Mornin' everyone!

Zoe just a butter rum muffin and lots of dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug for me.  I'll go sit in my seat at the Rivet Counter.

OK, All together now with Tom at the piano....  On 4.  1, 2, 3, 4....

"Barry's been workin' on the Railroad
All the live long day......."

Jeffrey glad you are home and hopefully on the mend.  Sounds like a very unenjoyable week!  Take care of yourself.

Ulrich, very glad to hear you will getting out of that place soon.  Hopwfully it will mean a new start on so many things in life for both you and Petra.  Don't forget to have her ship some of that wonderful Strudel over to the diner for us.  Take care!

Der I hope that the new insulin works well for you.  I'm hoping that the Metformin that my Doc has me on will do the job for a long time......

Philip I looked at that photo of you, and it reminds me of the minister that brought me to the Lord when I was in my 20s.  All you need is a black patch over your right eye and a big cigar hanging out of your mouth.....

I best finish the coffee and get busy.  have lots of odds and ends that need doing.  Later!

Morning folks!

Got a call from Bob Dukert (Duke) on Friday night, he was in Apex, NC for the live steam meet this weekend. We had a nice talk, but could not meet up with him this time around, way too much happening these days, so 3 out of 4 years is not too bad. Sorry we missed you Duke, and have a safe ride back today!

On the print vs. digital media battle, Conde Nast, the print media giant announced today they will cease print operations of four of their print magazines including Gourmet.

While Conde Nast is in no way related to model railroading, this move does highlight the print to digital media trend that many brick and mortar media houses are moving toward. Joe Fugate and MRH have known this for some time now, the digital media and Internet resource delivery business model is becoming more of the standard method especially in these uncertain economic conditions.

In addition to Gourmet magazine ceasing after the November 2009 print, their Cookie magazine and two bridal magazines will be eliminated as well. Some content will be combined with other print media, such as with Bon Appetite magazine or online resources such as epicurious.com.

Two online resources for these current events:

http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/05/conde-nast-to-close-gourmet-magazine/

http://gawker.com/5374446/conde-nast-folding-four-magazines

Makes you wonder if the hobby press is going to combine resources in a similar fashion or move more of their content to online resources as well. Seems that MR has been trying to catch up to MRH the past few months. Should be interesting.

And for lunch today, I'll have the Beef Wellington. Thanks Chloe!

Strong coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

Wife made chili last evening and by nightfall we were both coughing. At first we blamed it on her chili, but today woke up with chest/head colds. A coincidence I suppose. Other than regular farm chores, going to rest today.

Hope everyone is doing well.

There is only 7,553,576.41 seconds remaining until 2010!!!!!!

I just happened across this post and it’s replies from last December.  I don’t have much of the main ballasted so maybe it will be a continuing resolution…

2009 Model Railroader’s New Year Resolutions;

Lee: I think this year’s resolution will be to ballast the entire mainline track. That’s about 204 feet or 60.9 meters.  I think I’ll need more friends, LOL!

jimRCGMO: my MRR resolution probably would involve getting my wiring (busses and feeders) in (so I can again run trains!), and just getting five of my multitude of building kits assembled and ready for the layout. That and clearing out some of the clutter under the layout sections - got to crawl before I get to walk...

Ken S.: Hey just say the word when you want to ballast and I'll be glad to help you. Never counted up the footage but I've sure done my share.  My goal is to finish up the three modules which make up my paper mill so that it's fully scenicked and then move on to my fibermill board plant. Just finished making some 80 conifers which will get planted on the layout.

J: My goal will be to lay a track, although that has been my goal the last 16 years.  I should be able to achieve it because I'm retired and have less things to do.  --  J

Afternoon all. Been out and about all day so no MRRing BUT, I've done some photoing. Grain elevators for those of you interested. Aaaaaaaand a loco they use in Elkhart.

Some of you have expressed interest in grain elevators so I thought I'd throw some ideas your way. Hang on while I try and figure out how to post a link to the elevator photos so you dial up guys don't kill me and those who aren't intersted (Edit: Midwestern for interested) don't call me silly names.

