Sorry Lee: No I'm not a member. Though I should be as I 'm a firm believer that GPS and DGPS is not the "great I am" as some Bureaucrats and Technocrats would have us believe. When we came into Halifax Hbr last week and the fog was so thick it was actuallt rolling in the Bridge Window it was a nice feeling to hear the Bell buoys as we passed them. We've put far too many eggs in a basket to save $.  Ooops did I say that! Must be a dinosaur.

PS tell the Girl Friend that Musquodoboit is by far one of the prettiest places in the World, Where a phone call to heaven is a Local Call.

Evening Gang: Mary Ann and I just got back from the creek and getting the cows out of the pasture. The watering is going good but spotty. I'd like to have a proper irragation system but even a small one runs $3500 +. We'll look at the results of the make shift job and see if it's worth it.

Lee I'm not a member of that group but I should be. I'll look into it again soon. What is the url for that LNM that you do? I'm always interested in what's going on up on the lakes.

Tom it's good to hear that Lowell is doing well. Hows the cabeese steeling cat doing? The manger of that mine needs to get after his crew. There isn't any taillings at the bottom of that trestle.

Well the girls want me to take them down to the pit so they can try and rescure some more turttles.

Good Night All

Looks like I've got page 3. Plenty of fresh brewed for any night owls here. And since it's my tab, I'll go ahead and order some wild caught Grilled Salmon with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and vegetable medley.

Here's the locomotive. It's been repainted but hasn't been decaled and weathered yet.

And I know someone here was wondering how the water tower would turn out. I trust this meets with your expectations.

***Jeffrey, excellent job on the weathering. I especially like your work on the hopper.Thumbs Up [tup]

***Tom, very nice work on that mine. Cute little ore car and the big ol' steamer sounds like part of your family. Speaking of which, good to hear Lowell is doing well today.

We now have two cats on the porch "again". Smitty has a bad front leg (this time it's the other side). And Jambo has a bad rear leg, holding it high in the air. Don't know what is going on, but for heaven sake enough kitty injuries already. Can't afford to keep making trips to the Vet. Wife will take a good look at them tomorrow and see if there is something we can do here at home for them first.

Inlaws are back in their room at the semi-assisted living facility tonight. I really look forward to getting some sleep tonight. Running on about 3 hours today.

Well I removed 3 Mainline curves today and will have to order 4 No. 8 Turnouts to get the right  curvature. $$$$$ I fear.

No Tom, there is no marble at Taylor's.  It is a small, wood-frame structure so small one wonders how so many cooks and ingredients can fit there to produce so much food, but no Bratwurst.  Eating is outdoors, mostly under umbrellas over picnic tables.

Jim:  Look out the window, the Yellowstone dropped off four cars of Mexican OJ.  Word has gotten around, by golly!

BTW, thought I'd post this, it was a little late for WPF--my new 'tailings trestle' for the Champion Mine.  The loco behind it is an old Max Gray/KTM Espee MT-3 that sounds like a coffee-grinder but hauls like several dozen Belgian beer-horses.  The loco itself weighs 5 pounds and makes my bridges creak, LOL!  She's due for a trip to the LHS for a BIG NWSL can.  Sure is a sweet loco, though.

Lowell's doing well, in case you're interested--ate like a horse today, and right now is a very Happy Camper due to the fact that Sunday's his day off from the injections.  Of course, I still have to pill him before dinner--THAT'S a trip, believe me!

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Evening all,

I see everyone found their way to the new diner.

I installed 10 ground throws and 2 spotlight towers in the yard this weekend, not to mention I sorted most of my rolling stock and started a box of stuff to go to the Bay for reassignment. Nothing I would consider ‘junk" just stuff too modern for my layout.  I might go back downstairs and finish the ground throws.  I found 4 bad order turnouts in the yard, what a pain in the neck to cut those out and replace without destroying everything around them.

Mitch, the "big" train show is coming up at the Berea fairgrounds on 4OCT08.  I'm not sure what I need but I bet it will be there, LOL.  Last fall a guy was selling new in-the-box unassembled roundhouse kits for $2 each.

Toledo and Fostoria train shows are in September.

Jeff, I assume no lightning strikes?  .75" of rain, well that should hold down the number of grass/field fires for you.  When does your rainy season start? November?  Nice weathering job on those cars, where's the locomotive?

Flash, sounds like your dad is making good progress.

Paul, are you a member of the ore group in Yahoo?

Fergie, you don't work ATON do you?  That's my new job down here in Cleveland; I publish the Local Notice to Mariners (LNM) and since we share several waterways with Canada I find myself publishing some of their stuff as well.

Packers#1 is that you on your icon?  Interesting shot, is that a reverse negative or something?

Jim, I hope they have a way to turn those locomotives at each end, what a pain to drive that backwards 200 miles.

OK, back to work for me.

It's been one thunderstorm after another today with lots of wind and lightning, but very little rain. We got 3/4's of an inch this morning.

No Problem guys. Glad to do it. I'm feeling wiped today, so we'll keep it short.

Tom: Surely not! She;s much better lookin, better sounding, and smarter, than the one on tv. Funny what moneyu will get one to do. Least your standards are high around here. Keep our mugs full and we're happy lil campers.

GG: Long as it;s in the family, all is right with the world.

T'was up to the Indy Transportation Museum gettin' oriented today for the Fairtrain. I'm working 330-Midnight Wednesday throu Sunday. Then It;s morning shifts until the end the 17thminus the 14th and 15th for School. Ugh. It;s that time already. No pictures, I wanted to at least appear diginified today. 587's Boiler is near complete. Still need to re-assemble the pistons, and reattach the cab. Soon! By Mid next year.

