Great Northern 2-6-8-0

Can't remember the class, but some were rebuilt as BIG mikados in about 1930.

There are few locomotives with my wheel arrangement.

As an eastern beast, I was built by Baldwin in 1935.

I'm small for the number of wheels I have.

I was built for fast freight service.

All of my group was sold to the B&O in 1947.

What am I?

I'm a passenger locomotive with an Eastern Road.

I'm unique in that I had both a name once and I had two different styles of streamlining.

At least the road, class and name are needed.

A smart answer will include the road number.

To prove you are clever, nominate another locomotive with two styles of streamlining!

Both of you are correct!

But nobody went for the alternate answer!

So I'm asking the same question, except, in this case the individual locomotive name was removed with the fitting of the streamlining but the train name appeaed on the first streamlined casing.

Again, road name, class (just the first two characters, the third one changed) and number. Extra credit for the removed name.

The other twice streamlined locomotive was:

B&O Class P-7 4-6-2 number 5304, originally "President Monroe"

Streamlined in about 1937 for the Royal Blue (with that name on the casing).

Also shrouded differently in about 1948 for the "Cinncinattian"

I was struck by the similarity of the two loco numbers, 5344 and 5304.

40 of us coal burners were intially built.

The later version of us was much easier on the eyes.

We served an infamous Western road.

I think answering is easier than asking!

Having researched and written a book on Chinese locomotives, data on US locomotives is easy, by comparison, to find.

Let's try again!


There were two locomotives. They were built as freight locomotives, but were rebuilt for passenger trains in 1939. They were a success, and two new classes followed based on the rebuilds. The rebuilds were very similar in appearance to much more famous passenger locomotives, which the new classes replaced on the important trains. These all belonged to a big Eastern road.

Road, class, wheel arrangement, and road numbers, please!
