Jeff. .... The van has become a daily adventure. Tune in tomorrow for another thrilling adventure.

I agree. Today I'll be driving it over to my parents place and load the stuff removed from the Century into it.

Sir Madog

Jeff - a shocking experience - watch out for yourself, please. I am glad you weren´t seriously hurt.

I was fortunate that it wasn't one of these newer cars. The amount of voltage on the older vehicles is a bit lower, but my hair is still curled this morning. Thanks for the concern.

Jeff: OOOOWWWWWWW!!! I had summat happen like that when I was working on a CX1000A linear amp one time--flipped the cap off a CX1000A power tetrode and ZZZAAAAAPP!! I flew! I was holding the screwdriver I was using to flip the cap with my thumb on the shaft of the screwdriver----Whistling RF burns are such wonderful things---

You're not alone there. I have burn scars on my fingers that I got when I was rebuilding a Curtis Mathis TV back in '72. Yes, you read that right. A 12 year old rebuilding a TV. It worked for several more years so the experience was worth the burns.

Jeff........Glad you are ok, nothing like that has happened to me, but ask me about changing a fuel filter .

Did you get soaked? I did the first time I went to chnage a fuel filter on a fuel injected car. I learned real fast to depressurize the system first.

Jeffery Reading your post reminded me why I stopped playing with cars. Fixing what is wrong is the easy part, finding the problem on the other hand is the hard part.

Long time ago, my Road Runner started knocking at idle. Played with a few things and deiced I was losing a rod bearing. Started pulling the motor, had the front stripped, pulled the radiator and had just undone the flex plate bolts. Went to pull the bell housing bolts, and found three where finger tight? Yep, 2 hours of work down the drain.

Brake Light Switch Good luck with that one Jeffery! My 69 Charger was having the same problem. Replaced the switch 2 times and we could not stop the break lights from coming on. I would be willing to bet it is the same switch. We finally installed a fuel injector O ring on the body of the switch, then installed the switch on to the metal bracket. Problem solved. Only thing we could figure was with it's age, the bracket was worn and would not hold the switch tight.

Sounds like some of my misadventures from my hot rod building days. Thanks for the advice on the brake light switch.

Gary Thanks for refreshing my brain.

Floor Wars Think I m going to take a break from it today. Plus I need to run to Lowe's and find out about the metal strips that will go from the new floor to the old floors with the new one being taller.

Train Front Going to run down to Micheal's and pick up some more road material and start working on the passenger station. Plus get the last 15 feet of track down.

See you folks later, Cuda Ken

Good Morning everyone,

it has been the coldest night since March - only 4 C. Are we in for a winter as cold and snowy as the last one?

Chloe, I need a big mug of coffee, buttered toast and jam to get me started for the day, please.

Nothing much planned for the day. Petra and I have to do the weekend shopping, so there will be something to bite on our table. I hate shopping on weekends, but as long as Petra has to go to the re-education camp, this is the only time for us to do it. As my HD list is fairly short, I will get out some old MRR books and will do a little bit of daydreaming about future layouts Sigh

Jeff - a shocking experience - watch out for yourself, please. I am glad you weren´t seriously hurt.

Garry - I am fine at altitudes to about 8,000 ft., above that, I don´t know. I have not been into skiing, as we are too far away from any mountain which deserves to be named a mountain. The highest elevation we have in our neck of the woods is just 200 ft. above sea level Whistling. In my younger days, we did a lot of hiking in the Swiss Alps. My parents loved to hike, and we kids just toted along...

Sawyer - when will you be starting on your new layout?

CYA later!

Jeff. .... The van has become a daily adventure. Tune in tomorrow for another thrilling adventure.

Inch .... I was at that museum a couple of years ago. It's a good one.

I'm nearly done building my trestle.

Jeffrey..... Shocking!  Glad you are OK.  Si you need a horn for monster, huh?  How about one of these?  I know it costs more than you paid for the van, but you gotta have what you gotta have!

Nah. Don't need one of those. I have a 100 watt police air horn (electronic) that I'll be installing. That's plenty enough to scare folks right out of their shoes! I've seen it happen a few times already when I had it on the Century. Mine is very similar to this one:

The siren has been disabled so only the air horn works. It's super loud!!!

The speaker is nearly identical to this one but was made by Atlas.

Jeff, Owww. I know what sort of power those ignition systems can put out. My dad was holding onto a spark plug on my Farmall by the boot, through a pair of insulated pliers, and he hit the roof of his building when I hit the starter. At least your ok and no worse for wear.

