Too many posts & not enough time to keep up with y'all. I'll just have a large lemon ice water, please & thanks. Oh, and a slice of pecan pie, if there is any left.

Put off hay day until tomorrow. Working on frames to hold polarizing filters. Need them to photograph artwork to create prints from. The art paper arrived today, so it's time to get going on producing the new prints.

Wife is writing away tonight (typing), preparing for a couple literary competitions.

At second glance, the "business" we are looking at starting is now looking too costly to...well...start. Haven't given up on the idea, but the wife will more likely than not have to return to work, at least for a time. (wish I could figure out how to keep that from happening)

Not much else to report on.

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Looks like I have Top Honers. If so, then Fresh COFFEE is being brewed and will continue until the next page arrives. Drink up!

I'd still be looking over my shoulder if I were you.....you bad boy you!  I just put it away so as not to confuse the coppers on who the REAL bad guy   was!  For shame........... Smile,Wink, & Grin

Who!?  Me!?ShockedHow could you say THAT!!??!! LOL...  I didn't throw the first PIE... The forum made me do it!!!  (If you believe that one, I have some PRIME waterfront realestate in Florida I can sell you DIRT CHEAP!!!)

Hey guys?  Am I able to use yellow glue on the pink extruded foam insulation board?  Or should I just stick (no pun intended) with the foam board adhesive to glue down the cork roadbed?

I have only ever received one Oops message in this forum ever, and that was because my previous user name was deemed inappropriate... I didn't have an issue getting into the diner at all over the weekend, except that it loaded up very slowly.  My issues come in the form that my IE stops working and the message comes (not responding) and then I have to close the program and reload everything, but that only happens when I have multiple pages up at the same time.

I hope everyone had a safe and exciting weekend?

Packers:  Are you taking photos of the boxcar that you are working on?  I would love to see the work you are doing there?

All of my locomotives and rollingstock are in the "Brand-spanking-New" category...  I will eventually get an airbrush, and air compressor, but for now, those items are far down my priority list.

So I've spend the evening with my nose in trackplanning books and annuals, studying diagrams and maps, and so on.  I don't know how anyone ever actually builds anything.  At this rate I'll be planning until 2014 or something.  And the more I plan the more I drift from my freelanced plan to a little prototyped to very prototypical and now "well, maybe 1930s would work a little better and its not like you have that much equipment that starting over wouldn't be that big a deal."  It almost seems like unless I just go to Lowes and get that plywood, I'll tweak the plan forever.

I have not touched a pie shell since I made my retreat from the "Food Fight Arena" back in the last diner!  I just wanted to clear the air.  Ask Chloe, she'll tell you that I have been a perfect angel on that front!  Now just don't ask her about how all your shoelaces got tied together so that when ONE of you stands up the REST of you wind up on the floor!!!

On the layout front, I am just going to go ahead and glue the cork down with the foamboard adhesive.  I can't get an answer from anyone as to whether or not the yellow glue will affect the foamboard...

Good night all!  Hope you have fun getting those triple-square-knot w/slip knot mix out!  (I was in the Boy Scouts ya know!!!)

***Hey, I resemble that statement. My wife's is easy, as she already knows what she does & doesn't want. I, however, am an entirely different story. Can't even decide how wide to make the shelf part of the layout, let alone what all to do with it. Perhaps "If I Build It....The Railroads Will Come"!?!?!?

 Good morning.

It's 38 and clear. Expect the high to be around 70. It will be partly cloudy.

Got the AHM/Rivarossi observation car apart and ready for stripping. I haven't decided yet on the type of doors to fit into the sides of the car. Boxcar doors would be too high. Maybe a couple of cobbled together sliding doors made of sheet metal on tube steel frames. The windows will be covered. I figure some pieces of aluminum foil glued in place over them will make it look like sheets of thin steel were welded over them. I got a little work done on the ice cream shop. After some filing and sanding I got one of the side doors set back into the wall properly. One down, two to go. The disassembled engine house will soon be getting some attention as well.

