I went to Radio Shack today to get a package of test/jumper leads as I can't find any of the ones I know are around here somewhere and I got a new clip on heat sink for soldering. I'm gonna have to modify the tips so it will hold onto the rail. Also went to Lowe's and picked up a couple of things for my Dremel. A package of felt polishing wheels and a new mandrel for use with said polishing wheels. I'm also looking at getting a new heater. The big one I got last year is acting really flaky. When I turned it on to test it it made a pop and now it absolutely will not turn off via the thermostat. It just gets hotter and hotter and hotter. The only way to stop it is to turn it's power off.

Good evening Diners: I started this about 24 hours ago, and I'd better get it posted before the switcher comes again!  Time for dessert - a banana split with Maple/Walnut ice-cream please Flo. Extra walnuts and some poury cream (un-whipped whipping cream in this household) would not be rejected!

Sober Island was directly over-flown by the ISS  on Sept 8th and 10th, with a miss to the north of some miles on the 9th. The first two times it was accompanied by the shuttle. It's neat to see it fade in the earth's penumbra, and disappear into the full shadow.

by Chris8 RAY, BARRY, RYAN, Der JOHN; good to see you guys.

...OK, Chris, I can take a hint Clown  It's just that I've been uber busy getting outside projects done while the weather holds...and before Kris' cousin and her husband arrive from the UK (Sunday next)  Today was day 3 of the composter project. That involved clearing out this year's compost onto a tarp (the old composter had 3 bins of 1 metre cubed, and the "this year" one was over full.) Then the old and rotting boards from the previous bins had to be cleared away, and the re-usable boards salvaged, together with all the zinced nails.  The brick foundation I'd laid had to be re-discovered, cleared and leveled. Then today I rebuilt the bins from 7 shipping pallets, tying them together with sections cut from the salvaged boards using the aforementioned nails. Shovelling the compost back, ½ into the "let it sit another year" bin, and the freshest ( a relative term!Whistling) back into the "this year's" bin. This whole thing took time away from my parging the concrete foundation of the house project that has progressed to where the two most-exposed-to-the-weather walls are done except for the top coat of paint. (and Chris, the spray gun I'm using has a tricky screw control for the needle that has to be got "just right" When it is the gun is great, when it isn't it's a Royal PITA.)

In the mean time, I'm edging towards completion of the HO tar trailer. Since my last update on Sept 3rd, the propane tanks and their mounting post and bands have been installed, together with the feed line and valve. The front stand is also done, but I'm stuck on the safety chains.

I'm hoping I thought I could find a set of N caboose end rails and get the chains from them. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to find the old BN caboose that would have provided them. I also have to figure a spout of some sort for the tar to be collected from into buckets. No fancy smancy pumps on this puppy! Once that's done it's tail lights and a number plate. Lastly the Polly Scale Oily Black to simulate the tar splashes. Rob what colour are commercial plates in your state?

Farm tractors...This layout now has my first, a JD - but don't ask me what model, I haven't a clue. It is however modern, has a cab and everything! It's towing a sprayer into what will be, when the trees get planted, an orchard.

A round tuit...like this I've had on my desk for years? Can't recall who gave it to me...some aggrieved secretary probably!

CapeJim:

Aw, Barry - you know now, DerJohn's got the inspiration for his next scratchbuilding project to w**k on...
...Those ladder cages aren't made by anyone that I know of, otherwise Jim it does look interesting!  Actually I need a bunch of those cages for the container crane. I'm told it's possible to do using clear drinking straws (in N, it'd be the kind that come with those small juice boxes) Apparently one paints or inks on the cage frame, and then Dull coats the whole thing - the clear straw is said to disappear leaving the cage!  I've two of those straws put by.  Film at eleven...or when my round tuit is re-charged!

Jeff: That was an outstanding score at the yard sale. I've never seen any mrr items at any yard sales here. On a related note however, the power supply for our Heritage Society's Epson scanner went missing a few years ago from the office at the museum. It's an odd ball one, 15.2 volts at 1.2 Amps. Epson want north of $30 for the replacement part, not money I'm prepared to ask for when I can use my own at home. (The Epson does have a few features mine doesn't, but I haven't the spare time to do the projects that would utilize those!) However, about 3 weeks ago I was at a yard sale and came across the power supply - not just another Epson scanner supply, but the Heritage Society's one! I know because of the way the power cord was bundled - the way I bundled it!  I didn't get into an argument with the vendor...just paid 50 cents and felt very pleased to have the scanner back in operation.  The window blind behind the masked yard-saler reminds me I have to get on with the backdrop painting on the blind behind my double track bridge! Great score on that NiagaraBow  Glad the op. went well, and the fever's under control also.

