Heartland Division CB&Q As for Madison, IN.... I recall the PRR once had the steepest grade for conventional railroads (not cog ry) in the USA. I think they had a pair of SD-9's modified for that location. I know ther are some steep highways at various locations along the Ohio Reiver. Happy Model Railroading.

Ken- As you know by now, there are winged ats. What you more than likely had were some sort of termite that resembles winged ants but are really scouts for termites. I never was told what they are really called but they said this.....They fly around like deranged strippers from southern North Dakota and scout out the wood that would make a nice place for the real bad bunch to feast. They do no structural damage, but can mess up your drywall real good shopping around. If you don't get rid of these little buggers, then they bring the nasty boys to the area and then it's wood eatin' time and as you found out, they could make your Jello mold a bit lopsided.

Good Morning,
Zoe, please dear, coffee in an IV bag, and a breakfast bagel. It is quite early, but I do have sleeping problems again. Just too many things on my mind to get a good night´s rest.
Jeff - I hope you get the van up and running soon. Being without a transport is a PITA. U am really glad my parents contributed to our little van, without it, we´d be lost.
Garry - a big and hearty to you, from Petra and me. Wish we could send you a big , but the FDA has something against importing food into the US. I still don´t know, how material that Tanzania business is. It would be quite a move. I guess Petra and I would prefer to be in a more civilized world. like Colorado We would very much appreciate you facilitating a contact.
Jim - I´d assume that you can find big cats at your door step. The lodge is right in the Arusha National Park, where they have the big five of the beasts. A nightly trip to the outhouse will mean taking a gun with you ...
TSF - I can understand your feelings of moving out, that´s a natural for young folks. My son moved out the day he received his high school diploma. When you get older, you value having family around. This is also one of the big draw backs in our plans - we will not only leave our son behind, but also my ailing parents - most likely, that we won´t see them again, if we do relocate.
Robby P. - that show will be a good opportunity to market your talent - I keep my fingers crossed!
Good to see, that Sue has found her way to the Diner!
Ken - termites? What a pest. If there are only few, try baking soda, it works!
Have a good one!
Btw, has anyone seen Jerry lately?
Sorry Ken, the grab iron comment was supposed to be directed to Jim. Told you I had a short memory. My wife claims I must be getting old as I don't remember or hear anything. Pardon?
CN Charlie
Ken, those could have been flying ants as they do have wings when it is mating season. We know this as we had winged ones spewing out of a ceiling pot light a few years ago which turned out to be carpenter ants. They too can do a lot of damage to wood. We were successful in getting rid of them but it did take quite a bit of effort from an exterminator.
Also you mentioned you were having problems with Zone Alarm? I have it and so far am not encountering any issues. What was the nature of the problem? I have a short memory.
Ken, I too find those PK2 grab irons tricky and so are the ones in a Blueprint kit. I find that the little holes are too small and need to be increased slightly. I just use a straight pin and push it into the hole just to get any paint out and make it just a little larger. I tried a small drill bit but seemed to always wind up with the hole too large. Well at least it works for me. That plus a very small set of tweezers. I find that Testors glue in the black diamond shaped container works well on them as it is just tacky enough without being stringy.
I did manage to get my dozen trees 'planted' tonight and have decided to do a dozen conifers while I'm in a forestry mood. I often think some really great layouts I have seen just have too few trees. I have 80 on my little 4x9 and may hit 100 if I do all the conifers. Hope the beavers don't find out.
I decided to take tomorrow as a day of holidays so I'll have a 4 day week-end. Weather is supposed to be cool with highs of about 60F but we are hoping for some sun tomorrow. It has been cool and rainy so far this week. Not sure what I'll be doing as my HD list hasn't been provided as yet.
See you tomorrow,
teen steam fan I usually tell them that Red stays in the field and green stays on the rails.
I usually tell them that Red stays in the field and green stays on the rails.
Grandpa always told me the reason John Deere machines are green is so they can "hide in the corn fields while the Farmalls roll by." Of course, I w**ked with a "Deere guy" who countered with "at least the Deeres are IN THE FIELD, w**king, while the red crap <explicitly explicit phrase> up on the road."
Yeah, he was a real..."peach" to w**k with. NICE lookin' H, by the way...
GARRY: Did I hear right? It's your birthday tomorrow?? Well congrats and many more!
JIM: I attempted a reply to your PM...err, uh, your "conversation" last night. The new system, or something...wouldn't take it. Mathematically, Lucky's Dating Service for Model Railroaders just won't fly... THAT was a good logo however! I've been trying to remember one of my "signature" smart-rear statements from my Mt. Mercy College days. Women out-numbered the men by a significant factor...what should've been a "target rich environment." However, and this is the part THAT I can't remember...it broke down to where the odds just weren't in your favor...at all!
Wrote a bunch of stuff for THAT Editor today...am now turning to the Boy Scouts article, keeping RAY's sage advice in the forefront of my mind.
CUDA KEN: Them weren't no flyin' ants...nor termites. Whatcha got there are...!!!
Back at it go I...

