Jeff, I don't know if its me or they are making these cars/engines.  I know on some boxcars/hoppers, just touch a part and its broke.

Looks like I'll be using the EMD cab after all. The GE cab didn't take kindly to being stripped and broke up like an egg shell.

Tall glass of cool lemon water, please & thanks.

Lots of great pics posted here lately.Thumbs Up

Haven't been in the train room lately, so nothing new to report on. Must have pushed too hard this past week, causing my illness to act up. Flat out exhausted. Nothing to do but rest, which frustrates me to no end. It is what it is.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Good evening, cloudy day today and only in the 50's. I caught a very bad head cold and this has made sleeping very hard. I went all Winter without as much as a runny nose, and here in MAY I get a bad head cold. Ohh well, a couple of days and I should be able to shake this off. I didn't kiss any pigs, so I know I don't have the Swine Flu..LOL

Have you guys seen the new BLI Hybrid steam loco? Mostly brass, some plastic I guess, $459 retail with decoder installed. I think it was a Hudson or maybe a Mohawk.

Cutting it short tonight, my etes are watering too much to type.

 Hey guys, just checking in.

Well, I have my ewnd of course exams next week, and also a Spanish test, a Romeo and Juliet test, a spanish dialogue, an international food festival, and field testing for state standardized tests. Also, last U15 soccer game is tuesday, and our team is going to Mi rancho (excellent mexican restuarant (I actually like cheese quesidillas, or however that's spelled) as an end of the year thing.

In other news, I've added some weathering to two of my hoppers, going to add another layer of powder later this week, hopefully.

Have a good week y'all! Smile

Afternoon, Flo - I'll have a RBF, a double cheeseburger (hey, ya only live once!), and some cheesey fries, please. Thanks!

Another sunny day in Cape Girardeau, but only into the upper 60's (F, that'd be... about 18 C), and supposed to drop about 20 degrees tonight (F, that is, not C! Shock). Don't put the blankets away just yet, Midwesterners...Smile,Wink, & Grin

Jeff - I wouldn't place any bets just yet on your niece 'getting it' soon. How old is she (despite how old she acts)? Maybe she's trying to foul things up so she doesn't get asked to help the next time... Your 'EMD-ized' U-boat looks... interesting, all right.Wow!!

Rob, good to hear that at least some of the critters are doing better (Mama Mallard) - next, how to get them all to be healthy at the same time for a while, eh? Wink

Jerry, it's good that your fiddle yard can be 'fiddled with' to move it close or further back as needed. Smile,Wink, & Grin

Inch, just another good example that there are a lot of things that really are prototypical! Thumbs Up Hope you get some MRR time in today.

Galaxy, that just hurts - no matter how you cut it - on those repairs. As you said, if you'd known that all those were gonna be needed, you might've been better off with replacing it with another (newer) vehicle. And I'm proud to admit that not only do I recognize that tune, I can probably play it ("...in four-part harmony..."). Actually, I quoted part of that to another single at church this morning between services...Laugh (and does anyone recall BR-549?) Hope something good crosses you and your wife's path this year (maybe even getting some more hours/funds in so you can take one actual vacation (hey, a weekend counts, right?).

Ray, I think you have whetted Galaxy's appetite/interest there. Now, don't leave the guy hanging out there - "Inquiring minds want to know," y'know? Wink

Well, well, well! Congratulations, Attaboy (and Mrs. Attaboy)! You clean up good, I'd say (that's you, the wife probably looks that good all the time, right?). Best wishes, including on converting the garage space for the layout - does the garage have heat and air conditioning?

Robby - nice job on the covered hopper - tastefully done, but not over the top! Thumbs Up

I'm waiting on a couple of (used) books I'd ordered from Amazon to come in tomorrow. One of them is  A Treasury of Model Railroad Photos - with MRR'ing photos from Dave Frary, John Olson, Paul Scoles and Malcolm Furlow. Should be fun to read/look through when it gets in. Yeah!! I also debated about getting Malcolm Furlow's book on the San Juan Central (might get it later...).

I did get something for my 'portable workbench' earlier this afternoon - I had one of those 'breakfast in bed' trays, with the handle cut-outs on the side and a metal bottom (wood sides), and thought that I could cut small to medium-sized stuff in it, and it allows me to just pick the whole thing up to clear things off the dining room table when I need to stop. I'll get a photo this evening, and post it tomorrow. In looking through stuff for what would go into the PWBench, I found that I have about 45 pairs of couplers, so I should be able to finish changing out my freight cars to Kadees without spending any for a goodly while.

I've also been setting up a MRR'ing book database - program for Macs called Bookpedia (and they also have DVD and CD ones), in which you can enter the book title or ISBN # (if you're connected to the Internet), and the program will search multiple book sites (Amazon - US and UK, 2-3 library sites and some others) for the information (pages, publisher, author, and cover art, etc.) It's found probably 75 percent of the ones I've entered. For some of my older Kalmbach books, it couldn't find either the book or the cover art. If I had a webcam, I could use it to import a photo of the cover. Instead, I'm scanning the cover art in on the ones that weren't found, and then import the images to the matching books.

