Afternoon all from SunnyGetting HOTCal.

Just got back from a session at Jesuit that started out as a 9:30 rehearsal for Bacclaureate next Wednesday and turned into a MONSTER Jam-session with Ed Trafton, the Resident Artistic Genius at the school.  After the rehearsal at 10:30, I was called into the Dean's Office to figure out next year's schedule with the three Choir Directors and the Ellen, the Assistant Principal in charge of scheduling.  Leah told her that she only needed me 3 days a week with Beginning and Concert choir, then Phil chimed in that he needed me 4 days a week with his Chamber Singers, and Fr. Wanser chimed in and said that he needed me 4 days a week with Liturgy Workshop Choir.  Then Ed Trafton, who is Music Director for the school Masses grinned at me and said, "I've got to have him for Friday Masses on keyboard."

Ellen kind of grinned at me and said, "You were thinking of 3 days a week? "  I just looked around and said, "Not any more" in my best Peter Sellars/Inspector Clouseau accent.  Seems I'm back there full time.

After, Ed and I went back into the Choir Room and worked on the music for Baccalaureate.  He's doing piano, I'm doing keyboard (though I'm rehearsing on a second piano), and we get halfway through and he starts 'jamming.'  Okay, 'jamming' is generally what Jazz musicians do.  We're both CLASSICAL!  The two pianos are side by side, he gives me an Evil Grin.  I give him an Evil Grin back.  And we start WAILING!  Variations on everything we know.  He suddenly starts this really WILD theme, like it's a test to see if I know it.  I know it.  He blinks.  I grin.  He grins back.  Kids start coming in, we're just ROCKING and grinning.  We come to this HUGE conclusion, the kids go nuts.  Screaming and jumping up and down.  Ed and I just grin at each other.  "How did you know THAT?" Ed grins.  "I like Ginastera,"  I grin back.  What we did, was jam on an Argentinian folk-dance called the "Malambo", which is about as wild a dance as you can get--at least in classical music.

Anyway, Ed and I have decided that we're going to do a duo-piano concert next year for the school's annual Fund-raiser.  I couldn't be happier.  This guy, who is also the Drama Director at the high school, is absolutely INCREDIBLE!   We're still laughing about it.  We may do standard two-piano repertoire the first half then spend the second half just jamming and having the time of our lives.

Shortest retirement in history, LOL! Tongue

On the MR front, singnals are still working well,  Going to give THE PROSPECTOR a run or two tomorrow, if it looks good, I'll post on WPF.  Someone on the Forum said they'd like to see a photo of my Pullman-Standard SCENIC LIMITED, only with my big L-131 2-8-8-2 ahead of my 4-8-4 like Rio Grande ran up the 3% on Tennessee Pass.  Only problem is, they don't run that well together.  I tried.  (Okay, here's the argument for DCC, I know! Shock  Tell you what, you get up a collection to convert my brass fleet, I'll do it.Evil)

Anyhow, that's the news from this side of the country.  Oh yah, "Uff-Dah" is losing more hair, getting into his summer coat.  LIke, CLUMPS!  He sure looks WIERD.   At least, according to Spooky.

Best to all, prayers for those in need.

Dualing Pianos. I love it. Get someone fromt he Tech Dpartment to record and sell the DVds. We do that here, Every Friday (or last school day) before Prom, the Teachers dress up and sing along to different popular songs. (Football/Throwers coach in pink tutu dancing to "I Feel Pretty"  It;s recorded, and then you can buy the DVD for 12 bucks. And I really want to here a couple classicals break into wild fun.

You know, Lightning is fun to watch... when you aren't sitting in metal bleachers at a track meet... Lovely lights though. The Tornado siren... not so much. Best part, is the storm isn't here yet. I don;t know what they were thinking, or if they even were.

nik .n

Hey, CSX in selling locomotives! In CSX, of course.

Actually, Zac at Big Four Hobbies was contacted by CSX to hunt down 250 Athearn locos to be handed out as safety incentives to the CSX crews. And look in the bottom left corner of the other items, eww. I;m sorry, but a badly stylized sleeping kitty with a CSX hat, does NOT a Chessie make. Now, the C&OHS plushie, sitting in my lap, is very well done.

I'm gonna aks something that may turn political very quickly, but it;s railroading relevent. I take it you've all heard about the NTSB report abut the Buffalo crash, and all the fatigue issues. Is this, I'm wondering, anything like what would turn up the RR time-out rules? Are we gonna se planes landing in Bum-frick nowhere to change crews out?