Jim, This is the time of year to be collecting bushes for tree making. The sawmill itself is almost complete, but we will need to raise the sawmill landing 4". I still have some hardshell landscape to complete.
Garry, Of course, NP Rules. How is your layout coming along?
Sue
Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.

Congratulations, you get a cookie. (my favorite quote from Kelly's Heroes)
There is actually a reason for that, International Harvester is my favorite tractor brand. I own a 1952 Farmall H, and she now runs like a charm. When me and my buddies (who are all John Deere guys) start arguing over tractors, I usually tell them that Red stays in the field and green stays on the rails. Te only good things that are green are wearing London and North Eastern Railway apple green.
Now, lets see, how do I do this again? Oh yeah. Now with the tractor show coming up next week, I need to get the old girl out and change the engine oil and filter. I have no clue when the last time that was changed.

Went to start the van today and it wouldn't start. It's never failed to start before. An investigation revealed that the coil is cracked and leaking. Pretty obvious the coil is shot. Went to town and got a new one. I'll see tomorrow if that's the entire problem.

Jeff ... Glad to hear you are finally about to have use fo the van.
Good to see Sue was here. Glad she and Larry are busy with the model railraod. Make sure to say good things about Northern Pacific.
Shelley told me about an expensive government research project. The conclusion was that people who have the most birthdays live longer. That being the case, I have mine tomorrow, 9/3/10.

Evenin' folks!
Flo, I'll have the beef BBQ special with a side of cole slaw, and a tall glass of lemonade if you please.
Gee Ken.... I hate to be the one to tell you this, but yes there are flying ants.... It's how they propagate the species just like termites..... You can read all about them here.
I've been busier than a cat covering poop on a marble floor today (heard THAT somewhere...). I finally got everything filled out and ready to mail in for my passport renewal. Got in the car, drove down to the post office and realized I didn't put in my hearing aids, and not wanting to interpret what the clerk said as brkjsb jdskb; ksmnc ljdhjsk, I drove back home and put them in my ears and drove back down. I know most of the clerks at out post office as I used to be in there all the time when I had the business and I taught some of their kids music at the Middle School over the years so it was fitting that they were both very helpful and had a good time picking on me.... One of then put everything together in the proper way after another made sure I had all the I's dotted and the T's crossed. Got everything in the envelope and sent it on its way to Philadelphia for approval. Should have it in about 3 weeks. I need it to go up to Toronto for the Toronto Train Show in late November. Any of you planning on being there???
I have also been trying to get the house cleaned up... Haven't cleaned anything really in a couple months. I don't know why but there is a lot of dust dinosaurs ( way bigger than bunnies ) I figure now is a good time to get to it as my son from Chicago arrives tomorrow. he is flying in for his Uncles Memorial service on Saturday.
Last couple of days here have been brutally hot again. This weekend is supposed to be on the cool side. i am looking forward to it.
Would love to actually find some time to play with the trains........
Later!
Sweet View Ulrich, sure hope the lodge has the internet. Will you have to fly down for a interview, or will they hire with out one?
Flo, order of Liver and Onions, Onion Rings and a salad with ranch please. OH, a Pitcher of Milwaukee's Best Light and a Chilled Monon mug.
Floor Wars Got some of the hard stuff done today, one last difficult cut to make Friday. Did uncover some structural problems in the garage / kitchen wall. Around 10 years ago I had what I thought was flying ants, saw a swarm of them on the garage to kitchen wall. Sprayed them with bug killer and thought that was that. Next year had another swarm, did the same thing. Then I got talking with the guys at work and found out there was no such thing as Flying Ant's!
Yep, I had Termites! Had them sprayed for, but they came back again the following spring. Went cheap and there was no guarantee on them not returning. (Termanext wanted $4000.00 had it done for $800.00) Then I made a Mopar Car Buddy named Steve that is a building inspector and was also a Incensed Exterminator. He nailed the little suckers Good, have not seen one for 6 years now. Wife complained for months! about the smell.
Today when I was doing the Luna from the kitchen to the garage I found where they have done damage. If it was over head, I would call it a header, but is on the bottom of the wall where it meets the foundation. Looks like there will be 4 to 6 foot section that will need to be replaced. I had notice the refrigerator look like it was leaning a little.
Well I will fry that fish after I find out what is going to happen with me getting to keep the house or not. The walls are not cracking and they are plaster, so that is a good sign.
Train Front I would have got more done today, but been running the trains to much. Work on the floor for 10 minutes, run the trains and on and on I went.
Did do a mock up of the passenger station, and think it is going to work out well.
Jeffery, I know you have a full plate as far as the layout and Van is concern. You must of missed the posting where I asked you for the name of the Anti Virus soft ware you are running. Could you pleas tell me, and a link would be great!
Time to run the Trains.
By the way if you folks just skipped through babbling with really reading.