There's two more nearby but Missy was getting tired of going to elevators and not getting out to see Mommy so we quit. As you may have noticed, I was wrong. Not all elevator s have support structures. I guess just because my local prototype does, doesn't mean they all do. Whistling

Jeff- Looks like there are wishes for healing and prayers for your whole family.

Ulrich. By now you must be sleeping and dreaming of your release. At least I hope so. And as far as the "words" go, maybe no words are needed. Sometimes just a look into the eyes and a hug to beat all hugs will say it all. Followed by the most heartfelt "I love you" you've ever said.

Lee- Great job. So that means you won't be saying naughty's when you unintentionally loosen your grip on the tweezers and the small part falls glue side face first to the desk as you get mere centimeters from the target? (like I would know). And at this rate of construction you'll be out of projects by 7:43 this evening by my calculations.

Well, I palnned on working a bit on my control panels today and the day is not over so downstairs I go.

Have a Great Day!!! At least what's left of it.

My mother is OK and she and my father are packing for their to Pennsylvania tomorrow. They'll be staying with my younger sister outside of Newport, near the Little Buffalo state park. Their main reason for going is that they'll be attending a Reno/Reneau family reunion. I went to the hospital to get a bunch of my white blood cells tagged and put back into my bloodstream. Having the central line straight into the heart made that easy. No needle poking for a change. Tomorrow afternoon I go back to have a bone scan done so we can see where those tagged white cells go to. Any big congregation point could be an infection.

Evenin' folks!

Chloe, what ya got on special tonight?  Beef Wellington?  Oh that sounds great.  I'll have a nice fresh garden salad to go along with that and a tall glass of Iced Tea.  I'll be at the front booth.

Jeffrey glad things went smoothly today at the hospital.  Best of luck tomorrow finding out the results of the test.  Keep you in my prayers!  Also hope your parents have a great trip up North.  Sounds like a fun trip.

Ulrich I think that Todd said it very, very well.  Don't forget to keep us posted on your progress as often as you can.

Rob hope the cold is mild and clears up quickly.  Seems like a lot of illness like that around already this year.  My son has been recovering from a really bad cold (not flu) and took a couple days off w**k last week.  Cold or not those critters at your place do still need to fed and taken care of..............

I spent an hour or so this afternoon stacking more wood.  Got another face cord all neatly waiting to go in the wood stove this Winter.  Dealt with about 25 emails from the MLK Committee.  We normally would be having a meeting right now, but the president postponed 'til next week as there is a speaker in town sponsored by the local college who will be speaking tonight on justice at the Smith Opera House downtown.  Several members emailed back saying they couldn't come to the meeting tonight.....  Other emails followed correcting the misunderstanding.  Those were followed by one from a former teacher directed to me (not copied to the other members) saying, but next Monday is Columbus Day???  I wrote back and said, "Yes it is!"  I am the treasurer, not the president....  Also spent an hour preparing the agenda and getting Minutes and Agenda out by email to all the Deacons at Church on the board for out meeting on Wednesday.

Now I may go down cellar and play with the trains for a while... Later!

Hello ...

Tomorrow is when my BIL in Nashville has his surgery for a heart valve replacement and a double bi-pass. I spoke on the phone with him, and he is in good spirits. That will help.

Todd ... I really like the pictures of the grain elevators and the BNSF ex-ATSF GP7 rebuilt.

Sawyer .... Good to see you are feeling better.

Sue ... Oh I rememeber you are the huckleberry pie fan. Yum.

Jeff .... Keep feeling better.

Rob .... Where's Rob? ...Any news from him and his health issue lately?

Barry ... That was a very light dinner for you! On a diet?

Evening Gang: Well today I woke up with a sore througt. Tomorrow I'll go to the doc since I don't want to take a chance with it turning into something worse. Is everyone in this place sick?

No MRRing or railfanning  unless you count watching the UP go by while doing chores. I really need to get a job so I can get some rest.

