Jim - the house is making progress again with the repairs to the repairs completed, new footings where needed for the porches, electric and plumbing roughed in and all the floors stripped to sub flooring in preparation for the radiant floor heating system. Engineer hired and fix for the "hinged" second floor drawn, done and approved. Because of the storm damage later we were required to start over with new permits. We're closing in on the one year anniversary of the fire but getting there.

Thanks for asking. J.R.

Chloe, just a quick go cup of hot cocoa, please. Just dashing through on the way home. Thanks!

Tom, I'd agree with Todd - there are some things we don't really want to know... Whistling

Rob, like your riverbed - that would look really nice with a trickle of a stream in it, and the driftwood up in the high-water places. Thumbs Up So from what you said, you're experienced in 'debugging', eh? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Galaxy, I'm all for you getting things taken care of (and push/nudge/nag the docs as much as needed until they get your hands more useful for you). Yeah!!

Robby, careful, or those Santa Fe color schemes will grow on you! Wink

JR, good to see you in the Diner - how's the house coming along (and the battling jurisdictions...)?

Lee - you have three mainlines?Wow!! I'm jealous! In my enlarged design, I don't even have double mainline except in a couple of places (single track the rest of the way).

Eric, yah, that kind of 'dating experience' would be a real splash of cold water on things! Oops Sometime I'll have to tell you about my one (and only) date with a gal about 20 years younger than me. (Soooo much an eye-opener...) Oh, to rub it in, we had sunshine most of the day today, and got into the low 70's (F)...Cool

Barry - and since when did we ever need an excuse to go by the LHS? Evil Heck, we're doing our patriotic duty, stimulating their economy!...Wink (Flag, Mom and apple PIE!) (Duck, I hear the catapult go off again... - no, that's not a mallard!)

Jeff and Robby - nice videos! Thumbs UpThumbs Up

Bunch of that new-fangled Dee-See-See talk going around the Diner. Guess someday I'll hafta larn that mysef, eh? (but first to get the wiring hooked up) At least now I know who to send my questions to!

'Bout time for me to head home. We had a powerful leadership conference tonight at church (for all the small group - 'Net' - leaders). Got a chance to talk with my co-leader (Rae) and find out what's been up with her. If you all would pray for her being led to correctly prioritize some of her work and other stuff, I'd appreciate it. She's got another raise, but is working every evening except for Sunday and Monday, and it's making it hard for her to stay in touch with the rest of our Net. She was showing some signs of wear and tear from her work (call center). Galaxy, light one for her too, please! Thank you.

I'll be getting going now. Prayers for those in need or hurting (or both).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

F-unit,

I just bought the Blueline T-1 4-4-4-4

The sound is easy to run, the DCC decoder is plug and play.

Best engine I ever bought.

They have a video on their web site to walk you through installing a DCC decoder and programming the unit with most of the popular DCC systems.

Morgan,

Interesting info on the newer Blueline. I bought one of the early Pennsy M1A's and had an absolute dickens of a time programming it. I spent fully two weeks on and off trying and going back to the BLI forum for hints and advice. I did finally succeed by placing the loco on the main after removing everything else. That was with a MRC Prodigy Advanced. Once programmed and assigned a road number the rest fell in line but it really put me off Bluelines which otherwise seemed a great bargain. If the issues are really alleiviated it makes the reissue of the SP cab forwards in Blueline really tempting.   J.R.

Charlie - are those brake lines made of unobtainium or what? $300.00 seems pretty steep.

Good Evening Diners!

Barry you are certainly correct about this being a busy spot!

Jerry, I read last week that you were looking forward to getting out this  past week-end but I somehow doubt that you were thinking of the ER. Hope that leg heals up soon and doesn't hurt too much. Do you still plan on expanding your RR?

Tom, Congrats on your re-employment. One would get the impression that you are just a little excited about going back to work. Wish I could say the same about my work that I am still supposedly doing.

We have been busy here what with yard work and entertaining. Last week my wife's best friend was in town and so we had her and her partner over for dinner. This past week-end we did the Mother's Day thing as we can't do it on the official day. We had barbequed salmon and the 2 Mums seemed to enjoy it.

My wife is at a cooking class tonight at the place where she volunteers on Tuesdays. She had some trepidation as they are doing something with lobsters which means killing live ones. I told her it is just a large acquatic bug and as it is a bug it doesn't have a brain or nervous system. They don't put them in boiling water but just wring their necks. Not sure if a lobster has a neck but I guess I'll find out when I pick her up later tonight.

