Good Evening from Winterpeg,

We had more snow last night so they are prediciting that there will be some fairly serious flooding in the spring. Thank goodness for Duff's Ditch. That is the floodway that was built around the city 40 years ago by a provincial government with a lot of foresight. Anyway it is actually warming up and we are in for a "tropical heatwave' by Thursday with highs of 25F!!!  See I told you, a tropical heatwave. Bet you wish you lived here.

Someone was asking about Jerry. He is active in on an N scale forum , N Scale Community, as I saw as posting from him a couple of days ago. Hence I guess he is well.

Ulrich, that is a really lovely loco you have there.  I'm new to N scale too and find that you do get used to the small size. You are right that Kato track is expensive but it does work well. I have an oval and one turnout but I think I'll use Atlas track as it is more to North American prototype. I found that Klein's had about the best price on Kato track. A #6 turnout is about $17 while a #4 is $24.

Anyway have to run, see you soon,

I got this sot this morning at the Museum of West Louisiana. With the oversize pipes and the sound of the push rod clatter some people think there's a diesel engine in there. If you're wondering about the bumper sticker it says "THIS PROPERTY PROTECTED BY PITT BULL WITH AIDS!". It's been on there for years.

Speaking of diesel engines I did manage to get a shot of KCS #2822, a GP40-3 with SD40-3 #3138 coupled on ahead. The locomotives were busy with a switching job at the time. Even though it wasn't yet noon the heavily clouded sky made it look like evening as it was a break between thunder storms.

... which makes them just as expensive as they are here, if you add shipping, duty and VAT. It is hard to understand why a #4 turnout is more expensive than a #6 turnout, but it is a track set than just a switch. Personally, I prefer Atlas or Peco code 55 track, but if I want to go down the mini-module route, it requires either Kato Unitrack or Tomix Finetrack, as they actually interlock when put together. The connection of the modules is only made through the track joiners and Kato Unitrack has somehow developed into being a certain standard for that. Oh, well, it means saving up for some more time...

Trying to get some sleep now - it is past 3 am over here!

I know what you mean on the diesel engine Jeff. I cut the muffler off my Jeep once. The 4.0 sounded like a Cummins from the cat and stock pipes. Not from rod clatter though. Just how the engine was built I guess. Sounded sweet, but can't do that around my neck of the woods without a ticket. Hope that van lasts you for a while.

The engine is actually in pretty good shape with the exception of the ends of the push rods being mushroomed slightly. It's a 318 and they're tough old brutes. It'll probably run like that for years. On the subject of the exhaust system, there are no catalytic converters, never were. No muffler as such, just a glass pack that's been blown out and made into a cherry bomb, so basically it's almost open pipes. The pipe splits into two after the glass pack. The laws regarding exhaust noise aren't as stringent here as they are in some other places. The frame is in good shape. The suspension system has been almost totally rebuilt. It requires new shocks so the ride is a little bouncy.

Good chilly and windy evening Diners! A JR Regular please.

Waiting in the mail box this afternoon was a package from California mailed on December 27th.  Think about that. Ulrich  gets a 4 day delivery from Tokyo to outside of Hamburg; and it takes the combined might of the USPS and Canada Post just under a month to perform a lesser task. The implications are frightening....Huh?I'm waiting now (well, actually I've been waiting for some time, the "now" is that it's the next bit of news I want to hear Smile) for word about a package I mailed to the US near the beginning of this month. I just hope it makes it there in time for a "celebratory event".

I just got out my decoder tester rig and tried the TCS M4 that wouldn't work when installed in the LL GP 38-2 on the modified light board.

It took a factory reset with encouraging noises from the motor (but not a flicker from the lights) Then I re-programmed it, and it responded, again with motor chirps, no lights; but it took every CV command. So, I changed to track power, and turned up the throttle - NOTHING. No lights in either direction, and not a peep from the motor. So I guess that this one too has to go back under warranty. I am, to say the least, disappointed.Super Angry

I think I'll go run a train. Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

 Evening Folks

 Flo, just a beer please.

