Keith - my application is with our Federal Labor Administration, so they guy I will be meeting is an "official". No idea, what I will be in for, but I have a very positive attitude about it and I am confident, that I will make it. After all, I know, who and what I am.

Btw, I like the pic of those trucks with the painted springs! How´d ya do it. I could not - too small for my eyes!

I will keep you all posted on the outcome of tomorrow´s interview!

I believe the systems we have are for the good. In no way am I upset at all with those who are on these systems temporarily because of loss of jobs, careers, sickness or any number of reasons an able person is without work for a while and needs some help or needs some assitance to help make ends meet until things get better. Nor am I upset about folks who have worked and are now disabled, or in some cases never really could, or for any number of reasons cannot work, and are on it more or less permanently.

I have to agree with this myself. Many times I've seen people have to go on the programs just to make ends meet after losing the jobs or sustaining an injury through no fault of their own. Then there are those such as myself who have no other choice. Every time I go back to work I end up in the hospital again and Social Security finally said enough is enough and have put me on permanent SSI. It's not something I wanted but what else can I do? Sell pencils on a street corner? Can't do that either since it's illegal here. Just doing light work outside for two or three hours is enough to have me out of action for a couple of days. My doctor told me years ago that I'd probably never live to see 65 and it's looking like he's right, as I'm getting worse with each passing year. Now the ones that really get my goat of those that take advantage of the system just because they feel they can and that they feel the world owes them a living. They're able bodied, healthy as a horse and able to do ANY work thrown their way yet are as lazy as the day is long. Those people really tick me off! They make it so much harder for those like myself with legitimate claims to get the assistance they need.

Jeff - this is so sad, so very sad!  It just can´t be! I won´t accept this. Don´t know whether the Big Fella above is listening to me, but I do hope, he does, if only for this. You are in Petra´s and my heart!

Jeff. I feel badly about your situation. I also agree fully with you concluding comments about able bodied people who abuse the system and sponge off of others rather than earning their living like most people. These freeloaders dulute the limited funding available for valid hardship cases. It's theft in my opinion. Anyhow, Jeff, I'm glad you are regular diner, and hope that continues indefinately.

Need help please: Our Polaris 6x6 Ranger (think ATV) won't start. Couple days ago it would start and then immediately stall. Thought it was out of gas, but after filling tank today, that proved wishful thinking. Now it doesn't even catch. I hear something spinning with no attempt at starting? Praying it is a clogged fuel filter, but I dread it's something more serious. Any thoughts/suggestions much appreciated. If we have to buy a trailer to take it somewhere, there goes ALL our train funds, period.

Well Rob.. lol.. I'm the last one you'd should be askin~ .. lol.. woot.. ~!  Gosh darn.. you sure Jeff isn't around? ...lol.  But you know me.. "Hey!.. Can I help?"

Ok.. lets run down the list..

Nah.. forget the list.. we looking for something.. either you over-looked.... or beyond the obvious of turning the fuel switch toggle to the 'ON' position.

Ok.. first thing I thought.. hmm probably a small carbon deposit.. in between the spark plug and the electrode.. the gap.. has a deposit there.. check the gap.

And being that you've told us .. absolutely nothing of what you tried..  Let try something different.

What kind of use did it have prior to it failing?

Muddy rutts, Dusty roads?  Pouring rain onto the wiring?

And the basic question.. does this seem electrical or starving for fuel.. and/or spark.

Ghee I wish I could help.   Where's Jeff?

Good afternoon.... I don't have any ATV's, don't know nothing about them...but I found this, it may help:

It's a Polaris Ranger forum. Can't hurt, might help...what EMS providers call a "class 3 intervention."

I'll throw-in my "I second THAT motion" to TODD's comments. The entitlement mentality is destroying this country...and as ULRICH has found, is destroying Europe as well.  I've ranted about customers I had who were milking the system...and living a far more comfortable life than my wife and I (and we work for every dime we get); so won't repeat THAT (as the soapbox screams across the floor in my direction).