Last week I took my car in for an oil change. I had a 9:30 appointment but at 10:30 my car hadn't even moved so I asked for my keys back and let them know I wasn't happy. Later that day I had a  call from the service department saying they wanted to make it right so I took the car back the next morning. Well they did make it right as I got a free oil change and so saved $50! I take it to the dealership so I guess loyalty can have a reward. I did find out too that I need to spend about a grand on a timing belt, ball joint, and brake hoses. Man are those brake hoses expensive! $300 for just the front ones.

Nothing new on the RR front. I did run my SW8 around for a while last Friday but that is about it.

Have a good evening or I guess night as evening is just about done.

Evening Gang: It's been a while since I've been in. this re-tirement is really toooooo much work.

Our live steam meet was a couple of weeks ago. It was a really great meet with a bunch of both diesel and steam tunning. I didn't run since I was sick with a cold and there was already too much traffic on the line. Last week we hosted  a group of families that had addopted kids from the Leana Pope home. they were a great bunch and we asked them to come back again. the kids were really well behaved which is a rarity these days.

Well it's getting late and tomorrow is a veery early wake up.

Good Night All

T. White the new blue line's Don't have DCC and they are hard to put in and get the sound to work right

Not with the blueline NKP 587 I have. There's a DCC quickplug for the motor, the sound is supplied in th engine. The space isn't all that roomy, I'll give you that. But it's easy to plug in. Put it on the programming (for anyone e;se in DCC) and tell the programming track to program all decoders on it as the number, that will sync up the motor control and the sound control.

Barry, good to see others also have to babysit pets....

This time "Lady" went under the bed for the first day and "Sweetpea" made herself at home on my lap!! "Sweetpea' is the one who, if picked up, will give you the whiney two year old---"I don't wanna!'---complaint---as in two definite MMM--MMMM's. "Lady" will go around like the demure lady she is, all shy for a day, then, be the schmoozer for the rest of the time-----she tried to take over my backpack twice this time!!LOL!!Whistling

Evenin' folks!

ewl01
Ray - my cats get all fussy when I've been gone for a few days.  My close friend takes good care of them, I guess they miss the attention they get when I'm home.

My sisters cat gets angry and sad....  Today she batted my shoe (Luck I wear leather sneakers) and then got about 2 foot away from me and looked up and started to mew.  Then she would look down.  She did this several times and we had a "conversation".  I think she was trying to tell me that she misses her "human" and she is sad.  She sure sounded that way.  My sister will be back in a couple of days.  Even though we think of cats as being independent, they are known to get depressed and grieve when their human servant isn't around for long periods of time.  I almost lost one of my cats because of it.  He is sitting right next to me now, and reaches over every now and then to see if I will pay attention.......  Both my boys absolutely adore my pet sitter (she brings them catnip.....).  Barry, good to see others also have to babysit pets....Wink

Well, the interviews and meeting are over. Zzz   We interviewed 11 excellent young people for the scholarships, but had decided going oin that we would only give out four $1000 scholarships this year.  Interestingly enough we picked the 4 winners on the first ballot.  Now to get the plans done for the dinner to honor them.  Only a few of the candidates were former students of mine.  Getting to the point where I won't know any of them and will just be another "old guy" on the committee.  Many of the kids come in, see me, and have a big grin on their face as they know they have a friend on the committee..........

Blood draw tomorrow, so nothing but water for the rest of the evening.  Zoe a tall glass of swamp water if you please.  No lemon, just ice!

Prayers for all in need of healing and for those dealing with any troubles!  Hope you all have a great night!

(edit) OK, I got the top of the page, so eat up!  Doesn't seem fair though that I have to sit and watch the rest of eat when I can't have anything........Grumpy

Barry, what area are you modeling?  I have a few cattle cars myself; the area I model transported live and dressed meats from Chicago to New York City.  I found in a video they had a “meat train” that ran twice daily (except Sundays) composed of refers and live stock cars.

Mostly the American high plains/Canadian prairies(N.Dakota, Manitba, Montana, Saskatchewan--). In that vicinity------they'd take the cattle from stockpens( another minor detail I forgotGrumpy) and bring them to places like Chicago---although I'm shying away from BIG urban centers----Whistling

LSWrr
Have you seen the cattle sound decoders yet???

That would be fun!!! Another thing to scare 'Spring' with!!Smile,Wink, & Grin

Have you seen the cattle sound decoders yet???  Pigs, horses, chickens, and cows.  The decoder can be installed in a livestock car and randomly it will play animal noises.

