Good afternoon, since it looks like we're sticking around for a few more days... Cloe? set me up with Barry-sized double cheeseburger 'n fries...with a bucket of Cherry RC Cola please and thank-you.

Welp, so far today, I've contacted a lady about a man with a 2-row corn picker, a guy about an Optimist Club raising funds to fly an avenue full of Old Glory, a couple of ladies about an AmeriCorps group clearing brush around Coralville Lake; and the assistant city administrator of North Liberty about new lightbulbs and an energy audit. *phew*

Now, we wait to see which/how many of these leads hit this week. Later, I have a conference indoor track meet to cover over in Mt. Vernon. Girls today, boys tomorrow. Two pages of photos for THAT

Watching those Norfolk Southern Dash 9's, I got to thinking about how much I would be willing to pay for a cab ride from Conway Yard to Altoona.

Tom, I saw a NS Dash-9 eastbound a few days ago on a UP freight. It was a real nice change to see! I used to think the same thing (cab ride) only from Clinton to Boone, well...Clinton to Ogden (a little ways past the Kate Shelley High Bridge west of Boone)Smile,Wink, & Grin. Oddball me, I wanted it to be on board a SD40-2, on a "junk train" (freight), and preferably one with w**k at Clinton, Beverly, Marshalltown, and Boone.

Speaking of Boone and 40-2's... Uncle Pete has donated an ex-SP SD40-T2 to the Boone and Scenic Valley RR, the bunch who runs the Chinese steam locomotive over the former Ft. Dodge, Des Moines, and Southern. While I appreciate UP donating a locomotive...why oh why couldn't they have donated an ex-CNW unit?? A yellow and green 40-2 would make more sense sitting in Boone than a long nose tunnel motor in dark gray...  Oh well.

The B&SV took an E-unit they got somewhere...and gave it a CNW/UP hybrid paint job: CNW green and yellow on the carbody, with UP silver trucks and red stripe. It just looks...well, a little..."off." But, they also repainted an ex CNW (CGW) TR-2 into a wonderful CGW maroon paint job, and did an Alco something in a blue/gray M&StL scheme. They've got another Alco-someting in a 1950s UP scheme.

Welp, best get back at it... gotta head for the track meet in about an hour or so.

Have a good rest of the day everybody...

HA! UP Disp. 12 just asked a train crew "is your power running as advertised?" Apparently, it is not.

John, this week is our last game, so it's pretty much do or die time. I am concerned about the shoulder, but if it's healed enough to practice I'm playing because like i said, friday is the last game of the season. also, I played for the last maybe 5 minutes friday with it hurt, so I know it can be played on.

Jim, yep, we've been havin fun with the wet stuff. dern, I'm gettin sick of it.

Vincent, yeah man, those shots are amazing. there's one BNSF; the rest are BN SD40-2s, SD45s, GP9s, and F units and the like.

well, been driving this weekend and today and it's pretty dern fun lol.

Ray, is that hotel and restaurant the one on the left hand side of Route 14 when leaving Geneva and heading south? We were thinking about stopping there sometime.

Yep, just beyond the American Legion Building.  Very good restaurant if a bit pricey.  Edgar's is the main restaurant in the old part of the mansion.  Stonecutters is the new "Eclectic Tavern Fare" restaurant in the new part.  They are adding on a "spa" this year......  I have heard mixed reviews of the Rooms for people staying overnight.  They are at least "very romantic".  You can even get a room in the tower.

Chilly, rainy, and dull (as Barry would say) here today.  Showers off and on all day (1/4" over the last 12 hours or so), rain tonight (.5" to 1"), and showers tomorrow.  Temp made it all the way up to 40°F today so far, but is supposed to get a bit warmer later this evening.  And I thing I may be getting a Spring Cold.....  Blah....

Hopefully I can find some time to do some stuff in the train room tonight.  Still have to write a letter and do the rough draft of the Flier for the Spring Meet.

Later!

Good Afternoon/evening

I started this silly thread only a couple of hours ago but honey do things kept popping up----Whistling

Our weatherguessers are still saying that the winds are only going to be at 20-30kmh this evening. Funny. The anemometer at the garage recorded gusts up to 75kmhConfused Oh well--

I'm going to get a few more things done on the layout today----a few more than I thought I would. That makes my dayApprove One of them was getting the lines from the top of the elevators to the grainbins themselves attached and actually managing to get a few platforms together--

Ray: What is with the NMRA thing? I hope no kvetching again---Whistling

Chloe, I'll have a coffee and a SRP please----I'm gonna sit at the RC for now----Approve

Cough, cough, huff, puff, wheeez! Sigh

Well, Good Morning,

that is no way to treat an old man with a heart condition! First, I had a terrible time chasing the Diner while it was moved to the new track, and when I was just about getting my breath back, someone slammed the door shut and it was moved back to the old place.