Afternoon ya'll

Been doing some work to the U33C that I detailed (pics in WPF thread). I painted the grabs to match the area below them, then painted the ends of the MU hoses silver. I also hit the grilles with black paint, hit the loco with another wash, and drybrushed the rooftop radiator secton silver. I saw the thing about drybrushing silver on the grilles on another forum where someone weathered a GEVO with a similar method. The new wash seems to have faded the black to have a slight brown-gray hue it and the green seems a bit darker. Kind of looks like it's an unit that hasn't been painted in a while and has been a helper on some coal drags. new pics later.

Rob, So it spins but doesn't start. Sounds like an electrical issue to me. I don't know about the polaris engine, but I'd say check the wires to the spark plugs, ignition coil, starter, and distributor (if it has one). My car exhibited similar issues when I had a starter that wouldn't kick and when I knocked a wire to the distributor loose.

Jeff, that sucks about the situation. I also agree fully about the freeloaders.

Good Evening All,

Just about to stroll out of the shop of off to the rail museum.

Rob - First check for disconnected control cables or wires that rattled off. Pull the spark plug(s) and see if you have spark. When you spin the motor over with the plug out but held to a good ground on the motor (with insulated pliers or heavy gloves - you don't want to be the ground) see if you get sparks when cranking over. If sparks, then clean and refit the plug. Now check the fuel filter. You should be able to detach it and check for dirt and flow. Usually they are gravity feed and if you hold a small pan beneath the detached end of the filter, fuel should flow freely. If no fuel flow, detach the filter entirely and check again. If flow still doesn't occur check the supply line for clogs. If you get flow after removing the filter, replace the filter. If you have spark and fuel but still no ignition, remove and check the air filter to see if it's clogged with dirt (or nesting critters). Check to see if the carb cable operates the carb. If all this works and it still won't start you have something more serious, but usually it's one of the big three (spark, fuel, air). Good Luck.  J.R.

Chris, have fun with that. As to the speech, I remembered it perfectly before and after, but got up there and forgot it. and I have a skit due for presentation monday in world geo. ain't high school grand? well, my little bro got his first homer tonight. it was an inside the park homer though, and he almost had another one, but according to the ump the ball was in the infield before he rounded third (that's the rule in his age group), even though he was around third. oh well.

Tomorrow morning I have an appointment to go see my primary doctor so he can discuss the results of my last physical with me and to check to see how my hand tremors are doing. Thanks to the Zanax he put me on they are almost non-existent now. Aside from the usual shake I have from my nerve damage I have just a slight quiver of the third finger on the left hand and of the first finger on the right hand. Later today I should be able to get my parent's yard cut. That's get me $20 I didn't have before that I can add to the van parts fund. Every little bit helps.

Jeff, hopefully you can continue to feel better.  The van is looking pretty good.

Keep your fingers crossed; I just poured two rubber molds tonight in the basement for gondola scrap metal loads.  We shall see how the molds turn out in the morning.

They make it so much harder for those like myself with legitimate claims to get the assistance they need.

I see where this could develop into a bit of a flame war, but I will risk adding some to it.

Well said Jeffrey. As many of you know I, too, draw SSD, based on the years I did work and what I earned while I worked in the past. I am on it for several reasons, accepted without  hesitation as a "whole package" by an Administrative Law Judge on the appeals process after being denied three times prior. For awhile my only support was welfare while my applications for SSD were submitted., and anyone who thinks you can live on $300 a month and $100 in food stamps is...well...out of their mind. I am on it for psychiatric problems as well as physical problems.I now take 21 different medications, none of which I can safely really do without. My prescriptions cost in excess of $14,000.00 a year.