Well today sucked caboose. Was feeling pretty sick all day, felt hot then the chills. I don't know if it is me, or if the offices section just does not get good heat?

Work was slow and I only had two customers. One was a gentleman that was in his 70's+ and wanted a rock hard mattress in a full for $300.00. Other guy named Rick had around $400.00 to spend on a queen and he bought.

Ulrich Is there a import tax's on gifts? Went I sent a friend a radio for a 68 Charger we got around the import duties by calling it a gift.  K-10 sales Kato N scale track and I be happy to help. If you want to check shipping cost my Zip is 62062.

John and others. This is what the Micro Mark gear puller looks like.

With me feeling so bad today I never even thought about calling them to see if it would work.

Going to sleep in my bed tonight. I guess it has been 6 months now that I have been sleeping on the couch in the family room. Mainly because I snore and hate getting woke up by the wife. Plus Tiff (16 year old American Eskimo) won't sleep in the bedroom if I am there. She use to, but in her old age I think her night vision is not good and when I get up she is afraid I will step on her. Now that I am working, I need a better night sleep and the couch is no longer cutting it. Plus my Kingsdown Mattress is pure heaven, over 2000 springs in King Sizes!

 See you all Tuesday!

Hey TODD? The NFL Commissioner is on the phone, says he wants "their fair share" for you using the "S-B" word... Thanks for the accomodations, I'll reserve a seat with you and Mr. P as well. I'm quite sure I've been a Steelers fan longer than he's been alive!

In the name of being neighborly and good sportsmanship, congrats to Vincent and SAWYER on "the PACK" making it to the big game. May our STEELERS reduce your guys to quivering, crying masses of decimated humanity.Mischief

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, bucket of boot coffee, with extra boot please. Thanks.

It's been an interesting (well, to me anyway) past few days in the never ending quest to obtain and produce content for THAT Editor. Friday night, I journeyed up to Anamosa (Grant Wood country) for basketball. The sports editor for their rag has been doing sports photography for probably 20 years or so...and STILL doesn't know how to hold a camera properly. Had to laugh at THAT, THAT and his insistence on using a flash in a well-lit gym. I saw one of his shots on their website...hee hee hee. Made me feel better about my efforts. Yesterday, I about froze my ............well, it was cold. I had to cover an ice fishing program put on by the Johnson County Conservation Board. A good cold time was had by all. Well, except for the two bluegill who were caught. Then again, they were promptly tossed back into the icy pond. This evening, I met an old hippee. He's an artist and endocrinology researcher (at the Iowa City VA Med. Center). Neat guy! What was to be a "half-hour to an hour" interview turned into nearly 2 hours of pleasant conversation.

Next Saturday, I get to go freeze for most of the day at the annual Winter Waterball Fights in Coralville. Firefighters from across the frozen tundra of Iowa gather for an afternoon of spirited competition. Last year, Tiffin and North Liberty was represented; two of the towns I cover. I'm hoping Tiffin Fire returns, they kept me well supplied with beer!Thumbs Up

Best wishes to all in need, regardless of the "need."

Good Morning...

Well, got home late last night and promptly fell asleep...very busy day yesterday. Had a few interesting things happen...one not so good...on the way home last night I was heading up Sarnia Road when I happened to see a car weaving in and out of the traffic..I followed this car and as we got close to Wonderland Rd he suddenly swerved right into on coming traffic heading the other way...he pulled away just in time..only to run into the retaining wall on the other side of the road...I stopped and checked him out...drunk...    ...s I phoned this in...police were there inside 3 minutes...and he went to the jailhouse...

We are going to be having a mixture of freezing drizzle and little tiny snowfluffies today with our high all the way up to...30F!!! We're having a heat wave...tropical heatwave...

Flo, I'll have a coffee and a pile o' pancakes with REAL Maple Syrup...none o' that Califo'nia stuff....please...I'll be at the RC for a bit...

Good Morning,

It warmed up last night.  All day it was in the single digits then by midnight it warmed up to 30F.

