***Philip, nice pictoral tutorial there. Want to come over and build mine?

Shoot, I barely have time to work on my own!

Cederstrand

Has anyone here ever assembled one of those (Heljan?) tall strait plastic timber trestles? Are they real easy (ie: quick) to assemble?

I had one of those in N scale years ago.  It was a good kit that went together pretty well.  Just make sure everything is square each step of the way before you move to the next step.  Mine could be built as a straight or curved, or half and half (a curve that straitens out).  I don't know how well the tooling has held up over the years.  The molds might have a bit more flash on them now, but it's a good kit.

It's exactly as wide as Atlas HO scale track, so you can create your own natural looking ballast profile just the way the real RR's do.  For N scale I just tear it lengthwise in half.  Each roll is about 12 feet long out of the box, give or take (so, 24 feet or so in N scale).  I get mine from the local hardware or home improvement store in the off season (like now) and stock up.  I usually pay around $2-$3 dollars per package.  It comes in the brown I showed, and also a light grey.

Chloe, I am just stopping by for a quick lunch.  It looks like some of these guys are working on their layouts.

Good job.

Rob, I’m running Mallets, Challengers and HW passenger cars.  In the past I’ve used 36” curves and everyone was happy.  This layout I have a 3 track main with 36”, 38.5”, and 41” curves. Everyone is happy.  However I’m running HO-Scale and not N-visible.  I think there is a cross reference chart on the NMRA web site.

I’ve been told you need to build the helix first then the rest of the layout.

Well its afternoon already.  How time goes by.

I have a old Bachman laying around that the wife got me last year.  It wasn't running due to the driveshaft (or what ever you wanna call the piece) was always coming off.  So.......I made the engine a dummy.   Took the motor out, and it runs great.  Metal wheels and all!!!  I will have to take some of the weight out.  Just still a bit heavy.

Well I guess I will watch some more soccer.  Man that use to be my sport.

I will pop in for dinner, plus I need to catch up.

Oh just give it time Lee, and you'll see it too...

It's really very nice, big, friendly letters saying "OOPS!" It's almost like the web techie geeks were trying to make it... light-hearted, almost fun to get a fatal error message.

It's like a "gosh-darn... golly gee whiz... *chuckle giggle snort," shucks...guess we've got a little glitcheroo here folks..." kind-of look to it.

Those rascals...

Hmmm. Maybe I need a little break here...

Coffee refill, please & thanks.

***Philip, never heard of Martite, but going to look into it for sure. Looks like it would work fine for flex track.

I figured out which one of the bundled hydrolic lines for the loader is leaking. Will remove it tomorrow and head over to the nearest NAPA.

After finishing painting some wood strips, I was pounding the lid back onto the can with the blunt end of a large screwdriver when it slipped.Black Eye Needless to say the edge of my little finger was almost removed from the nail. Had to stop to clean and wrap it up. It's gonna look mighty perdy tomorrow. Gittin' tired I guess.Dunce

Need to plant one more tree and then carry buckets of water to get them settled. Was using the tractor for that until the line sprung a leak.

Not exactly my best day ever. CowboyRob

Finally made it back home at 2:00am this morning.  Flight was delayed due to wind in Newark.  Cabin temp never went above 65 and the coffee was always " BEING MADE!" but never showed up.  Felt like I was flying AREOFLOT (Russian airline)

Been trying to catch up on all of these pages!  I've never, ever had an 'oops', a little slow sometimes but the pages always loaded..... I have a Verizon card on the laptop and Optimum at home.  Maybe because I'm in the New York area?  Had no trouble in Texas either..... Why?????  I feel left out.... so alone...

Um.. decaf... and some pie?

Rob,

Back in the days of Link & Pin couplers, you could easily tell a greenhorn from a good man.  A greenhorn still had all his digits.  If he was pretty good, he was missing one finger.  If he was really good he was missing two.  If he was missing three, he was a conductor.

Now Rob, it hasn't worked that way for nearly 100 years.  Walking around without digits is no longer the badge of honor it once was.  Save yourself the trouble......keep your digits!

Be careful man!  We don't want that wife of yours having to practice her nursing ON YOU!

I was pounding the lid back onto the can with the blunt end of a large screwdriver when it slipped.

I quess we've had too many OSHA, POSHA, EPA, training sessions here... When replacing a lid on a can, first clean the lip of the can with a clean rag and properly dispose of the rag, then obtain a block of wood larger than the diameter of the lid and can. Place a new clean rag over the lid, place wood block over rag and lid and press firmly, then tap the wood around the can lid with a rubber mallet until the can is sealed.  Properly dispose of rag and wood, clean any remaining paint from area and dispose of in proper container.

Those digits are important! You can only point with so many of them before you make someone mad!

Hey Sawyer, nice loco paint scheme ya got there! What imaging tool do you use?