Good evening. I've been bust with the van yesterday and today. Got the fuel line hooked up permanently, corrected the problem with the tail lights, got the backup lights working and found a couple of fuses that were blown, but you couldn't tell by looking at them. The fuse strip had burned through in the end cap on each one. So when I looked at the fuse I saw an intact fuse strip, but the meter told another story. So I had to get some new fuses. But that was only the start of things to come. When I went to start it, guess what? It wouldn't start. The engine would crank over but there was no fire from the coil. An investigation showed that the coil had a hairline crack and was leaking, so it was assumed the the coil was the problem. Well, you know what they say about assuming things. And yes, by this afternoon I did feel like south end of a north bound horse. I replaced the coil with a brand new high performance one. That I thought should fix it. Cranked it over and couldn't get enough out of the coil to even raise my eyebrows. I had one of the plug wires off and holding it with a pair of insulated pliers near a bolt head on the engine. Not even a teeny tiny spark! Talk about feeling a bit ticked! Next I pulled the control module and had it tested. Also tested the ballast resistor. Both checked out fine. By now I'm feeling really ticked off. Everything I've done so far and it wouldn't fire. Everything was fine. The engine should fire. So then I started looking at the wire connections for the third or fourth time. Everything in the engine compartment looked fine. I get out and go look under the hood again. This time I move stuff around in case there's a loose wire hiding behind something. Then I see it! A three wire cluster just hanging. It looked SO insignificant. The only terminals they could fit on looked like nothing had been connected to them in quite some time. Well, I decided to connect it. Heck, the worst it could do was burn the thing to the ground. So I connected the wires. No pops, no sparks, no smoke. I get back in and turn the key and it fired right up! A flipping day and a half of chasing this problem and it turned out to be as simple as connecting a few wires! How could I have missed that on the first, second and third run-through? I felt like such a dunce! Well, there is one consolation. My nephew and a couple of his buddies are the best shade tree mechanics in this area and they couldn't find it either. And the funny part to all this (wasn't funny at the time) was that when I cranked the engine after connecting the aforementioned wires, I failed to notice the loose spark plug wire touch my right leg. I sure noticed it when the engine fired! The muscles in my legs spasmed and catapulted me upward resulting in my butt parting company with the seat and my head meeting the roof, then I got introduced to the bushes beside the driveway as I fell out the door with every nerve in my body screaming in agony. No major injuries, just a couple of scrapes from where I landed in the bayberry bushes. I reached in and killed the engine then reconnected the spark plug wire that had jolted me with such a vengeance. There are still a few little things to do before I get it inspected. It needs new head lights, a horn and the brake light switch has to be adjusted. It's not against the brake pedal enough to immediately turn the brake lights off when the pedal is released. As a result the brake lights stay on for a few minutes before finally turning off. I drove the van around the neighborhood a couple of times. Everything seems fine. No roughness, no overheating. Well, that was my day.

Evenin' folks!

Flo just a cup of decaf for me.

My son, the Big Wig Communications guy from Argonne National Lab is in town, and we went out to dinner at a favorite local establishment.  Had a interesting conversation about some new technological innovations (Particularly in the field of energy)  THAT will be announced soon....  All I can say is WOW and no I'm not at liberty to talk any more about it or.....  well I'm not going to say any more.  I will tell you to be looking out for a program with questions about Argonne Labs on a well known TV game show soon. They will be filming at the lab very soon and an announcement should hit national TV in a month or so...  He sent an email to the show suggesting the concept and had acceptance the same day!  He also gave me a demo of his new iPad which has replaced his laptop computer on the road.  He is town for his Uncle Bernie's Memorial Service tomorrow.  It is good to see him even though it is only a couple times a year.

Galaxy, good thing I didn't plan to meet you at Steamtown tomorrow after all.  What I feared would happen did....

Other than obviously having fun seeing son #2 tonight, the day has been not one of the best...  I lent my Pick-up, "Anacrusis" to my son this morning to get some furring strips to put under his firewood stacks.  I got home from the banking stuff and got in the truck to drive to Penn Yan to get my Chainsaw out of hock.  Backed out of the driveway and I heard a loud "POP".  Sounded like something was rolling around in the back of the truck.  Started forward and it happened again....  Drove back in the driveway and checked out to see what could be doing it.  Couldn't find anything, so i started to drive over to Penn Yan.  Got about a quarter of a mile away from the house and it happened a couple of times again.  Pulled into a Strip Mall parking lot and checked to see if there was anything I could find wrong.  Nope!  Started up and it happened again.  Turned around and drove home.  Did it only one more time, but where I could coast down the hill before my house, I put it in neutral, shut off the fan, and just let the engine idle.  I could then hear a light "crunch, crunch, crunch" and every few revolutions of the wheels had a louder one and a feel of slight braking.......  I'm betting on a wheel bearing is shot. Grumpy  Stopped at the dealer when I got back from picking up the saw with the car, he says it very well could be a wheel bearing and should cost me.... Calculator comes out.... about $300.....  ^%&*%^% truck is getting to be very expensive per mile...  If it costs  much more than the quote once he looks at it, I will probably scrap the truck and borrow my son's SUV when I need to pull the little trailer.