I think that the computer problems are fixed. My friend who at least knows something about these things came over and we spent about 2 hours working on it. It is much faster now ans I can again send E-mails with text.

It's getting past time for me to get to bed besides the cold med I took is beginning to work.

Good evening, all.  Short rain break here in central Texas, but we're so far behind the collective hope is that it'll keep coming.

Paul, seems that watching the UP pass by while doing chores is railfaning at its best.  Multi-tasking as they say now.

Apple pie with melted chedder sounds just right.  In a to go box would be nice.

See you tomorrow.

I'll have a swig of Cough Suppressant & Expectorant, please & thanks. Wife & mines colds are progressing along as expected. I have about a week to get well before my follow up sleep study with the Cpap machine.

Neat pics of all those silos.Thumbs Up

***Jeffrey, good luck with the blood testing stuff.

Ordered some 3mm 12volt red & blue LEDs for the wife's helipad. Might need to find some yellow ones, too. Not sure if any should be flashing or not? Need to go visit the local hospital helipad at night when I'm feeling better.

Any left over lights we will use to brighten up some of her carnival rides later.

Good night Y'all.

Good Evening, Chloe - I’ll have a 7Up, please ‘n’ thank you.

Nope, just taking the cautious route. Had a killer sinus headache today when I got to w**k, and it didn’t get better, not even after taking extra strength acetaminophen. Finally about 1:00-1:30 p.m., I was at about migraine level (and I've never had any before), and after calling my supervisor to clear it, I headed for home. Didn’t have any temp (this morning, or tonight, and no other flu-type symptoms). Went by the store just in case and picked up some ‘Powerade’ (hope that’s about equivalent to Gatorade, right?) but I still don’t plan on getting THAT flu...

Sue, I bet you’re gonna (or already do) love that turntable - our MRR club has that 130' one, and it’s a beauty! Sounds like you’re just beginning on the roundhouse though, right? That’s one thing holding me back on building my corner/turntable section (well, that - and re-laying the track on my current sections...). Oh, I love your signature quote - a supervisor at w**k has the one about “All things are possible.” While that is true (in its context of the original quote), but I would like to put up at w**k what I would call “The Employees’ Quotation”:
“Have you ever noticed how nothing is impossible for those who don't have to do it? “

Jeff, will (re-)add your mother (and your tests) to my prayer list, as well as your parents' travels. Like your analogy of the two drawings! Thumbs Up

Ulrich, I’m sure you will be missed at the ‘Stalag’ by some of your fellow ‘residents’ (maybe not by the administrators, but hey, so what?). Will pray for you and Petra to get the highest possible prices for anything you need/have to sell, and for a favorable and good transition to getting over to this side of ‘the pond.’AngelAngel I think Todd’s suggestion on the hug sounds good (even if guys don’t usually do that over there!). Keep us posted as time and internet cafe’s permit on what’s happening for you two, please.

Lee - I’m kinda jealous of you and others who have found those G&D cars; I never find anything that neat at the train shows I go to. Sigh Boy, after reading all the stuff you assembled the other day, it almost made me tired. Smile,Wink, & Grin I will need to go check out your creek photos (and any other fun ones you have on your site).

Oh, Lee - on the 2009 resolutions, I might have a start on about five of those kits (if I count the scratchbuilt background warehouse, where I need to put the sides and fronts together and do bracing); just need to get them finished. I hit a snag on the track recently - at the garden RR party Sat. with the MRR club members, I found out that some of my turnouts (some Shinoharas I received as a gift) may take some effort to get usable for DCC. Sad I may just get more Pecos or Atlas turnouts to replace them come next payday or two, and hope I can use the Shinoharas later somewhere else.

