Good evening all.

Jeff, your SD27J could be placed in the "plausible realsim" category. I know their were some interesting "kit bashings" with the real world. Creations came from MK Rail (later called Boise Locomotive) and also from VMV of Paducah. Santa Fe (as you note) and other roads did some of that. Rock Island had some really intersting "kitbashes".

PC ...You can see my 1/87 velocipede in the photo below. Looks like the workers need to repair shed doors instead of having  bull session.

Happy Model Railroading........

Nope, I mean the 60ft PRR messenger car they rigged with a bike rack to take passengers up and peddle back. But I'd take the velocopede too.

I think I'd rather take the velocipede, but the bike car is cool too.

I heartily agree. But I seemed to remember you being a bike rider in your often dwindling sparetime.

Oh, and I agree with a lot of you:  How come I'm clear across the COUNTRY from someone who sounds like the best sound engineer on the planet? Shock

Nah!  Just the most excited and happiest at the moment.  We are very, very, lucky to have a Superintendent of Schools who understands the value of music in the curriculum and the life of the students.  An example is the hiring of the bassist for the day.....!  Glad you had a great rehearsal, and I do wish that I could be there to hear the service Wednesday!  Sounds like it will be impressive.

You know if we could get all the musicians we have here in the diner together to form a band.......  Hmmm?  It would have just about everything covered.  Liturgical, Jazz, Rock, Heavy Metal, Tradition Folk and Classical.........  Wonder what we could call ourselves? Whistling

OK I have to get some Zzz.  See you sometime tomorrow.

Evening all from so-far mild SunnyCal.  High of 80 here today, no breezes (which means no Pollen) but we're in for a heat wave come Saturday and Sunday.  As I told you, possible 105 or so by Sunday.  Whoopee!

My prayers to those of you in the midwest that got caught in that horrible line of thunderstorms/tornadoes.  I hope if there was damage, that you escaped it.  I saw the Doppler of those storms, and it looked horrendous!

Well, had a brief reherasal at the school with the incoming LIturgy Workshop choir (this is reserved for Senior, only) and Fr. Wanser has an EXCEPTIONAL group coming in.  Ed Trafton and I kinda/sorta worked out the keyboard settings for me to do at Baccaluareate, next week, and it's going to be fun.  Pipe-organ and strings.  Not together, you understand, but spaced through the music.  I'm glad I had the chance to work out on the keyboard today--we'll do some more tomorrow--because the technique is totally different from playing the piano.  You have to sort of slide from note to note, instead of just placing your fingers on the keys.  By the time we finished, I felt very comfortable.  Another rehearsal tomorrow morning, then the BIG one Tuesday, and then the Big Blast Wednesday evening.  Dang, it's good to be back! Tongue

"Uff Dah" and Spooky are well--I think she's a little jealous, because when the vet weighed Uff-Dah yesterday, he was 21 pounds.  Spooky's only 18.  But as I said, she's walking around with her "I still have MY coat, where did HIS go?" look.  Uff-Dah could care less, just as long as his bowl's full, LOL!

Jeff:  Wise decision by your doctor, I think.  Incredible how some side-effects of medication can hit you after some years of taking it.  Let's see if that swelling goes down.  I had to go off of one blood-pressure medication after taking it for almost 20 years, because it suddenly reacted by swelling my tongue to the point I could barely breathe.  It happens.  Hope going off that medication gets your legs down soon.

Tom P:  Sign - Welcome to the forum.  As to the reefer cars and Riverside produce, I would think that since Riverside was on the original SP "Sunset Route" out of LA, that the original cars would have been early PFE wood reefers.  I know that the SP/UP Pacific Fruit Express company was formed before the 20th Century, originally to provide refrigerator car service from the Sacramento/San Joaquin/Salinas Valleys to the eastern markets via the "Overland" route, so I would think that with Riverside being on a primary SP route, the same cars would have been used.  I know that SP always had a large produce business on their "Sunset" route.   You might check with the Riverside Historical Society, or Google "Pacific Fruit Express" to see if I'm in the ball-park.  What era are you modeling, anyway?  I think we'd all be interested.

Well, have to go practice my 'strings' and 'organ' (on my grand piano, LOL!) and then go out and see what I want to do this weekend on the MR (I mean, BESIDES run trains!)

Oh, and I agree with a lot of you:  How come I'm clear across the COUNTRY from someone who sounds like the best sound engineer on the planet? Shock

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Sorry to go on like this, but if you knew how many years I struggled to help bring the music department at this school forward to where they were performing to this level.....  It does my heart good to see the level of accomplishment  that is happening.  This was the best High School concert I have ever been to in Geneva and one of the best Vocal concerts I have heard in any High School.  If you think I am on an adrenaline high, you haven't even come close!!!