PC: Speaking of pancakes, there's a Pancake Breakfast in Port Dufferin on Sunday as a benefit for a family who were burned out (family were out at the time, no vehicles damaged, all his construction tools safe in a shed, but the house (his mother's old place) is gone. He's a volunteer fireman, and she's a paramedic.  I had a rotten night last night as well 4:40 a.m. wake up - and maybe 15 minutes sleep before I gave up at 7:07.SadZzz

Robby: Ditto Vincent's comments on the backdrop. I like the way those bands of lighter green trees come down the slopes through the darker ones.Thumbs Up

RT: Good to see you in again!  Fergie drops in every once  in a quite long while. What's new in your mrring? BTW, how's the pacemaker doing for you?

Taking PC's lead, I'm off to bed. Lots to do tomorrow getting ready for our UK guests. Good night all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a Rio Grande mug of decaf, please. Thanks!

Too full from dinner for any pancakes, actually. Went to local O'Charley's and had Atlantic planked salmon, steamed brocolli, salad, and three of their Dinner [yum!] rolls. Was afraid I'd have to catch the low-body flatcar over here....Oops

Chris, I think if you brought that airbrush gun of yours into Missouri (with the luck you've had with that cap), you'd have to put it on the dash of your vehicle, or else get a concealed-carry permit. ShockSmile,Wink, & Grin Sounds like you're getting the hang of it, though.

Jeff - my mistake on reading your post,Sign - Oops I'd thought you'd said something about a plug in there (but maybe some other kind of plug than a decoder). You're coming along on that - and I'd agree with Todd, at that price you about have to find some excuse reason to run that on your layout! Nice mask, too, Jeff!

And Todd, that's a big negatory about my having on-call soon - at least not for a couple of weekends. I think the next-to-the-last Sat. I'm due again, but no other ones this month, which I'm glad about! I asked our gal at w**k who does payroll checks (including for the on-calls), and she said I get an extra $25 for having it on Labor Day. At least I'm getting more, and I didn't have to use any ETO for that day (as everybody else did). Tracklaying crew is preparing for tomorrow, all right - the boss has called all ten crew members for their shift tomorrow and Sunday until that section gets (re-)done. Yeah!! Hey, I'll hold your seat while you swim over and see what's going on with Ulrich....Whistling

Bama, best wishes (and prayers) for the assistant manager job, that it be the best one for you now (or that if there's a better job out there, that you get THAT one). And best wishes for you and Amy to get through the next 7 (or however many more) weeks until the newest addition arrives. Is big 'Sis' getting excited yet about becoming 'the older sister'?

Oh, you could tell that it's about district fair time here in Cape Girardeau now. The police have put up the signs (stapled to the tomato-stakes) along all the streets in a multi-block radius from Arena Park (where the fair will be held) - and that include my street I'm on. So I will have NO tolerance for anyone in our building or the next one (other side of the parking lot) if they DARE to invite their buddies to park in our lot to avoid paying parking fees... (mutter, mutter, ransefranzen,#$%*^&...)Grumpy We're tight enough on parking spots just for the people who live in our apartment building as is! (Okay, rant off...)

Oh, yeah - and since it's fair time, that does mean no leaving the windows open at night (since we're close enough to hear the tractor pulls, carnival barkers' PA's, and maybe even some of the concerts, but not good enough to fully enjoy the concerts). But it's okay, since our weather's been warmer lately, I've had the A/C on during the day anyway.

PC, that was great about your son's coach and the new team position. Put a smile on my face just reading about it (and I'm sure you had a smile on yours, too, perhaps)!

Robby - what can I say (being a former art teacher myself) about your art teacher? Hmm...probably not a lot that'd be suitable for our younger Diners in here (we 'oldsters' are expected to set some kind of good example, right?).Oops Wink I haven't seen anything in your work that wouldn't pass (and then some!). Maybe he just didn't like rust? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Ray, maybe on the church directory, you could pick the photo that would help keep the mice out of that storage shed in the back yard? Wink

Jerry - good to hear the chair repair guy had the smarts to change out all of the bolts. How's the chair holding up for now (and how long until the new one arrives)?

