Good evening everybody, Chloe...a burger and 7-Up please and thankyou...

JimRCGMO
So this morning when I start up my computer, I see that my login window has 'Administrator' as the name, and (my specific computer, with some 4-digit #, maybe their inventory number for the 'puter) in the place where the network I usually log into would be. (The network name was there as another choice - in the pulldown menu for the network/computer choice). It might just be that the IT/MIS guys - in preparation for their moving the tail end of this week to the other building the company had bought (along with our billing dept. and the treasurer - just installed stuff so they could troubleshoot from the other building. Or would I be getting paranoid....? Smile,Wink, & Grin Heck, they wouldn't find anything in my computer directories but a chess game (for the slow, end of the day, times).

JIM: First, keep in mind that I am a 100% certified pessimist. I firmly believe in Murphy's Law. I also expect all things to go sour at any moment. I'm always looking for the crap sandwich. So, to me, that sure sounds like a "fishing trip." A buddy had his entire company e-mail looked at after he left the job. The idiot "Director" apparently wanted to find out what his former employee had been saying about him. I don't think he liked what he read... Whistling

The chess game, believe it or not, could be an issue for you. The third and final time I hired-on at the community college as the "temporary campus paramedic," I was advised strongly to NOT go on-line or download ANYTHING. I was catching heat for a lot of things left behind by the various work-study students which had been on the 'pooter for the previous 2-3 years. The only things I had "installed," was a political screensaver during the 2004 election cycle, and a screen shot from "EMERGENCY!" which I used as the wallpaper under MY log-in. My guess is my politics differed from the "boss." As for websites: fire, EMS, eBay, weather radar, Walthers, and Trains.com were it for the times (most of the time) when I was literally sitting there just twiddling my thumbs.

But, it just takes the right p'-er head at the wrong time to see "something" and make a federal case out of it.

Good luck to ya.

ChrisEight Ball

BTW: the p'-er head who was my "boss" in Campus Health used to like to park his admissions dept. car in the Campus Health Nurse/Paramedic parking spot. This often meant I had to park much, much farther away from the office. Not good if an emergency response was required (and not within walking/jogging distance). After several times of politely and professionally asking him to NOT park there, and reminding him of how critical even seconds of delay can be in a true emergency... I finally told him flat-out that if he parked there again, I would urinate on his car. I said this with a half-smile...leaving him wondering if I was joking or serious.Mischief

Must've worked, he finally quit parking there.

Good Evening, Chloe - I'll have a hot fudge sundae (with some Spanish peanuts on top), please, with a cup of coffee. Thanks!

First off, thank you to everyone for the prayers, encouragement and the emails. That's one of the great things about this Diner. Yeah!! Oh, and I very rarely beat myself up (particularly if there was little or nothing I can think of that I would've done differently. When I mess(TM) up, I mostly am aware of what I did. But beat myself up, almost never!

Vincent - sorry to hear about you losing Duke. He looks like he was a fun and energetic dog. Never a good time to lose one of our furry friends...Angel

I'll apologize to anyone I missed while I was pouting in the back booth yesterday. I feel somewhat better today, and I'd decided I would minimize contact with certain persons unless needed, and not badmouth anyone to others. I did notice one thing when I came in this morning - you Diners know how the network login for XP is? Name and computer or network name? Well, I had found out in the past that if someone else uses the computer when you're away and then logs out, when you come back and restart the computer (next day, or whenever), the name that by default appears (and the computer or network name) in the login window will be whoever used it last.

Not a bad day - misting rain in the morning, and it moved on out by some time in the afternoon. Kinda cool, though, by quitting time. Now, if we could get some more days of sunshine together in a row...Cool

Corey, LOVE your bridges - I agree with Jeff, that'll be a knockout piece for your layout when you finish them up. Makes you wonder what one of the bridge designers (either the auto or the train one, whichever came second) were thinking when they built the second bridge of the two.Confused

Barry - big mouth? Unless I was talking about your appetite, I don't recall that one. Wink

Garry, that is one strange thing, all right! At first, I was thinking: "Makeshift engine sheds? Somebody bought them at surplus and is making their own trailer park?....?"Whistling

Rob, I usually just wanna go hide in my cave (as John Gray might describe it) a while and lean on the Big Boss a while. It often helps me let go of things more easily. How's that riverbed coming along? Oh, that PacificCoastAirlineRR site is a good one! Thumbs Up

BridgeTom, I saw on the news this morning that California was already having their first hillside fire of the 'season'. Sheesh - you folks need a little break out there on your weather! Oh, I'd looked up the other day about Cinco de Mayo and saw pretty much what you wrote - that it isn't celebrated much except NOTB (in the USA). I find it very politician-ey that our Prez decided to celebrate it a day early - what is up with that? Hey, I'm a traditionalist about my holidays and celebrations - I consider May 30th as the TRUE Memorial Day, for example. SoapBox Nice shot of UffDah! Thumbs Up By the way, Tom - is that going to be your 'job interview' over those beers? Laugh

I have been wondering about our SOTB neighbor, Ed. And as Johnboy mentioned, some others have been MIA for a while. Now, Fergie may be off putting suntan lotion on a few polar bears who are adjusting to 'climate change'....Whistling

Galaxy, will be keeping your doctor's visit in the morning in my prayers - hey, maybe all they need is to strap a 9v. battery and some leads on the back of your hand? We could hope! AngelAngel Hope your car stuff gets figured out and fixed at minimal cost and time for you.