I also have been setting up a MRR inventory tracking database in AppleWorks. Still refining what fields and information I need. Want to use it for locos, cars, supplies, and pretty much everything in/on the layout. Then I could print out a list of everything once I get around to insurance (and the $$) for covering the MRR stuff. I've seen some databases in Windows (had some screen dumps/prints I need to find), but none of them just quite 'fit'.

Hey, anybody have suggestions for something that would resemble (HO scale) screen windows? I have one of the old Revell farmhouse kits, but want to modify it with screened in porches. I would like to be able to (reasonably) see some details inside the screen (like if I can find/make some rocking chairs for the porch, maybe make a hand-cranked ice cream freezer?). Anyone know of some type of 'screening' I could use (will use scale strip styrene to glue it to and then fasten framing around the posts and such).? Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions/info.

Time to kick back and enjoy my dinner now. Dinner Prayers for healing and comfort, for cars that keep running, good night's rests, and some fun time (MRR or other) this weekend and in the week ahead.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good afternoon---is it still afternoon?---I wonder----Smile

Got some mowing done around all our cottage garden schtuff---we were lucky that all that rain did not come all at once b/c everything would have floated downhill here. I also had to go and get some more mulch put out as that was what floated away from yesterdays bout of "rain keep fallin' on my head". I also got some time to start putting together another couple of those ATLAS Kate's Colonial houses. I've started these two by giving them a 30/70% wash to dull down the styreney look they have---there were a couple of other things I want to do with them---one is going to get a back deck while the other is getting a different porch------Approve

HEE HAW---what a dang weird show that was---but funny!! Still--it does kind of age us. Things i remember watching were things like Daktari!, Adam12, My Three Sons----eeeshWhistling

Rochester & Genesee Valley RR Museum

One of the best kept secrets in western/central New York!  The R&GV connects with the New York Museum of Transportation by rail (about 2 miles).   We operate every Sunday but have some great "special" days during the Summer.  The 2 museums are separate organizations but operate together for trolley, rail car, and train rides.  One price to see it all.

TV?  People still watch TV?Whistling  I haven't even turned it on in several years.  Only reason I have one at all is for relatives that have the addiction......  I stopped watching when the majority of airtime became used for ads.  Oh!  That must be the "Message" somebody was talking about.  "BUY ME! BUY ME! YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT OUR PRODUCT!"  Used to love Emeril Live.  Used to love to watch real food being prepared by a master.  Then the show became 5 minutes of Emeril followed by 11 minutes of ads for fast food, followed by 5 minutes of show, followed by.......  Never understood that one. Jeff, I like the way you're thinking with that engine.  Can't wait for the final results!

You and 50 others. I'm under some pressure on this one. I'm in the process of installing the EMD radiators and fans now. I decided to change the cab back to the GE one. The EMD cab was a bit much. I still have the exhaust stack to go.

Hello

It was really good of Attaboy to stop by and share photos of the wedding. What a wonderful occasion! Attaboy, what is the name of the "blushing bride"?

Perhaps, more of you can share photos of their spouses and significant others. I know some of you already have done that, but others should feel encouraged to do so.

Speaking of such, here's my better half, Shelley. I know some of you call your wife the "CFO". In my case, Shelley actually is a retired CFO. Here we are when we were in London, and as you can see, she has ways of keeping matters under control!

Oh, never mind. I'll go back to working on the layout.

Feel free to post family pix!

Good afternoon.   Stopping in right quick.

Its Sunday, so that means the wife is watching "Soaps".  Basement time.

Well her (wife) operation is this Friday, and the mother-in-law is coming in Thursday.  Thats fine.  BUT.....Now the father-in-law is going to go to my wifes operation Friday as well.  Now these two are separated.  Well as long as the don't start fighting.   I did tell my wife, "that could be my entertainment".   SO who knows what will happen.

I guess I better go.  I will try to get back in later.

Here's a patched, painted, renumbered hopper for ya!!!

Chris, those shows are on sat. tv here which of course I don't have.  Cable offers better service in this area but their programming could be a bit better.  I'll have to check the nether regions of the channels as they now go pretty high.

Jeff, I like the way you're thinking with that engine.  Can't wait for the final results!

BTW, Galaxy, you might consider a short day trip over to the Rochester and Genesee Valley RR Museum this summer as well as Steamtown.  We are located in Rush, NY and have 2 weekends a year where we are running antique diesels and cabooses up and down the line.  You get entry to 2 different museums and can ride the trolleys and the trains all day for $7.

More Details please!

Good afternoon all,

Sunny, kinda cool for mid-May...but PERFECT (unfortunately) for mowing the yard. Loving Wife has re-certified in advanced shoveling and wheelbarrow operations as she continues to mitigate some unsightly areas in the yard.