'thanks Ryan. Just regular old Microsoft paint. Like I said, I just applied the color (except for the white, which is what was on the loco originally). Stan Lytle actually drew the loco outline.

ok, so my other layout is only really good for running trains, so say hello to my new switching layout (sorry for the bad quality;camera was dying, and didn't have a tripod that reaches that high):

RS-1 #256, and ex-Susquehanna unit, pauses in front of the small yard shanty before switching the yard. The large building w/ all the ivy over it is an abandoned industrial building, and the boxcar in the background is a de-commissioned 40' boxcar.

in this photo, you can see why I can't use a tripod

Very blurry, but you can make out the track arrangment:

and before you tell me, yes, the run-around can't support anything at the ends but the engine. Yes, I know, and yes, it will be a pain, but no, I'm not changing it, because I have no room to extend the layout.

My little brother picked up a Bachmann Union Pacfic engine at a thrift store. it is in deplorable condition. Most of the handrails are missing and all of the steps are broken off. where the yellow is supposed to be there is gold. It kinda looks like a GP-40, Does anyone know if this came out of a train set? Or is it an older loco? It also has a "Cartrige Motor", You know, the motor frame and the gearcase are one unit. Also only one set of trucks are powerd.Dead Any advice on replaceing the motor, handrails and steps? HELP!

That sounds like one of the Bachmann offerings from the 80's - early-mid 90's. The motor you describe is a pancake motor. It will be amazing if it runs. Those motors were the worst kind of cheap junk. If the shell can be rebuilt you could refit it to a modern Bachmann GP40 frame. In all honesty though you would be better off ditching it. By the time you rebuild it you would have spent enough to buy one of the new Bachmann GP40's with DCC.

Yeah, I got OOPS'd out of the diner and the whole web site too last night. That seems to be fairly frequent since the new format. Things that make you go "hmmm".

I also have had a lot of need to re-sign in lately, like every other time I'm on the forum. Anybody else having this problem????

TMarsh

Galaxy, Glad it's not anything serious. But don't you just hate to see the docs bill for him to say "let it run it's course"? Grumpy

Todd

Yes, Todd, when one is sick Dead one wants relief, not to hear "let it run it's course", especially when paying for the advice. But it is a virus, and viruses don't respond to antibiotics anymore {bacterial infections DO} so the treatment nowadays for a virus is to let it go and use products that only relieve the symptoms of the virus.

Last year about this time I checked into the Lourdes Hospital "Grand Hotel" in a specially private third floor room on the respiratory floor overlooking the parking lot for a few weeks with pneumonia, treated with four kinds of steriods and had an opportunistic bacterial and opportunistic fungal infections set in, so I have to consider myself lucky now, I guess. Don't need that again.

Hope everyone has a  swell night!

Gonna bake some brownies tonight, anyone want some?

Evening Gang: The last two cars of my Twin Cities Hiawatha are on the way. I also ordered two additional express cars and two coaches. Being able to get them at whole sale prices has got me into a bad habit. By the way if any of you want some Walthers passanger cars they have a sale in the March Flyer and some of the cars are less then whole sale. Also in the March Flyer is a photo of the Hulett. Since my railroad is at the north end of the lakes I can't use one but they are deffinately NEAT.

Well since I got up at 4am I guess I should turn in. The grand kids are coming at 6:30am. We'll take the oldest to the bus and then take the 3 yr old to breakfast at What-A-Burger and then to pre school. At 12 noon we pick her up and she gets to play with grandma.

Phil:  Sorry, my ADD kicks in and 2 hours can seem like 2 days!  I was asking around yesterday at 4pm about whether or not I could use pushpins to hold the cork down, then at 10pm I asked which adhesive I should use, this morning is when I glued the cork down, but forgot to check the diner for any notes left with Chloe, and sure enough, there is the note about the tacky tape Martite  I'll have to keep that in mind for my large layout!!!  We'll see what the noise level is for this one too, the cork is actually about two years old!

Eric:  Glad your trip was safe!  Hope you get all squared away without going bonkers!  We are here for you my friend!

Jeff:  Thanks for the compliment!  Luckily I didn't have to build the benchwork, so that saved me a lot of time and headache...  I love carpentry, it just doesn't love me back!!! LOL with a big throbbing red thumb!!!

I'm hoping to finish sanding the cork roadbed tomorrow morning, that way I can start on the tracklaying tomorrow afternoon!!!  I just have to relocate my soldering iron!  It is in one of these boxes over heeeEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRREEEEEE

Face PlantMan, when did I put that rollerskate on the floor, wait, the name tag in it says... I can't make it out, starts with P and the last three letters are "ell"  Who could that be??? Whatever...

Anyway, If I am going to be using Bachmann EZ Command, how many feeders should I use on this switching layout?  I'll repost the layout design, but keep in mind that currently I will not be modeling the engine facilities and associated trackage.  I actually found the original drawing of the MRP '06 layout plan, which is the configuration that I have on my layout now...  I am planning on installing feeders on each of the "runaround" tracks, the "main line" which is the track running across the entire layout at the bottom, as well as each of the spur tracks.  Is that about right?

