Afternoon everyone!

Just grabbing a light lunch before heading oiut to the Dr. appointment.  Just my usual 6 month checkup to see how bad a boy I have been and what old age has next for me........  Spent all morning at School rehearsing sound with the High School Choruses.  Should be a fairly easy concert to get sound right for.

Opened the door this morning and found a package of materials about our scholarship winners with a note thanking me for finishing up the news release that should have been in the paper last week......  I will graciously finish it and get it to the paper as the secretary of the MLK Committee is a teacher in the next town over and has been dealing with a Suicide at the Building she teaches in.  A kid with some severe mental problems brought 30 shotgun shells and two Malitov Cocktails to school and put them in his locker somehow.  later in the day he went to his car and smuggled in a sawed off shotgun, went into the bathroom and committed suicide!  He had planned on creating another Columbine type event.  It could have been a lot worse but............

Anyway, I'll see you later, gotta go see what the Doc has in store for me.

Todd, while I understand and appreciate your thoughts on the subject, I'd counter that creationists have at least exactly as much "proof" as anyone else.  I mean, we're all looking at the same evidence, right?  The only difference is in the interpretation.  The question is, what makes the most sense.  If Darwinian Evolution is correct, we should be virtually tripping over fossils of life forms in transition, right?  So how come NOBODY has found even JUST ONE?  And how do you explain "simple" life mechanisms like cells that are so complex that they simply can't exist (nor could they ever have existed that we can tell) without some amazingly intricate systems set in place right from the start?  Evolution doesn't support those evidences well.  There's way more then that of course, but I won't go into it here.  Suffice it to say, creationists have the exact same evidences as anyone else as to our origins.  We just have a guide book (the Bible) that hasn't been shown to be wrong yet.

But I digress............

Good morning, Chloe? a to-go bucket of coffee please, and thank-you.

Heading out shortly to go interview a man who spent several years in China...and is apparently starting up an apple orchard. Our former "stringer" interviewed him some time ago...but never turned in anything. THAT editor finally cut the string on the stringer...and he's flippin' burgers somewhere now. Sooooooo, now I'm doing a little "damage control," while trying to find out what the stringer did, or didn't do on this guy. THAT editor didn't really specify if she wants the "angle" to be on the time in China...or a new business feature on his apple orchard.

All I know for sure, is I'm meeting the guy at an apple orchard on...Dingleberry Road.

Yep... DINGLEBERRY Road.

My poor fuzzy buddy Rerun had his dingleberries pruned some years back...Whistling

JimRCGMO
I like that tank and the 'walls' around it - what'd you use for your walls?

JIM: THANKS! The walls are three layers of .040 styrene welded together with Testors liquid plastic cement. I painted them with Polly S concrete, then hit them with several layers of home-brew/mad scientest "weathering munge concoctions." I'm sure there's probably a dozen things "wrong" with the tank, walls, etc. BUT, with only one fuzzy front view to work off of...I'm happy with it. Until proven otherwise...

Have a good, SAFE day. Warm and sunny here again, 'sposed to be rain/storms all day tomorrow. Yippee.

Hi boys!

Kona coffee with Splenda (no sugar) please...in a B & O Capital mug please....

Well, the addition of extra extra extra vitamin b-6 does seem to help the tingling in my hands somewhat. But, my hands still get tired/twinge the nerve when typing for more than 5 mins or when cooking/eating dinner, or other things.I will wait for a week then call my reg Dr. and ask how the results of the carpal tunnel tests look once he has them in hand. I can fully uinderstand reluctance to go immediately for surgery unless results show it be of great benefit.

Gonna do some tire shopping today and tomorrow. With a slipped belt in one tire and a 5 year old spare, we are not trusting the tires. They say rubber starts to rot after 5 years. One tire on the van is only a year old...replaced a tire with a nail in the sidewall last year partially under road hazzard warrantee. That was at the Firestone dealer. They may be a bit more expensive, but it saved me some money with that warrantee. Maybe. If other dealers are about same price for 4 new tires, I will go with Firestone again. I will call around for a few prices, and visit live in person some others, or maybe all after I get price on phone.  Warm up the cash register and the credit card , here I come....