Rob, sharp looking loco there - and yeah, sounds like an okay excuse to me. Of course, I still wouldn't tell the wife for a while... (maybe she won't be able to tell it from the MAC unit?). Thumbs Up

Vincent, another sharp BN diesel - do I detect a pattern there? Whistling After you mentioned, I was suprised that was a GP-9, since I thought the fan looked different. Guess that'a a winterization hatch or such. (Got to get those new glasses...)

Sawyer, that sounds like a good excuse, since you were w**king on MRR stuff. Congrats on your team's win, also!

Bill (RT), good to see you're hanging around, and thanks for stopping in. Yeah!! W**k keeping you busy, or have you been able to do any MRR'ing stuff for yourself?

DerJohn, that tar trailer is looking outstanding! As for your ladder cages, doesn't Walthers make those in their N scale modular kits? I know they have them in HO scale, so I'd expect they might likely have 'em in N as well. Ah, found that Walthers doesn't. However, I didn't find photos, but Gold Medal Models does have brass etched ladder cages (200 scale feet worth) listed on Walthers' site (and in stock tonight:

304-16038 Industrial Safety Cage Ladders (Photo-Etched Metal Kit) -- Over 200 Scale Feet  N  $16.00

Not cheap, but I have their fire escape ladders for buildings, and they're made well.

Ordered some more Arizona Rocks and Minerals scenery/ballast stuff from Caboose Hobbies tonight. Figure I'll get to the scenery soon enough if I can get the tracklaying done this weekend...

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evening all, just stopping in for a RBF before calling it a night.  Thanks for the recommendation about getting the right paint, then matching it from there.  I think I'm also going to try to find out what color that CSX actually calls that blue and the gold that they use for YN3, so that I might have a better idea of what to look for.  I've also decided that aside from looking around on the bay and at HL, I'm going to hit the websites for the "local" hobby shops (as in anything within about 3 hours of here) and see what they have on the shelf and if they will do online sales.

Tomorrow has a lot in store for me, going to be starting on the remodelling of the master bedroom and bathroom, along with continuing to put molding up through all the other rooms.  Amy and Heather and my mom are going to be hitting a consignment sale in Montgomery in the morning, so I'll get some time by myself.  I think that as long as its not raining, I'm going to go ride the bike.  Well, not much else going on around here, I'm just going to get onto my search for cars and for locomotives and track and everything else.

Good evening, Chloe? just a RBF please 'n thank you...

DER JOHN: I think I know that goofy screw-thing with the needle you were talking about. At one point, I did manage to extract the needle in it's entirity. I'm thinking while it was out, the other parts, no longer held in by it, relocated themselves just enough for the needle to go back in, but also far enough out-of-kilter to go ka-blooey on me. And yeah, I "got the hang" of this one pretty quick...quicker than I thought I would in light of all the trials, tribulations, fussing, cussing (sorry Reverend), fighting; etc. I had to do with the el-cheapo Testor's guns.  The tar trailer just keeps getting more and more incredible! BowBowThumbs Up Please extend my best wishes to my brother firefighter and his paramedic wife. Sorry we won't be able to make the benefit breakfast.

JIM: I don't know, I might be profiled as a "domestic terrorist" with that thing...Whistling Oh, and TODD, doncha worry there Mr. King of Toddland... you are perfectly safe in your kingdom from any launches of intercontinental airbrush caps from these quarters.Smile,Wink, & Grin (besides...I STILL can't find it...)

SAWYER: I might have to hire you to solder my rails once the layout finally gets built. That and wiring are two things I will NOT be looking forward to.

PC: I'm gonna echo the other guys, but your son's coach sounds like a great individual. It's good to know some good ones are still out there. I heard today about a high school volleyball coach who humiliates his players based on their weight, ability/or lack of, etc. Parents want him crap-canned...district hasn't done anything. DisapproveTHAT editor and Mr. Publisher were going to pull their daughter off the team, but she beat them to it by quitting.

Huh...just caught scanner traffic out of Jones County. The Anamosa (Grant Wood country) Fire Dept. was just paged to the Sheriff's Office/jail by a very panicked dispatcher...somebody is stuck in the elevator.

I'm gonna go to a corner booth and in honor of 9-11 and the roughly 3000 innocent lives lost, including 343 FDNY members; I'll be reading "Report From Ground Zero" by Dennis Smith. Smith is a retired FDNY firefighter from "the war years" of the 70s when he was stationed with Engine 82 in the South Bronx. His "Report From Engine Co. 82" was a best-seller. On 9-11-01 he went to the WTC, and was among the guys digging through the rubble. It's the kind of book that tends to put a lump in the throat now and then.

