Good Morning from Tipton IN !

Near a cornfield in Indiana...
Good morning. It's 57 and mostly cloudy. The high will be around the mid 70's and it will be mostly cloudy. Today I'll be back into the work of moving gravel but with a very notable difference. One of my neighbors will be doing all the shovel work and I'll be doing the driving. Progress on converting the 85' observation car to MoW service continues. I've picked out a pair of doors for it. Now I have to cut the openings to set them over. After that I'll be putting pieces of painted aluminum foil over the windows so they'll look like steel sheets were welded over them. "Spring' woke us up this mornin' with him batting at my nose---he then ran to the back of the house and made like the herd of buffalo---making periodic growls. So I go check---someone was trying to pry back door open! I get a nice machete that I have and turn light on, whereupon guy dekes--into the hands of next door neighbour who is a cop!! Thank you lord I'm thinking here--talk about timing! Looks like bud is a known druggie-needs cash for his drugs---oops.
I's be heading out to do some work with a couple of clients this aft. Not much work as we are reconfiguring the client lists for all of us--won't know until next week what the schedule is---
I'll have a breakfast platter and a bucket of caffiene please----need it this morning--

Wow Berry, sounds like you have a good watch cat and a good neighbor. If you give the cat the machette he wouldn't have needed to wake you up - bet you didn't think about that......
Lets try this again. I was going to post my conversation and I get "critical error: unable to open connection to data provider". Boy you can't beat todays technology!!!!!

Barry; sounds like a close call!! I don't know how your law works up north of the border but down here he could've charged you with a weapons offense if you swung at him. Good thing the cop was there. Sounds stupid but criminals have more rights than the rest of us do down here.
Well, back north to see the lawyer today. Now the fun starts.
Eric
Mornin' all!
Beautiful ride in on the bike this morning! It was 31 degrees when I left the house, so full gear was the order of the day. Man, those little thermal packs stuffed in some gloves make a world of difference! Probably won't need them later though. It's supposed to be in the 50's this afternoon.

In other news, I had to take the wife to the hospital last night for an EKG. She been nauseated since last Thursday, and when she went to the doc's yesterday (finally, after me begging her to go), they told her that she had a fast heartbeat, and that could be the cause of the nausea. I'd never heard of that, but we went for the test. It was hard for them to get a good reading because of her nerve damage, but we got it done. We find out the results today. It's strange though, because nothing has changed for her recently. No new medicines, the only change in routine is that the ladies Bible study she hosted every Teusday morning is meeting elsewhere starting last week (so that actually takes pressure off of her). It's odd. I'm concerned, but I know she's in God's hand, so it'll be what He want's it to be.
Oh well, I'd best be off!
Prayers for all in need! Yeah, thats you! (Me too!)
Trainman Sam Phil: Sorry, my ADD kicks in and 2 hours can seem like 2 days! I was asking around yesterday at 4pm about whether or not I could use pushpins to hold the cork down, then at 10pm I asked which adhesive I should use, this morning is when I glued the cork down, but forgot to check the diner for any notes left with Chloe, and sure enough, there is the note about the tacky tape Martite I'll have to keep that in mind for my large layout!!! We'll see what the noise level is for this one too, the cork is actually about two years old!