In answer to the fire siren question, around here they wail the air raid style sirens when there is a call, except 11pm-6 am. And always sound it at Noon just cause it's noon. It is supposed to alert all the volunteers that there is a call and alerts the community a call is in place to look out for fire/abulance/emergency vehicles around the area....

Cleaned up the front porch some and threw some stuff out. "Found" the grill to par grill the T-bones. A simple warm up cooks them to perfection. More stuff will need to go soon. I may just start throwing more stuff out for the trash men to take jsut to get rid of stuff. Wanna have a garage sale but dont know if I want the work. We just have too much stuff/junk/clutter/ SHtuff.

There is a piece of property we would like to look at with the idea of having the old trailer removed and ours moved to the land. Near 3/4 of an acre with a view over looking a valley. Not so crazy about where it's at, a bit farther out than we would like to be, but the price can't be beat. My father will help with a  down payment, but with me on disability and my other half low income with hours cut drastically due to the economy and maybe soon out of job altogether, it may be very hard at this time to get any hope of financing. Plus the amount to finance may be lower than really worth writing a mortgage for. Dunno. It would seem we would have to pay to connect to the city sewer unpon title and fill in/remove the old septic system, which is an added expense.  The value is in the land, the well already there and electric run to the property, not the old trailer. It will have to be torn down as older than 1982 can not be moved on wheels as the wheelsets were not welded to the frame. I think if we put in full price offer, we would require owners to remove old trailer for us before closing, that would save us that expense. It has been on market for a few moths with no offers put in. The old trailer my be ok, there are some of it's models here in our park, but it would have no value to us trading an older model for our 1983 model. WE would really really like to get a brand-y new one but that is not in the cards now for sure. At least we are not in an area like Robby P. is in.

WEll, my hands are tired of typing {lucky for you guys reading this} so I go now.

Have  great day everybody!

OK, no problems with that. Let's see what happens with a pasted post.

Jim, Receiving a 40% coupon for HL is about the only time I go to the place. I'm lucky enough to have 2 discount hobby shops in the area. One is a multiple hobbies, (MR, Radio controlled cars and planes, and model cars etc.), the other is a Model Railroad shop, called Castle Trains. That's the one I refer to as my FLHS. It has about anything you need. It's a business in a guys basement. Packed it is. Very friendly people, (actually both are very friendly), and they do of course order. How long to receive I have no idea as I haven't had to order from them, yet. They seem to get orders in all the time, but how long ago they ordered them? They are both discount so if you take 20% off list that's about what you'll pay. Before tax of course. So you see HL a chain at list with a limited amount verses a small business plus discount plus service plus advice and help. Not knocking HL. Some many are not as fortunate as me to have these businesses. I try to buy all I can from them. But money rules and the price wins. I look a lot on the Bay, many things go for what I can get them for here, some are not available (like my beloved T&P locos)and sometimes, sometimes I get a good deal. It's got to be substantially less including shipping to get me to buy anywhere other than local. I hear the others that have to travel, buy over the net etc. and I do what I can to keep these places going. Of course they couldn't keep a light burning for what I spend but still, ever bit helps. Besides, there's something about walking in a little shop and the guy looks up with a smile and says "Well, Hey! How you doin'? What's been happening?" Big Smile

Hm. That worked out to be longer than I intended. Oh well, that's the way the good Lord wanted me. Long winded. Why, I don't know. Guess He just wanted me that way. Maaaybe it was to help my wife get to sleep at night!

DerJohn- I don't want to get in trouble with the mods, so I'll make it quick. "Blindfaith" as I use it means if I can't explain, I would rather assume it's His work or plan. Not that I am not interested in the hows and why's. But in conversation with the evolutionists and the others who I'll really only have to deal with while I'm alive on earth, they ask me how I "know" all this stuff with no "proof". The Bible is of course just a book. Written by man. I respond, "Blind Faith. Also, when I was a kid in grade school, moons ago, we where taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America and was the first person to step foot on "American" soil. That was from "your books". Shall I go on, I think I will. Your education when referring to what country you are from, has you responding America. Last I checked America is a land mass consisting of two continents, North America and South America. The United States is a country.I guess that really makes us United Statesians" Then it usually erupts into a battle of wits of which I'm not equipt to fight. Laugh

Funny how equality means they can express their opinions but I can't express mine because it offends them.Confused

EDIT: That's it. Something about the transfer from Word. I mean, Works.