As I have aged during the last 7 years I have been on SSD, my body's conditions have gone from bad to worse to worser. My heart is in bad shape teh upper left ventrical is apparently not function correctly by EKG now, and my heart is  enlarged; my lungs are in bad shape, the lowest lobe of the left lung may have to be removed and I require Oxygen at night; my digestive system is in disarray requiring surgeries to "fix and patch up" my system so it will work "semi normal"; I am BiPolar/ {manic/depressive}. I am only 46, but I, too, may not live to see 65 at the rate I am going and teh way my body is deteriorating. With the muscle relaxers and pain meds, I no longer feel safe to drive myself.

I saw the neurologist today who is sending me on to the neurosurgeon for my back issues. I saw my psychiatrist today too. He got a "flag" from the pharmacy watch dog at mental health services questioning the number of psycotrops I was taking. We eliminated one, and decreased another's frequency of dosage. Tomorrow I see my Primary Care Physician to update him on the neuro problem and my hospital stay results. Thursday it's back to the urologist to have the catheter removed, which may have to be reinserted a week or so later for another 10 days so I can pee. Four Dr.s in 3 days!!! And more tests to come for cardiologist in a month when I see him, and some tests for the neurosurgeon I am sure.

I have a sheet with my whole medical history crammed on it in 9-point type to give to each Dr. or to update them as I see them, as it is always changing and I can't remember it all anymore. This last trip to the hospital it took the nurse 45 minutes to enter in all my medical history from my cheat sheet on the new computer system they have now.

There are those who scam the system for sure, but for people like me and Jeff it is a god send. I can't stand for more than a half hour comfortably before my back is in searing pain feeling like my muscles are being ripped from my bones. I have problems accomplishing basic household chores. ANy bending or lifting is all but out of the question any more. Sitting for long periods is also difficult on my back.

Thank goodness I have another half to help along the way, as I tend to be reclusive enough already.

My local fire dept. is always begging for volunteers. I have wished I could voluteer for something for them. I thought even being a "flag boy" at teh scene of a fire I could do, but I can't stand that long, nor can I breathe in the smoke a fire causes. Maybe i could shuffle paperwork at teh station or sit and field calls at the empty station while they are out fighting a fire. But, alas, that is not really the type of volunteer they need.

Mind you, I do not try to bemoan my life, just accept it as best as I can. Every three years they review my case and so far have continued my case, but it gets nerve racking betwen the time they ask for more info, hospital/Dr.s records or updates and the time I get notice they will continue my case...I am not "able-bodied" nor am I exactly "sound of mind".

Well I have rambled enough about it and bored anyone who cared to read it all to death I am sure.

I hope every one has a great night. My new muscle relaxer may help me to sleep better tonight.

Good evening Folks: Just a small slabof no-sugar-added dark chocolate please, and a JR Regular, thanks, Chloe.

Jeff:

Now, I've received several requests for info as to why I'm using cheap spray paints. Three reasons. #1, I don't have the money for automotive quality paint, #2, I'm not restoring the vehicle, just making it more presentable than a rolling patchwork quilt with a few pieces missing, #3, I see no reason to waste expensive paint on a nearly 30 year old vehicle. As it is, this paint job has cost $80 so far.
...but not from me, my friend! I'm so totally with you on THAT, it's scary! Approve - although I do need to clear up some of the junk (kept as "it'll come in handy some day) laying around the shed/garage/yard!Blindfold

Ulrich:

It is my parents, who don´t want to be dependent, not even on us!
...very difficult that, and it seems universal. We had word yesterday about a neighbour, widowed a few years ago, whose only son lives in Dartmouth (so, 1½ hours away minimum) she has lost the sight in one eye (no working retina) and has a tear in the retina of the other. Now, and suddenly legally blind, banned from driving in a situation where without wheels or close relatives, you are VERY dependent. Will she move to Dartmouth so Frank can help her? Not a chance - as of Kris' visit to see how she was this afternoon anyway. Those who are given to praying for folks, her name is Thelma.Angel  That model scene you showed, That is a very cleverly placed diorama! Great modeling, do you know the builder?

On the Youtube link that Lee posted, scroll down the clips list on the RHS, and find The Big and the Small steamtrain.German steam trains. Great sound.  I think you'll enjoy it.