If I understand the issue correctly, we will have a monthly Diner now and this one will be moved to the new location on April 1st - well, if it must be, then let it be!

Zoe, black tea and toast for me, please. I have to go easy on the caffeine.

No news on the house issue, yet. The people seem to be interested, but need time to think. We expect their decision within this week.  The day before yesterday I had a black-out again, which kept me tied to the bed and the sofa for the last two days. I did play around with some thoughts on how to build the benchwork, which needs to be a fairly precise job. I will use 12mm MDF board, as this is a lot cheaper than lumber.

This is how it will (shall) look like:

I have finished the bill of materials, but need to double check all the dimensions, before I order the parts.

Have a good day!

ConfusedWhistling

I went by here earlier and you guys moved it on me---I come through later and it is back here---I thought I was seeing things------Whistling

Good Morning---well, sort of----Whistling

Very very dull this morning. Have all the lights on right now just to see...

We had an interesting night ---we had the phonelines---just the phonelines(land, cell and cordless) go off on 2 seperate occasions. I know the winds were strong but--only the phones here did the flicker off routine---nothing elseConfused Most odd---

Today I'll be doing some internet hunting--I'm building a computer for a couple of people who wanted something built but could not find anyone to do it for them---so I got the job---another thing to doLaugh It's for a client that is learning some stuff on computers so we're going to do this together---I just got to find the parts right now. Then it'll be off to the trainroom and some cleaning up from last night's building stuff---

Flo--I'll just have a coffee and a bran muffin please--heated with butter as well please---I'll be at the RCSmile

Good morning all. Loaded hash brown potatoes please. Salsa and a cup of coffee thank you.

Bit-o-cornfusion round these here parts I see. Get Ulrich one of those energy drinks please. He looks pooped. Luckily, I was sitting on the vestibule peaking in the window every time it moved so no discomfort or confusion for me. First time for everything.

Jeff- Glad to hear you feel your leg and foot are improving. Shoot, NO! Figure of speech! ( I forgot he's packin' heavy arty now) I need to write things down and I have no drugs in me at all.

Johnboy- I agree with you. With the exception of a few things, OSB is my "plywood" of choice. If my living room floor is still fine after all these years with furniture and people/children traffic, I suppose it will work fine for my railroad.

Bottle stoppers. The ones I recall we had were metal and would slide on the ridge of the mouth of the bottle. They had a disk attached to a screw knob you would tighten agay-nst thee rimmmma. Still have one, (now to find it) don't have much use for it anymore, hate to get rid of it thoughWhistling.

Barry must be on a diet. Notice his portions are smaller. Better for his ole ticker anyway.

Robby- Nice job on the police station.

Tom(PA)- Never had an Exactrail car in my hands before. I hear they are as well detailed as the ads show.

WHAT IS THIS COUNTRY COMING TOO!!!! WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE!!! CAN THEY REALLY BE THAT IGNORA ........ Oh Ulrich you may want to stay where you are for a bitAngry.

Supposed to get to 65 degrees today and I want to get a few things done on the old railroad before the weather gets to where I need to be outside. But I could be outside today and get a jump start on things. Now for me, jump start on things translates " get started on time" to most folks. Should prove to be interesting to see what I doLaugh.

Have a Great Day!!!

Good morning.  Its a bit rainy, but it might clear up later.

Not to much planned today.  Maybe go down into the basement and finish up the area around the police station and supermarket.  I poured some "road" down and hopefully its dry.  Maybe I can paint it, and add some grass, etc...

I also have to go to the post office and mail out the hoppers.  It was $12 for him to mail them to me from Canada, hopefully it will be about the same for me!!

Hope everybody has a good morning.

Good morning. It's 40 and mostly cloudy. The high will be in the low 70's and it will be mostly sunny.

Other than a doctors appointment at noon I have nothing going on today. I may get a chance to go through the new freight cars I got and decide which ones I'll be keeping. The others will be traded off or given away as whatever the case may be. I also have to get the upcoming outgoing deliveries set up. This will require the finding of addresses and suitable packaging material. For large deliveries I can simply reuse the medium size boxes I have.

I've been in the basement most of the morning working on my middle table.  Its going to be the main part of my town.  I still gotta add a few more buildings, and other items.

So.................I thought I would show some pictures.  I painted and weathered the road.  I also added some lines to the road.  Of course I don't like how they came out.  I also added some grass and bushes.  MUCH more detail work to do!!