This is what I had to oversee today.  It was one of the top priorities for all of us working on the roof project:

Well I had to also get lunch prepared.  Can't have a hungry crew now can we:

Oh we also did a little work.  Of course you don't see me working.... I'm behind the camera!

Tom Parsons: The redoubtable Mr. Hallaran came through this afternoon. Here's his email:-

Dear J.W. (I apologize for not asking your name this morning), I’ve looked through a most of our standard references and have come up with the following, albeit brief, information.  There are a couple of versions. 1) From Tom Patterson, A Colony for California: Riverside’s First Hundred Years.  Riverside Museum Press, 2nd Edition, 1996.            p. 163.  “The first carload of anything to be shipped by the new system from California was packed by the Griffin & Skelley packing house and put into Inter-            Ocean’s warehouse [an ice-making and cold storage business on land provided by the California Southern Railway,a subsidiary of Santa Fe RR] on February 8,             1887, for 24 hours of pre-cooling.  It moved east the following day.” 2) Rather than type in a long-ish passage, I instead have provided a link below to the source.  It is taken from a multi volume set called The Citrus Industry and published by the University of California.  Please, if the link fails to make across the border, let me know and I’ll tough it out and transcribe it. http://books.google.com/books?id=lrhOoeLJ1CkC&pg=PA296&lpg=PA296&dq=refrigerated+railroad+cars+Riverside&source=bl&ots=NKRRkt9WkC&sig=a6oRTfKbw4E-NSnAr6YIVSEYDig&hl=en&ei=o-INSvaNE4rqsgO275nzAg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3#PPA296,M1  I hope this offers the information you asked about.  If you need more information, please do not hesitate to call or write. Best wishes, Kevin

Kevin Hallaran Archivist Riverside Metropolitan Museum 3580 Mission Inn Avenue Riverside, CA 92501 USA  (951) 826-5701 khallaran@riversideca.gov

That link opened for me with no trouble.  Page 296 has some background, but the page you want is 297.  There is a photo (very dark) of the train, Southern Pacific (the caption says it was SP and Santa Fe, so I guess SP took the shipment the first part of the way.)  If you want to take this subject further, why not contact Kevin directly yourself.  If you do, say that you are the "aquaintance of John Wood from Nova Scotia "who was looking for information about.....

I may get back  in later, gang, but as  a visitor could come tomorrow to see the layout, there are some things to do!

EDIT: Hey...here's an idea for ya Jeff, why not replace the U-boat's "hammer head" radiators with SD-45 rads? Just a thought, your's may differ significantly.

Problem: I don't have an SD45 body to cut up.

Finally today there's a bit of good news. I found the decoder for the GE U30C.

I've seen something like that. It was an EMD SD40 with a CAT prime mover. Looks pretty strange with them big wings on it.

That was the SD-CAT, a re-engined SD-45 done as a pilot program when CNW was trying various ways, means, and schemes to rebuild/re-power the used SD-45's they picked up.

I found what I was thinking of: In '62, two Baldwin AS-16 locomotives went to EMD for re-powering. They came back with the Baldwin cab and front hood, but had "GP-18/GP-20 style long hoods." As per Diesels of the Chicago and North Western... The Baldwin engine was pulled, and replaced with an EMD 567.

Hey JEFF: If you're still wondering what to do to your U-boat...why not drop an EMD hood on it. Seems to me CNW re-powered an ALCO or Baldwin, and put an EMD hood over the new engine.

Good evening all,

Busy day today, first had the weekly meeting with THAT editor. Then, a "working lunch" on the Boss's dime while plotting next week's efforts. I was to cover a mock drunk driving accident at the high school...but the weather nixed THAT. Finished by going to the middle school for "Pioneer Day," with many pics shot. Even took a ride on a school bus for a trip out to a buffalo herd. I kinda felt like the guy from Ferris Bueller's Day Off...

For Southpark fans, one of the kids (5th or 6th grade, not sure which) was wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt (school color)...and looked like KENNY! As-in "Oh my God! They killed KENNY!" The buffalo were a novelty for about...five minutes, then the kiddees decided to play with the electric fence. They found it much, much more interesting... I'm a little worried about the future now.

Hey JEFF: If you're still wondering what to do to your U-boat...why not drop an EMD hood on it. Seems to me CNW re-powered an ALCO or Baldwin, and put an EMD hood over the new engine.

I could be mistaken though.

It has been known to happen...

