I've got the old computer equipment put away and the non-functional stuff will be put out for collection Monday night. It will be collected Tuesday morning.

Evenin' Folks!

OMG!  It's awful!  Just awful!!!  Today the entire top of Bare mountain blew off in a forceful eruption.  Locals think there must have been some giant volcanic action from a caldera formed millions of years ago and unknown to the good citizens of Hopewell and surrounding villages.  Said Farmer Albert Cooley in the farm just over in the next Dale, "bah golly it were sumpin'.  Nevah done saw nutin' lahk it befoe...  Jus' hope my still..... er, ah, the plant fer makin' the recipe ain't been takin' with it!"  Others were amazed that there was almost no damage to outlying areas.  It seems the top of the mountain came off cleanly and was last seen flying over the city of Kanandaqua towards the nether regions of the back workroom.  "I'm so sorry, Uncle Albert..."

A couple before:

And a couple after:

I am still playing around with the new design and trying to find photos of the buildings and equipment at old Limestone Quarries.

Turns out both the turnouts on the hill off the mainline were #4s so both will be replaced with hand built #6 using Fastracks jigs (as soon as I spend the $$ for the jigs....).

Flo I think I'll have my evening cup of decafe and go sit in the back booth for a bit to unwind.

Hope all of you have a great evening!

Evening. Slice of Dutch Apple PIE please and a glass of milk.

J.R.- Yes it is because of the transition. Something I have yet to master. However, the only car so far, (he he. Rhymes) that has an issue is the baggage car for the AMTRAK. The coupler is bent high on the one end and that is the end I have attached to the good ol' F40PH at NMRA standards. The other cars stay connected just fine even the pickiest one the Great  Dome does fine. Some are close, but that is because they are all old E-bay buys and most couplers are at slightly different hights but were not a real big issue on flat terrain as I had before. I have only done things to them as needed to make them run. Such as metal wheels if they were out of guage. A quick replacement of a coupler here and there, but none have been gone through as they should to make them reliable. I have had occasional uncoupling problems on curves with them before, I just haven't really got down and done what I should. I believe I will now. Your suggestion about the transition, however, is being strongly considered for any future possible problems though.

Ray- Please tell me the Bridge to Nowhere is....... somewhere.

Hi folks... just wanted to post a pic ..

A couple of weeks ago.. we had a cold snap.  The whole house was cold,  and you all know I have a blind cat.

I know its kinda of mean.. but I've taken her to my bedroom.. and it takes her about two hours to get back to the living room.  She stares for an 1/2 hour.. the creeps along.  She'd be bored if I didn't~ .. so would I!

But anyways.. we had this cold snap.. the wind blowing..  it just blows the warmth right out of the house.  Well this blind cat of mine.. she found her way.. onto the warmth of the cable box.. and as you can see...

she is in love with this thing.  I'm surprised she can fit on it.

 Good Morning,

a sunny day today, with temperatures around 50 F, going up to 68 F early afternoon. I am just back from our "old" house, clearing the last bits out, that Petra wanted to keep - mainly garden stuff we will most likely not use again. Well, we still have that room in the attic, which once was supposed to turn into my train room. Seeing the house all vacant makes it hard to believe, that this was once our home. It is always like someone stabbing right into my heart. Our flat is still not my home yet, although Petra is trying to do her utmost to make it as "gemütlich" as she can. It is days like today, that make me feel helpless and depressed.

Hi Zoe, I´ll just have a coffee  and sit down at the RC for while.

The postman did not bring my loco, but I expect it now any day to come. Should cheer me up a little. Before I can start to build my litlle "shunting" layout, I have to finish the room and get a new wardrobe, as Christian wants to have the one I now use. That is an extra expense I did not calculate with, but I can´t blame him. He is also moving into a new place and as it was his, he will get it. As a student, he has even less than we have.

The old ticker is acting up more and more, which adds to my worries. Will there be brighter days again?

Robby P. - I like the picture of your layout. Those streets just look fantastic. You are a man of many a talent!