Ah.......  What time is it?  Oh!  Afternoon everyone!

[edit]  Looks like late lunch and afternoon snacks are on me, so order up folks!

Didn't get in here this morning as I need to go get me haircut.  had to get over to what used to be the Village of Seneca Falls, now called the Town of Seneca Falls, and which may become the hamlet of Bedford Falls......... at some time in the future where my barber is located.  While I was there I decided to have him cut all of them. Whistling

Anyway it is a cold, rainy, dull day here in the Finger Lakes today.  Kind of icky so to speak.  So I will remain indoors the rest of today and get some needed things accomplished (I hope).

While driving through downtown Geneva on my way to Seneca Falls, some idiot opened the driver side door on his car right in front of me!  I was all of 15' from him doing about 25MPH.  I swung the wheel way over to left and thankfully the oversteering in my Yaris moved the car over quick!  May have missed his door by an inch... Maybe!  Of course THAT meant I was now headed straight into the side of a car parked on the other side of the two lane street!  Quick threw thew the wheel over to the right enough to miss the car and went back into my own lane.  If I had been driving the Truck, I would have taken off the guys door and probably yanked him out of his car.....  Good test for the old heart, sure had some adrenaline pumping!!!ShockGrumpy

Just mailed out a couple of letters to new members of my NMRA Division.  At least they will know I know they exist.......  I really need to find someone in my division to be the "Member Aid" person.  As it stands now I am THE person for all needs for info, planning, etc.

Robby your roads look good to me.  Lucky on the SLOW back in 1925 they only had dirt/gravel roads (OK some brick streets in town, but I'll deal with THAT later...).

OK, better get moving!

Well, looks like it got a little interesting around here this morning: moving, moving back... jiggity-jig. It really doesn't matter to me when the Diner moves...costs the same either way! Mischief

100% full agreement mega-dittos!

I've got the WAMAC Conference Boys Indoor Track Meet this afternoon... ended up with 24 edited/cropped/adjusted/ready for print photos (12 for each paper/school) for THAT from yesterday's WAMAC Conference Girls Indoor Track Meet...she'll be happy.  She'll also get a personality profile on a teen girl from Ely trying to make it as a photographer, and a new business feature on a Solon bakery. Friday will be a good day for THAT. Apparently, the President is coming to Iowa City on Thursday... I'll let THAT or "The Other Guy" go cover the event. I'm hoping for a controlled burn in the Coralville Lake vicinity on Thursday. AmeriCorps' NCCC is spending a month out there clearing brush, doing burning...more interesting, in my opinion.

Have a good day!

 Thanks for the comments!!!

I know a few sections are a different color (road/parking lot wise).  That's true at certain places.  I guess it does look real.  I did add a few people since these pictures.  The scenes look more real.   I also went to a LHS and found a few people (police), and I will see about getting them.  Plus one is eating a doughnut Big Smile.

Todd......I didn't like the plastic look either.  What I did was pour some road mix over the edge of the plastic building (sidewalk/parking/etc...)  Then after that dried I weathered it up just a bit.  I used black powder, and a make-up sponge.   That kinda blended in the plastic.  Now you don't even see the edge.

Keith........Hopefully some more buildings, cars, people, lights, etc.....   I still wanna add some more detail work to the area.  I also have the buildings you gave me, and they will be used on another table.  I haven't even touched that table yet.    I do have a siding I'm going to use on that middle table.  Probably for a smaller cement plant.

Ray....Roads are hard to do, well I think they are.  I add black powder on the parts of the road, and sometimes it gets over done.  That's when the sponge comes into play.   Dirt roads are probably easier to do.   The problem for me would be trying to find some dirt roads.

I've got all the stuff I'll be sending out packed up. Two of the packages are for members on the forum. One small box and one big box. They'll be going out after the 31st.

Got the doc appointment wrapped up. He says the wound on the right foot is healed and those on the left are looking better. I have to go back tomorrow morning to have blood drawn so they can know what my low point on Vancomycin is. A Home Health nurse will come out at noon to draw blood for the Vancomycin peak test. And some people wonder why Wednesday is just about the least liked day of my week.

Can't find the camera. Again. FIRST scratch built whith wood today. I started my bridge! I got one abutment and the two wings done, or constructed. Now I need to stain and try, I say again, try to make the look realistic. er. I guess I'll have to lay the plaste and make the gully look like a gully rather than a cut out in the foam before attaching it. Gotta find that camera.

Great news Jeff. I hope the doc reports keep coming in like that. I know feet are a major concern for diabetics and it gets us quite worried when you have problems with them.

Ya know, for some reason, I have a hankerin' for corn and......jamTongue.