Jeff. how long did you have to rub with the alcohol to get the original paint job off? I've had mixed results when I've tried to strip paint jobs at times.

I let it soak in 90% alcohol for 3 to 4 hours before I started scrubbing it down. Much of the paint came off quickly while some spots required more work. Some didn't want to come off at all. Those are in a couple of seams and a few spot in the grilles. That doesn't matter much as it's all now covered by the gray primer.

Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have one of those chocolate donuts and a cup of coffee in a Santa Fe mug, please. Thanks!

I frankly wonder why it would be taking them that long!--The one I go to when in Woodstock ON only takes a couple of weeks, or even days, to get the orders in

Barry (and Jeff), I mentioned the regional warehouse (may not have the item in stock), and there's another reason I heard from our MRR club member and LHS owner: he said Walthers has increased their minimum order (about 50 percent higher this year) that the LHSes have to place for an order to be filled. That - especially in smaller areas (including Cape G.) - can mean that the LHS has to sit on some orders until they hit the minimum level, and that sure could delay orders. But that's my partially educated guess, is all...

Another cool morning (50's F), and supposed to be sunny and into the low 70's (F) today, but later tonight we may catch some of the rain that's going to be passing through to the south. Then tomorrow (I think it was, wasn't watching closely this a.m.), there's a front that is supposed to extend from SE Kansas up into middle/western Illinois that might generate some heavy weather. I did hear from a co-worker who lives in Illinois across the Mississippi, that they said Carbondale, IL was reported as having "an inland hurricane" Shock with 100 mph winds in that storm on Friday. Sheesh! They'll get power about by this Thursday, the report said.

Sawyer- good job on the 'U-boat' there - that looks like a working loco! Robby would be proud of that, I'm sure. Smile,Wink, & Grin

Chris, I like that tank and the 'walls' around it - what'd you use for your walls? Thumbs Up

Jeff. how long did you have to rub with the alcohol to get the original paint job off? I've had mixed results when I've tried to strip paint jobs at times.

Oh, I ordered some Microscale decals for my work train cars last night at MRR club meeting. Also paid Kevin (our layout architect, electronics guru and loco fixer) for some work on my 2-truck Shay that he's waiting on a gear puller from NWSL to get the w**k done. Also asked him - long as he'd be inside there - to see about installing a DCC encoder. He said with the decoder, it'd just add $30 or so to the total cost. Not bad, so far as I know prices...

Well, I'll join Todd in the window booth and see what's happening outside today.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Jeff- Did you strip the loco first or did you just prime over the original paint. If you did did you loose any detail. It doesn't look like you lost any from the pictures. Looks good.

Most of the original paint was stripped using alcohol, a felt brush and plenty of elbow grease.

Mornin' Scramble eggs with salsa toast and coffee please. Thank you. Not much on the plate today, might just clean in the trainroom before venturing out. I think I've said that before. Oh well. Suppose to be a nice day today. Sunny and about 74F. Me thinks me's figured out the posting issues I have. If I post in the forum then it seems to be OK, but if I post in word then paste to the forum I get that letter paragraph thing going on. We'll see here.

Good morning.

It's 67 and cloudy. The high will be in the upper 80's and there's a chance of thunderstorms later.

Work on the SD24 continues as the SD27J project. I'm rebuilding it into something faintly resembling an SD26 that required a re-designation. It's missing the telltale hump of the SD26 and has six air tanks instead of four. Since this is something UP never owned the UP paint job is toast and the loco is now primer gray with the exception of a patch of harbor mist gray on the roof behind the cab. There wasn't much else done yesterday as the project consumed most of my free time. The metal strip across the front of the mower deck of my parents new mower turned out to be a mulching attachment and is not required for regular mowing. As a result the strip has been removed and will be sent to Metal Mountain with the rest of the scrap metal on the property.