Keith:

Der John.. I was looking at your pics.. each one.. saying.. "yeah~" and "yeah~"  I waiting for you to .. REEEALLY weather it.. lol.
...I know what you mean - especially the black tank cars - they need dullcoat at the very least - they are sitting on top of the doorway module viaduct (where operations came to a halt this morning when life intruded Wink), bugging the whateveritis out of me as the room lights reflect off the top!  I did paint on brownish black spills down from the loading platform on each one - but it doesn't show unless you  know it's there. Check it out - I admit the ADM is pretty clean, but the GATX shows up a bit.
Now John.. I've got to ask you..   "Did you paint those hoses black?.. what detail.!  I can't wait to give it a try.
Dumb luck, as some I painted a black brown - like the aforementioned spills. But I rather fancy that those two particular cars have trip pins that are that colour "out of the box"Black Eye  It's the shape that pleases me most - necessity being the mother of invention, I have to bend those trip pins WAY up to avoid their catching in turnouts, crossings, etc. So the result is, when two such cars are coupled, the hoses look to be about right as far as the curve is concerned. IMHO the "regular" curve of trip pins has more to do with improving the chance of working over an uncoupling ramp than it has with the actual shape of two linked brake line hoses. Since I don't use uncoupling ramps a whole lot, I prefer the "better" shape, and need it anyway to get a pair of cars around the layout! The "regular" configuration ALWAYS snags at a turnout or crossing somewhere!Banged Head

Sawyer:

John, thanks! I'd completely forgotten about the sandpaper. what grit do you use?
...About 150 seems to be good - choose a colour that's to your liking...not easy here as the hardware store has what it has! Of course, the sandpaper is mounted on whatever styrene or card you are using for the roof itself.

Jeff and galaxy our thoughts and prayers are with you - I can't begin to imagine walking in your shoes. I'm also sure the conversation about free-loaders in the system was just that, about free-loaders, people getting benefits when they are perfectly capable of getting a job.  I'm very glad there was Employment Insurance to tide me over in 1997-8; but that's insurance, for which I'd paid premiums for years - a somewhat different matter.

I heard from Dick today. He and Lorraine are in the Grand Canyon area celebrating their 50th. Anniversary! Part of the way by Am Track - so he's "keepin' the faith" Yeah!!

Well, it's that time again. Not much done on the layout today except some switching this morning, which was fun. Also tonight in a break from typing this! I switched the interchange, so those cars aren't on the viaduct any more Keith! Perhaps tomorrow there will be layout time; but with a narrowing window in the weather, I'll be outside working on the house more likely than not. Much still to do there, but little by little it's getting done.  Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Sleep, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

Howdy. All went well today. Turns out I forgot about Mom's doctors appointment, but showed up in plenty of time so all was good there. The doctor said her heart was great and about the only thing he is worried about aside from the severe Ostioperosis (sp?) and the blood pressure fluctuations is her appetite. He prescribed an anti depressant (she gets depressed because all her friends are just about gone now) that has a side effect of sleepiness, and stimulation of appetite.

I did stop at Hobby Lobby and almost left with nothing. They only lowered prices about a dollar on the Hydrocal and the plaster cloth so they still wanted $10 for each. Considerably more than Castle Trains. I did notice the clearance on two WS tunnel portals, the timber like I have and the cut stone. They were marked down from $10 to $6. Usually HL sells at retail and Castle is 20% less than retail. I figured it to be a 40% drop so I bought one each. Came home and discovered MB Klein has them for $6.79, which means Castle would be about the same. I would rather have given the sale to my FLHS had I known at the time. I think HL raised prices to discount off of. Oh well.

Ulrich- Prayers tonight going for your interview tomorrow!!!!! Good luck Hoss!!!

Rob- J.R. just said about everything I could think of. Except, if you get no spark, check to see you have voltage to the coil if you have one, if so, check whatever firing system you have, (not familiar with ATV's) also don't forget to see if you have power going into and coming out of the on off switch. Assuming its not just a dead short switch. Had a similar problem with my generator and it was the on/off switch was always grounded. No start.

