So, I’ve been researching railroad operations in the North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia area and concentrating on coal production, transportation, and delivery. This is a perfect area to model current coal operations! I found a mine named the Ben Creek Mine (my son’s name is Ben) and it is serviced by the Norfolk Southern. I also found some coal fired electric power plants in North Carolina and are also serviced by the Norfolk Southern. BINGO! I found a possible actual prototype that I can model! Not bad for one day’s research, huh!

Bill North, I have not been 100% totally happy with any cellular phone company, and I have used Sprint, Nextel, Alltel, Verizon, and Cingular. They all suffer from the same issue, which is a lack of appropriate infrastructure, as cell towers are just not located in every square mile, even in major metropolitan areas.

Inch The pic of the inside of the switch tower has given me some ideas for a style of handle for my turnouts because I would like to do something like Fergie has done to throw his turnouts.

Flip We will be down in your neck of the woods in a couple weeks as we are going to Disney and then meeting a friend that lives about a hour South of there that used to ride with us. Yes,we are riding the BIKE down and is there any other way to travel??? Besides,it’s the next best thing to flying.

Evening all, barley pop, Cleo
Went over to campground C for a while and talked to Bryan bout the ham n bean cook Sunday. Looks like 10# beans and 4 or 5 of the ham bones I’ve got in the freezer, plus cornbread and everything else every ones bringin in. It’ll be a feed fur sure.
The tracks out back has seen a lot of traffic today, I’m guessing their moving everything they can, and give some of the crews a weekend off. Hope some are still movin while we’re there.

Hope PC’s Ok, I think they had some bad storms over his way, last night n today, and he hasn’t been in at all. Not like him.

Ryan , looks like a good plan to me and interesting operations.

Duke , always glad to help in anyway.

Cheese , easy there son [pats on the back and such] , just keep remembering it’s all gong to be better on the next one.

Good evening folks: A really bright sunny day on our shore. It only clouded up about 5:00p.m., and didn’t shower even then. Mid afternoon we were at a blistering 60 degrees! [(-D]

Our friends who moved away are now on High Speed with hteir cable company. So they’ve given us their old US Robotics V.92 modem. I’m going to see it will deliver any higher dial up connection than the 24.4 kbps that is standard for our part of the island. No harm trying, and who knows, we may be able to reach some where in the 30s. Gasp!

Good Evening Gang: Boy today was hot in the afternoon. Mary Ann and I loaded up our new dump trailer with some of the debre from the last big storm. John came by and helped us take down a large off shoot of an elm tree by the house. It was rubbing the roof. We also cut down a dead pine tree and loaded up everything into the trailer. It was sure nice when we got down to where we have the burn pile. Just back up, open the tail gate, and pu***he button. The bed goes up and the load goes out.

Speaking of John. He's getting married Jun 22. So we're ingaged in planning. His fiancee and he are going for a low key inexpensive wedding and reception. Of course the reception will be held at the live steam track. She is a very understanding girl.

Nothing on the MRR front. I have decided to build a new layout. As soon as Mary Ann's building is built I'll have the basement to myself. Maybe, I hope. Since the old layout is modular I'll take it apart and set up a much smaller version in another part of the basement. That way I'lll have something to run while I do the prep of the main area. This time for the first time I'll do the lighting, backdrop, and ceiling first. Then I'll start the layout. This is all a ways off.

The calf is still doing well. The wound seems to be healing and he is strong and really a job to handle.

I guess one of the advantages of dial up is that you don't take the time to look into the flaming.

Well it's after 10pm so I'll say good night.

Good late evening gang.....sorry to be so late, after working all day building wall, we went to a retirement party for one of our long time friends at the town school, a great teacher.

So obviously no MRR stuff done today, and more than likely not tomorrow either as the wall project for son #2 ( Mike) has turned into a major deal. The soil is heavy clay, and after all the rains we had lately, there is some "bleeding" of water into the 3' ditch cut for the base of the wall and drain pipe, making the clay in the bottom of the ditch too unstable to support a heavy wall yet. More TS's are forecasted for Friday night with an advancing Cold Front from the west...ohhh joy, more mud.

Today it was full sun, 75 degrees in the shade, but a thermometer in the sun registered 92F!! No wonder I was so dehydrated......and I drank plenty of water too.

Silver Spike Ahhhh Ryan my man, French Meat Pie....it is made of ground beef, ground pork, diced potatoes, seasonings, and placed in a pie, and served with gravy on top. Some people may add onions also. It is real good!!!!

COX47 Yes Palmer is a great Hot Spot, we visit there often. As for the little industrial Switcher, I can't tell you much about the pulling power yet because I don't have any tracks laid yet ( sob ) still too busy with yard work and helping the sons at their new homes. I will get a picture of the little guy as soon as I get a free minute...ya right.