Morning Sam,

Well if I were you I would be using "No More Nails" in a caulking tube, as you will have alot easier time in getting it up again if you want to change things at alater date.  all you would have to do is slide a large putty knife beween the two surfaces and gently move it back and forth working it further and further and the two should seperate much better than the yellow glue.

I don't use yellow glue for anything other than benchwork.  It is great on holding wood together, but it is pretty permanent. It is not water soluable as is white glue.  But I have had great success with the "No More Nails" for many projects. I use it for putting down roadbed and then the track onto the roadbed. Then it can be easily changed if you feel you would like something changed.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Now we have that responded too, Girls, line me up with a "Hungry Man's Breakfast" before I'm off to workk.

Ya all keep smiling now, ya here.  Check back with you later, maybe even from work if I'm lucky.

Good morning from Euclid, Ohio!

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 31. South wind around 5 mph. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21. South wind between 5 and 9 mph.

Rob, how large of a radius do you want your curves?  That should be one of the deciding factors on how wide a shelf to make your layout.  Another factor is the type of industries you have planed for the layout.  What is the largest rolling stock or locomotive you want to run on your layout?  I would think a 24” wide shelf would be enough for a N-scale layout with the option to go wider for a yard or engine facility.

Sam, I used Elmer’s wood glue to bond my Styrofoam to the plywood layout top.  My last layout when I decided to delete this area I couldn’t separate the Styrofoam from the plywood with a flat bar.  The trick I found is to spread the glue out with a toothed trowel and put weight on the Styrofoam, and then leave it alone over night.  Good zip-lock bags filled with water make a perfect weight; just don’t go with the cheap dollar store bags.  All my cork is secured with Elmer’s wood glue.  Trust me I’ve changed my mind a couple times and it’s a lot of scrapping and colorful metaphors pulling the cork up!

Well I can't believe I made it in.  All I got last night, OPPS!!!  Banged Head

I guess I might do some layout work today.  Fix a few spots on Robs, engine.

Not much planned other than that.

I also think our snow is over for now.  The 14 day forcast has us in the 40-50's.  Not to bad.

Well everybody have a good morning.

Good morning people. We are going to -3C for a high today. Currently at -16C and rising. Sun today then increasing cloudiness tonight with a low at -7C. Tomorrow we will have periods of rain with wet snow thrown in for good measure and a high of 4C. Thursday we are supposed to go up to 8C then drop to -7C on Friday with snow and blowing snow/wind etc----in other words we are now in POTHOLE SEASON--watch those bathtubs!!!ShockBlack Eye

Sam:I'd agree with John on that idea--"No More Nails" works quite well with me too. As for the tying my shoes together---do not be surprised if'n something of the sort isn't done with yours----MischiefWhistling--heeheehee----oooopps-----skulks quickly offstage-----

Got some clear styrene yesterday so I can start my glass atrium project. Still trying different configurations for it though as is typical of the 'design' process. I was scouting some architectural sites looking for ideas as to approaches---think I'll do some more as I've got a couple of ideas so far as to the siting of such---No work today---but different story tomorrow-----Smile,Wink, & Grin

Morning Gang: Well I got OOOPSed right out of the door yesterday. I finally gave up and went to bed. Everything seems to be all right this morning.

Not much going on here. I took Mary Ann to dialysis this morning and came home. She told me to go to bed but after feeding the cats and dogs it  seemed like I will stay up and work on the disk. I got the chiesel plowing done late yesterday so now have to disk to get things smothed out.

I'd better get going.

See you all later.

Mornin' all, Looks like another beautiful day. How about one of those Kentucky ham on a biscuit sam-miches that Jerry usually gets. And I'll try some of ED'OJ please and a cup of coffee thank you.