No problem Sam. As for the noise levels, I think you'd be able to hear sound equipped loco's real well. To give you an idea, here's a video I made quite some time ago now that shows a lap of my staging yard and live interchange. It'll give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Note that about 20 seconds into this there is a sandpaper like sound for 10 or 15 seconds. That is actually my sock as I drag my foot across the carpet! I was trying to keep the camera steady for the shot. It shows you how good the mic is though, and how quiet the rails are. Notice too how the rails get louder where the train enters the staging yard area and the rails are laid directly on the foam. (The perilous dropoffs have been corrected since this was shot. I just wanted to see trains run!) Anyways, here's the vid: http://s83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Autumns%20Ridge/?action=view¤t=262699db.flv
Mornin' all, (yaaawn) coffee, coffee, and um, some coffee please and thank you. Still tired but it's gonna be such a beautiful day I gotta get out.
Tom, glad to have you back. Was hoping the battle ground we had for a while didn't run you off. Very kind of you to take in your friend. And those programs can come in handy. My wife is the same way on the Law and Order/NCIS. The BUH BUH! Is kinda like the striking of a clock on the hour. Helps me keep time. Oh and if we hear of a small earthquake in CA, we'll know Spooky is once again comfortable.
J.R. did you run across that box of engine bolts that you saved but don't remember what engine they go to. But even now still can't bring yourself to throw them away?
Barry, Sounds like the guy will get a bit of doin' without time. Unfortunately it usually doesn't work. Now maybe if he had gotten his little crack smoking, meth controlled fingers into your house...........?
Philip, your wife is in our prayers. She's in good hands.
I haven't received this OOPS message on this forum. I have gotten it a couple of times on my Homepage.(the grain elevator s closing bid page), but never here. What I do get is all of a sudden everything just stops. The frame, shell or whatever you call it of the page loads and then , nothing. The activity light on the modem isn't even flashing. Refresh the page and I'm lucky if even the heading loads. Nothing. Come back in an hour, maybe I can get back on maybe I can't. I find it hard to believe that all of a sudden these long threads and archive hunting or whatever has caused anything. It sounds like the problem only surfaced with this new software. Sounds like the old stuff worked fine. If I remember the first thread for the diner (called something else. Ryan just ref. it a little while ago) was HUGE. If my truck ran fine, and I switched gasoline brands and it started running rotten. After a little bit of giving time to adjust. I wouldn't say "well I guess I just have to quit driving as much". I'd switch back.
Of course, every day at sometime in the morning and sometime in the evening. I loose internet connection. Don't know why, but it seems to have started here lately,. last week or two. This time RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF PC'S VIDEO AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGHHH!! OK it's back. Great layout Philip.
Have a great day!

Rob...Band Master was tuff to play for but He had lots of interesting storys about the old days with the circus..
I tried scatch building a couple of signals..They are made out of brass wire and scraps only "store bought part" was ladder...cost almost nothing to build..Photo isn't to good...
You all have a good one..Jerry
TMarshIf I remember the first thread for the diner (called something else. Ryan just ref. it a little while ago) was HUGE.
Can't remember what it was called right now, but I remember something like 1200-1300 pages or something like that.
TMarshGreat layout Philip.
Thanks! I got a bit further then that before life got in the way. I'm hoping to spend a lot more time on it in the very near future.
A Large coffee, please & thanks!
***Barry, 3 Cheers for "Spring"....Hip Hip Meow...Hip Hip Meow...Hp Hip Meow! A good neighbor there, too.
***Eric, you're right about "criminal rights" these days. Around here it's "Shoot Shovel & Shut Up".
***Philip, nice video, except for that NOISY camera man.
***Jerry, those signals look excellent!
Off to do critter rounds. Have a good day y'all. Rob
jeffrey-wimberlynik .nMy little brother picked up a Bachmann Union Pacfic engine at a thrift store. it is in deplorable condition. Most of the handrails are missing and all of the steps are broken off. where the yellow is supposed to be there is gold. It kinda looks like a GP-40, Does anyone know if this came out of a train set? Or is it an older loco? It also has a "Cartrige Motor", You know, the motor frame and the gearcase are one unit. Also only one set of trucks are powerd. Any advice on replaceing the motor, handrails and steps? HELP! That sounds like one of the Bachmann offerings from the 80's - early-mid 90's. The motor you describe is a pancake motor. It will be amazing if it runs. Those motors were the worst kind of cheap junk. If the shell can be rebuilt you could refit it to a modern Bachmann GP40 frame. In all honesty though you would be better off ditching it. By the time you rebuild it you would have spent enough to buy one of the new Bachmann GP40's with DCC.