Ray - was Bare Mountain a volcano, just like Mt. St. Helens? I am looking forward to seeing pictures of the replacement.

Todd - your progress is amazing!

Keith - that´s a lovely picture of your kitty!

Barry - come to think of it, how about posting some pics of your layout?

Well, I must be off - have a good day!

Btw, any news from Tom and Jim?

Good morning All,

A regular to go please. the next couple of days wll be spent cleaning the shop for the tech seminarwe're hosting Saturday for the Vintage Sports Car Club. We've had over a year to move in and we're still putting stuff away from the move and the usual aftermath of rush jobs. Yech!

Ulrich - hope your loco shows up soon. It should be an inspiration. What track/turnouts/code rail are you planning on when you start on the track? How about rolling stock? In the 50's there was still a lot of passenger traffic in England along with the usual bulk shipments and freight cars.

Jerry - nice scene. the car could use a little weathering though. By the time I'd get my hands on one up here in New England it would usually be a bit rusty/dented/generally used up. I love the A-frame engine hoist - nice touch.

Jeff - I'm glad someone can recycle that old puter stuff. I can't deal with it and usually just bring the smoldering rubble to the local guy to trade in on the next one. Less clutter that way. LOL.

Ray - Thats some impressive hole you created! Did you borrow Jerrys' engine hoist to crane it off? Sorry to see the bridge to nowhere gone but with a quarry going in there may be a need to bridge an earlier excavation area with a nice wooden trestle, no? So inquiring minds want to know - did you hum Jimmy Buffets "I don't know where I'm a gonna go when the vocano blows" as you removed the hill?

well gotta go harass other people in the shop now.  Catch y'all later.   J.R.

Good morning all. Bowl of New England Clam Chowda and some good crusty bread and some coffee. Just sounds good. Rainy day today. High is to be about 47 so it'll be chilly.

Doubt if any train time for the next couple of days. Grocery shopping and errands for Mom, the work. Possibly I may have a few moments to whip into Castle Trains to check for the bridge I need, but that's not looking promising.

Jerry- Nice scene! Will that be part of the layout? Or something you were just piddling around with. I've often thought about doing little scenes like that on the bench myself to add to the layout later

Ulrich- I think I seen Tom around the yard, Jim no and also PC hasn't popped in to say He and the wife are fine.

YA HEAR THAT PC? HOW"S THE WIFE DOING?????!!! We have PIIIIIIIIEEEEE! ( I'll just set this Banana Cream pie right here by the counter. Unsecured it shouldn't last long. As bait, that usually brings in the great pie thief. Hopefully we will catch a glimpse of this rare fellow and see how he is doing)

Have a Great Day!!!

 Good Afternoon,

Chloe, I´ll go for that pie that Todd has left here at the RC - and a coffee in my LNER mug.

It may only be my impression, but the activity here in the forum has slowed down a bit. Also there are some of the more frequent posters absent. I hope I don´t have to get worried Confused

J.R. - my layout is designed for a 2 train operation, one will be a freight train, consisting of those 2-axle, short-wheel base "vans", the other one being a passenger train, maybe a Railbus or an early DMU. The loco will be heading the freight train mainly, as that was the kind of service she did at the end of her life in the 1980´s, which happens to be the period I will be modeling - BR´s "blue phase", so to speak. I´ll be using either Peco code 100 or code 75 track - not yet decided.

I really have itchy fingers to get started, but somehow that house business paralyzes me, sucks out all the energy from me. Whatever will be - please let it happen fast now, so I can come back on track!

Jerry - I like that shady mechanic!

Stay safe!

Sir Madog
Ray - was Bare Mountain a volcano, just like Mt. St. Helens? I am looking forward to seeing pictures of the replacement.

mmmm--I started wondering maybe that there was a heat source under it like a batholith maybe? It looks like it blowed up real good!!

Sir Madog
Barry - come to think of it, how about posting some pics of your layout?