John that oil heat must be costing you an arm and a leg.

Big fire out here yesterday; the gas company over pressurized the gas lines in the town down the road from me and several people are homeless due to the resulting fires. We had 16 fire departments come to the rescue and the county busses evacuated the town.  They said the pilot lights went from 1 inch to 5-6 inches inside peoples homes.

Ray, I agree and disagree with you. There are times when it’s smart to ask who is taking pictures and why.  Taking pictures of trains is innocent enough.  If I were taking pictures of the hazard placards of the rail cars to develop a pattern so I knew when to cause havoc you might hope someone asked me what I was doing. If I were taking pictures of your house, car, or family from the street would you stop and ask me who I was?  I’m on public property so I can do whatever I want, right? So they won’t stop you from taking pictures, they aren’t asking you to surrender your pictures so they can censor them; they just want to know what you’re doing and who you are.  My buddy and I will stop in security and ask if we can take pictures.  Normally we are escorted onto the property and allowed to do whatever we want.  My buddy Ken actually caught a ride on the lead engine of a train in Canada that dropped cars off inside a mine.  I was invited inside a blast furnace to see how the torpedo cars were loaded...

Good morning.  We are having a heat wave!!   Its 32 degrees right now, so.............bring out the shorts!!!

I was going to make a LHS run with a few guys today, but one of them got a call to work a train (norfolk southern)....So the hobby store will be on hold till tomorrow.

Todd........Thanks for the mini helmets.   But wouldn't it be fair for us to throw the teams "items"...Packers = cheese, and the Steelers = steel Big Smile

John......Thanks for the comments.  I just don't like how they came out.  I guess I will have to dig out my back porch.

Barry..........That must have been a sight to see.   I've only seen one drunk driver in my life and that was years ago!!  All over the highway.   A story in my old home town in NC was about a drunk driver that got arrested twice by the same trooper in the same day!!!!   Made bail that morning, and got caught again that evening.  Just stupid!!

Ray...........I've always worried about taking pictures of certain things ( boy that didn't sound good).  Just what I would say if its a cop or the train police.   Most of my pictures are of trains, but a guy I knew took some train pictures and the police was called.    He had to pay a $150 fine, and was put on some "list".   Just crazy if you ask me.

An early Good Afternoon!

A slow day today, there is a mix of rain and snow coming down, with temperatures around freezing. Gonna be fun driving home from work for those of us who have a job. I hope the weather will improve tomorrow, as there is another meeting scheduled with my future partners. Yes, folks, I was offered a partnership for all the work I put in so far! I cannot contribute to the share capital, but they put that much value to my work. Now it is still up to the bank.

Janie, just a coffee for me, please.

Ken - yes, gifts are duty free and no VAT to be paid. But there is a limit to the value. Anything which is above $ 50 will see collection of duty and VAT. They do open the packages to check on that!

Jeff, the Natural Gas Company really didn’t have much to say on the news last night. The power company secured power to the town and residents didn’t have power or natural gas all day yesterday. The wind chill was -10 and this town is on a bluff overlooking Lake Erie. The county set up a high school and nursing home to evacuate people to. There was a 2 story apartment building that had to be torn down last night. It was a block building with stucco walls. The stucco kept the water out and the block kept the fire in, FD didn’t have a chance until the fire came out the roof. 3600 residents were affected and 18 homes caught fire (all ignited at the same time). The local FD only has a couple of trucks, no match for 18 structure fires at the same time. Locals with homes for rent or spare bedrooms took in their homeless neighbors for the night. Some of the neighbors ran door to door to help get the elderly out of their homes, some ran through the streets with wrenches to secure the gas meters.

Robby - Your comment about the drunk getting arrested twice in the same day reminded me of something I witnessed a number of years ago. I was heading westbound on the PA Turnpike between Philly and Harrisburg when a Corvette passed me at a really fast clip. A couple of miles down the road a State Trooper had him pulled over. Some time later the same Corvette flew by me again. You got it. A few minutes later I passed him again after being pulled over by a different Trooper. I figured by the time he got to the Ohio border he might have to sell his car to pay the fines.