This layout drawing shows the creek that I am currently debating whether or not to put in...  I can always add it at a later date...

Thanks for all the help and motivation to get this layout up and going!  Without talking with you here in this diner, I probably wouldn't have even attempted this project!

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

'Spring' was recently in BIG PICKLE mode---He just ran up the front of the secretary desk in the living room, jumped off the top and tore off down the hall, attacked the back of the chair in the hall, ran back into the kitchen, jumped onto the fridge, on to the cupboard, jumps from there over to the other side of kitchen on to top of cupboard, jumps on to the breakfast nook cabinet then tears into the back of the house. He then ran up the stairs and then, like the herd of charging Rhinos he's become runs back down them again--He's settled down after I caught him in mid flight trying for the secretary desk again and gave him a football cuddle--wherein he struggles to get away from me and I hold on to him----Sheeesh, talk about energy--in a 10yr old cat.Whistling

Evening all:

AAARRRGGHHHHHH!!

Sorry, I've been remiss in dropping by.  I've hit the Forum a little bit in the last month, but not the Diner.  Hope everyone is well.  No, I didn't get kidnapped by Aliens.  I've just been adapting to something I didn't think I'd ever have to worry about--at least not at my late age--A ROOMMATE!!!

Okay, we've been buddies for a number of years, but The Recession put him in kind of a bind.  He's a Pathologist with Kaiser Foundation, and his Stocks just went bye-bye.  He's the guy I might have told you about earlier, whose cat I was baby-sitting while he was looking for a Condo in the area.  After dealing with a whole bunch of Condo-Nazi's, I finally said, "Dang, I've got a fairly big house and spare bedrooms, you might as well move in with Wiezl until things even out.".

Well, he has, and we've been going through a Period of Adjustment (can you say ODD COUPLE, LOL?).  So anyway, here we are PLUS three cats.  He's a very cool guy, and he likes classical music and old movies (so do I) but he has this thing about watching every re-run of CSI Miami/NY/Las Vegas and NCIS that comes on TV.  Man, those shows are really STARK at times, LOL.  He also gets on E-Bay and tells me about all these neat brass locos I might want, which I think is nice of him, but I wouldn't go on E-Bay if my life depended on it.  However, his hobby is Antiques, and he's always looking for Very Weird Bargains.

Luckily, my lady friend likes him a lot, so there's not a lot of conflict in that department.

Anyhoo, sorry about being gone, if you missed me.  Getting stuff in order, you know.

Haven't done much on the MR lately, however I DID get my first Proto 1000 car the other day, a UP drop-bottom gondola.  Weighs a ton.  Unfortunately the detail isn't what I expected, but it'll look okay.

Anyway, I've got a Stupid Question.  Anyway, my MRC DC controller 20 has a dual-mode control--for HO and N, and also for larger scales, mainly G.  The G-scale offers about 18 volts DC, where the HO is the standard 12 volts.  Now I understand that dual-mode DC/DCC steamers take a lot more voltage to realize their maximum range on pure DC, and I've been using just the last quadrant of the controller to work them.   I've been reading that using the 18 volt portion of the control will give you a much better range in the dual-mode.  My question is, will going above 12 volts damage the motors of regular DC?  Hate to sound like a Newbie at this, but I'm really confused.  As you guys know, I've got FAR too many brass lokies that I love and adore, to think of spending the money to pop in decoders---and I've been given to understand that decoders in brass locos don't work that well, anyway--so I'm just wondering what kind of problems I'm in for just popping the control up to the higher DC voltage.

Any and all answers will be appreciated.

Sorry if I've been remiss here--it's just been really BUSY around here.  Besides, as I told Barry in a private e-mail, Spooky the Princess has decided to get a stuck hairball that I'm trying to oil out of her.  She is not a happy kitty.  Vet said to give her hairball medicine every hour on the hour.  Remington and Wiezl can hardly wait to see which end it comes out of.  It should be the size of Nebraska.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Been busy with the shop move as we're trying to get finished up this week plus get a car shipped to Fla for this weekend. I had hoped to go back to west Palm Beach for the event and stay through Sebring next week but am so far behind in the move that i sent the guys down without me. The Sebring 12 hour race weekend will be my next time out and we should be settled by then. The joys of moving 10,000 sq ft of accumulated stuff from the past 30 years plus the cars and shop equipment.

Did go to the museum last night for layout work. Still making stuff for the O-gage and finished the elevated track which features an RDC shuttling back and forth. If I ever recast the portals, I'll get the roundhouse done and buid a hill with tunnel to hide the end of the RDC's back and forth. We used a Dallee back and forth module in DC and converted the RDC (a Williams) to DC as well so it is less prone to stalling out. Next will be to find some O scale building fronts to bash into a two level train station.

Gotta run, I was in early to get the truck launched and need to get back after the rest of it, still lots to move if we're to finish by the weeks end.  CUL, J.R.