Sorry for the rant!

Hope all of you have a great weekend!

Catch you later!

Evening guys

Tomorrow is RailFest 2010 at Steamtown! Whoo Hoo! WE shall be there bright and early to see all the offerings included this year. WE get about the same weather Scranton does and we are expecting some Storm and may need Umbrella. Ugh. It will also be chilly about a high of 65*. It is very muggy here now, so tomorrow could be muggy and icky-sticky too. With no sun to warm things up, could be wet, chilly and miserable. But they will be running the steam trains and we will be around trains of all kinds, so it can't be all that bad! I wonder if they got their static steam displays back out from the asbestos removal stage or if the display offerings will be thinner than usual this year. WHo else will be there I wonder? and I wonder if the weather will hold some people back? It was perfect weather last year. WE are taking a train-nut friend of ours who will be here promptly at 6:30 Am so we can get on the road by 7. It's about 1 1/2 hours drive, with a stop at the PA welcome center for a  break to rid us of our morning coffee. THat puts us there about 8:30-ish so we are there when they first open the gate and are usually first in line to get in line at teh tickethouse. That's the way we like to do it. Be there early to watch them prep the steamers and bring them out of the roundhouse and them load them for their day's chores. oh, the excitement and joy! Hope I sleep well tonight! The last train event for us this year most likely. It will then be a loooong winter with no 1:1 train activity and I shall pine away only watching youtube videos of real steamtrains impatiently awaiting the first time Steamtown brings back out the steamers next year!

I see it seems they fixed the spacing problem. Now watch, because I only put one space in between the paragraphs it will make a liar out of me and smoosh it all into one big paragraph.

Hope everyone has a great and safe Labor Day Saturday tomorrow and if you are at Steamtown, well maybe I will see you!

Sleep well tonight and don't let the bedbugs bite! {They are on the rise as well as all this talk of flying ants and termites}.

Gary, Cake from me as well.I think we talked on the phone one time, was that you. I get confused a lot with the different screen names.

As far as the Termites AlienAlien I hope they are all dead! I did have then Nuked 2 times and have not seen a swarm in 6 years. When I go under the house to fix the bad section that the Alien ate I will look for mud tubes. From what I was told, they have to stay under ground and make tubes to get to the house. But then again, I could be wrong with me thinking there was no such thing as Flying Ants, unless they are in a Air Liner.

Time to watch some NCIS! Wife picked up the first season from the Local Library. I think Abey is pretty darn hot. Plus she has a 32 Ford.

Garry, Happy Birthday. Cake

Chris, Thanks, the old girl, as I affectionately call her, is my pride and joy. (well, one of them.) I'm proud to say that I'm entering her in the Elwood days tractor show that is, I think next week. Once I get the oil changed, I'll run her a bit in town and then she gets a real work out in October hauling a hay rack ride.

Well, I'm kinda hungry today, so I'll have the Barry special, please and thank you.Dinner

Here's my two cents on termites. First, there is such a thing as flying ants. You can tell the difference between the two as termites have a torpedo shaped body. When you see termites on the walls, ceilings, etc and kill them, you haven't really accomplished much. What you are seeing are when the colony has become too large and they swarm in an attempt to create a another colony. So even when you see and kill them, the original colonies are still there having breakfast, lunch and dinner.

After spending thousands of dollars, go ahead and ask me how I know.

Tom

Tom has it right.  The winged form of termites is exactly the same as the winged form of ants.  They are breeding Males and Females.  Most are actually the males....  Only a very small percentage of the females will mate and live to start colonies.  Less than 1%.

The big question to any of you who see the swarm, is whether the swarm originated in your house/other buildings or not.  It they are coming out of a wall, you need to get an exterminator!!  If they are flying in from someplace else (they tend to be poor fliers and simply go with the wind direction).  Just spay those that have arrived and don't worry about it.  This is according to all the information I have seen on the subject (and a relative who is in the extermination business).