Lee, absolutely.  But.......  People still have the right to take photos from public property of anything they want.  I was hoping to get permission to be on their property in a couple of places as long as I followed all their rules (which all make perfect sense as they are the same as what we have to follow.  ie: stay off the ROW, do not get on or under any equipment, do not walk between the rails, and all the other stuff she told me.  THAT becomes a moot point if i am not allowed to go on railroad property......  My biggest reason for going down and signing for a visitors pass really was let them know what I planned on doing and where.  With the paper, if I am stopped, I have proof I am welcome to photograph the trains at least.  Biggest concern would be some nut who panics because they see me pointing a camera at a train and decides to call Barney Fife......  BTW, there have been many instances of police and security taking the camera away and deleting photos after arresting folks for doing what is completely legal.  What then happens is the person being arrested says or does something else which results in charges that stick.  I have a copy of the "Photographer's Rights" with me stapled to the "Visitors Pass".

Sounds like an interesting day yesterday, Lee!  Wow!

Catch you all later!

Good morning...

Coffee and a donut please. Barry is here, and so hopefully it is a Tim Horton's donut.

Speaking of Barry, I wonder about that photo based on some conversations here. Looks like it was taken on railroad right of way..... Must have been a spy.

I have taken plenty of train photos over the years without any problems with security.

Der John  .... I've seen that Swiss Railway picture before, and I like it.

Robby ... Two drunk driving tickets in one day? ... The first time should have been the only time. A police officer should arrest each drunk and have the vehicle impounded.

Tom in PA ... Same with the Corvette driver. The cops should not simply wriet a ticket for DUI and then let the drive continue driving. It makes no sense. Arrest the drunks and impound their vehicles..

I get on my soap box often about drunk driving because i had one hit me at 50 mph about 20 years ago.

On the layout, I am continuing to work on the scrap yard. I have added more derilict vehicles and other junk.

Good morning. It's 49° and very wet. The high will be 52° and there's a 40% probability it will get even wetter.

Folks here were complaining about it being cold and there not being enough rain. Well yesterday it was on the cool side and there was quite a bit of rain so this morning it's not only cool and windy but it's also wet. I might wonder if it would be wet enough for them now but I know that they will now be complaining about it being too cool and too wet. Come summer (spring for some) they'll be complaining about it being too hot and they can't wait for winter. Then they'll be complaining about about it being cold. What a vicious little circle. Today I'll likely be doing some work on my MoW dry goods car. I tore it down yesterday and filed the ladders off it then painted it MoW gray. The trucks have been painted a rust color. Now I have to get the tracing paper out and print up some appropriate decals to go on it. Things like "Dry goods only", "Keep out", "RR property" and such things as that. I also have an Athearn F7 shell I'm working on. I stripped the CSX paint off it yesterday and ended up with a nice black undecorated shell. I painted the cab, nose and part of the sides gray and am now ready to put some L&A decals on it. Later I'll use the label maker to make up some number boards for it.

Good Morning! Dark Roast coffee please. Thanks.

Been cancelling a few services today for Mom.

Gonna try again today to cancel or change to different owners, a couple of small insurance policies in my and my sisters names as “insured”. Problem is Dad is the owner and Mom has been trying for ten years to get them to change the policies. They seem to always receive the wrong paperwork. But when they send the right stuff, it’s the same as they sent beforeSuper Angry. SHYSTERS!  I will try again this time I will not be as nice as Mom (though not mean. Just firm) Plus I will have the old within 20 days, befor the premiums are due again, the account the premiums are auto drawn from will be closed. Then they will have to find me and settle. They are the only company that will not talk to me about specifics just based on my word she is deceased. Understandable, yet aggravating. Same company I spoke of over cancelling the cancer policy.

Chris-  Indifferent The guy who used the S-B word was not me. It was someone who threw their voice to make it sound like me. What I said was “that game”. Really. Whistling

Robby- I’d thought about the throwing stuff and I wouldn’t mind receiving a bit of Wisconsin cheese regardless of the delivery method, and we would have the upper hand on the steel. What I then thought of was the possibility of a return toss.