Already working on it, but he wants it, and my dad wants to repower, fix it, and make it look good. It runs though.
Looks like Rob has the top of the page. I'll have the bacon and eggs.
Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have a chocolate donut and a cup of coffee, please 'n' thankyou.
No way I'll be able to get caught up on all the pages since I last was in the Diner, so my apologies if I skipped over anything you asked me, folks.
Jeff, thanks on that ice cream building - I'll have to save your pic of that, and try to build something like it. You are taking care of yourself better, right?
So, I see you all have been busy talking about... uh, - oh, that! Of course, one of my pet rants on language would be about the college (females, it mostly is, but I'm sure some guys may do this also) who are totally ('for sure..') unable to string together a sentence without, like , you know, like, putting a dozen of so uses of that word, like.... Sitting in one local restaurant (which tends to have high school age, travelling salespeople and yuppies for the majority of their clientele), I know that our Diners (teens or older) can do much better on verbal skills and make a coherent sentence (well, unless their mouths are full of pies or other food), so why can't the 20-somethings and local high schoolers here? Okay, stepping down from the box now....
Our MRR club meeting was fairly brief on Monday. Our chief architect/DCC master/etc. has been working every day for most of the past two weeks (disadvantage of being salaried...) and was fairly worn down, plus we didn't have the suitcase connectors to start hooking up the feeders to the bus wires, so we had a short meeting and everyone kinda headed out. Kevin at least had time to get his laundry done that night.
Also, I will be possibly starting with DCC on my layout sooner than I'd thought. Our LHS owner/club member had bought some of the DCC stuff from the same guy I bought the structures and car loads. The LHS owner offered me a DB150 (? Think I have the model number right), which can be used as a command station and add the radio jacks (UT-something?) for wireless. He's going to sell me the DB150 for $80, and a power supply for about $25, so all I'd need would be a throttle (and maybe the radio if I want to start with that). The list on the DB150 is about $180, I think (plus the power supply), so I think it's a good deal. Now, to get the track wired out correctly and gapped where needed...
Congratulations to Bama (and your wife, who'll have the more laborious part of the matter...)!
Sawyer - love the color scheme on your Geep!
Oh, on the forum software, when I returned by my bookmark to the page where I'd left off, the type was bolded and another size larger. I hit the reload button, and it corrected itself, at least. But apparently I missed the night of the Ooops messages. (Sounds like a 1950's B&W sci-fi film...)
Abudabbi, eh? Should be a dis-incentive for pie fights...
Barry, good to hear that Spring is earning his keep as your watchcat! Good that you have an officer of the law as your neighbour, too.
PC, will keep your wife in my prayers. That's a bit unsettling for her, I would think.
Well, I'd best finish up my donut and coffee. W**k awaits... Prayers will continue for all those of us in need (most, therefore).
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
LSWrrPC, will there be an updated video posted soon?
As soon as there's something worth showing I imagine.
Jim, thanks, and it is a bit unsettling. And as for the language thing.......what do you, like, mean?
JimRCGMOJeff, thanks on that ice cream building - I'll have to save your pic of that, and try to build something like it. You are taking care of yourself better, right?
And yes, I am taking better care of myself. More gravel will be moved today if everything goes well. One of the neighbors will be doing all the shovel work while I do the driving.
Dern, when I got into the Diner it was at 14 pages, now I finish reading and it's 16!!! I better hurry up and get this post finished so that I can read the next five that show up if the rate continues!!!
Jeff: Might I suggest that you glue the foil to a thin sheet of styrene or if you have the clear windo glazing? I think it would help prevent accidental "tears" from occasional handling and such as well as providing support for the foil (it wouldn't be able to "breathe" and start looking like curtains instead of metal!)
Barry: You have a good guard-cat there... Thank the Lord your neighbor helped out! We wouldn't want you goin' all Friday the 13th on someone!!! LOL
Phil: Thanks for the video! Is all that background noise (other than the sandpaper/sock) the engine? If so, it makes me really glad that I went the cork roadbed route!!!
Todd: I had the same situation last night, everything just froze on me. But I thought it was just my computer because after I closed IE and reopened and got back to the page, everything worked fine...
Eric: Good luck with the lawyer today!
Well, I'm off to the basement to start sanding the roadbed!!! Hopefully I can find some 16AWG wire around here so I can start laying track and wiring!
God Bless!!!
Sam
May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