Evenin' all, (munch, chew, munch, chew) Sorry about the mouth full. Just baked a Rhubarb custard PIE! Mmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm. Is it good. I've brought in plenty and the milks fresh. Got Mom taken care of. Went to H-L and got some W S horses for the corral behind the Livery. 40% off with coupon of course.

Nittany- I hear ya on the mistakes with the stuff that's either in short supply of expensive. Me too.

Robby-Engine house looks pretty good so far.

Galaxy- Just train boxes? Amateur. I find myself keeping the boxes the car and structure kits come in. I just ran across the box the controller came in. Why do I keep these things?

Jeff- I hope that solves the problem and it's nothing more serious. Of course you have to find another pain med and look for side effects for that. Vicious circle. You? Play around with the unusual? Hm, I hadn't noticed. Oh and Yeeeees, (scratching chin and squinting eyes) You do seem to know just when to duck or go to the back room.

Tom Parsons-Sign - Welcome

Inch- Sounds like you got a bit more rain than we did. I guess nothing got tore up too bad from the wind.

PC-I'd love to ride that thing too. Only problem would be, remember when you were a kid, and you'd get pedaling on the tricycle so fast your feet would come off the pedals? That'd be me. Only with the Southbound 4:30 screaming down on me from behind!! Laugh

Ray-"Sorry to go on like this"? Nah, don't be. You're happy and rightfully so. It makes me happy to hear about it.

Jerry didn't come in for breakfast this morn. Hope the storms didn't affect him.

Evenin' folks!!!

Welcome to the diner Tom Parsons!  Stop in and enjoy the chat often!  You might want to ask that question over in the Prototype information section of the Model Railroad Forums (just click on "Model Railroad Forums" and you will find it).  You will most probably get a quick answer to it over there.

What a day!  Much better all told than yesterday.  My truck went in to the dealers for repair this afternoon and all it was was rusty calipers ( I thought they were replaced when I had the brake work done last fall.....).  I will most probably have them done before I start driving the truck out to camp this summer. I don't drive it often (which is also part of the problem with the old calipers).  So the truck is up and running again.... Of course I had already packed half of the stuff that I need tomorrow out at camp in the Yaris, so I decideed I will pick up the truck tomorrow after I get back from camp.

Went over to school for rehearsal this morning and who walks in but......  Well first I should say that all week long the new director has been trying to find a bass player so she wouldn't have to play keyboard bass and try to direct at the same time..........  So who walks in but Phil Flanigan!  Phil is a Geneva High Graduate and is one of the shining stars of Geneva musically.  Has played with many big names, or should I say that many people have had the luck to have Phil perform with them.  Nothing like getting a world famous Jazz Bassist to come in for the day and lay down the foundation for the choruses!  For those of you who don't know who he is (which is probably most of you unless you happen to follow traditional Jazz) you can read about Phil here: http://www.thejazzcorner.com/artist-profile.php?ID=103 The percussionist was also a Geneva graduate who is now teaching percussion at the college level and sometime subs in the music dept. here.  He was one of my student as a 6th. grader and is an Eastman Grad - also an awesome performer!  Needless to say the kids rose to the occasion and were just plain AWESOME!!!  Standing ovation several times and a constant standing ovation for an encore of the final combined piece complete with student and director improvisation (an arrangement of Bridge Over Troubled Water)  Edit, wrong song Bridge was the final number of the Varsity Singers, the combined number was "Seasons of Love" from Rent. Also known as "525,600 Minutes". I told the Superintendent of Schools that for 32 years as a Choral Director I had to struggle just to find a pianist who could actually find middle C and now both the Choral Directors get people like they have for the last 2 concerts.....  He just grinned from ear to ear.......!  Of course I got to sit in the back and do this:

Sorry to go on like this, but if you knew how many years I struggled to help bring the music department at this school forward to where they were performing to this level.....  It does my heart good to see the level of accomplishment  that is happening.  This was the best High School concert I have ever been to in Geneva and one of the best Vocal concerts I have heard in any High School.  If you think I am on an adrenaline high, you haven't even come close!!!

Have to get up very early tomorrow to finish loading everything and head out to camp.  So I guess I will just foot the bill for dessert for everyone.  And make sure Barry eats his pie instead of making a mess again, OK! WhistlingBig Smile

Evening, Chloe -  I'll have a slice of butterscotch pie with graham cracker crust, and a cup of coffee in a D&RGW mug, please. Thanks!

Robby P.

Well here's my engine house.  I thoughtI would try to build one from scratch.  I have no IDEA on how to build things.  So I added some braces for the walls, and roof.  Its pretty sturdy.  I still gotta add a few things, but I think it turned out ok.  Total cost $19.51.