JERRY: I'd have whoever sold you the chair come out and check it...a battery that new shouldn't leave you stranded. Also...don't hesitate to call the fire dept. for help getting out of the chair and to your portable oxygen if you don't have neighbors, family, etc. close by.

JEFF: The Dr. Frankenstein of locomotives... Hey, with the right A-Dapta-Kit ( plus a little JB Weld and duct tape)...anything can be fitted to anything right??? There's all the "plausibility" you need... Thumbs Up

So....will this be a SDU30CJ? USD30-CJ? Some variation?

ewl01
Now it seems eveyrthing has to have a messeage instead of being just plain fun.

That's precisely why I watch very, very little on TV anymore. My "regular programing" now pretty much consists of "Emergency!", "Adam-12," "Dragnet," and "24." The oldie shows are on the Retro TV Network... the ONLY good thing I've seen in the switch to digital TV.

Time for a slice of apple pie...then I'll either do some stuff for w**k, or finish mowing the yard (maybe I'll go disrupt the rooster neighbor's picnic...), or a nap, or "dream it, plan it" (can't build it...yet). I dunno. THAT kinda day.

Mornin' everyone!

A very, very cool day here today.  That is cool temperature, no cool as in "oh yeh, right on"!  May get all the way up to 53°F this afternoon and we have a freeze warning for tonight.  May be a good thing I haven't planted the garden yet........  The sun is going to shine for most of the day though so I probably will mow half the lawn.  It needs it.

pcarrell

Galaxy, look at it this way.......doing all this work right now should pay off in a few years as the value of the car is probably bottoming out at around 11 years and will soon start to go up again.  You're simply being a shrewed investor who's buying low and selling high!

Galaxy, what Philip is referring to is that with all the new parts and the price of them going up due to fact that they don't make any of them any more means that the "junk" value will increase.  The junk dealers will find the car more valuable as they can sell the parts for a better margin.......Smile,Wink, & Grin  Been there, done that.  My last year of college (1968) and my first year teaching I was driving an "antique" 1956 VW Bug.  I bought it for $250 and drove it for almost 3 more years.  Original engine, transmission, and just about everything else.  It hadn't had a lot of use, only 230,000 miles on it.  Died on the first day of spring in 1969.  Transmission just wore out.  I turned around and sold it for $75 to a guy who rebuilt it into a Dune Buggy (remember those?) and had it back on the road for several more years.  That was back when I taught in Waverly, NY.  Galaxy, you must live somewhere near there I bet.

I will have a busy Sunday today as I have a lot of items to get finished and ready to print for some things happening next week.  So I better take my shower and get started with the day.

Hope you all have a blessed and fine day!

Hi all, it's been four weeks since the wedding and things are finally starting to settle into a comfortable routine again.  The discs with our wedding pics have made the rounds of our families and are still intact.  Since Jim asked for pics here is a couple.  First the blushing bride:

and the happy couple:

I haven't been working on any train stuff lately Sad but I'm hoping to get started converting the garage out back to a train room soon.

Guess that's about it for now.  See you.

Fired up my credit card again! Durn it! Well it took 3 hours to call me and the bill was $615.10 for front brakes only. Needed new calipers to replace the original equipment calipers. One was freezing and not releasing. Had NO CHOICE. That is on TOP of the $565.00 I spent just the other day for new tires and front end alignment, on TOP of the $154 I spent last week to replace the blower motor resitor pack. On TOP of the $987 {already paid for} I spent last month on the O2 sensors and exhaust system. Part of the problem is that I'm replacing 11 year old original equipment, which at 120,000 miles and 11 y/o is wearing out. Knock wood everybody that I am DONE for at least a  year.... If I had the money all together at once, I'd buy a newer used vehicle....but then I could get into a similar boat SO...

Been through that 3 years ago with the Audi. Man, that was expensive---still paying off on the expense!! Although I'm just about done-----Sigh

I heard a version of that---it had a line about---"Ah'sa be a Po' Bo'. Ah'sa Bo' that's Po'"---so poor they can't afford the extra letters-----Whistling----' course those lines you placed out came from some ol' blues record-----Whistling

Had to take van in for brakes. {groan}. HAven't heard yet what it is and what it will cost yet. My theory {and seems reality} is the longer it takes someone to call me about repairs the higher the cost. {groan again}.

That will mean $0 for any type of get away this summer. A few Steamtown trips maybe...the cheap go and watch them play with the 1:1 Steam trains. With my other half's hours cut and me spending money to make sure we have at least one good vehicle to get around and get to my many Dr.s appts. there we will be po' folk for a while {that's PO' cuz we can't afford the other "o" and the "r"} . Property ideas may have to be put off too.....

If you remember that one, maybe you're older than you care to admit?

LOL

Have a great day guys.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.