Hello everybody ...

Tomorrow, I'm northbound to Michigan. Shelley is already there with the new grandson. I'm taking the truck because, I'll be stopping in Cincinnati on the return trip for some under-the-layout storage cabinets our son built for me. See some grandkids there, too.

It's been busy here, and not any layout time for me this week.

Looks like there was some confusion here. Are we now set to move on April 1?

Jeff, I hope those feet are all better before the ladies start chasing you in the diner again.

Evening all. Chloe, I'll take an RBF, thanks.

Practice today was cancelled, and that's not a bad thing. I haven't been feeling too hot all day, and I was probably gonna end up skipping it anyways. Dunno about school tomorrow, though.

I hear that NJT now has ALP-46As 4630-4633 at the MMC. The 4629 and 4630 arrived in December, and 29 has been out testing in Pueblo, and 30 has apparently been out doing some testing on the Morris & Essex, with a Comet III cab (could be the last time one of those is used on Transit) and some Comet IVs. 4634 and 4635 are in Port Elizabeth awaiting pickup. 4636 and 4637 are in transit, on a boat somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic. Sam, have you seen these guys yet, or have you not really been past/to the MMC that much?

Well, I gots me a bit of catching up to do, so I guess I'll do that for a while.

Greetings everyone,

I wanted to give you an update on the suggestion I proposed the other day.

Just to be on the safe side I double-checked with Wade about the diner moves becoming a "monthly" event rather than remaining at its current 50-page limit.  I told Wade that, by my calculations, the maximum length a Diner thread would likely grow to would be 60 - 65 pages in a 31-day month, which he was fine with.

So, given the general consensus from folks so far about the idea:

  • Diner changes will now be on the 1st of every month.
  • The first patron to walk in on the 1st is free to open up the new diner.
  • If you do open the new diner, please include the Month/Year in the title (e.g. Elliot's Diner - April 2010) and place a sign in the old diner window to direct others to the new "location"
  • One of the mods will eventually get around to locking up the old diner.

I hope that all makes sense.  Thanks.

Tom

I haven't seen one personally, but I have a new special instruction that limits the MAS (Maximum Allowable Speed) to 90 MPH, but that is "usual" with new equipment.  They like to keep the speeds down until testing is complete and they KNOW it can handle the higher speeds without issues.  They should probably be in passenger service within 6-8 months if I had to guess... but THAT is just what it is, a guess.

Tstage- Thanks for the clarification!   We shall see how April 1st goes!?!?

Well, I am two days into qualifying from Morris Int. to 30th St Station...  Having a good time learning the territory.  Some of the SEPTA engineers are rather knowledgeable, while others don't really say much beyond calling signals... Just have to get as much info out of the talkative ones as possible and put it to good use!

Well, I am currently in the process of searching out an RSD4/5 for my NH&I roster...  The NH&I website claims they owned an RS-3 as the first ever diesel on property, but upon closer inspection, it's an RSD-4/5!  What had me confused for a while was the fact that every time I searched for a model of the RS-3 it only had 4 axles!  The NH&I diesel has SIX!  I finally got the answer to my self imposed ignorant riddle when I searched on my FLHS' website www.linsjunction.com and the description told me what I needed to know!  So I am now attempting to find the closest one to my paint scheme to allow me to repaint without having to strip it down to the bare shell!

We shall see.

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

Just catching up from page 49 on...

DerJohn- Ahahahah my chem teacher said not to speak of what goes on in our class...
Well, not really that way. She tells some, uh, interesting (and somewhat embarrassing) stories that she prefers we don't share. She told us one, and for the past week, I've been making fun of her for it, and she didn't even know! I told her today, and she made me leave the room! Big Smile

Ulrich, sorry to hear about your health acting up again Angel

EDIT: Whoops, accidentally hit the post button. Continuing...

Robby, roads look great!

Ray, THAT sounds like a close one! Good thing you were able to get around it!

Jeff, glad to hear it seems you're doing better

Tom, that sounds great! I think this new system will be much more convenient, IMHO.

Sam, yeah, I heard about the MAS of 90 on THAT not-to-be-named forum (don't know if you know which one I mean) (the one where I get all my inside info), and they'll get the full 125 upon approval from Pueblo.
Are they also going to raise the MAS of the MLs to 125? Cause having locos capable of 125 but cars only capable of 100 is kinda useless...
One more thing. I heard that while 4630 was testing on the M&E recently, it had a few issues. Do you know if there's any truth to this?

Well, I think that just about does it. Night all.