Lee- That fella needs some new shorts! Funny how all he got as a warning was a "yoohoo! LaughAnd did you notice no one even batted an eye.Laugh

Quote Rob- "There are those who scam the system for sure, but for people like me and Jeff it is a god send."    Amen to that. It is unfortunate that because of the freeloaders that what is available is not more.

DerJohn is absolutely correct. None of my comments about the freeloaders were directed towards anyone here or even intended to come close. They simply do not apply. We all know the types I'm referring to.

My heart and prayers go out for G and Jeff along with the millions of others who are also suffering, in hopes of a cure and an answer to the problems. We can find money to help other countries but not our own citizens. I have no problem with assisting others, but lets work in our own yard first. After all, the money and resources come from us in the first place. I'd better shut down this potential rant right now.

I think I'll go down and test place my neeew portals. RATS!!! I forgot to stop and get some plasterGrumpy.

Flo just a cup of decafe for me tonight.  I'll go sit in the back booth and catch up on some of the post for a bit.

Hopefully I have everything printed out THAT needs to be printed out for the dinner tomorrow.  Always a lot of last minute things to get done, and I am always glad after the dinner is over and all of us on the committee can relax a bit.

Barry I think asked if anyone gets nailed down here in the States with Welfare fraud....  The answer is Yep!  We got one lady sitting in the Ontario County Jail right now awaiting her trial for just that.  Actually, very risky trying to get away with THAT at least here in this part of NYS.

Hope you all have a good evening!  Prayers for all in need for pain, sorrow, or all else!  Prayers especially for you Ulrich, may your interview be great and a job be ahead for you!

Later!

***Lee(?), a great "look both ways" reminder video. Whew!

Thanks for all the excellent suggestions. Will attack the Ranger Friday and hopefully one of those items will prove to be the problem. Fingers crossed!

Have a good night y'all.

Mike:

Been doing some cleaning n dusting in the train room this afternoon, also a bit of playing with the campground. To me something just isn't right, so whats your thoughts on it.
...Um, what's the large yellow drum thingy?Confused  Also, what era is the layout?  The tent says pre- 70's to me.My 2 cents

You mean in this pic,

It's a D&RG F unit [that's what it had on the box anyway]

The layout's set in the mid to late 50's. So I can run some steam and 1'st gen diesels.

I'm not satisfied with the way it looks, any suggestions???

Good morning all,

SSD,
and all the other social funds provided to those in need are a good thing.  I did have some mental anguish at the former renters in my Aunt’s old house; they owned stuff I could only dream of. 52” plasma TV, 5 fairly new computers, new mini-van, the oldest piece of furniture was 2 years old, color TV in every room, and tons of DVD’s.  The woman was “depressed”, single mom, 6 kids.  The two oldest boys were in prison, the 16 year old daughter was pregnant and already qualified to move into a welfare provided apartment when she turned 17.  The mother was 36, tall and slender and went jogging every morning.  All her bills were paid for…  I’m not complaining about my situation, but there wasn’t anything physically wrong with this woman.  It appeared the medication for her depression was working.  I know I can’t jog the 5 or 6 miles she ran every morning and I can still work every day.

I guess what I’m saying is I’m disappointed the system can give someone with a manageable disability 100% and someone in dire need of assistance 25%.

INCH, Very impressive, I like how the backdrop wraps around the corner.

Last night I used the Micro-Mark two part self vulcanizing mold making rubber to create copies of some scrap gondola loads.  I spent the extra money and used their mold release on the jig and the scrap molds I was coping.  Beautiful molds, I plan on pouring plaster tonight when I get home, pictures hopefully tomorrow of my progress.