Gotta few things to do today and then once again I hope to cut some chee….wood for the layout. If I plan this enough I may actually get a chance to do it.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Heartland Division CB&Q

Good morning...

Coffee and a donut please. Barry is here, and so hopefully it is a Tim Horton's donut.

Speaking of Barry, I wonder about that photo based on some conversations here. Looks like it was taken on railroad right of way..... Must have been a spy.

When i took that I was right on CP property...and no one stopped me. I even had a coupe of CP guys wave at me from their truck!! lol! I'm guessing though that the main reason was I've been going to Woodstock ON a fair bit and they are used to me being there....

I have taken plenty of train photos over the years without any problems with security.

Same here..as it is I've taken to getting a letter from various people lately to get pix from within yard limits as well....just in case

This one apparently is a 'repeat offender' as well, I found out this morning...   ...Soapbox? I don't need no soapbox!!

On the layout, I am continuing to work on the scrap yard. I have added more derilict vehicles and other junk.

Well I called Tioga Opportunities to see if they have a guy who helps with frozen pipes under trailers. They do, but I would have to make arrangements with him myself as T.O. only deals with seniors-those 65 adn over, and Do NOT help disabled people who are under the age{I'll be 48}. {MOH will be 52 shortly but that doesn't even help}.

SO I call the guy hes an hour away and only charges $35/hour unless the heat tape has failed-which he tells me due to fire code should be replaced every 3-5 years, and that would be $80 for the real good excellent kind.

He comes and findsthe heat tape IS working, but is failing as the light is flickering and the feeder pipe is frozenat the shut of valve at teh ground AND at teh trailer end. He uses a hair dryer to thow the valves amd we end up with water.....HOT only in the kitchen and COLD only in the bath sink! He tries to thaw the inside pipes but alas gives up as it isn't working. T connectors and pipes in floors and walls arealso frozen. SO we leave teh valves open and we do ge cold int he bathtub eventually and in the toilet. BUt No cold in kit nor hot in tub for awile tub came back on at 2 am.Kit sink earlier. So we let the water drip last night to be sure tehy didnt freeze again. WE have to reemmber to put the drip on when the temp is going to go taht low. COst me $55 for 2 hours of work adn as soon as my disabiltiy check comes we will have him replace the heat tape with a new one.

On another note-----the FIL's gears ARE slipping! MIL is in hospital again. About 2 pm yesterday MIL starts talking incoherently adn FIL lets it go for TWO whole hours before panicking and calls MOH at 4 pm  adn complains "somehtin is wrong with MOther I can understand a word she's saying in English or in German..,maybe she's speaking a different dialect I can't understand?" MOH said CALL 911!!!! and I will be over right away {25 mins away}...CALL 911! SHe may be having another stroke CALL 911! But naturally FIL doesn't- he waits for MOH to get there who promptly calls 911! He even admitted to Drs at teh hospital that "I never thought about another stroke"! DUMB &$#^$!!!!!!! She only speaks one dialect of German and has a germanic accent in English but is understandable when she can talk ok.

They may investigate him for elder spouse abuse. The EmTs ignored FIL and asked MOH all the pertinent questions since it took at least 2.5 before tehy got there to help cuz FIL waited 2 hours before calling MOH and refused to call 911!!. FIl was probably too busy wallowing in his self pitty about fractured ankle that is "soooo much trouble to do things" with adn is using MIL hoverround to get around the house rather than use the walking cast tehy gave him. They did also give hima  walker in case he needs it, but he doesn;t need wheelchair yet.

MIL was admitted right away put on plavix and MRI turn up something there in the brain, besides the old stroke, but nto sure what yet. A CT scan is scheduled for today. I would think the MRI would tell more though, maybe nto in case of stroke or brain bleed.

