Faith & Values, and an 86 on Physics. That's all I know as of now.

Well, it's starting to get late, so I better head off to bed. At least tomorrow's Friday.

Catch ya later

Evening All, just coffee for me. I just talked to a friend of mine that works for the Great Smoky Mountains Railway, and he told me that they have purchased a new steam engine to replace the one that they blew the boiler on. The engine is a Swiss built 4-6-0 and is equiped with europian style hook and buffer system so they have also purchased the coaches to go with the engine. The engine is coal fired and they are going to leave it that way, they have also purchased a BUDD car and a snow plow. All this equipment is going to arrive here in Western North Carolina in early spring, I cant wait to get some photos when it arrives.

Well just wanted to share this with all you Steam Fans.

Good Night All.

 Good snowy morning.

We had one snow clipper come by this morning and another one late tonight.  So far we are 13+ inches over the normal.

Made it by the LHS yesterday to get some rail joiners, and the store was broken into.  The manager said that they took a RC car.   You know what that means.......That was a customer that knew what they wanted, and had been in the store before.  I hate that kind!!

Maybe work on the layout some more today, and try to get some picture of a car (hopper) outside in the snow.

Ron..........I rode the train when they had the old steam engine going.  Very fun!!  Its been years( about 8 or so) since I've been on the Smokey Mountain train.

Good Morning,

Ron, I’m sure they will know what to do with that plow in the mountains. Does the plow fit on the front of the locomotive or is it something they push ahead?

Larry, I hear train horns so much I don’t even notice them if they are off in the distance.  I live just north of the Collingwood yard on the east end.

Looks like NY will be glad when summer gets here. I wonder what they do with all the snow.

Jeff, I hope you feel better soon…

Where we live we hear train horns all the time...Sarnia Road bridge is practically at our doorstep so the CN and CP tracks both go through this kind of bottle neck thingee about 200 yards from us...

Good morning. It's 42° and clear. The high will be 66° and it will be sunny.

I feel much better this morning. No pain in my neck, just in my back, knees and my right ankle. But I always have that so it's no big thing. Today I'll likely be doing some work on the layout. Being that half of it has new track I have some work to do. I got a small plastic sanding block that I will be making even smaller. I'm going to use my Dremel to cut it down about 1.5" X 2". That will be just the size I need for it to span both rails without hanging over much on either side. I already have the 600, 800 and 1200 grit sandpaper I'll be needing along with several 6"X6" sheets of cork. My jar of Blue Magic metal polish is close at hand as is a piece of the handle of an old stainless steel spoon. What is all this for? Why is it all important for getting part of the work on the layout completed? G-L-E-A-M. The new track (about 50') needs to be GLEAMed. That means sanding the railheads starting with the 600 grit sandpaper then with the 800 grit and finally the 1200 grit. Following this I'll go over all the freshly sanded rail with the piece of stainless steel then use a piece of cork to apply the metal polish to the tops of the rails. After that dries I'll use pieces of cork to buff the polish off. That sounds like a lot of work but it really isn't. It gets the track really clean, gets rid of gouges  in the tops of the rails and reduces future track maintenance (cleaning) to a minimum. The old track that has been in place since around 2004 was GLEAMed in the summer of 2006 and hasn't required more than an occasional wipe with a dry cloth since. The reason I would like this should appear to be obvious.

Good Morning! Coffee and a heaping plate of SOS please. Haven’t had that in too long a time. Thaaaank you!

Today: Cloudy, with a high near 35. West wind 6 to 9 mph becoming south. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. South wind around 10 mph becoming west.

Welcome Ron!!!  Welcome

Ken- $125? I know it seems a bit high, but actually, it’s not too bad especially if he comes in shy of that. It’s sometimes best to bid a job counting on a few “problems“, if you know what I mean, and then ask for less. Makes people happier than asking for more, or having to eat it. My parents had a couple Lincoln’s ( not at the same time) of that style you have. They were good cars, but I can’t say as I remember anything about the oil filter adapters. Don’t know if they were angled, or just the regular flat to the block kind. I’ve seen way too many oil filters over the years to remember one. Like J.R. said, based on what you’ve said, I’d trust him.

OK, so yesterday didn’t see me installing any foamAshamed. Maybe, this morning before I have to get to the Restaurant. Don’t see why not, there isn’t that much to do. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll head down there right now before my phone rings with updates on what I will need to do. Any bets I make it? Laugh

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

 Just a quick stop.

I was looking in some boxes in the attic and came across a few jars with some rail joiners, and some other items.   That will help, and then I found a picture of my old VW Bettle.

Here's a shot of it.    It was painted (by me) with a color called "real teal", with a purple pearl.   It would change from teal, to blue, to purple.    It was lowered a few inches, chromed out motor.   Dual carbs, drag cam, you name it.  The interior was out of a old mustang.  Very comfortable!!   If I could have any car back, it would be this one!!