No complaints from me. I like all the posts. (I know everyone does too really). Good place to get away and have a good time. And you can't beat the egg salad here either.Thumbs Up

Robby, I was told "a Pee-can is something a truck driver carries. It's Puh-con." So we compromise and I say raisin. NO! hah! Just kidding, I say Pee-con. Laugh

Galaxy, Glad it's not anything serious. But don't you just hate to see the docs bill for him to say "let it run it's course"? Grumpy

Barry, I'm glad you spoke of Spring. You haven't mentioned him, her, ?, in a while and I was beginning to wonder if I missed something. Whew.

Rob, Sorry to hear the business is a no-go at this time. Probably isn't meant to be right now. Keep workin' out the details and hopefully someday she'll get there.

Sam, I see we have forgiven you for the last pie fight (don't try and deny itWhistling) and are answering your questions now. So, I guess I'll throw in my My 2 cents. I used Aileenes Tacky Glue. A couple beads let it set for about a minute or 3 and stick it down. Haven't had any problems yet. I do weight it with pretty much anything. and of course pin and weight on curves. That's the ones where you let the Tacky Glue set a bit and get "sticky" before putting it down. Grabs better. I haven't pulled any cork up. but the track I did wasn't on cork and it sticks well and comes up good with a putty knife gentle slide and twisty.

As for these "ooops" messages. I haven't got one on this forum yet. I just get a blank page and no activity. Or a partially loaded page and everything just stops. Most of the time when this happens it is when everything else on the internet is also moving slow. Not THAT slow but noticeably slower.??? What is NOT affected by the speed is if I go to, say, page 9 and everything is fine and then to 10 and 11 then if I go back to 9 it's HUGE. Then sometime later go back and it's not as huge or OK etc. Nothing has changed. No new posts.Confused

NittanyLion, Yup, pick one. You can dwell for years looking for the perfect track plan (is there one?) and drooling over the next. Or you can pick one that is good and looks like it can be added to or altered because as you have already found out. Plans change. And expanding the layout as you get going is a given. Just ask Rob!Smile,Wink, & Grin

Running late best get going. Ya'll have a great day

Morning folks!

Looks like I got TOPS again, 3rd time in a week!

Breakfast and lunch is one me! Dinner

And Happy Mardi Gras!  It's Fat Tuesday and the festivities in New Orleans are underway...until mid-night that is...and then tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and then 40 days of Lent.....

So....I'll have the Uncle Hershel's Special Breakfast  please. Thanks Chloe!   Thats 2 eggs sunny side up, 2 fried pork chops, hash browns, biscuits, saw mill gravey, spiced apples and endless coffee, with some of Ed's OJ too!

Heartland Division CB&Q

Ryan ..... I, too, played in a marching band..... It was long ago.

Well that's cool Garry! What instrument did you play?

pcarrell

OK boys and girls, I'm putting the catapult away now......for good.  (It's too wasteful of perfectly good pies!)

PC, that is a novel idea!  I agree, and with the price of pies these days and the only stimulus package for them is In-The-Oven heat......Whistling

Hey Sawyer, nice loco paint scheme ya got there! What imaging tool do you use?

CNCharlie

Good Evening Diners!

...I too played the clarinet as a young lad. I still have the thing in my basement and a couple of years ago I got it out. Couldn't blow a note.

Hey Charlie! You know my clarinet has to be 30+ years old and I had it refurbished at a local music shop for about $125.00, got new cork for the wood barrels and new pads for all the keys, plays like new again.

NittanyLion

So I've spend the evening with my nose in trackplanning books and annuals, studying diagrams and maps, and so on.  I don't know how anyone ever actually builds anything.  At this rate I'll be planning until 2014 or something.  And the more I plan the more I drift from my freelanced plan to a little prototyped to very prototypical and now "well, maybe 1930s would work a little better and its not like you have that much equipment that starting over wouldn't be that big a deal."  It almost seems like unless I just go to Lowes and get that plywood, I'll tweak the plan forever.