Good night,

Long as you don't mind my choice of music...

http://www.youtube.com/user/sbpackernut#play/favorites/38/gdAezE0LOtQ

lol, that ain't all I listen to though, as you know. I'll lsiten to bands like tenth avenue North, Kutless, etc.

Usually I crank the music and solder till I get bored, then go do something else. Wiring shouldn't be too tough for me on this layout though.

Good morning,Thursday was my official retirement ceremony from Active duty and yesterday I had to play catch up at work so I haven’t had time to stop in the diner and say hi.  Hopefully today I can get caught up on everything I missed over the past couple of days.

Today: A chance of sprinkles before 9am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Northeast wind between 9 and 15 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 56. North wind between 3 and 9 mph.

Morning all. Flo, I'll take a ginormous stack of pancakes and bacon, thanks.

Sorry I haven't been in in a few days. Been a little busy with school starting up. Hopefully it'll calm down a bit.

I'll be in the back booth catching up (and attacking these pancakes).

 Good morning.

It's 71 and cloudy. The high will be around 80 and there's a chance of rain.

Went to see the foot doc yesterday on a post-op follow up visit. He noted that one stitch is ripped but didn't seem too concerned about it as the incision appears to be healing nicely. I have to go back to see him again on Tuesday. I can't tell you  how happy I am to have those big lumps of bone off the bottom and side of my foot. I do however have to get used to a new center of balance so I have to use my old rosewood cane to help maintain my balance for a while. I also have to stop the daily walks down to my parent's place to chlorinate the pool for a couple of weeks. It's near the end of the season anyway so no big thing there. Did more work on the Niagara yesterday. I didn't realize just how small the rims on the wheels are until I started painting the edges of the wheels white. The wheels in the trailing truck were the hardest. As far as weather goes it's fantastic if you're a duck. It rained most of the night and is still raining now. I turned my heater on yesterday to make sure it was still in working order and it made a loud pop when I pressed the power button. It didn't take long to realize that something was wrong. It can't be controlled by the thermostat at all and was running away on full power. The only way to stop it was to turn it off. I did some tests on it and have come to the conclusion that the thermostat is faulty and if I try using it as is I could have a charred steel frame sitting where my trailer is. I could have the unit repaired but I'd probably be spending more than a new unit would cost. I've already found one at Lowe's that fits the bill. They want $200 for it. At that price it won't set my wallet on fire, rather merely singe it. Most of the cheap heaters I looked at use a lot of power and only heat up to 200 square feet if you're lucky. The one I found looks like one of the old glass fronted wood burning heaters. It uses 1,300 watts and heats 400 square feet which is a lot closer to the size of my trailer, and that's twice what the cheapies do at 1,500 watts, so that's the one I'll go for. Thank God for Lowe's credit!

Just that I spent over a half hour writing that post, and it's gone. And the fact that a) I'm at the beach and its raining so I'm extremely bored, and b) I've been up since 8:30, when I should be sleeping until 10 since its Saturday. Eh, at least I'm not tired. Zzz

EDIT: Whoops, looks like I got breakfast today. Eat up!

That's why I type my post up in Notepad and save it. All I have to do then is copy and paste it into the reply box and click post. If something happens I just paste it again and click post. Sure cuts down on the hair loss.

Gooooooooooood morning.  I am finally off.

Well my package came with some new cars today.  One is that new train company "Exact Rail".  Its a 60' Penn Central boxcar.  I will make it nice and streaky!!

Thanks for the comments on the backdrop.  I haven't done anything else to it.  Maybe sometime this weekend.

The wife and I are wondering on what to do today.  FedEx is having a cookout, but it looks like it might rain.

Well everybody have a good Saturday.

Mornin' everyone!

Flo I'll have a short stack of buckwheat pancakes with NYS Maple Syrup and a cup of dark roast coffee in a R&GV mug.

A very gloomy gray day here in the Finger Lakes.  Got some rain last night.  Currently 61°F with a high around 67°F and a 40% chance of showers today.  Good day to play with the trains.......