Robby, one unfortunate thing currently is, for one of the two workers for crisis and walk-in services (I'm one, Jason's the other), it means the other one gets to cover it all by himself. Having been that way for several months before they added Ryan, I'm reluctant to stick him with that for several days (except for the one or two times a week that I take one whole week off - between Christmas and New Year's usually). I am supposed to be taking a Monday off next month (I think), just because. We crisis workers tend to stick together (and help out each other) a lot. Hey, good night of it at the casion! Now, if you could do that every time you went....maybe you'd be able to retire a bit sooner!

Todd, actually, I'd heard the 'how to start your day' thing before, and I used it today with one (maybe two) of my outpatient clients, too. Thanks!

HEY, PC - let's have a gradjeration party for you! YEAH!!! And I'd bet that your degree must be from a church-related college, if they have a dual major in Leadership & Ministry, coupled with Business Ethics - that's almost an oxymoron (in the business world, anyway)...

Aw, Jeff, you beat me to it!Smile,Wink, & Grin So, when will the party be, Diners?

Jerry - that looks like a good test track - is that the Kadee test thingee?

Ray, I got a copy of the write-up, which will go with my previous annual assessments and other stuff (just in case). I also this morning sent an email to our most helpful IT/MIS guy, asking him about the 'Administrator' login thing - and CC'ed a copy to my 'home' email. If anyone was 'watching', I wanted them to know I am forwarding copies any pertinent issues offsite...Whistling I hear you on the Ph.D's and how some act about them - one of my favorite profs in college didn't get his Ph.D. because he had a heart attack (maybe stress-induced), and decided to lighten up some. He actually made psychology statistics a fun course! Wow!! And congratulations to your high-placed son!

Eric, hang in there yourself. For me, it's been years since I celebrated Mothers' Day, since Mom died in 1977, one Grandma years before that, and my other Grandma a few years after Mom. I do have something I wrote a while back that l'll be sending you. Hopefully it may resonate some for you.

About time for me to head home - tomorrow is (ta da....)

$$ P A Y D A Y ! ! $$

- which will be nice. Big Smile Now, so long as I have some LHS/MRR money left over after the bills...

Prayers for health, for comfort and for healing for you Diners and loved ones (two or four-legged).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Know the feelings all too well.......  Been there, done that.  Only it was my wife instead of my parents.  They came much later but still were hard to lose.  Be sure to save those sound bytes as they will become a comfort over time.  I so wish I had anything with my wife's voice on it.  It would be great to play for my granddaughters when they are a bit older.  I have a doll that my wife made several years before she died that will go to my oldest granddaughter, and there is another one that an old friend has made by my wife that will go to my second granddaughter.  The hand crocheted Christmas tree ornaments have already been passed on to our sons.   I will keep you in my prayers this Sunday!  May you be blessed with the very best of memories of both your parents!

Ooooo, Oooooo!  I almost forgot to tell you.  My youngest son called tonight to say that he has accepted the Argonne Lab job.  He is now officially Director of Communications for them (there is more to the title, but I can't remember it right at the moment).  He may be able to put me in a "high class" nursing home in a few years.............Whistling

Just got off the phone with the mother of one of our Scholarship winners.  She is one of my students from many years ago and was a great kid and is now a wonderful lady.  This is the third one of her children (that's 3 out of 3) to receive the MLK Scholarship!  She works at Head Start in Geneva and has done a lot for many, many kids!  We had a great conversation.

Hope all of you have a great night.  I'll sit in the front window booth for a while and watch the rain falling outside.  May get a half inch of rain tonight here in the Finger lakes!

Jeff - Nice units, the GE and EMD.  I too am a bit surprised to see the UP in your area.  Hey, it's your road, I'd do the same thing.  Saw your question on the forum about the 'discs', they do look odd.  I like the flying saucer comments that were made.. you have previous government experience????

Only that I was with a special forces detachment for a while. The only thing I have in common with the government now is a check.