Jeffrey W. I may have some Bachmann EZ track HO I may want to get rid of...you use the EZ track, don't you? Most of a simple oval from a train set.....Not sure yet what I will do with it.....

I can always keep some spare track around. If it's nickel silver (gray roadbed) I'll take it. If it's the steel stuff on black roadbed I don't want it.

Afternoon everyone!

I popped in for just a couple of minutes earlier when I was waiting for my son to pick me up and take me to the Dodge Dealers so I could get my truck back.  One reason I take the truck back them every time is the great treatment and service I get there.  The total bill for checking out the brakes and lubing the calipers was $0 and some advise to drive it at least once a week to keep them working.....  Hard to beat that!

Went out to Boy Scout Camp first thing this morning and helped with some odds and ends while the other volunteers were removing the old roof.  Only 5 of us out there working today.  Probably a few more tomorrow.  I cooked hamburgers for lunch for all of us with chips and veggies as well.  Made sure they had some fresh perked coffee for break and snacks to eat.  It was the rangers day to have truck problems.  The 20 year old camp truck (not the newer one) was being filled with the rubble from the old roof and was supposed to be moved every so often so that the roof could just be dropped into the bed of the truck.  On the second move, the brakes quit working........  Fun when he was backing up to the building.  Lucky it was uphill!  Then on the third move, the truck wouldn't start.  Good battery, but the shift lever wouldn't make contact to kick in the starter.  So the ranger and I walk down to his maintenance building get the tractor and pull the dumpster up to the building we were working on so he could use the bucket on the tractor and then dump it in the dumpster.  (He said he should have done that in the first place......  Which is what I had suggested at Properties Meeting a month ago.....)

After I got my truck home, I made another shopping list for tomorrow and went to the store.  Tonight I am going to just hang out and do very little.

Zoe, how about a cup of decafe and a piece of that Lemon Pie?  I'll go sit in the back and try not to snore.  Bring it to me there if you would.

Hi Guys!

How's things and stuff?

Sign - Welcome To the new Members of the exclusive Diner's club here where anyone can join for free!!! A desire for all things trains is all that's required, and the banter and dress is casual!

WELL! Tried to get online this morning and couldn't. Reset/restarted everything. Called Time Warner and they finally came about 4 pm and said the old modem had to go as they didn't use those anymore and it was bad. Whew.....computer/net withdrawal can be sheer hell !! I always want to get online/do more online etc. when I can't get on for any reason. Is that how it is for you too???  That is one reason I don't do everything like pay bills etc. online. Was gonna order something online today though, and couldn't, so I will wait. However did we manage before the Personal Computer and internet???

Galaxy-

Just train boxes? Amateur. I find myself keeping the boxes the car and structure kits come in. I just ran across the box the controller came in. Why do I keep these things?

Todd...I DO have such boxes as well....and old sprues....the celephane panels of boxes {maybe for windows?} ...and what-nots and who knows what all that I saved, in case I might need it someday. I come from a family of "savers" who never throw anything away! My mother always said we as kids often had more fun playing with the boxes than what came in them!!  I FINALLY threw out the box my new battery operated tools kit came in from last day-after-Thanks-Giving-Day-Sale just last garbage day! Actually the box got recycled and the foam got trashed.

I guess no one can use the Nscale Bachmann EZ track? It will join the trash pile perhaps then, I hate to throw it away if someone can use it and don't know if it will sell at a yard sale. I am NOT looking forward to the work that would involve but could use a few extra bucks and don't like to throw out something someone can use. I'm in a get-rid-of-it-now mood. Maybe I re-think and use it on the around-the-tree-layout for xmas......if it will fit in the plan for the new HO/Nscale combined under-the-tree-layout.

Jeffrey W. I may have some Bachmann EZ track HO I may want to get rid of...you use the EZ track, don't you? Most of a simple oval from a train set.....Not sure yet what I will do with it.....

Afternoon, Zoe - I'll have a BLT also, and a Dr. Pepper, please. Thanks!

Not sure what was going on this morning - I was getting a "No Server Found" message (or close to that) when I was trying to get into the Diner. I couldn't even get to the Trains.com main page. Confused Not even a Oops message... Catapult take down the server, maybe?Evil

Garry, love your velocipede (maybe that's it... no guarantees, though) - where'd you find that? I had never seen one of those.

Somewhat busy this morning (in spots here and there) - afternoon should be calm and hopefully the paperw**k will be done without having to stay late or anything. Yeah!!