Mornin'  Afternoon everyone!

Seems the earlier I get out of bed in the morning the later I make it in here for breakfast.  Had to exchange several emails about one of the Scouts I did RR Merit Badge with last year.  The scoutmaster is claiming the Scout was at a tour of the museums and should have the MB....  I and the Scout and the Scouts Father know he was sick THAT day and still needs to finish req. #8 for the MB.  It'll get sorted out as I have been good at keeping all records of who did what so far.  I told the Troop's commissioner I want the Scout to get the MB as it gives me an additional point toward the NMRA Volunteer Certificate....  Well, THAT's not really why I want to see the Scout complete it but sometimes selfish sounding interests help your story. WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin  Then I spent the rest of the morning at a couple of financial institutions getting paperwork together to change the MLK's funds from a Commercial Bank to the local Credit Union.  This will be an ongoing saga....  The good thing is now I have in my grubby paws a Fed. Employer ID as well as a NYS Tax exempt certificate.  next stop a lawyer who's Mom is a committee member to decide what we need to do to be legally up to snuff.

So Zoe,  I think I will have a short stack of Buttermilk Pancakes and a side order of bacon as long as CN Charlie is got the tab.....  Oh, yes, leave the bottle of Canadian Maple Syrup please.

Looks like they are getting the bugs worked out from the "New and Improved" upgrade.  Everything appears to be operational I think.

Later!  (Got to go to Penn Yan and pick up my chainsaw.)

Good morning and thanks for the b'day wishes. Speaking of sharing birthdays with family members, I do that. My youngest sister was born on my 6th b'day. Not many six year old boys think favorably of the idea of getting a baby sister on their birthday.

Ulrich, I'll ask my friend for suggestions if a couple is interested in managing a lodge.. Being a ski town, it is at a high elevation. How are you at high elevations? I used to enjoy skiing but don't do it anymore.

Sue .... You asked about my layout. My project this year is a large expansion that will have a city. Most track is now in place, and several downtoen buildings are completed.

My project this week is buildng  a trestle. It is a low height trestle with a cuve and a 26" long track. Itwill be on the back side of my city.

Yippee!! Top of the page!!  Luckily there isn't a bar in here or I'd be in real trouble. Fire up the griddle Chloe and get out that jug of Quebec maple syrup as Ray hasn't been in yet and I know he likes it a lot.

Ken, on that Zone Alarm thing, perhaps you have the settings too high causing it to basically screen out everything. I know ours will.

Good Morning!

Garry, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!  Hope you have a great day.

Had great painting plans today but I feel lazy and so I'm not going to paint. The CEO approved that statement.  I've just sprayed some tree trunks with Dull Cote and hopefully I'll get the rest done later or maybe not depending on the level of lazy.

Galaxy, I've often wondered why it is so expensive to insure older vehicles and the answer is not the age of your vehicle but that of those you might hit especially if you only have liability insurance.

It is sunny here but only 12C or about 55F which is also making me feel lazy. .

Think I'll have another lazy cup of coffee.

CNCharlie

Also you mentioned you were having problems with Zone Alarm? I have it and so far am not encountering any issues. What was the nature of the problem? I have a short memory.

CN Charlie

Charlie, when I have Zone alarm on, the site or pages will not open. Turn it off and all is fine. I use to have to turn off Z/A sometimes on WFP when there was a lot of pictures. Then I turn it back on and I was fine.

OK, I did not have Termites, I had Aliens! First time I saw them there was a cluster of them about 1 X 2 foot hanging on the wall by where I found the damage. It was easy to kill them. Second time was a different story. I was in the garage (pre trains) when I saw something flying, then there was a second one. Sprayed some Raid and went back to what I was doing. Went in for a while, came back out an it looked like something from the X-Files! There where hundreds of them flying around! I had to use a push broom to sweep all of them up.

Jeffery Thank you, I have not opened Conversation section up yet.

Got some running to do, see you folks latter for Lunch.

Good morning.  Not as hot today, and only in the 60's tomorrow!!

I  starting to get some things in place for the show.   I was also thinking about making some of the small boxes, and the steel loads.  Maybe 10 or 15 boxes for $2.00, and just have the steel loads at different prices.   I will also have some of my personal cars for sale.  I just wanna make sure I have enough to sell.

Also today...I have to get some things ready for the yard sale tomorrow.  Jessica's aunt is having one, and we found a few things.   Not much thou.

That's pretty much my day.   Sounds fun, huh??