There's the sock thing, and then there's a place or two where the lens cover was hitting the camera as I moved around, but other then that, yeah, that's the train and the rails. The loco in that was a Bmann Spectrum 2-8-0.
I thought that when the loco was on the rope caulk it was pretty quiet. When it's on the bare foam it's quite a bit louder.
Trainman Sam Todd: I had the same situation last night, everything just froze on me. But I thought it was just my computer because after I closed IE and reopened and got back to the page, everything worked fine...
I get the IE8 hiccup---yup. This mornings message was a different critter though. It quite specifically said that it was a server error--Community Server cannot connect to page type of thing.
'Spring' is all cuddled up by the 'pooter right now-- Here in ON they don't have a Duty to Retreat law but the idiot can charge me!!!!! As for that Duty to Retreat law what dumkopf thought those things up?!?!?!
Mornin' everyone!
Nice sunny day here in the Finger Lakes. Currently 33°F with a high around 37°. I'll be glad to see it start to get warmer as I have about 3 days worth of wood left to burn........ Then the gas furnace takes over.
Barry that is one great little cat you have there (and a good neighbor as well). My cats let me know any time there is something going on outside.......... Mostly when I am trying to sleep. Usually it is just the neighbors dog out or something like that.
Started my taxes last night. TurboTax can't find last years return (think it was on a hard drive that failed last summer) so I have to reenter all the info again........ I'm hoping I can get it done by the end of next week so that I will be able to get to the sales tax forms for the state. Have to drive up to Canandaigua this afternoon for a dermatologist app't and to feed my sister's cat, water plants, bring her mail, etc. Then I have a Cub Scout Pack Meeting to show up for (I am their Commissioner). Probably very ltlle will get done on the layout.
Catch you all later! Prayers for those in need!
Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO
We'll get there sooner or later!
Barry; I don't know who thought that "duty to retreat" stuff up, but it's one of the most riducolus things I've heard of. What could that guy charge you for anyways, because you should be able to charge him for attempting to break and enter.
Last night I bought an Athearn BB PRR 50' automobile box. As of now, I've removed the automobile lettering and the roofwalks. I won't go all the way by lowering the brakewheel and all the other stuff dealing with the ladders, brakewheel, etc since all that stuff is cast on and I don't have the tools and materials to do that. The P2K SP one I might, since all the ladders and stuff are seperate. I'll just have to fill the holes up on the main shell with putty (from the inside so I don't do a lot to the weathering)
Vincent
Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Wow, seems like just a bit ago I was here and look at all these new posts. Busy Diner. Well, since I'm buying, may as well treat myself to a Double Breve.
***Jeffrey, do be careful out there!
Finished chores and removed the hydraulic line to be replaced. Hopefully the local NAPA fella will be able to fix me up with a replacement. Already miss not having the loader and I really don't want to push a round bale up the slope and into the barn today.
Change of plans: I'm nixing the helix idea in favor of a simple rise in elevation towards that end of the layout. Will try to keep the grade around 3%. Still want 2 main lines, but one can be a "mountain line" (steeper grade) while the other remains relatively flat.
I'm seriously considering cutting the door/table in half, as it seems crowded with the wife's Hugely Oversized layout in the same room. While my layout plan shrinks, the realization of time & money required to build one increases.
Rob
Hello again all! I just finished catching up on the new posts after I completed securing the track to the roadbed! Man, we are a talkative group the past few days!!! (heeheehee)
Well, I hope to take some pictures of the layout once the adhesive cures better. Don't worry, I did not glue under the switch points!!! THAT would have been a disaster, and I have heard of people forgetting where the points were and BOOM, you now have immediate Out Of Service tracks!!! Whups!
Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Duty to Retreat where you have to back away UNTIL the perpetrator makes a direct threat of bodily harm towards you or someone else in the dwelling?
Anyway, the motto I hold to is "I'd rather be tried by twelve than carried by six." On the other hand, in Texas (where my brother lives) you can shoot someone just for being on your property! How crazy is this country? The crooks have more rights than the victims... DUMB!
Rob: I like the moonshine site being guarded by the Pink Elephant!!! Rather interesting, and funny, scenery!
Chloe, may I please have a Puh-cahn Pie along with a Caramel Cappaccino in a NH&I mug? Thank you! I'll be in the last window booth overlooking the yard tracks!
Duty to retreat:
American LawSome American jurisdictions require that a person retreat from an attack, and allow the use of deadly force in self defense only when retreat is not possible or when retreat poses a danger to the person under attack. The duty to retreat is not universal, however. For example, police officers are not required to retreat when acting in the line of duty. Similarly, some courts have found no duty to retreat exists when victim is assaulted in a place where the victim has a right to be, such as within one's own home. State v. Allery, 101 Wash.2d 591, 682 P.2d 312 (1984). The Model Penal Code § 3.04(2)(b)(ii) suggests statutory language that also recognizes an exception to the usual duty to retreat when the victim of the attack is in his or her own dwelling or place of work. Many states employ "stand your ground" laws that do not require an individual to retreat and allow one to match force for force, deadly force for deadly force.
English law
In English law the focus of the test is whether the defendant is acting reasonably in the particular situation. There is no specific requirement that a person must retreat in anticipation of an attack. Although some withdrawal would be useful evidence to prove that the defendant did not want to fight, not every defendant is able to escape. In R v Bird (1985) 1 WLR 816 the defendant was physically attacked, and reacted instinctively and immediately without having the opportunity to retreat. Had there been a delay in the response, the reaction might have appeared more revenge than self-defence. It might be different if the defendant sees an enemy approaching and decides to stand his ground. The answer may depend on where the threat is recognised. In a public place, where there are many other people present, a judgment must be made on whether an attack is imminent. As a matter of policy, no-one should be forced out of the streets because of fear, but prudence might dictate a different answer at night when the streets are empty.