Any photo I have of my layout looks all furry!! It is a little like looking at fog---vague shapes lurk therein--

Our weatherguessers are giving us a current temperature of 6C right now going to 2C by the afternoon then to the low of -11C tonight----we'll see 2C for a high tomorrowSigh

I'm going to have to get another set of hopper cars to model this---

Which was with this

I have to dig up some info on this little plant---

Flo--I'll have a coffee and some toast with blueberry jam please---I'll be at the RC looking at this a little moreWhistling

Mornin' all.

Gimme your biggest cuppa coffee - black. I'll have two fried eggs over easy and crunchy bacon. Mmmm, and a butter croissant.

For the first time in two and a half weeks, it's icy this mornig. Naturally after this length of time, everyone's forgotten how to drive in winter, so there were some near-misses on the way to work today.

Good morning. It's 54 and mostly cloudy. The high will be in the low 70's with a 30% chance of thunderstorms.

I'll be taking it easy today. After the high-paced (for me) activity yesterday procuring the old Apple IIe computer for spare parts I was fairly well worn out. I'm expecting a delivery of antibiotics from the pharmacy. That will probably be the high point of my day. I also have two new cylindrical grain hoppers (heritage fund) coming from Bachmann. They should arrive in about a week.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe a hot bowl of oatmeal, brown sugar, and a cup of dark roast in a FGLK mug would do nicely this morning.  I'll be at the Rivet Counter for a bit.

Currently 45°F under cloudy skies here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  High will only be around 50°F and we will see a few scattered showers today as well.

I have several errands I have to do today.  Have to take a few things over to the High School to the Vocal Teacher, stop and do some banking for the MLK Committee, buy stamps for the invitations for our Scholarship Dinner, Get some $$ (pictures of dead presidents) to stuff in my wallet for the train show this Sunday, and stuff like that.  Yesterday I finally called the Podiatrist's office to have my feet checked out.  It has been a while since I was there.  The doctor I saw last time I was there was a young woman who since that time moved out and opened her own office in a community near here, and was tragically killed in an automobile accident a few years ago.....  I figured I would have to start from scratch to get back into the office.  They still had me in their computer!  Was last seen in 1999.....  Yep, been a while!  Have an appointment for this coming Monday.

Ulrich, not a volcano.  Or, at least, it wasn't intended to be a volcano, just a logged out hill like many over in the Bristol Hills surrounding Canandaigua Lake.  The name is a pun on Bare Hill (ancestral home of the Seneca Nation) and Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain".  Bare hill is now protected against development.  A few years back some contractor wanted to put a housing development right on top of the site.  Very little grows up there as it is mostly exposed bedrock (either granite or limestone, the later I think).  You can read it here.

J.R. - ROFL!  No, it took two huge giants to move the section.  My son and I.  Not really THAT heavy, but just awkward to handle and I didn't want to damage the rest of the area.  Only damage I see is that my son knocked down a line pole near the edge of the far side.  The "Bridge to Nowhere" has been preserved for future posterity......Whistling  Probably will not be added to the rebuild, but may find its way into a diorama of some kind.

Barry, Batholith???Confused  Love the photos!  I am surprised you didn't order the scrambled egg special this morning......???

Best get moving.  Lots to get done!

Later!

Front door of diner flies open with a rush of air.  A blurr is seen passing through the doorway, down the main aisle passed the Rivet Counter, and in that instantaneous flash, the banana pie has disappeared!

Hello friends!  What's that Chloe? I have PIE on my face???  Now how could THAT have gotten there???

Yes, PC has trained me in the ways of the P.I.E.S. (Pies Instantly Extricated Silently)  But since you now know about the orginazation, I will have to terminate you!

Where has he been?  I hope all is well in his neck of the woods!?

Barry- when you find out more about THAT plant, please pass it on!?  I would be interested in adding it to my trackplan!!!

Well, I am glad to see that we are still in one place!  Glad a certain someone talked his way out of an FRA rules violation!  How did you get away with occupying a main track without the dispatchers permission???  The diner doesn't seem to have taken any damage in the quick move back and forth?!!