I made it a single work shop.  I will only have a few engines for the bottom, but on the outside of the shop will be a extra siding.

Robby, great start - now, where's the corrugated aluminum walls (good for rusting and weathering...)? Wink

Nittany Lion - maybe you should sub-contract the cutting on your job out to Robby...?

Galaxy - about the train boxes, I probably have most of mine left (except for whatever got lost along a move or two). I haven't decided on anythin else to put my various freight cars into yet. Most of what boxes I've seen look huge (and where am I going to fit THAT box?!). So those I don't have the boxes for, I line up in rows/layers in a bigger cardboard box, with corrugated cardboard between the layers, and some of the cars in original BB and such at the ends to cushion the couplers some.

Tom Parsons - Sign - Welcome to the Diner - I bet BridgeTom (northern Calif.) may be able to tell you that answer (or maybe some other Diners can, too). Tell us a bit about yourself and your layout/plans/RR empire dreams - scale, time period you model in, major RR/fictional/short-line type or whatever. Just give your beverage and food order to one of our virtual servers (Zoe and Chloe - the twins and proprietors of the Diner, plus Janie, Flo and a couple other servers who work weekends and busy times). Watch out for hitting the TOP (top of page), as that'll land you with the (virtual) tab for the food and beverages on that page - and this crew is one hungry bunch! Oh yeah, and do watch out for the pie catapult. There's a remote hidden somewhere for that, but we're not completely sure who has that. (And to introduce myself, I model in HO scale, a fictional short line set in the 1950's in the Four Corners area of the Southwestern U.S., called the Colorado, Arizona and Western)

Jeff, hope that the discontinuing your Lyrica takes care of your foot problem (without any worsening from quitting it). I think you're getting some of the back of that front that moved out on us today. We may still have some more rain here through Saturday night, the weatherguessers are saying.

I'll get to my dessert quickly now (before someone tries to launch it)...Whistling

Prayers for those in need of healing and comfort (or drier weather...).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evenin all, how bout a barley pop please Cleo.

NittanyLion,,,, something I do to help with straight cuts, is clamping a cutting board [$5 Big Lots] to my work bench. Then using my steel scale rule as a guide and clamping it on top of the plastic. I've not got any projects like that going on right now, but I set it up to give ya an idea of how it looks.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g214/inch53/001-9.jpg

It's close to what I use for wood working long cuts with a skillsaw.

OK, as to whats going on here, mostly mowing between rains, kids and honey-do's. Farming n gardening works done for a few more days now, after almost a 3" rain in the last 24 hours, another inch or so tomorrow into Sat. Nobody I know has any crops out yet [corns bout 4-5 weeks behind, beans 3]. I got a little bit out, but most didn't come up, so it'll be plant if it ever dries enough. My 20-mater plants are yellowing from the wet n cold.

Been getting some MRR time, not making much progress.

I best get round, hope ya'll has a gooden

Good evening----

Nice and sunny this evening after getting poured on most of last night and most of the morning. It seemed that we entered into one of those evaporation/downpour cycling things that come about ---but with a 10 minute cycle instead of a day or two.

That the Indiana Transportation Museum's GP7.  And yes, she's a working train.  She's shown here pulling the pizza train from Fishers to Cicero.

Visit to the foot doc went well. I believe we've found the culprit for the mysterious swelling in my lower legs. Lyrica, a pain killer I've been taking for years has been found to cause swelling in a lot cases, even with people who have used it for a long time like myself. He advised me to stop taking it for a while and see what happens, so that's what I'll do. On the home front, I got my parents yard cut this morning as the weather guesser says it's gonna rain for two or three days. That's all I'd need is for the grass to get out of control. Instead of a minor nuisance it would become a major headache, and I don't need any more of those. Speaking of which, anybody know of any highly visible modifications that were made on the GE U30C that don't appear on many models? In case you haven't noticed I like to play around with the unusual.

Hi guys!

Just a Cup 'o' java this afternoon.

JimRCGMO

... Naw, on the property, I was just hoping you wouldn't have to fool with taking out that existing trailer yourselves. Now, if you could just continue to use the existing septic tank and not have the $$ outlay for connecting up to city water and sewer...Yeah!!

We hope to look at it {drive by} live in person this weekend. Then contact the realtor next weekend. It's been on the market a few months. The existing trailer still may be  livable, but not much value to us. It would be like trading in a newer bigger car for an older and smaller one. And, yeah, the city sewer hookup issue may be out of our hands, and the better option anyway, it's just the cost...

Went and took 3 old tires to the town pickup site for such. I think there are 2 more buried in the shed we need to get to {if we can find the inside of the shed}. 2 were old "donuts" we had and one we took for FIL. Is nice of the town to take tires and rims free {up to 8 and  Up to 19"}. Hope they get recycled well.