Afternoon, Zoe - I'll have a cheeseburger, cheesey fries, and a Dr. Pepper float, please. Thanks!
Yeah, Steven, that DEFINITELY sounds like one of THOSE days... And your boss probably had one of those mornings, if he jumped your case over a laptop power supply. Lemme buy you a libation of your choice, man - you earned it!
Jeff, had to chuckle at the dome light - but hey! If it's a w**king , no sense wasting that, either!
Galaxy, on those 'whole quote' quotes, I just select in the editor everything below the [ quote] and above the part I DO want in there, and cut or hit the delete key. Then I select everything above the [ /quote] and below the last of the part I want, and do likewise. Voila! I get only what I want. Now, next - how to fix that double/triple spacing between paragraphs...Hmmm... Oh, congrats on the new 'eyes'!
Robby, I'd second the comment about maybe you could 'retire' to just doing weathering, and put yourself through college with THAT.
Barry - what was your MRR haul? More cars, figures, buildings? And did your sister hit a good yard sale and score bigtime for you, or how'd you get the loot? Inquiring minds and all that....
I see that Morgan was practicing for Comedy Club last night...
Todd - Lee- You actually personally know a person who does not own a computer? Wow. I’ve only heard of them. Unless he’s like, real old. You know, in his fifties. ...Chuckle... tee hee...
Lee- You actually personally know a person who does not own a computer? Wow. I’ve only heard of them. Unless he’s like, real old. You know, in his fifties.
Hey! Sue stopped by - YAY! So in case she goes by again, I'm wanting to see some pics from the layout, which always was looking pretty good as I recall. How'd the sawmill area turn out?
Ulrich, the prospective hotel offer sounds good, and that patio would be nice for breakfast coffee, I'd say. Now, how close are the likeliest 'big cats' around there?
FYI, I noticed after looking through the Walthers Sept. flyer today, that they have what looks suspiciously like one of the W-S vehicles, except - it's labelled as from Koch! Huh? So I go to the Walthers site, figuring it's a misprint and they got the wrong pic to go with the stock number. Nope - a search for that stock number shows the same image of a W-S looking vehicle(!). I then did an advanced search under 'Vehicles' with Koch for the manufacturer, got several familiar-looking vehicles.
So I'm wondering if Woodland Scenics has licensed sold their slower-selling HO scale vehicles to Koch? 'Cause I noted that in the same flyer, there were N scale W-S vehicles, so they didn't just sell the vehicles part of their biz to Koch. Curious...
On my problem with the P2K itsy-bitsy grabirons, I've about decided to ask our club guru Kevin what he would charge just to glue on the grabirons on my P2K boxcars for me (and leave the rest of the assembly to me to finish). It's that, or get the right size wire and start making my own (more durable) ones. I'll have to take a look at my P2K gondolas and see how the grabirons are on them.
About time for me to head home. May be able to swing by later this evening to catch what else is happenin' in the Diner. If I don't, prayers will still continue for those of us in need of healing and comfort (and prospective jobs).
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Hey guys.
Urlich, Nice view. Too bad you couldn't get a job here in the States, but to be honest, if I had my way, I'd move down to Texas, Tennessee or even to Sussex or Doncaster in the UK. I've gotten fed up with Illinois and want to move so bad. Bad thing is I've got family up here, and a little pain in the neck called being under age to move out on my own. But sometimes I wouldn't have it any other way.
Jeff, best of luck on getting your van up and running. Too bad your nephew didn't show up to help you with the work.
Everyone, thanks for the kudos on the trackplan, I'm liking it to.
In study hall today I went over operations with a copy I had printed out and found two things I'm going to want to fix:
The switch for the storage spur along the main needs to be swapped with the switch to the yard. this will also solve my second problem, which is the yard is a bit too short. I figure 3-4 inches longer will be plenty, though I'm hoping for as much as 6 inches.
My nephew told me at noon today that he would be right out to help with the van. Here it is 4 pm and no nephew. Why am I not surprised?
Ray.......I was hoping to have a mix of cars, in-case people wanted weathered models of other eras. I will have to look and see what I can find. So once I see I might be in touch to see how I need to weather them.
Tom.........I will have two tables. One for selling, and one for demos. A manager of the show said that the will make announcements for when I will have a demo going. I don't know yet what I will show (demo), or what times. The demo table will be up for the whole show for people to try things. I also have to find some old cars for people to work on. I don't have to many of them thou. I will let you know when/where I will be located at.
"Rust, whats not to love?"
Good Afternoon,
a boring day today. Petra came home early from her GULAG, so that was a boost to me. No news from Tanzania, yet. I will have to wait for a few more days.
The medical issue is also one of my concerns. I guess I need a little more medical care than your regular bush doctor can offer. I need to find out.
Not much railroading in Tanzania. The Chinese built a railroad in the 1970´s, IIRC. All I know, that ROVOS Rail runs the "Pride of Africa" train from Cape Town to Daressalam, now and then.
Here is a pic, showing the view from one of the lodge´s patios:
Nice, isn´ t it?
Good morning. It's 75 and sunny. The high will be 92 and it will be partly cloudy.Today I expect to have the fuel line on the van installed permanently, so it should be mobile by this evening at the latest. The only major thing remaining is replacing the head lights. That as we all know takes money which is in short supply at the moment, so that has to be put off until I have the funds for it. No big deal. That gives me more time to chase down the gremlin in the tail light wiring. Yesterday I had to put off clearing out the Century to get the van insured and registered. I had the license plate from the Century transferred to the van so at least I didn't have to get a new plate. Possibly tomorrow I'll finish clearing out the Century. Once that's done I'll call the scrap yard to come and get it. My mother is eager to have it out of her driveway. It'll be easier to clear if I can get the van down there. Then I can transfer the stuff from one vehicle to the other. Especially the light bar. That's a heavy thing and I don't intend to carry it any further than I have to. It's not just the weight of the bar, there's 10 feet of heavy cable that's attached to it. Hopefully after all this is over with I can get back to the layout.
Good morning, All. Coffee and a cinnamon roll, please, Chloe.
I have not been in for a while, but I assure you that we have had lots of layout time. We are trying to develop operations. We have a new staging yard started, and the planning for operations at the sawmill.
Hope that you are all doing well.
Morning everybody,
Been a busy morning so far, first on the agenda was breakfast at a local restaurant, then came home and got 3 loads of wash done and 3 more to go. The wife has been ill and in bed since Monday. Slowly starting to feel a little better so hopefully she is getting over this bug.
Robby, I hope you get it worked out and can get a table at the show. I'm planning on attending as usual, so I'll be sure to stop by and say hello.
Everyone have a great day.