Ryan, as for print media combining in the MRR hobby - if they're gonna, I’d like to see MR and RMC combine, so we could get the drawings and scratchbuilding stuff from RMC combined with the style, layout ideas and plans of MR (like MR's use of color better, too). You reminded me to - I’ve been downloading my MRH issues, but haven’t taken nearly the time I should to read through them once I have them on the drive. Oops

PC, if you wanted to, you could do that eyepatched preacher look that Ray talked about, for the neighborhood kids who may come trick-or-treating at the end of this month. Heh, heh, heh...Pirate

Todd - great pics (of the loco as well as the elevators)! What model of loco is that? I see it’s only a four axle unit, but I’m no superspotter when it comes to locos. Ah, I see Garry already identified it - thanks, Garry! Good to see a GP7 still out switching and running - those things are the Eveready Bunny of locos, I think.Wink

Sawyer, good to hear you’re back at ‘em. Yeah!! Get caught up (on your schoolw**k, sleep/rest, eating, etc.), y’hear? Smile

Paul, it's good to hear you’re getting yourself checked by the Doc (and I’m guessing you don’t mean the large animal vet, right? Smile,Wink, & GrinWhistling I'm sure you're happy that your computer is doing its stuff like it should again. Thumbs Up

Mreagant, good to see you by again, and looks like you and Paul are about neighbors.Cowboy Drop by when you can talk a little more, okay?

Rob, take care of both of you there, especially yourself, as much difficulty as you have had with your sleep, you need the rest even more to fight off any cold. AngelAngel

Well, time for this ‘cowpoke’ to head off to bed. Want to get enough sleep so I’m not tired when I go back to w**k in the morning. Prayers continue, including our newer additions for healing, safe travels, and good test results.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good evening, just a RBF please 'n thank-you, I'm still full from our monthly Fire Dept. meeting...grilled pork chop sandwiches and some kind of grilled deer meat chunks...tasty!

TODD: Liked the elevator pics Thumbs Up and really liked the rebuilt GEEP... I really miss watching GP-7s w**king in Cedar Rapids and at Beverly Yard. CNW was dumping them pretty fast and furious at the end, and UP wasted little time getting rid of what was left. I'm a big fan of rebuilt Geeps, with all the extra stacks, chopped noses, etc.

ROB: I believe the helipad at St. Luke's in Cedar Rapids has red around it. The ambulance garage here in Clarence has, I think, red lights around the perimiter (sp.) and then also has white lights which are aimed across the pad to light it up without blinding the pilot (always a bad thing). Don't forget to put up a wind sock, so the pilot knows which way the wind is blowing. Also, any powerlines close-by should have red lights on the poles and even those orange balls on the line so the pilot doesn't clip 'em.  Not sure how big you made the pad...most medical choppers require at least a 70x70 pad...they prefer 100, which of course is a huge chunk of land on any layout. As an added detail, you could have a fire engine standing by if the bird is ready to take-off or has just landed.

JEFF: Best wishes for good test results tomorrow, and hoping for a safe journey for your folks.

PC: Awesome shots from the bike ride... the more I meet bikers and get to know them, the more I like 'em. Personally, I'm a wuss. I have to have four wheels in contact with the road at all times, and have to have steel around me. I'd flat-out hurt myself on a motorcycle.

SUE: Good to see you again ma'am...haven't seen you in here lately. Always impressed with your scenery. Hopefully, they get your headaches figured out fast.

I know I'm forgetting to mention some people and things from over the weekend...just too tired. I've been trying to hold-off and prevent some form of head cold which has been attacking Loving Wife since about Wednesday or Thursday. She came home from w**k early Friday...and I promptly sealed her into the bedroom. I put plastic sheeting over the doorway...she looks kinda pathetic in there. I slip plates of food in a few times per day, and gave her a bucket.... I think she's going to try to go back to w**k tomorrow. We'll see how long she's there before her cubicle mates force her to go back home.

Yes...I'm only kidding about the plastic sheeting and the bucket. But, I have been avoiding her like the plague... Unlike Loving Wife, I don't get sick days. No w**k = no pay.

On THAT happy note...it's time for a blast of head cold drugs (just in case) and sleeeeeeeeeeep.

Good nite,

 Good morning.