TomW--Congratulations on the retirement rehirement! Or summat. How are the two 'little one's' doing? Oh oh I hear "Meh Meh" comments---oh well there goes the typing speed back to hunt/peck mode.

Lee-I just discovered that the area I'm supposedly modelling also did a lot of exporting of cattle---Dunce Did I think to get ANY stock cars?---NNNOOOOOOBanged Head--so now I have another excuse---aherm---reason to visit the FLHS----heeheeheeWhistling

Ray- Spent the past few days in Woodstock cat sitting sisters two little ones "Lady" and "Sweetpea". She had a show ans sale in Dundas ON to go to and I had the excuse of seeing a couple of friends about reforming a band we had. Seems there is enough interest in it after we trotted out a bunch of covers/originals at a club in town. All 5 of us play at least 3 instruments a piece. And the drummer--he does all sorts of electronic effects with ye ol''ring modulators' and such---he can trigger all kinds of stuff through those kits---heeheeheeMischiefWhistling

Well---I better pay some attention to the little 'Spring' here----Smile,Wink, & Grin

Quite honestly, I didn't see anything wrong with what you said. I get worse than that from my sister's kids. You have nothing to be sorry about. I do appreciate it though.

Jerry - nice that the Dr sends someone to you to take care of your leg. Heal quick..

Jeff - I like that Lackawanna car.  That road must be something to tear a return line on that P/S.

Ray - my cats get all fussy when I've been gone for a few days.  My close friend takes good care of them, I guess they miss the attention they get when I'm home.

RobbyP - Nice video!  Looks like you have a very nice layout there..  Mine looks good too.... in my head!!

Been busy with some layout video, and trying to finish up the "weathering" on th eSanta Fe engine.  SO.......I will take a sweet tea, and a slice of pecan pie.  Need some energy!!!!!!

Well heres a quick video of my layout.  I went for the "sunset" look.  I will try to get another video later.  I also added a light to the cement plant.  I will try to get a shot of it tomorrow.

Here's the video.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe just a bran muffin and a cup of dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug if you please.  Got a blood draw tomorrow moring so I best behave myself this morning..........

Got an email this morning asking me to do sound for the Middle School Chorus concert this Thursday so I will have a busy week.  This evening the MLK Committee will interview 11 candidates for Martin Luther King Scholarships.  From the looks of the applications, we will really have our work cut out to choose 4 or 5 of them to get scholarships.  This is the best group of kids I have seen in the 20+ years I have been with the committee.  That's a good thing I guess. Smile

Somebody asked about my sister's cat yesterday.  A couple years back my sister got a local teenager who was to go over to her house and take care of the cat.  She forgot and the poor thing went without food or water for several days until I showed up to water her plants.  It is a very good thing I showed up when I did as she wouldn't have lasted much longer.  After that I have taken it upon myself to drive up there (15 miles one way) and see that the cat is alright and feed her.  Of course the cat still blames me for the time she didn't get fed and is just now starting to act almost agreeable to having me around......  The cat is 14 years old and my sister found out that her kidneys are starting to fail (had blood test at the vets a month ago).  So I have made peace with the little monster and don't really mind taking care of her.  But it is a nusiance every day when my sister is gone someplace.

The Crab Apple and the Flowering Quince trees are in blossom in my front yard.  May take a photo or two if I get a chance.

Won't be much going on on the layout for the rest of this week with the concert coming up, but I am still waiting for supplies to arrive from Walther's Out Of Stock anyway.......  LHS says they should be in this week.

Hope you all have a great day!

Morning All!

Geez, almost lunch time already?  Umm, how about a grilled cheese w/ bacon and a decaf?  Thanks!

Rainy and chilly, damp of course.... day 2 of 5 from what the prognosticators say.  Well, Wednesday may be 'only' cloudy.

The basement's too damp for painting, maybe I can do some gluing done on the freight car unloading building.  Been thinking a while on how that one is going to come out.

Jim - I did date a woman around my age from an old job, went out a few times, had fun.... things seemed to be going well until the one night I met her at a club (planned)... "Hi Eric! This is my husband Gary!"  Gary it seems, traveled a lot in his job.  Needless to say I ask first now.......

Now as far as younger women (within reason, 10-11 yrs)... I'm always open..... and have nothing to hide.

Okay, enough of that.   Meeting week FD tonight FA tomorrow, late nights.