Got up this morning to find that the pincushion which was on the dining room table next to sewing machine sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor.  All the pins are pushed in all the way and I have spent quite a while looking for stray pins on the rug and the floor.  Didn't find any so I'm hoping the kitties didn't ingest any of them.  There was a little red ball attached to the top of the pincushion by a heavy string that is now gone, hopefully not into one of the cats.  I'll be watching them both closely today.

Time to get moving I guess.  Later!

Good morning. Coffee and more pancakes please. What? I like pancakes. Everybody else gets pancakes. They seem to be the rage. Only I’d like some Boysenberry syrup please and Thank you.

Was hoping to get a little train time but Brenda asked what I had planned today, so it looks like I’m going through more of Mom’s stuff and packing it to her apt, Oh well.

DerJohn- BowExcellent tar trailer. And express my well wishes to your Firefighter friend and I am so glad no one was hurt.

Jim- Hey! An extra 25 huh? Well isn’t that nice! I’m sure you can find a way to turn that into something neat for the RR.Big SmileThumbs Up

Bama- I feel for you. Not in that I can’t get colors at all, I can, But I need Swamp Holly Orange. No such luck in the paint category so I’m gonna try CNW yellow and see how that looks maybe add just a touch of red or orange to see how that works out. Problem with some colors you have no idea what colors are in the mix and what proportions. There was a thread about mixing paint here just recently. Not about how to, just the lack of people who do. Hey! We’ve got an Art teacher and a couple of Artists here, maybe they can get you pointed in the right direction for a mix.

Yep, that’s what I do for the most part. Write it up on word processor the cut and paste. Haven’t had any problems and it’s easier for me to NOT have to remember stuff. I can just read and respond as I come across it. I do sometimes post without but usually only for short responses.

Have a Great Day!!!!

Our family had a garage sale today, I helped out and had a few things for sale. One thing I really love about garage sales is meeting new people.

Coffee in an extra large AT&SF mug, please and thanks.

***Der, very cool trailer.Thumbs Up Those propane tanks are so real looking. As for your plates question, I would guess white, but have never paid attention to them.

***Ray, sure hope the kitties are OK. They can't resist stuff like that.

***Jeffrey, how's your foot doing?

Got a call the FIL is having a seizure today, so called the wife (who was on her way to work). Haven't heard any news back yet. Cross my fingers he will come around like previously and be OK.

Been cleaning out under the painting porch I built. Going to have it concreted next week. It has been getting "musty" and needs a floor before it gets worse. Once the floor is in, I'll paint all the boards with KILZ and should be able to safely store stuff in it, plus not have that musty smell comeing up into the porch.

Wife got a steal on a cement horse. I went to pick it up, but it must weigh a good 300lbs. Realistically, that is my limit, (after a warm up). I wasn't dressed for it (would have torn my jeans) and didn't want to drop it (would have broke for sure). There was also nobody around to help me, so I will likely let them deliver it. I hate getting old. OK, that's all the excuses I can come up with.Ashamed

Have a good day all.

Coffee refill, please.

***Jerry, a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Sallie.

FIL update: My wife took the night off from work to stay with him. She was able to persuade the staff where her folks reside to not call EMS. No reason for him to go to the ER when there is nothing they can actually do to fix him there anyway. He should be fine. Nuff said.

Good Evening Diners!

It seems like a lot of us are having the same weather--cloudy and wet.

Jerry, a Happy Birthday to Sallie and hope she had a nice day.

Jeff, nice job on those rims. White painted rims are something that I look for when buying steam as all  CN passenger locos had them and a few freight ones too. OK not sure why I"m now typing on a slant but hey, it looks kind of nice.

Der John, amazing job on that tar trailer. Hope you have a nice visit with your relatives from the U.K. Speaking of UK, my wife went miy wife went into a Brit candy shop in Victoria and stocked up on Dolly Mix. Turns out she developed a taste for it on a trip a few years ago, well in 1993 to be exact and I never knew anything about it.

I finally finished my Intermountain box car kit today. I am quite happy with the results and have to say that the kit went together well but with new trucks, couplers and weights it probably cost me close to $30 and I got it on sale. Just have to put the dull coat on it as it is far too shiny. Say Jeff was it a Krylon or Valspar matte finished you used the other day? Looked like it faded the finish nicely from the photo. I want to fade my cars, not put rust on them as I don't remember box cars in the late '50s as  being rusty, just faded. I checked some photos and video I have and that seemed to be the case then. Must have been all that nice lead in the paint.

Well, time for dinner, so I'll sign off for now.