Barry......You said something the other day about posting some pictures, well we are waiting Big Smile.

Ulrich......Thanks.   I hope it does goes good, and I don't make a fool of myself Embarrassed.

Morning guys!

Well, the eye Dr. said to stick with either the OTC Systane the pharmacist recommended or to try Thera Tears for my dry eye problem. He gave me a coupon for hte THera Tears, but I don;t think I like them as well as the Systane drops already. He said compare and see what I think. He wants to keep me off the prescription stuff as long as possible but the OTC stuff will cost me $30-$45 a month which will have to come out of things like trains budget {not that I have big budget for that right now after 3 plumbing bills, 2 van repair bills, 1 exterminator bill, and a partridge in a pear tree}.

I see the Dentist for a fitting of the wax mold on my partial today. Hopefully it will fit nicely. ANything should be better than the old one, which jsut doesn't fit welll anymore.

The Kia suffered a failed high pressure steering hose. It was, TG, covered under the warrantee. I have 11,600 miles or 10 months more of the warrantee left, then naturally, all hell will break on it... I had two new keys made for it as well. No one who sells keys around here had the blanks for it so the dealer made 2 new ones for me at a  cost of $45!!! IF they had the computer chips in them there would have been another $40 per key on top that to program them, but they don't have the chip in them. The 08 and newer ones do. One is for a "mechanics key" I give to mechanics with just the Kia key on the tag, and one for spare to be kept at the house in case one gets lost, broken or locked inside. ALthough, if you have a cell phone, and someone else has a key fob unlocker, you can call them and they can aim the fob at the phone press it, and it unlocks the doors. It worked when we tried it at home, but as I told my other half there is nothing saying that the fob was still not close enough to unlock the doors anyway so we will have to try that while I am out somewhere distant as I know in a praking lot it will register from quite a distance. Maybe when I come out of the dentist today I will call and see if it unlocks the doors for me that way.

I see Garry has a Bday!  Happy B-Day  I have one later this month, which I share with my uncle by marriage. Strange how that worked out. Aren't people born in September the greatest Garry?

Flying ants...Ken....I had an aunt who flew to FLorida on AMerican Airlines once or twice....  {bada bing, bada boom}. DOes that count?

Well Jeffrey I hope you get the van straightened around  and in good working order. I would hate to see you pour money into it to have it fail miserably. At least you are your own good mechanic, I am not.

Tomorrow Is the Railfest at Steamtown!  WHOO HOO! {or is that Choo CHoo!}. It is supposed to rain and be chilly {high only 65} from a cold front moving in from the west which is supposed to shove Earl off the coast more. But right now the far outer bands of Earl are clouding up skies here and in Scranton PA at Steamtown. WE could get rain from a  bit of a backlash of Earl too tomorrow. That is in Philly area right now. ANd if cloudy with rain in the air it will probably be muggy and humid and chilly at the least. I think I will wear my light long pants and long sleeved shirt and rain jacket, but take my shorts and Hawaiian Shirt with me in case it gets warm for me. I can still sweat like a stuck pig at 65*. SOmeday when we are there I will purchase a Steamtown Tshirt, but at about $20-25, it really is out of the budget now, as both van insurance bills are showing up this and next month.

Speaking of car insurance, my other half is 51, has the 98 Gr Caravan on with a $500 deductible and three levels up from basic WITHOUT collision, with safe driver and security/airbag discounts AND a homeowners insurance also discount and pays $190.00 for 6 months. Meanwhile I am 47, have teh 06 Kia on three levels up from basic WITH collision, $500 deductible, with safe driver and security/airbag discounts  and NO homeowners discount and I only pay $160.00 per 6 months. We have tried to get it cheaper with my insurance company, but can't get it cheaper. I wonder if  age has to do with it? now in a higher age bracket? Except I now have collision on the Kia, and the homeowners discount i don't get, the insurance is exactly the same. Wonder why teh difference in cost?

Speaking of the Kia I ran a Kelly Blue BOok on it. It is in marvelous shape, relatively low mileage and worth about $13,700. I paid only $10,800 {at a dealer} for it and still owe 8k on it so I done did good I think in buying it and am ahead of the game in value versus what I owe. so I am pleased, at least Im not upside down like a lot of people! I pay the payment every 3 weeks to stay ahead and turn a 5 yr loan into a 3 year loan. Next payment I pay in 2 weeks will be Dec '10's payment and here it is only Sept!

WEll I have written my usual morning book and bored y'all to tears I am sure when I was only gonna write a few lines.

Have a great day and Angel for those that need them!