Good evening folks: A gale is raging, but the rain it's bringing is welcome. A bit too much wind noise for peaceful contemplation of what to do next on the layout. LOL. No mrr time today anyway, as we are now deep into Tax Time. Did my MIL's Monday, which is no biggy.  The rather more complex situation of our own taxes always involves more work than I prefer! So I missed the move-that-never-was by being AWOL! Big Smile

Lee: Dorothy certainly has courage! Hope she improves steadily on the health front. Angel

I remember the bottle stoppers that you pushed into the bottle and it had a plunger to keep the pop from going flat.  That was a few years ago...
We had the glass stoppered pop bottles at school, the kind with a rubber gasket and a wire spring clip thing to re-seal them, Don't ask me how I know that if you mix Calcium Carbide in warm water in one of those and seal it, you have to run before the acetylene generated spontaneously explodes; scattering glass moderately dangerously. Whistling...Ah! Those were the days!

Robby: Great roof vents on the police station! Were those in the kit, or did you add them?  That landscape sure takes shape in a hurry - looking good!Thumbs Up

Ulrich: Sorry to hear about your continuing health concerns.

Indian railroading.
...like this perhaps?   How are the angled joints on the layout benchwork going to be constructed?

Jeff:

I cut the gun carriage away from the base of the railgun frame. Maybe I can make some kind of heavy duty flat car from this.
....do you re-call that outfit for moving nuclear materials that was discussed in an older Diner, or perhaps the last Coffee Shop?  Good news on the feet - that's some relief anyway, even if the blood suckers won't leave you alone.

Todd:

(re OSB) I suppose it will work fine for my railroad.
...is the surface smooth enough ? has always been my question.  It looks rough with those flakes.

f-unit: to the Diner. Diet or not, it's a great place to be. What are your mrr / railfan plans, interests?

Ray:

(by Joe) Ray, THAT sounds like a close one! Good thing you were able to get around it!

Bed time again - I guess sleep may be a tad fitful if t his wind noise keeps up all night. So, goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

She tells some, uh, interesting (and somewhat embarrassing) stories that she prefers we don't share.

Sounds like the maniac (in a good way!) who taught my Chemistry of Hazardous Materials course back in '96. He LOVED HAZ-MAT. He also had (has) a very "colorful" vocabularyMischief which in and of itself was worth the price of admission!!! He had some stories from HAZMAT incidents about on par (I would imagine) with your teacher. Then, there was the goof-ball who taught my first HAZMAT Operations class. He decided to do some demonstrations out back of the fire station... with "interesting" results including a bit more "bang for the buck" than anticipated!

Personally, chemistry and I never got along. What little I retained from high school was promptly dissolved in the Chem. of HAZMAT class. Once we got out of "simple salts," I was well and truly...screwed. The ONLY thing I remember is "tri-nitro-toluene" TNT.

JEFF: GLAD to hear of the improvement in your feet, I echo the concerns for your continued health and well-being.

I've been making fun of her for it, and she didn't even know! I told her today, and she made me leave the room!

I had a priest for a teacher in high school...drew a cartoon of him sitting cross-legged, levitating, and chanting "OM   OM    OM" since we'd just covered Hindu's or something like THAT in Comparative Religions. I showed it to a classmate, who burst-out laughing. Fr. Thoman approached, confiscated the drawing...and I saw my life passing before my eyes. He started laughing and tacked it up on the bulletin board by his desk!  Fr. Thoman is/was one of "the good guys." In fact, him and Fr. Wilgenbusch (the other priest we had) treated a buddy and me to a steak dinner just before we graduated; a token of appreciation for all the volunteer hours we'd both put in not only setting up for all-school Masses, but our hours w**ing behind the scenes for the drama dept.

Welp... back at it, I've got 165 photos to edit down, sort by school (Solon in one folder, Clear Creek Amana in another), select about a dozen each; crop, color-correct/lighten, and process into ready-to-print .eps format.

Have a good'un...

Evening alk just stoppjng in for a RBF.  Been pretty busy working both jobs and all.  I do have good news from the job front.  I have been promoted at Advance, now going to be a full-timer, with a raise, benefits, and also be bonus elidgable.  Only downside to it is less hours to be with the family and I have to put down working for the shop that I started with about 3 weeks ago.

Robby, great looking pictures, can't wait to see what you do next.

Jeff, glad to hear that your feet are doing well.

Ulrich, prayers and well-wishes for your continued health and that your house sells.  I'm sure that would definitely assist with easing the strain on your heart and maybe even help ease your wallet.

Welp that's about it for me, going to be going to bed soon, first will catch up on things around here first, I just got caught up on the diner, now's time for the rest.

And it appears that I've got the TOP, so y'all eat up!!!