It's 68 and cloudy. The high will be around 87 and there's a chance of rain.

Not much going on today. My home health nurse will come out today to change the dressing on my central line then I have to be at the the hospital no later than 1 pm to get the bone scan done. The rest of the day is pretty much mine to do anything I please. My parents set off on their trip to Pennsylvania this morning and I have to take care of their dogs while they're gone. I usually don't spend much time at their home while they're traveling as their big house feels so empty and barren when they're not around.

Chris, you're whats known as a "cager".  You ride around in your cage all day.  Now you know you were born to run free.......break out of the cage my man!

Jeff, I hope all goes well with the doc today.  I have to go see the doc too.  I have a fluid buildup or something in both ears.  Makes everthing muffled.  It's been going on since spring.  I'm hoping the doc can fix it soon.

Garry; anytime….

Todd; you know I use them more for applying decals and setting people.  You can clip them onto decals while they are in the water to avoid them slipping off the paper until your ready.  When gluing people you can leave the tweezers on them until the glue sets.

Sawyer, glad your better, hope you get back to 100% soon!

Jeff, that’s pretty cool they can tag white blood cells to see who they go and beat up.  I hope it all goes well for you.  How’s the vision? Clearing up any?  Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recover and an “uneventful” trip to the hospital.

Sue, the rocks in the bottom is river gravel.  Harley Smith in Chardon, OH that dries, sorts, sifts, real limestone and gravel for model layouts.  If you’re ever in the need for real stone or coal in any scale he’s the guy to talk to.

The guy in the boat has caught: 1 mermaid, 2 catfish, 3 small mouth bass, and 1 panfer.

I need to add some deer; up here they travel in herds to the apple orchards.  I also have some water effects to add a little current to the logs and ducks.

Barry, The Roundhouse, Branch line Yardmaster, and Athearn box car kits are easy, not many parts.  I have a few Branch line blue print series to build and those will take a few days.

Jim; don’t sweat the whole turnout compatibility issue.  I was shown you can use a little Testors paint to insulate the tips and the frogs and all is well.

 Good Morning,

a dull fall day, but I am at home now! And my internet  connection is still working! That´s the happy part - the unhappy part is, that I am back to real life with all the problems I had before being sent to the "Stalag" - they just did not  disappear the way I´d hoped for. So it remains to be vultures, not eagles, who are circling above my house. We have now confirmation that social security will kick in, so we don´t have to rely on donations to buy our food.any more. Words cannot describe my feelings about being unable to manage Petra´s and my life on our own and to be dependent on welfare and charity. Sad

I still have hopes for better days to come.

So much has happened here in Elliot´s Diner - it is hard to catch up individually. My sincere thanks to all of you who have included us in their thoughts and prayers. Also a sincere Sign - Welcome to new or returning members.

Zoe, I have a car load (40 ` box car)  of homemade

all freshly made by Petra.

 Blessings to all of you!

Good Morning All,

A regular and a glazed donut in a poke please Zoe. Still just marking time here as we continue to move stuff from A to B. The rental house is just about clear of our stuff and while we've made inroads sorting and storing a lot is still in the container in the driveway.

Got the settlement agreement for the Focus worked out with insurance and the car delivered to the shop. Now to find the time to strip the damaged and get it mechanically sound again. Then it's off to the body shop for the rest. Seems to be no frame damage though which is good.

Sorry to hear of all the trials you're all having. Jeff - listen to the docs and get better soon. Have had a touch of the cold some of you've had but getting off easy so far. Good to hear Ulrich is getting sprung soon and can plan his comeback.

Not much else but w..k and the house just now. New Jersey went well though we lost a motor in the Lotus 47 and a hub on the Lotus 7. Now it's a mad thrash to get cars ready to leave for Atlanta next monday and the SVRA finale plus the last two races for the Audi R-8 at Daytona and Sebring.

Lee and a panfor eh? I suppose for frying the fish (hopefully not the mermaid - you Coast Guard types aren't really cannibalistic are you?)   CUL,  J.R.