Barry... and Jeff....  I wish I had gone the Archaeology/Anthropology route.  More interesting and (at least at my school) there is no research seminar.  It's the same as doing a Masters Thesis, but for a Bachelors degree.  Working full time makes it a bit hard doing all the reading and research required..... I'll give it another shot this fall... I had to drop it this semester because of my folks....

It seems some of our lives are matching the weather, dark and depressing....

Vince - Sorry about your dog, I can't add much more than has already been said.  Death seems to visit us at the most inopportune time....anytime.

Jim - I agree with your quote marks in regards to the beings in charge... been there myself and it's hard to keep a sane thought in one's head.

The sun came out for about 35 minutes today.... then it disappeared again.  More rain for the next 2 days.  That's the one problem living on the coast.  It doesn't matter if Jeff,  or Rob, or Jim sends it... the weather always winds up here...  on the Atlantic Coast.

Which finally brings me to......

Rob - I deleted a comment on the foam.... drywall compound probably needs to be thickened a bit for making rockfaces.  Looks promising.

Corey!!!  I may have already said this.... Incredible!!!! The bushes look fine by the way.  Your attention to recreating the details in the photos is amazing.  And you were worried!!!!

Ah well, enough of this.  I've been writing onand off for 50 mminuts now.

Good Night, God Bless..... If I wake in the morning, I've beat the devil another day...

Jim in todays market it isn't good idea to get boss mad at you. back up and as the saying goes as I'm sure it fits a lot of us from time to time especially me " engage brain befor putting mouth into motion. " Even if you were not wrong it sounds like you have a boss that wants to set examples out of people so others will obey him but all that gets done is people get affraid to say anything around paople like that because of fear. If I understand you right he took you wrong. the lord always guides us in the right direction even thou it may not seem it at the time. will email you a little story later.

Speaking of email B C did you get my email?

well talk to you all later

Tom , the arch bridge is three kits into one.  They are the Walthers, arched roadway bridge.  It comes with plans to build them together to form one bridge.  I bought them on sale for fifteen a piece.  It was a darn near perfect kit for my bridge.  I wish it was a little longer with lower arches, but I'm not complaining.  Even the guard rails are perfect.  Thanks for the compliment and the direction.

Evening all.

Spring day out here in SunnyCal--82 down here in the Valley, and fifty miles east in the Sierra, it's in the 50's and raining like crazy.  Go figure.

Had one of my new signals go 'blooey' today when I turned it on.  No, it didn't blow the bulb, but there seems to be a little problem with the on-off switch.  Whoopee.  Thank God I've got some extra switches, I'll have to play around with them a little.  So right now, Sierra City Junction has suddenly become "Dark Territory."  Sounds ominous, doesn't it?

Corey:  I love those bridges.  REALLY nice work!  Is that highway arch bridge a kit or scratch?  It's really impressive.  As to 'planting' the hillside, your idea of using the Scenic Express armatures sounds pretty good.  I don't know if this helps, but I think there was an article in MR some months back about planting 'forests' on steep slopes.

Barry:  Ah, the "Dead Man's" theory of History.  When I taught at St. Francis, one of the History teachers was a 'Revisionist' who taught from a 'Feminist' point of view.  Nothing against that, she's a very cool lady and knows her stuff.  But we were all gathered around the lunch table one time, discussing a point in 19th Century History--the "Robber Barons".  I happened to mention something about the "Big Four" of the Central Pacific Railroad and she grinned and said, "Ah, you like the Dead White Man's Version."  I just grinned and said, "Yah.  After all, they were THERE!"  She blinked at me, and then the table cracked up.  Her along with the rest of us.

Phil:  Congratulations on the Bachelor's!  Don't you feel great that you survived jumping through all of those Academic Hoops?  Seriously, I wish you well and good fortune.  I remember when I got my Master's in Music, I just grinned at my Advisor and said, "Thank you so much, I hope I never have to look at you again in my lifetime."  Then we went out and had a couple of beers, LOL!   Yes, after that, we're still very good friends.

Uff-Dah the Viking had a coughing spell this morning.  Not a big one, but I've got to see if they continue.  If they do, it's back to the Vet's for another Pregnozone shot.  I will of course, forewarn them.  Uff-Dah does not take kindly to people prodding and poking him.   He has a reputation at the Vet's.  ("DON YOUR ARMOR, THE NORWEGIAN'S COMING BACK!").   At least Uff-Dah and myhself have one thing in common, Pollen is not our friend, LOL!

Well, heading back to the MR to see about that signal switch.  The Yuba River Sub does NOT take kindly to suddenly going back into Dark Territory, after all the work I spent updating it to the early 1940's, LOL!. Confused

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Tom Big Smile

Rob,

You can try wire brushing the foam a bit (somewhere inconspicuous first just in case) to rough it up and deskin it. Can you sift and bake some real rocks and dirt out of the yard and add it over some thick latex paint in places? (Kilz undercoat with ink added works well for grey rock). The sheet rock compound also works with sand or the small gravel added over top. If you vary techniques you can get that layered rock look with a little patience. Add some ground foam and cover in places where debris would build up and you might have your canyon with character.  J.R. Oh yeah and you usually leave the water for very last so you don't get debris stuck in it.