Hope all are well as they read this post!  Prayers for all in need!  (Which anymore is all of us, isn't it! Lol)

Ulrich- Brighter days lay ahead, just over the horizon!  We will all look back on these days as learning experiences, with a few bumps and bruises, both in the "real" and "virtual" worlds!  Just hang in there friend!  We will be praying for you!

Well, I'll be sitting at the RC for a while... Chloe, may I please have a slice of Pecan Pie and a RBF?  Thank you!  YES, I will be replacing the Banana Pie so as to reset the "trap" for PC!

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

Time to triple lock the pie vault! Otherwise the rest of us will get nothing. While I can't eat most types of pie I do enjoy the sugar free variety from time to time.

Evening all, just catching up from the last couple pages...

Todd, looks like some great progress on the layout!

Barry, that's a neat plant!

Thanks Chris! I would still be using my old Google one, but they deactivated my account. Dunno why they did THAT...

Ray, very sorry to hear about your mountain blowing up... Smile I hope the Bridge to Nowhere will eventually go, I guess, somewhere.

Keith, that's funny! My cat would probably be way too big for that.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Been doing some thinking about my MRR. Not specifically layout related, but things about Tri State Rail in general. Ya know, reasonable excuses to buy things you don't really need. For example, I would like a RS1, although I have no reason for it. But I have explanations for them.

I'll explain more later once I dispose of the ideas that make no sense at all, and come up with better excuses.

Later!

Hello

I think I got at least part of the issue solved about the plant. It is connected with some sort of a local plastic pellet processor that is running the operation. The cylindrical hoppers are storing varying grades of raw material for the processor--as well as the vertical holding tanks. Now. All I need to find out is just whether or not the spur behind the thing is actually still connected to anything---I did see there were hoppers in back but cannot see the trucks(?)

'Spring' is busy headbutting me-----

Chloe, I'll have a nice bowl of chile---no not the bathgon!! ---sheeesh!---and a small RBF please---KERRRSSSPPLLIIISSCCHH!!!-------sigh-----Chocolate cream pie---my favorite---too bad it's not on a plate----I'll just have a spatula please---I'm going to the corner booth---at least I can see the pies flying here----Sigh

Evenin' folks!

Flo I'll have a cup of decafe and maybe a slice of the Boston Cream pie...  I'll go sit in the back by the stove.  Hope it is lit tonight.  Gonna get cold here in the Finger Lakes tonight and stay THAT way tomorrow.

For those of you who wish to know what it was I removed from the top of Bare Mountain, I took a couple photos of it sitting in the workshop.  (For those of you who don't want to know, just don't look......Whistling)

I was able to save the base of the engine house which will still end up on top of Bare Mountain, but possibly not in the same place.  There wasn't enough room to have good clearance where it was to go anyway.   (Measure twice....  Glue once.....)

If any of you know where I can find photos of limestone quarry buildings from the early 1900's please direct me to them.  I have done several days worth of research and have found only one old photo.  Not a great one either.

Got several important things done today including a questionnaire/survey for my NMRA Division membership.  Just waiting for the input of some of my board members before I print it and send it out along with the flier for the upcoming Spring Meet.

Hope all of you are having a great evening!

(EDIT: Please let the record show that I did NOT start a pie fight, I only stealthily swiped the banana pie that was on the counter, which was then replaced less than 20 minutes later!  I am INNOCENT of the charges of "Conspiracy to Use Pies of Mass Destruction"!!!)

Watch out, as I had to explain the P.I.E.S.  (See earlier post for more details to help the memory... hint hint nudge nudge, know-what-I-mean! know-what-I-mean! Say-no-more! Say-no-more! Oy! Oy! Wohl! Wohl!)

We were waitin' for ya!  Sorry I had to replace the Banana Pie that was set out as bait for you... Whups, I let that slip too.... Sorry!

How's the wifey doing?  All is well at your end I pray?

Well, I'll have to catch up tomorrow as it is fast closing in on my beddy-by time!

