Let me give this a try.

I am a mid-sized steamer named after a state.

Some of my class was built by Baldwin, others were built by the road I operated on, but all were rebuilt to my road's specifications by the 1930s.

I was in coal service/manifest freight service until all of my class was retired in 1958.

I was rarely seen east of an Illinois town that was also a hub of my road.

All engines in my class were coal burners, but I also saw oil burners operate on the railroad that rostered me.

4884bigboy: A mid-sized steamer, named after a state, that was operated on a Midwestern road.

I have huge 80" drivers.

One of our group was modified with Caprotti poppet valves.

I spent alot of time in the Northeast.

We were built in 1929.

I am the largest Pacific type.

Very close. It is a Pennsy Pacifc, but not that class. Note-- the largest Pacific type.

Yay! I won! I guess I'm up again, Aggro.

I am one of the few steam locomotives better known by a name than my class or number.

I am a semi-streamlined passenger locomotive that operated in the East, and I had 84" drivers.

I was handed over to a subsidiary road for a while, then returned to my home road.

I was built in 1935 and ended my service life pulling 5 car trains between Washington,DC and Cumberland, MD.

I was the only locomotive in my class.

I was owned by the Milwaukee Road
I am a class S2
I ran out of Minnestoa
I was suppose to be an S1 so I could run on lighter track but the War Production Board said no
I had 10 of my class built

What Am I?