Nittany, I used to resemble that remark! When you get comfortable with a plan and it fits your room, put it down for a few days and walk away from it, then come back to the plan and look at it with a set of fresh eyes. You will be amazed at what changes you might find that will tweak it and make it even better. Then....make that trip to the Home Despot or Lowe's and pick up some wood and lumber, and dry wall screws, and wood glue, and an electric drill, and..........oh..oh...some of those power strips.....I could go on...Smile,Wink, & Grin

OK folks, today's Diner Menu is from the "Broadway Limited" of the Penn Central, Dinner Menu

Mornin' everyone! I got Oopsed out as well again last night. I finally opened up my ancient copy of Safari and got right in. I then realized that on Safari I wasn't logged in. So I tried to log in and Oops! Then I went back to Firefox and since I could get in as far as the general discussion page, I tried logging out. Now Firefox gives me a page with a message that says: The page isn't redirecting properly Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete. * This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies. So this is being typed on Safari this morning. Zoe, lots of coffee! I have a cold and snuffed and Sknonked and couldn'r breathe all last night. Not only that some guy with a chain saw kept me up all night! Kept waking me up!

Good morning!

A large stack of pancakes, and a pot of coffee please...

Conditions have greatly improved here in Clarence: either I'm a fast-healer...or the mild ibuproffen OD has worked, the muscle pain is greatly subsided. Also, Loving Wife broke her fever (I offered to fix it for her, she declined), her color is back to her normal shade of pale, and she's functioning again. She's taking another sick day from work, however. Sounds like she had some psychadellic (sp.) dreams from the cold/flu/sinus meds. Funny thing, I take the same ones, and just SLEEP.

Our internet service provider crapped-out yesterday, finally got us back into the 21st. century this morning. Seems the main provider (Net INS) crapped out, causing our local guys to crap-out. I've about had it with all this crap. I had Net INS directly while living/working in Creston, Iowa...swore I'd never deal with their crap again. Oh well...crap happens!

Have a good, safe day all

Thank you to everyone who answered my questions!  Fortunately I used the foamboard adhesive, not the yellow glue!

The unfortunate part of this project is that I cannot expand to the engine servicing facility at this time.  So I will just expand the trackwork when I can pick up the necessary switches!  I suppose I could have laid the roadbed for the future trackwork, but I'll do that later as well, gives me time to see what's what and go from there!

Nittany:  I have been working on different layout plans for the past 15 years.  The main reason as to why I have only been working on plans is lack of space for a layout.  Now I have some space that I cleared for myself and started with a simple layout that I "borrowed" from the pages of Railroad Model Planning 2006 (page 84), just covering my butt so no one thinks I'm taking credit for a layout I didn't design.  I only added my own little portion onto that main switching layout!

I completely agree with Ryan (Silverspike), when you have a plan that you like, set it down.  I did this and found quite a few things that I changed on several of my layout plans...  It is amazing how your mind focuses on what you want to see, instead of what is actually there sometimes!  Also, good luck on         your   layout!  Please take lots of photos and share your progress with us?!

Everyone:  I didn't realize I was on the blacklist until I apologized and y'all started talkin' to me again!?!  When did I get listed???

I plan on going with DC to start but want all locos that can be relatively easily converted. I'm looking at a Bachmann Mountain and according to the info I can find it is a relatively easy conversion.

The Bmann Light Mountain, Heavy Mountain, and Connie are all easy installs.  My first ever install was a Connie, and it was a snap.  Looked like I'd been doing it for years!  There are several good sources for decoder install instructions in N scale.  This is a good one: http://www.trainweb.org/nrmrc/dcc/conversions.html  Also: http://www.tcsdcc.com/N_Search/search.html  Hope those help!

Trainman Sam
Hey guys?  Am I able to use yellow glue on the pink extruded foam insulation board?  Or should I just stick (no pun intended) with the foam board adhesive to glue down the cork roadbed?

Guess this is probably too late, but here goes anyways........

Yellow glue will work, but it dries hard, so it can amplify sound.  It's also a pain to change things if you ever decide to.......not that ANY of us have ever changed our minds........ Whistling

I use cheap latex caulk for the adhesive.  It works with the foam and the cork, but honestly, I've never been a big fan of cork.  It dries out, gets brittle and hard, and when it gets hard it can actually amplify sound.  Some have suggested that Topper tape (the foam adhesive tape used for hop caps on pickup trucks) is a good way to go, but I found it to be a bit more expensive then I'd like.  But all is not lost friends and neighbors!