INCH53] Only us grandfathers know the real story about exercise and grandkids. These young doctors may be sharp in their trade, but have not had to keep up with grandkids boundless energy from sunup to sundown.

DER JOHN If the sea winds are causing you trouble with gardens, you might try a fence to block the cold winds. I don't know if Colorado Blue Spruce trees can survive your soil conditions where you live near the ocean, so you might have to stick with a stockade fence to really block the winds.

Hope every ones doin fine this day. Warm here this morning, looking for highs round 80 and sunny, with a slim to none chance of a popcorn storm.
Got mowing and yard work for today, may try n slip over to the campground n watch some trains. While I was there last evening [with no camera] seen 3 go through in 45 min., one had a radioactive car that goes through bout once a month.
Forgot to say the Indy bound train I last posted pics of was dragging mostly wood chip cars.

Good Morning All,
Regular and one of Bills' donuts please Zoe. Didn't get any model stuff doe last night. Found a couple of restoration and preservation magazines in the museum cast off bin and read those instead. There was a nice article on the PRR Altoona works with pics of the heavy machine tools and an article on boiler repair - good stuff! Even though I know it's dirty gritty work I think I would enjoy working on steam locomotives. If I get down to Strasburg maybe I'll look into the steam maintainence program they have there. If it's anything like our museum they'll never notice one more grouchy old man.
Lots to do again today. Spent yesterday getting the Datsun 510 aligned and balanced so it could go to Nelson Ledges in Ohio this weekend. Right now I'm doing gates for the Reading car as gov't work, and making an aluminum oil tank for a Lotus 18. Ran the oxy/acy kit out of oxygen so i get to wait for the welding supply to open up.
All for now - hope you all have an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. It's always a bit of a quandry since the time off is enjoyable but melencholy at the same time thinking about friends that didn't make it back. I guess that's why it's Memorial Day. CUL, J.R.

I started an inventory of all my locomotives and rolling stock, and I have more items than I thought. I have recorded about 2/3’s of the total boxes and it will be interesting to see what items I might have too much of or too little of since my layout has changed. Since Monique now works for a steel fabrication company I have access to first hand knowledge of their steel procurement, fabrication, and delivery process. They have some raw steel delivered by CSX to one of their fabrication plants in Charlotte, NC, and I just need to find out where they are getting the steel from, i.e. the manufacturer. So now I want to model steel on the layout.

I have one of those 12 months same as cash coupons from Lowe’s if I use their credit card, and if I spend at least $299.00 on the total purchase. Looks like a trip for some new layout materials could be in order for this weekend! [yeah]

And speaking of the weekend!

Cheese3, Sorry to hear about the layout, but better things ahead huh! And that is a great video tribute to your layout, such a shame to see it go! Before our move I had to scrap all the lumber left over from my previous layout, just did not have enough room to carry it all up!

Inch, Thanks for the compliment on the layout design! As I said, the track plan is still a work in progress, until the actual track gets laid, that is! Looking forward to actually getting some benchwork built soon!!!! Also, great photos of the rail fan site!

John W, I hope it is not too much though, I did want to keep it interesting with the combination of loads and empties going both ways, and a mix of a little local activity too. I am also looking into the idea of “off site” action with running some box cars as thought they are through traffic coming from and going to off site industries. These box cars would show up in the classification yards and then leave again but would never really show up at any sidings.

Paul, Hey, can you come and cut down some limbs from my willow oak? It too is touching the roof of my house! I want one of those trucks! I’ve been hauling stone from a new development going up just a few miles away and using it for landscaping, a dump feature on my truck would be great! Also, glad to hear the calf is doing better!

Hey ***, Yep, yesterday was a really hot one here too! It got up to 90 in the mid afternoon. Now you got me hungry, that meat pie sounds great! Chloe, cancel the donuts that Bill sent, can I have one of those meat pies for breakfast?

Here I am! I've popped in the last couple of days, I just haven't posted. I've been real busy, ya know? I've got my house selling in the next couple of days, summer classes to deal with (and the financing that goes with it), and those nasty storms! If you remember, I work for the phone company. When the storms roll in, we roll out! It gets crazy around here when those rain clouds gather. To top it off, they came up REAL quick around here with LOTS of lightening, and my daughter was out with some friends canoeing on the White River when it all started, so I had to find her and rescue her before she became a crispy critter (that's what Dad's do, right?) too. Oh well, that's all settling down now. The other thing I've had going on is my track plan thread. I'm still working on that monster! I think I'm getting close now though.