No rain here yet today, but they're talking about 60 percent chance tonight. We'll see. Hot at the moment (80's F). That, I can do without...

I'll be in the corner booth, checking out the switcher doing its thing, and seeing who else comes in.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Barry said.... "That would kind of confuse some who have heard of some band called "Los Lobos", but oh well--- I know of one certain person who might like a band called "Berkshires" Me---I'd prefer something along the lines of "RS3"------"

If you come to Nashville, you can see a NC&STL 4-8-4 dispalyed in a city park The railroad called that class of engines "Dixies" instead of "Northerns". I heard that when the Dixies pulled into Nashville, they were whistling Dixie. WhistlingBig Smile Now, beat that one if you can. Tongue

Coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug with a BLT and please burn the bacon. Thanks!

Actually made a little time to work on the wife's canyon, adding more goof and trying out some experiments with what's on hand.

Today has been a barn cleaning and fence mending day here on the ol' farm. Need to work on laundry next.

Have a great day all and keep the posting pics. We enjoy them very much.

"Lost Locos"  Hoo Boy!!!!

That would kind of confuse some who have heard of some band called "Los Lobos", but oh well--- I know of one certain person who might like a band called "Berkshires"Whistling

Me---I'd prefer something along the lines of "RS3"------MischiefWhistling

"Lost Locos"  Hoo Boy!!!!

Chloe, pork roll sandwich and a decaf please? Thanks.

Weather's been everywhere lately, sunny, rain, fog, wind.... all in one day.  Asthma acted up last night, actually 1:30am..  It's different from when I was young.  Back then there was a lot of phlem, now it's just tightness.

Oh well, Sgt from police is here.  Time to get back to work.

Good Mornin, (yawn) Slept good last night and this morning too. I didn't get up til after 7.Shock Raining here now. Supposed to get storms again this eve and strong again tonight . Tired of storms already. I know it's only been 2 so far and this the third. The older I get the less I like storms.Sigh Gotta find out what the scratchy scrapey grindy noise in the truck front end is. It's about due for front brakes also. Last time it made the sound it was scale rust fell between the rotor and the stone shield. I'm hoping for the same again. It doesn't really sound like brakes, I just know it's about time. Brake fluids getting low. Now that I've "retired " from farming, no pension from that little stint, I hope to have the time again to take better care of my own stuff. LOL! yea right. Did I mention I need to clean up the train room. Sounds good, I think I'll head down there today.

A band huh? How about "Lost Locos" (some may get it. Some may be too young) Speaking of that, have you all seen this?  http://playingforchange.com/episodes/2/Stand_by_Me (Video so, Dial-ups beware.)

Have a Great Day!

It would seem the decoder install for the U30C will have to wait. I've been through all the accessible boxes in the closet but I was unable to locate the decoder I had intended to use. Looks like that project is pushed to the back burner until I can order a new decoder. What with car repairs and payment commitments to other modelers it may be two or three months.

Its a foggy morning.  Maybe the sun will come out later this morning.

Thanks for the kind words on the engine house.  I painted it up yesterday, and I think it will need some "weathering" done.   Might not be the best looking, but "it is what it is."

I might head to a LHS later today.  Get some supplies.

Not to much else planned today.

Here's a photo of a "rail" car.  Its been in town for a few weeks dropping rail.

ENJOY!!

Good Morning people.

We're getting some sun today followed by some more cloud and some more rain for the evening. Right now we're at 10C going to 21C, tomorrow we'll be at 17C with showers and T'storms ending in the afternoon and remaining windy for the day. By Sunday we'll have a high of 11C ---hey, but Thursday promises a high of 28C!!

Got today off so I now have a 4 day holiday weekend----YAY!!! Hopefully this translates into some MRR'ing time---aherm---cough cough

Good morning.

It's 69 and partly cloudy. The high should be in the high 80's with a chance of thunderstorms.

The visit to the foot doc yesterday was uneventful, in fact I almost fell asleep in his office. I've been wondering about what modifications I could make on my Atlas GE U30C. I'm not a U-boat fan so this is the only one I have. I'm looking for something that will set it apart from most others. Anybody can have the ordinary and mundane. I prefer things that tease you into taking a closer look before hitting you right between the eyes. While the model I have already has a couple of modifications they're things that wouldn't stand out except maybe to a rivet counter, such as U33C end rails and a horn from an SD24. I want to add something that makes a statement without bordering on the ridiculous. Yeah, I can hear the snide remarks already. I would prefer not to have to deal with those.