Question: What dirt cheap material will work to sculpt rocks and rocky outcrops out of? I do have some sheetrock joint compound, if that would work? Thanks for any suggestions.

Coffee in a Soggy Southern mug, please & thanks.

***Johnboy, the (N) trestles are put aside. Those smaller two (HO) trestles are being used in the wife's river canyon. I might use the large (HO) one as part of a shelf display I haven't finished yet. Might end up selling off the (N) trestles to recoop some train funds.

***Jeffrey, nice collection there and the display is perfect.

***Sawyer, just remember school, soccer, and girlfriends are fleeting, while model RR'ing lasts a lifetime. (but do enjoy those other things while you can) Cool

Wife wants me to create "rocks and rocky surfaces" on the foam canyon. She doesn't really like it as it looks presently. I started working on this with the tile adhesive (which I still have tons of), but I'm not happy with the results I'm getting. Question: What dirt cheap material will work to sculpt rocks and rocky outcrops out of? I do have some sheetrock joint compound, if that would work? Thanks for any suggestions.

No such luck........

I'm working on a BS in History out of pocket, 8 yrs so far......

I did it all in night classes.  I started in spring 2004.  I'll be getting a Bachelor Of Science Degree, with a dual major in Leadership & Ministry and Business & Ethics, and a minor in Systematic Theology with an emphasis on Cosmogony.

Afternoon everyone!

Been a busy, busy day so far and I still have lots that has to be done.  Been at school for rehearsals most of the day and then up to Canandaigua to feed the cat and make sure all is well.  My sister should be returning this evening so at least I won't have that to do again for a while.

PC and ewl01, you have probably heard the story about the 2 farmers Ezra and Zeke talkin' over the back fence.

Ezra - You know there Zeke, I don't rightly know what it is that our boys is doin' at that there fancy college.

Zeke - Well sir, they's there getting somethin' they call DEE-GREES.

Ezra - what them?

Zeke - Well, the firstist one theys get is one called a BS, an you know what that stands for.

Ezra - Shore do!

Zeke - Then they studies real hard and spends a lot more time and they gets another one that's higher called an MS.  That stands for "More of the Same".

Ezra - Uh-huh.

Zeke - And then if they studies really, really hard and spends a lot more time workin' real, real hard, they getts the highest Dee-Gree possible!  An that they calls a PHD!

Ezra - Well whats that?

Zeke - It stands for "Piled Higher an Deeper!"

Oh and yes I have one of those "More of the Same" ones (almost 2).  Paid for it all by myself too...........Whistling

I know a good many people with that PHD thingy too.  Most have been friends for years before I found out that they were called Dr. so and so.  They tend to be great people.  The ones that are almost to a one complete idiots are the ones that always use the term Dr. and have the letters PHD  (Meaning, "hello I am much more important than you) after their names at all times.  I only 2 people I have ever worked for or with had that problem................

Jim, hope everything works out well at work!  If you haven't already, start a file with everything that happened as you remember it, date it and keep it in a folder at home.  Anything new that happens, do the same.  I had problems with one of the PHDs mentioned above at School over several years.  He threatened me, tried to coerce me on several occasions, and was genuinely abrasive.  Every time I had an incident, I wrote it up, dated it, and kept it in a file.  After he was convinced to .... ah..... retire (yep that's the right word) I never disposed of the folder.  My next principle was one of the greatest ladies to work for imaginable.  When I retired and was cleaning out my room I ran across the folder, took it home, and read it page by page.  Laughed at some of the stupid things that that guy did and said so hard I cried!  Still have that folder around here someplace.  I may write a book..........  My FIL used to have a saying on a poster at his house that read, "When arguing with an idiot, make sure he (she) is not similarly occupied".  Every time I got in one of those situations I tried to remember that poster.........Smile,Wink, & Grin

Got to get everything together for Deacons tonight at Church, so I best finish my RBF and get to w**k.

Boy, this diner is getting real popular! GO away for  a day and several pages added! They like to cut it off after about 75 pages and we are already at 25! It's great, but we may have to add on to the diner!

Thats a good kind of problem!

I only skim-read all there was there, so I'm sorry to anyone I should have commented back to, and don't here.

I've been doing the same thing.  I've been so busy lately with school and all that I just haven't been around a lot.  Hope things lighten up soon.  I get my Bachelors Degree in a little over a week, so that should help ease the tensions.  Now, if I could only get my work to quit bugging me but keep paying me........