I maybe would redo the trees on the one side---the round trees somehow don't look quite right but then that could be my eyesight screwed up---the tent I'd keep as that is in the era---seen some pix up here from the '50's that had that type of tent but overall I'd just redo the trees a mite----

Hello and how's everyone this fine morning?

we are sunny and a high of 26C today----but we will see more rain on our Victoria Day weekend----

I was busy making up some truck weigh scales for the elevators again---

Of course the photos are their usual furrinesses---forgot macro----ggrrrr

Anyway---Chloe, I'll just have a toasted bagel with creamcheese and a coffee please---I'll be at the RC for now--

Good Morning All,

A regular and a blueberry bagel, toasted with a bit of butter please.  Museum last night where I was back on the N gage cleaning and brought all of the nonrunning locos to the shop to see what I can find. Is there a tutorial somewhere on troubleshooting iNvisible scale stuff? I think I might need a scanning electron microscope to do any good. Now where did the optivisor go? For that matter, where did the desk disappear to? J.R.

Good morning all. Suppose to be a great day today, sunny and around 72 or three depending on who you listen too. Like I could tell 1 degree difference anyway. I should go outside and do stuff there. I think I will as I don't have anything planned yet until work at 4.

Inch- Yeah, maaaaybe Barry could be right about the trees, but I was thinking all it needs is a few more and a teeny bit more deadfall. Can't tell if you have one, but don't forget the campfire spot.

Pictures of Barry's layout! Pictures of Barry's layout! Today IS a good day....... me likesThumbs Up.

Yes J.R. there is. In fact it contains everything there is to know about N Scale. Problem is it's only in printed form. Three volumes with about 600 pages, not counting the ones with just photos, each. It's around here somewhere..... let's see, where could that be....? Last time I saw it it was right........ lift your spoon.

Gonna get a move on before the morning slides away.

Have a Great Day!!!!

 Good Afternoon Everyone

well, today was the Day! I had my interview - only one out of several hundred applications. It went well, at least this is my feeling about it. Whether it will end up in getting the job, I will find out next week. I was all calm, was able to give precise answers as to where and why - now I just have to wait. Decision making in governmental offices is not that fast - we all know that Big Smile Getting that job would put an end to some of my worries, not all, though.

Inch - yeah, do something about those trees, they look a little small to me. Add some bigger ones and you will definitively get an improvement.

Barry - great! Pictures of your work - I love it!

Lee - great, but scary video. Impressively demonstrates, why rail fans are not always welcomed.

Angel  for Jeff and Galaxy!

Zoe, make that just some coffee for me please - I have to get rid of some extra pounds I miraculously gained over the last months   Big Smile

Good morning.  Its raining AGAIN, and maybe clearing off later today.

Not much planned for me today.  Maybe go work on the layout a bit, and go by a LHS.

 Barry......I like the progress.

Inch.......I'm not a expert on scenery.  I think it looks good as it is.

  Inch.. looks good to me~

But whatcha have in mind anyways.  I mean.. if you grabbed my by the shirt.. and said.. "You gotta help me man.. I"m desparate.."

"Gheez I dunno Inch.. I can only tell how I am going about it."  " Now isn't Ray.. our 'Artist'.. if you've never seen his work.. well... there ya go"

Ok.. I'm more of an approach to this.. this is what I plan on doing.. and yours if fine.  I dont' know what your getting at.. besides you're the one that gets to look at it.. everyday~  Its always up to you.  I like it.

But since you asked.. let me see if my korny idea brings forth a better idea.   Now you sure you don't want to wait for Ray? .. lol.

Ok.. those red X's represent.. oh a person standing there.. or yourselff breathing on that area.  I would think you would want to look all .. yes.. ALL the way down.. (red going into orange)  .. and the blue.. minor points of view.. always radiating out.

Some of those red X's represent to me~  a path.. to walk.. or look.  And if a branch is in the way.. I might tend to want to bend it up.. or out of my point of view.

Now please don't give me a reply in so many words.. "Thats not what I'm talking about you fooool~" .. lol.

This is meant to have fun.. and to bring about newer better ideas.

Keith