Later all, Eric

***Ole Timer, how about posting a pic or two? Or, where would one find your website? Hope the rain stops and the sun comes out soon so you can get back outside. I have always enjoyed working outside (wildlife art) and most of my early works have bugs in the paint.Laugh

Thanks for all the compliments on the wife's riverbed guys. Hope you still think it's alright when finished. Have to do some other work today first but this evening I plan on starting a wire frame for the mountains that will surround the river.

Have a good day all.

Finally getting the detailing started on some pieces ... I use weathering powders mostly ... and an air brush . Like to do it outside under my maple tree but this darn rain about everyday has stopped that . Only have one car detailed inside ... my stock car with wood stalls and pigs ... most of my cars are coal and freight . I don't own any passenger ones .

Good morning all,
Tom, I feel the same way.  I have 5 Mantua steam locomotives, in great shape but they all need new motors and at $28 each for motors I might as well hang on to them, I doubt anyone would buy them for $60 each plus shipping.

Dale finished the Walther’s team track for me last night, he does very nice work.  I dropped off 4 rolling stock kits for him to work on.

This weekend I worked debugging the mainlines; now everyone (locomotives) are happy and spent the afternoon running trains.  Next step is debugging the 3rd mainline.

I test pulled with the Bachman Spectrum 2-10-2 yesterday and I’m up to 26 cars with no problems.  I’ll continue pulling until the wheels slip.  I think I’ll post a product review section on my web site.  Real tests done by real molders.
Ok time to go back to work…..

Good Morning,

May I have a regular coffee and a toasted hard roll please? Haven't been by for a while lately between the shop, races and just a regular old lack of motivation. No model railroading lately either as life just got in the way. Other than being totally busy I have no complaints and seeing Jeff and Galaxy compare notes makes me realize how easy I have it with my carpel tunnel issues.

Rob - the river is going to look great between the bed and the surrounding terrain. Keep us posted.

Gotta run and get things started in the shop. At some point I'll try to get an idea what's been up in here.                     Catch y'all later.    J.R.

Hi Jeffrey. I know you have nerve damage from diabetes. I appreciate that. I also appreciate your breathing problems and other disabilities, as I think you do mine. Often, we, you and I, can commiserate with each other. When I wake up in the morning my arms are numb from just below the shoulder all the way down. I don't even feel pressure. It is then I could chew off a finger and not know it. It doesn't matter which position I sleep in. Of course I also can't move them very well and have to wait for the pins and needles to come back by trying to hold my arms straight out in front of me. The wrist braces help some, but not all the time and not all that much. I am lucky, however, that hopefully the surgery could fix that for me, while you may continue to suffer.

Sounds like you need the surgery. I can move my arms all right first thing in the morning and sometimes have the pins and needles. I don't need to use wrist braces yet but I can see that coming. For me my ankles and feet are the major problem. I can step on a 40D nail (5") and not know it even if it went all the way through my foot. So yeah, I understand your problem.

Yeah, but I used to be a good typer. I know sometimes my right wrist gets sore quicker than other times. I was shocked when I really looked at how my handwriting had changed and was almost not readable anymore. I've noticed it, but never really studied it like I did when at the DR.s office. The important thing now is that we do something about it to solve the problem. I can't wait for it to happen! No more tingly or pins and needles hands. And I won't feel the nerve get twinged every time I cut up my dinner. That is assuming my reg DR. sets me up to do something about it. If anybody is reluctant, I'm gonna press for it! Hopefully Thursday I will find out.

It could be worse. You could have no feeling in your hands at all except for pressure. That's no picnic, believe me.

Prayer candle will be lit later today when we return home for a friend of ours and anyone else needing prayers and thoughts.\

Have a great day everyone!Cool

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Good morning.

It's 66 and cloudy. The high will be around 83 and it will be partly cloudy.

Looked at the road damage to the bottom of my car yesterday. Looks like one of the power steering lines was torn open. Looks like the low pressure line. That means it can be easily fixed. Problem is I can't get at it until I can get the car over a pit or a ditch. Being that the ditch is the more practical choice (and the closest) I'll have to wait for it to dry out some. We got about four days worth of rain in ten hours yesterday so the ditches were running level with the roads for a while and in some places the roads were underwater. I did a little more work on the covered hopper and made it a little grimier. Looks like I may be mowing my sisters yard today. Her mower still won't start. As for what else I'll be doing today, it's an open book. I'll know when I get there.

TMarsh
Jeff- I'll bet you muttered a few less than kind remarks about the Parish roads. Oh and I've been down your way a few times (Ft Polk and Alexandria) You have a good public transportation system. Grab a flying bug and hang on! Laugh

Even if that were possible I wouldn't do it. Them bugs end up splattered on the windshield too often.