Good morning.
Robby, I imagine stories like that were told back in the 1800’s when the silver ran out. The auto industry shutting down has affected everyone in the Great Lakes basin.  The steel mill here in Cleveland is idle and the taconite loads on Lake Superior has all but stopped.  The 10 daily trains of autos and coal are hardly seen on the local tracks.  The only two persistent trains are the salt train and Amtrak.
Garry, what’s the link to your forum?

Sawyer, Nice job on the U-boat!

I set the laptop up in the train room and plan on shooting some movies with the quick cam this weekend.

 Milk, Chloe.

I went to AC Moore and gots meself's a X-Acto knife, and some balsa wood. I'm trying to make a General Store or something along the lines of that. I'll see what mistakes I make to see what it is closest to.

Jeff, the local fire department has a antient squirrel-cage open frame siren that is music to anyone's ears, it's wail is a lonesome, erie sound, kinda like a far-off steam whisle on a summer night, full of the sound of tree frogs and crickets. I'm about about two miles from it, and on a clear night, it is AWESOME! And If you are lucky to see it wail at night it is shrouded in a halo of sparks.

I got philosophical last night. I was looking for solder so I could do some feeders. As I was looking around my sister asked what I was looking for, and as I was looking for any solder, I said, "We are all looking for something in life, it's just when we find it we know what we are looking for. Hence, I am looking for solder, not any in particular, just solder, so when I find it I'll know what I'm looking for." Interesting, Huh?My 2 cents

Robby P.

Jeff, how many trucks does your fire company have?  The one a few houses up from me has two trucks, and a brush truck "Hilltop 2".  "Hilltop 1" two trucks, and a ladder truck.   Sound like we live in a big city, but on the news the other day......The city I live in has the most non-lived (empty) homes in Pa.  I believe it was 300 houses.

Also, does the fire alarm sound?  Down south they didn't but here they go off all the time.  Sounds like air-raid.

We have two class A pumpers, a tanker (tender) and a brush truck as well as a service truck for carrying equipment. Down here we're called out by page radio. Every firefighter has a radio with a pager channel tuned to recieve calls for whatever area they're in. That way we don't scare the devil out of the population with those big civil defense sirens.

This town was the place to be years ago people tell me.  It was a steel town, and a coke (coal) plant town.  The steel has gone, and the coke plant is laying off in July.  I believe 115 people.

 Here's a story on it.

MONESSEN (KDKA) ― A local town is being singled out for the number of abandoned houses lining its streets.

Monessen, in Westmoreland County, is topping the list of Pennsylvania's emptiest towns.

According to the Associated Press, there are currently more than 300 vacant homes in the town of Monessen.

Local officials attribute that to steel mills shutting down along with the current recession.

The mayor says efforts are being made to tear down the abandoned homes, but the town only gets around $75,000 a year for the work.

He's hoping to get more money from the stimulus package for future work.

Local business owners like John Sassak, who owns Nuzzaki's Pizza Shop, says the abandoned homes are hurting his business.

Duquesne and Braddock in Allegheny County are also on the list of Pennsylvania's emptiest towns.

We have an air raid siren that is still hooked up to power down the road a piece from us. It went off accidently after some dang squirrel got used as a short circuit by a capacitor up there. It's loud!!Whistling

Good evening...

I went to Hopkinsville today for various reasons.

Some of you may be interested in my thread in Electronics and DCC. I'm looking for comments from people who have DCC systems. If you care to chime in there, please do.

Sawyer, looks good. Reminds me I have to weather my U-boats, all 5 of them. I'll actually start doing pastels on engines starting with my U33Cs since they are going through some body work and stuff like that.

Thanks Vincent. Yeah, pastels and bragdon weathering powders are awesome.

lol, thanks barry.

Chris, thanks man.

He found a basket of charred clothes and ruled that out as the ignition point. He's not ruling out foul play at this time. Things just aren't adding up for me either.

A bit odd this. I'd be looking at the wiring in, and around, the dryer and all that---they'd probs be putting this one in the unknown category----with a LOT of suspicion, no doubt.Confused

My thought on it is that the wiring on the dryers circuit could have been damaged and it could have burned through.