Ray: There was a quarry site that had a bunch of photos from the 1900-1920's or thereabouts. I'm trying to find it again. Nuts. One site may be of some use----SHORPY---it's a pictorial archive---

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a cup of hot cocoa, please, with those little marshmallows on the top. Thanks!

To borrow the words of Mark Twain (I believe it was...) rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Smile,Wink, & Grin Just super busy at the office this week - haven't got out for lunch yet, hoping to be able to do that tomorrow. Have been out, but only to assess someone each time. (dang w**k is getting in the way of getting on here, MRR'ing and other fun stuff!) Grumpy

Sir Madog
The old ticker is acting up more and more, which adds to my worries. Will there be brighter days again?

Ulrich: the short answer? - YES! Hard part right now, is trusting that they are still on the way, though they have not yet arrived. Kinda like waiting for your loco, in a way - having faith that it IS coming...SmileThumbs UpAngel

Robby, [ditto] about your roads - love 'em! What'd you use for your stripes? They look a little worn on the stripes, so I was curious what you did for that effect...

Keith, on your 'warming up' kitten, I'd bet he/she's getting some heat from the cable box and the other box (above/below it - wasn't sure which of the two was that actual cable box). Cats love about any heat source when it's cool out.

Ray, I'm looking forward to seeing your quarry once you get it going. Did you see the older pics of our club's quarry (which was mostly squarish in shape)? And my vote would be for you to find some place for the Bridge to Nowhere to be re-instated, if anyone's counting. Whistling

Barry, THAT plant is a curious-looking thing - any clue what it was for? Not sure if I connect the way it's set up with a plastic pellet something-or-other, but then again, I'm no expert on those. Oops

Been wondering about where BridgeTom, PC, and another coupla Diners have been. I'm guessing PC's been busy with the 'w' thing during the days, but not sure if he's getting that much overtime in the evenings... Wouldn't think he could be getting that much time. I do know that Garry is either on the way, or in Michigan, and will likely be stopping by to wake up Duke from one of his naps.Zzz

Well, rather than stay up past closing time here, I'll get this posted before you all get the bloodhounds out for me. Now we may need 'em to go hunting the other Diners.Cowboy

Prayers are continuing for those in need of healing (and good to hear about some of you who are healing up some), comfort, a good evening's rest, and any other unspoken needs. AngelAngel

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good evening. Chocolate cream pie please. Just a piece. I see some on the wall and it looks pretty good.

(looks around) Hm. I see the Banana Cream PIE is gone, and the PIE vault is triple locked. PC was here I take it. No mention of problems so I'm taking that as a good thing.

As suspected no railroad work today, and there will be none tomorrow as it's our last fish fry for the year. Weather tomorrow is supposed to be fairly good. Today was cold and rainy.

I did go down and stare at the empire and realized I had to do something, but I can't remember what it is.

Barry- Now the pictures I take are not very good either. Something about that basement I guess, and no one has complained yet. (At least out loud anywayWhistling) We are all dying to see what's going on in your little world.

PC- Jeff just about summed it up. Lotsa stuff but heck if I can remember anything. Hows the wifes diet going? I lost the link to her Youtube thing. Is she still doing it? Put it up again next time your in if you happen to think about it. I'm assuming you've had no time for the railroad. Took mine down and am rebuilding.

Ray- Do you have anything between your hidden track and the floor? I noticed you have a stretch or two that is like what I have on one. Open. Makes me kind of nervous even though the train of 80 footers will free fall down at breakneck speed without derailng I found out when the loco came loose, it‘s on a curve.

Welp, (licking the absolutely delicious remains of the chocolate pie from my lips) best head off to bed, big busy day tomorrow. BRRRAAAAAPPPP. THAT was NOT me!!!! Stupid vinyl seats.

Prayers for those in need.

OK, so lets see if I've got this right.........

The diner is now monthly.

Sam is straight up guilty.

And my family update shows that all is well on the homefront.

Got it!