Raining here today so no planting.

Anybody want  some N scale Bachmann EZ track? I'm not sure what is in the box, but its about 5" x 12" x 12" with straights, curves and switches. If no one wants it it will probably wind up in the trash!

Also, how many you guys keep your old empty train boxes? I have a big box of HO boxes I need to get rid of. I think I will keep endflaps so I know what my fleet consists of, but throw them out?? I want to get some of those storage boxes with the foam in it. I know..only I can decide to throw them out. Just wondering how much you guys keep such "crap" around. The plastic Bachman boxes are probably recycleable.

If y'all can't tell, I'm getting in a "throw-out" mood. Need to decrease our load of "shtuff" around here by about half just to get a lighter load, have more room and decrease clutter, and by about 2/3 rds if we want to move! Everything must come OUT of the trailer for it to be moved, then moved back IN when it gets situated at it's new locale. I am putting the cart way ahead of the donkey here, but it is true. I don't know if we know what is even in the shed anymore. One thing is the flip table I built for an N scale layout my other half wanted to do, but there really is no place to flip it horizontal to do anything with. Design is ok, but a little unstable. I think I take the wheels off and scrap it.

Well, I have bored you to tears enough.

EDIT: A CUP 'O' JAVA ALL AROUND FOR MY FRIENDS!!!

Speaking of Berkshires… Last night my humble Bachmann Berkshire pulled 36 forty foot box cars. That’s 6.75 pounds worth of freight!

Good afternoon everyone, cloudy, showery and 56F today. I just received an email from MTH, their new 4-12-2 is now out, UP 9000 models. But unless you have around a 42" radius, you are not going to operate this baby very well on 22" radius, and forget 18" ( HO scale of course )

The Train trip of the Providence & Worcester RR last Saturday went very well. It was my 3 year old grandson's first ride on a train. He was used to Thomas the train and when he saw this big locomotive and the passenger cars, well, lets say that his eyes were quite wide, especially when he found out that he was about to board this big hunk of steel. I have some photos which I will post up on Webshots soon.

The transmission failed on the 1980 Wheel Horse, I removed the xmission to save on labor, and brought it down to my service guy, he is swamped, so I don't think I will see this back for a month. In the meantime I have made arrangements for the local sheep to take care of the lawn..LOL.

ROB, RAY, Cape JIM: Definitely take the kids on a train, it is so well worth the experience for not only the kids but for you also.

JEFF: Iron and steel does not cut very well !!!

LEE: Love those Berkshires !!!!!

Later guys , the wife has a piece of Strawberry-Rhubarb pie ( aka SR pie ) with french vanilla ice cream ready for me, eat your heart out Bob !! LOL,

Nittany Lion, if I were having that problem with cutting that plastic, I'd be tempted to find someone with either special tool or enough skill to do the cuts for me (just to save myself the aggravation). Hope you get things lined out on that okay. Yeah!!

I have some sort of mental block on doing something right when I need to do it.  If you gave me a piece of paper and said "slice this up into eleven inch long strips 1/16th of an inch wide" I'd produce several hundred strips for you.  But plastic sheeting that doesn't seem as disposable to me makes me feel more pressured by me and mistakes happen I guess.  I bet Micromark makes some sort of plastic cutting up machine that I could get.  Probably wouldn't be that bad an investment, if I plan on doing this a lot.

I think I'm trying to get this part perfect because its the foundation and if something isn't quite right, it will be very evident.  One wall is a 1/32nd of an inch too tall and nothing lines up right.  If the roofline isn't perfect, well, maybe its just a trick of the eye.  As I recall, the ancient Greeks were the first people to figure out you can play with phyiscal dimensions of something to get it to look right even if it isn't.  Columns have to be wider at the base than the top if you're working with stone.  But if you make the fluting slowly change size as it goes up the column, it produces columns that look completely cylindrical not tapered.

***Nittany, thanks for reminding me why I'm sticking with kits and ready-built's. Hey, at least you're learning what doesn't work and that is an important step to get out of the way early. Good luck and remember, "this is a FUN Hobby".Smile,Wink, & Grin

I'll have you know I've never had fun at anything and I intend to keep it that way!  I'd build lots and lots of kits if someone made buildings that looked right for me.  No one wants to make big industrial buildings, apparently.  Or a kind of house that's very common around Pittsburgh and Western PA but I don't see much of elsewhere.

Coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

***Ray, sometimes you cannot tell by looks (or even actions) alone. Some folks are a mystery and perhaps most of all are the "quiet ones".

***Morgan, anyplace we can see pis of those Saddletanked Duplex Cab Forwards?

Waiting on a call and then plan on hitting the train room for a bit. Have a great day all.