Next time if there is one, I told MOH YOU call 911 and tell they you don't know whats going on but you are on your way over there and will meet tehm there but MIL is having problems and FIl refuses to call 911. That way they can be on the way while MOH is on the way.

Dunno what will happen next. I fear MIL may nto make it home again this time, MOH thinks oh she'll be fine. Maybe an elephant in the room??? If she has had a stroke again, it could affect ehr right side this time and she would be effectively paralized. Even if nto, I think she will go to nursing home again for recovery befroe home again and the more time she spends in nursing homes versus home..well nto good for an 83 y/o.

MOH says FIL will be the death of MOH yet!

well enogh woes from here

Get my stitches out sometiem today. good for me!

Later

Good morning all: A hot chocolate please Janie.

Lee:

John that oil heat must be costing you an arm and a leg.
....not while the woodstove is doing its thing properly! Oil on the last fill, Nov 12th, was 365.3 litres (96.5 US Gallons) - half a tank cost $318.25 including $45,42 HST less $30 Provincial Rebate. We're down about 1/3rd. of a tank, so say 120 litres (32 Gallons) in 74 days = 1.62 litres/day (0.43 Gallons) - most of which has been water heating as our hot water heater is oil fired.  Comes out to about $1.41 per day, which is manageable; and far less than our electricity bill (2 bathrooms and a bedroom are totally electric heat, plus MIL has a space heater in her living room) I bore you with these details only because I wanted to see what the result of the calculation would be!!   Mind you, the wood we burn isn't free at $200/cord delivered split. We've burned through perhaps11/2 cords in the same time frame, maybe more.

That's bad about the gas line fire. I hope their insurance company is good for the damages. The trouble with that is the increase in their rates will just be passed on in higher rates to the customers!

The local FD only has a couple of trucks, no match for 18 structure fires at the same time.
...about which I've always wondered in terms of Civil Defense and response to any major war or wildfire disaster. When I was in Civil Defense in Preston, Lancashire, in the mid 60's their plan was to have all the ambulances at a central location down town.  All of them!   Great that the neighbours knew what to do.

Robby:

John......Thanks for the comments.  I just don't like how they came out.  I guess I will have to dig out my back porch.
Ah, what it is to have standards! I'd be happy to be able to replicate your cast offs!
Made bail that morning, and got caught again that evening.  Just stupid!!
...and should NOT get bail again, like for a loooong time! The trouble with lifting some-one like that's license is that they don't care if they have one or not, they just drive anyway.SoapBox

Ulrich:

Yes, folks, I was offered a partnership for all the work I put in so far! I cannot contribute to the share capital, but they put that much value to my work. Now it is still up to the bank.
Wow!Bow Save that remark somewhere to take out and look at the next time you're feeling down! That is so good to hear.

Tom:

You got it. A few minutes later I passed him again after being pulled over by a different Trooper.
Hey, got to make back that lost time, don'tcha know?

Garry:

Der John  .... I've seen that Swiss Railway picture before, and I like it.
Yup, 'tis a classic! I like it as it's very much in the "There's a prototype for everything" category. Thumbs Up

Jeff:

Good morning. It's 49° and very wet. The high will be 52° and there's a 40% probability it will get even wetter.
..and not just for you guys. Here's what we saw on Stormtracker this morning, check that radar echo! http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/Jan252011.jpg

Todd:  Closing the bank account will indeed force them to talk to you - "Customer Service " 'Rn't us! " LOL

Gotta few things to do today and then once again I hope to cut some chee....wood for the layout. If I plan this enough I may actually get a chance to do it.
...A cheesecutter layout, THAT would be a first!

It's lunch time, then we are going into the Harbour. I may drop back from the library if I've time. TTFN.

Good Morning All!

Not much to report from the land of Buckeyes on rather "mild" morning..Its 35 degrees! Yesterday afternoon while out and about I saw a CF&E train powered by a I&O GP40...I been bugging Athearn to do some CF&E and I&O locomotives but,I fear my suggestions fell on deaf ears..No modeling yesterday and no big plans for today.

I shall have a cup and look over the forum..

Have a good'un!