Mornin' Everyone!
Zoe I'll have the #2 special, over easy on the eggs (nice to be able to get them THAT way again!), bacon, No change THAT to a slice of Kentucky Ham, home fries, and a double order of your fresh baked sourdough toast to go along with my dark roast coffe in a R&GV RR Mug.
Madison, IN, huh? Nice view of the Ohio River. Isn't THAT Kentucky right over there across the way? I'll check on using the R&GV #4 track for next months set out. Hopefully RG&E #1941 should be ready to make the move.
Ulrich, if you take the offer to go to Tanzania, I hope it works out to be a great move. I would definitely check out the medical stuff and insurance before accepting.
Todd? Keys? They still make keys for a car??? I thought all you can get these days are electronic gizmos that open the doors, start the car, flash all the lights, and blow the horn...... Actually I did specify THAT if they wanted to sell me a car, it had to have a plain old fashioned key when I bought the Yaris......... The salesman looked at me as if i was nuts. They did find one in one of the colors I would accept which was pretty much any of them they make.
Oh.... Mornin' Bill!
Nice to see it is busy in here this morning. They must have fixed the air conditioning. Currently 79°F here in the Finger lakes with a high of 88°F later today. Don't think it got down below 70 last night around here. The lawn can wait until the temp cools down over the weekend.
Speaking of weather? Robby, good luck and have fun at the show. Hopefully you will get a whole pile of orders for cars. Still wish you did 1925 era.......
Have a great day, and all you folks along the Atlantic Coast stay safe this week end with Earl moving up the coast.