But anyways, thanks for noticing! It's kind of nice to know you're missed! [:D]

Finally made it home Thursday night/Friday very early AM. The storms in Detroit slowed everything down. Just happy to have made it home and not spend another night in Detroit. But my internal clock is all messed up. Except for the occasional swings through Detroit, I was on central time and not I can't get my head back on eastern time. Honest'y, it is easier to be three to four time zones off than to be a simple one hour behind.

Anyway, I was right about the hotel in New Orleans. Nothing a wrecking ball couldn't fix. What is sad is how many businesses are gone. Maybe for the best, McDonald's is offerring $10.50 an hour plus 401K and medical.[:0] Nobody around to work.

Also, got the news that a friend's 15 year old son died yesterday morning. I just can't imagine how that could feel. There are no words for something like that. Just trying to be available for him and his family to vent or whatever they need.

Need to run. I think I will be able to actually sit and rest on Sunday.

Afternoon all..Sunny and warm here....I'll have a root beer float and onion rings please....Well I think I made a good deal on E bay at least I'm very happy with it I bid off a bunch of Walther's cornerstone buildings some missing parts for $13.00 they came today I got 10 cornerstone N scale buildings including Merchant Row which seems to be all there it even had a DPM building all 4 walls with it, roundhouse, Clarksville station,Sunrise Mill alot of it is not there, Allied rebuilders some of it not there,Service tanks and 2 stall engine house Guy even wraped a O scale Box car shanty kit in the packing... Needless to say I'm pretty happy....

Afternoon all, iced tea Cleo please,
Hot outside, but it still beats those cold, wet days we’d been having. Haven’t got anything done today, had nothing but problems. Coons got in the shed and made a mess in there with bird and squirrel feed, had to pickup more sticks [still not done], was mowing the folks next doors yard and their mower started acting up again. They just got it back from repairs Mon. My riders still not working and forgot the push mowers out of gas, I give up. Just not been a good day, Oh, well can still hope for tomorrow.

PC , the White river is brown all the way south, kinda looks like the Wabash. You get purple glow when ya swim there.

Paul , Lost some good friends there to. I’ve been having trouble sleeping the last few nights, Mother says it’s because of Memorial Day coming up, and I never sleep well then.

10-12 years ago I took over the Memorial Day services at the legion post on Marshall. We got a list of veteran’s names that had died in the area for the last year, to read off during the services. The first year wasn’t to bad, only bout 30 names. The last year I did it [5 yr.], the list had grown to about 80 names. I almost couldn’t finish reading it.
So this weekend, let us not only remember those who gave their all in service to our country, but also those who stepped up proudly to the call when needed.

Need to get started on something, think I’ll go play with trains for abit. I see Bill T has made it in, Janie, how bout a couple doughnuts and a cup to go

Gumby4, sorry to hear about your fiend’s son! Thoughts and prayers are with you! We lived in New Orleans all our life, until the “Katrina Effect”, we moved out in January. In Sept and Oct. fast food was paying $10 to $12 /hour and sign on bonuses of $1,200 per year paid quarterly. And still, no one is lining up to fill the positions. All the people who did come back already have jobs, and most of the people who left are not coming back! New Orleans is depressing, that’s why we left!

Back to MRR ; The room looks good now all of the walls are clean and the old layout is out in the rain except what we saved mostly buildings the big yard that I built [I think i'll use that as a punesulia [ HA HA HA ] When you only have a 10 by 10 by 8"6 to use you must be carefull. I've been looking real hard at a "G" design so that I can still open the door and also not have to duckunder, you know how hard it is to do that at my age.LOL LOL LOL....

Today's the big day. And I'm patiently trying to widdle away the hours...I took my Marquis out this morning, and spent about an hour and a half washing it inside and out. It's so purdyful right now.[tup][yeah] It's all ready to go.

I got my tuxedo yesterday. Man, it's awesome. Short tux and tails, with pink vest and tie. (How do you like that Fergie?) I can't wait to see my Prom date today.[:D] Wheee, so excited! Fun fun fun!

I'll have pictures up as soon as I can. We'll be taking pictures, and I'll have to get some on the digital camera...And of course, the digital is traveling with me throughout the night.[8D]

Adam: That was an excellent video. Very powerful song as well. I added it to my favorites on my YouTube account. At least you can be sure on one thing...Your next layout will be even better![^]

Jerry: I don't believe there is an AfterProm thing going on. We were trying to go over to my step-sister's date's house to watch a movie in his home theater (He has a Bose system[tup][:p]), but I doubt that is going to happen, because my date can't come, and I'm not sure if step-father will let step-sis be out that late...Although step-bro (who is younger) is out past 1am, 2am, constantly.