Hey all, another long day at work. Turns out the place I work at is hiring. Maybe it's a sign that I should find another job so I can get out of working at a fast-food joint. There was a opening I was as a car salesmen, but it's at a Chrystler dealer. I'm a Ford guy....

Todd, that's nice but there isn't a hobby lobby near here (well, about an hour and a half away). However, I found out my father has a bunch of that stuff at his work, so maybe I could use that. Only one issue, it's pink!!!

Jeff, that's weird that a second fire started up.

Sawyer, looks good. Reminds me I have to weather my U-boats, all 5 of them. I'll actually start doing pastels on engines starting with my U33Cs since they are going through some body work and stuff like that.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

JEFF: Any word on a cause for the 2nd fire?? Sounds more than a little suspicious.

According to the Fire Marshall's findings it could have been tyhe dryer which seems doubtful. He found a basket of charred clothes and ruled that out as the ignition point. He's not ruling out foul play at this time. Things just aren't adding up for me either.

ChrisEight Ball: The surroundings/foundation for that tank are terrific! I really like the weeds in there.

EDIT: Another DOH! moment.

...No exclusive on those these days. I wrote this
You can see where that was, and where the longer one is. Makes a longer lead to the industry, and solves a curve on the grade off the main situation that was always a pain.
last night, but didn't put in the linksBanged Head  so, You can see and where the new one is. ...and CapeJim
I imagine it's 'fun' to have to re-fit the track when you change the turnout.
...oh yes, but the worst part wasn't the track but the alignment system for the module shelf the track runs on (those screw thread thingies in the photos) for some (OK, you know it's Murphy again) reason, the whole thing decide to play up. It has worked perfectly well for years.Pirate

More Murphy's Law today.  The chair we moved up from the sun-porch for Kris' computer station is one of those "thrown together" items. Looks great, but the back is wobbly.  Solution is to take it apart and glue, then re-afix. Take apart = find an Allen wrench that will fit in the space for same. Of course the original is long gone. My set, the short leg of the one that looks about right is too long. Cut off some of that leg so it will fit. It does, but isn't the right thickness. The next one down perhaps? NOT THERE!!!!; the only one on the ring missing.  I'll see tomorrow if the LHS = Local Hardware Store has one. Don't want to buy a whole new ringful.

Jeff:

It take 3 to 6 months to get an order filled through the LHS here.
...ours places an order only once a month with Walthers, so one has an immediate wait built in, depending on the time of month. After that, it's quite swift. Quicker after that initial wait, than waiting for the USPS and Canada Post to take their sweet collective time to discover where the border is, and juggle with customs, etc. Besides, for things he regularly deals with I'd like to support the local. Other stuff, I have to negotiate shipping and handling, and have the post delay anyway. Trying not to envy the quick service you guys get. An ordinary letter takes a minimum of 2 days to a local address because they take it from Sheet Harbour Post Office into Halifax, sort it and bring it back for delivery. All, of course at our expense. So a bunch of local mail gets hand delivered!
It's in one of the boxes in the closet
...it will, of course, be the last one you look in!Blindfold

Speaking of "local", Canadian National runs a caboose on their regular local in Truro. I don't have a photo, but will try for one, RobbyP will appreciate why.

Todd:

Though if I don't understand then the Blind Faith kicks in.

Jerry: Hope that redness is swiftly dealt with.Angel

I'm off to see if I can get some paint on that new track, and then ballast the whole section. Who knows, some green over the sawdust "ground" might even happen - it's been a while since I did any of that. I might also put a TCS CN decoder in an Altlas 1995 GP 7 . I have to saw off the back of the headlight castings for a correct fit. Ask me not how I know this.Clown

Jeff - 3 to 6 months? Sheesh! I don't blame you a bit for ordering direct, if your LHSes (or maybe their regional warehouses are the problem) take that long. I try to support local places, but if it were that far out on getting stuff, I'd most likely do the same

I frankly wonder why it would be taking them that long!--The one I go to when in Woodstock ON only takes a couple of weeks, or even days, to get the orders in ---but it would take ME about 2 months to get to them with my silly schedule.Whistling.He'd be waiting for ME to pick them up! LOL!!Laugh

Walther's holds the LHS's orders until they reach a certain amount then ship it all as a bulk shipment,