I've been using this rope caulk as roadbed for a few years now and it's great!  Dirt cheap too!

(Click any pic to enlarge)

It comes in a roll like this........

And I use a wooden wall paper roller (the kind used to do the edges when hanging the paper) to smooth it and create trasitions in rail height or superelevated curves easily.

It's flexible, and stays that way for many years, so it's quiet, and it's very easy to work with.

I can lay dozens of feet of it in just minutes, and since it's just a little tacky, it stays where I put it with no further adhesive.  Ballast and scenery will hold it in place when all is said and done.  I pull it apart lengthwise for N scale widths, for HO just use it straight from the package.

This, and more, was all laid in about ten minutes and is ready for track.

(This shows with the track installed, but it was part of that which went down in about ten minutes.  Obviously, the track took longer.  The cheap latex caulk I use to secure the track sticks to this stuff well too.)

I don't know if this will work for you, but it works for me!

Trainman Sam
I have not touched a pie shell since I made my retreat from the "Food Fight Arena" back in the last diner!  I just wanted to clear the air.  Ask Chloe, she'll tell you that I have been a perfect angel on that front!

Is that like, the battle front?

Trainman Sam

On the layout front, I am just going to go ahead and glue the cork down with the foamboard adhesive.  I can't get an answer from anyone as to whether or not the yellow glue will affect the foamboard...

Sam, remember, some of us are old farts!  You gotta give us more then two hours to respond my friend!

Yellow glue will work, but it requires copious amounts of water to make it release if you ever want to change something, and water & electricity don't mix well.  It also doesn't mix well with finished scenery.  Lastly, it dries hard, so it can amplify sound.

Good Morning Philip,

Hey good Buddy, what have you been smoking ??   It is WHITE glue that is water soluable not YELLOW.    You need to take another ride on that bike and clear the noggin.

Large coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

***Bill, those are some real neat photos. Thanks for posting them.

***Jerry, what was that Band Master like to work with? Those bands with the larger circuses were known for tight, crisp, sometimes complex & intense rythyms. And just think, whatever the weather, the show (including musicians) had to go on.

***Sam, you are making excellent progress!

***Philip, nice pictoral tutorial there. Want to come over and build mine?

***Lee, the larger the radius the better. Largest loco is a Big Boy and largest car is a whale-belly tank car. Industries: main one is the "Soylent Green Plant". Smallest "Farmer Vincent's Smoked Meats". Wy wife is going to let me model the Deliverence river scene on her layout. (in N scale, who would ever see it?) Yea, it's "that" kind of layout.Pirate I will incorporate some switching area around the main industry, for times when I want to do more than watch trains run. Also, one small turntable. Remember, on each end of the shelf will be a small table. This will allow "loop running", a place for the TT and hopefully a helix. Might never finish it in my lifetime, but by god I want to be running trains before the end of this year. I'll sneak into the train room and see how deep 24" is to work on. Might be just the ticket to have the second level tracks.Smile,Wink, & Grin

Has anyone here ever assembled one of those (Heljan?) tall strait plastic timber trestles? Are they real easy (ie: quick) to assemble?

Keep the coffee coming. Cowboy Rob

Afternoon all. Chloe, I'll take a bacon cheeseburger, thanks.

Forgot to mention that we lost our game on SundayBlack Eye 6-2. THe first playoff game is on Saturday We (4th place team) are playing the same team again (1st place). IF we win, we play for the championship on Saturday. If we lose, our season is over. We are 6-4-2, not bad considering that we're only a second year JV team. I really hope we go varsity next year.

Since we got out early today (parent conferences), I'm gunna run some trains and stuff. Same thing tomorrow (Ash Wednesday).

Have a great afternoon. Prayers for all.