Did I say Dad's in the Rehab? He is, at Heartland, on the West Side. They're working on his endurance. He can sit up for a while and walk to the bathroom. Any longer involves a walker and an assistant.

Band? Did somebody say Band?

Afternoon, Flo - I'll have a ham sandwich and a root beer float, please.

Thanks! I was considerably tempted to go with some of those chili dogs that Jeff was having (I think he was - only got a brief glimpse before he wolfed down the last bite of 'em), but I forgot to bring my Tums with me...Whistling [:-^]

Jeff, I'm guessing that the plug door boxcar is the (formerly) UP one in the kit? Good job on the 'light' weathering. Thumbs Up [tup] Will the boxcar be lettered for the Midland next? Oh, and nobody asked, but we could hold the 'Welcome Home' party/picnic in your park, if the picnic pavilion isn't reserved already. You already have a suitable ball diamond there. Yeah!! [yeah]

By the way, I heard back from JP in email - said he was delayed on day, but would be heading out and be back either late Monday or early Tuesday morning. So our morning crew of Diners may be the lead contingent in the greeting party (until the rest of us get some coffee in our veins...).

Lee, that's something with the RR resurrecting the E-units for that run. Now, if we could get our government to think as clearly as that about more efficient ways to transport stuff....

[rant] ...This morning, our pastor's message (not political otherwise) was titled 'Get Going,' (something Congress isn't well-known for) and he even challenged our U.S. legislators to contact him and explain (even to just the couple of thousand people who attend here) why exactly they felt okay with doing nothing on passing an energy bill before checking out for their 'summer recess.' SoapBox [soapbox] [/rant] (a local TV carries the service in this area)

PC, hope you were able to prepare some more for your class today. I'm guessing that you were able to send the crews out to do the actual hands-on checking of the lines/equipment, right? Thanks for reminding me about who Cliff was - hadn't seen Cheers in a long while (not carrying cable and our local on-air channels don't have it in reruns - closest they carry is the Frasier show).

Good to see you in again, DerJohn - oh, and trust me from what I've heard, you do not want to see Vinnie like the second picture in DerJohn's post (especially not in the alley out back of the Diner...) Shock [:O]

Alex, what you should've done with those bills would be to just ask Vinnie to 'collect' for you. The commission he charges (I hear) isn't much, and after he calls on someone, the word gets around and everyone else starts paying up promptly.Oops [oops]

Packers#1, have fun at the beach (and don't get too sunburned). We'll see you after you get back.

And thanks, Morgan, for using your 'mobile to tow the Diner to the new location. I'm glad we're not right up on the diamonds, with how much that last Yellowstone rumbled my plate, though. Wink [;)]

Got some patching and filling in cracks in the corner joints of my Roberts building kitbash yesterday. Will hopefully this afternoon/evening get it sanded down smooth and masked off for the brick areas to be painted. But I have the DR table to clear off again. Got the vaccuuming done earlier this afternoon, at least. Smile [:)]

We had a bunch of rumbles/thunder this morning when I was in church, but no sign of rain when I went back out to the car, and no sign this afternoon. Some clouds, but nothing out of them.  85 F and 60 percent humidity currently, and they're talking temps of 97 F Monday and Tuesday (with heat indices of 100-107 F!). JP wouldn't know he wasn't in the sandbox if he came here on Monday or Tuesday(!).Shock [:O]Cool [8D]

I'll go sit at the corner booth with Tom and wait for the next Yellowstone to come by.  Prayers for CN Charlie's FIL, Rob's in-laws and all our others in need of healing.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Afternoon folks-I was figuring the diner was going to move soon-I figured I'd better check in before anyone thinks I died or something.

Been an interesting last few weeks-I got the promo at work, & now I work 5AM-12PM instead of 1-9PM. A little bit of a raise, but at least it's something. Granted, it's going to take awhile to get used to the schedule change (in bed by 9-up at 4) but at least I don't have to deal with the public anymore!

Lee-thanks for the F9 pics. Anytime I hear about an F unit still operating somewhere it does my heart good as they were always my favorite type of loco.

Speaking of, along with a few other projects, I've been trying to make lemonade out of some of my "lemons", namely old almost useless locos & cars I've had for years. Currently I'm working on an old Athearn BB F7B dummy I got when I was a kid. Originally a B&O unit, I eventually painted it back then (I should say slopped paint on-ugh!)

Anyways, I've dug it out, stripped it, & it's to represent a static unit sitting on a siding of my planned loco rebuilding facility on the future layout. I'm painting it to represent a unit that was supposedly a unit used on my RR in the 50's & 60's, then downgraded to MofW service. I'm finishing up painting it in an old "passenger" scheme, & then plan on painting it HVS MofW orange, with the old scheme coming thru in places. I'm also detailing it with various parts to brush up on my loco detailing skills. We'll have to see how it comes out.

Hmm-talking about that is giving me the itch to hit the workbench to see what I can do with it today for awhile.

Have a good afternoon/evening folks-I'll be back soon!

Hi Gang:

Lee thanks for the photos and video. The F's are hauling taconite from the ore dock at Taconite Harbor back to the plant for use there. Cliffs is going to do some nuggets and build a furnace there to use them.

Well I've got to run. It's over 100 again and I have to check the pump at the creek. I set it up around 1:20 so it should be about due for some fuel. It only had 1/2 a tank. I don't know how much good this flood irrigation will do, but it can't hurt. The pump can move 18,000 gals a hour so I should have about 30,000 gals on the field. You got to figure for the length and rise of the run will reduce the amount some.

See you all later.

Just been doing a little mr work today. The rolling stock from my newly acquired Athearn set looked too clean, so I weathered them a bit with alcohol and black acrylic treatment.

Well, Well, I wondered when I dropped by the other night at page 193 if perhaps we'd be moved on soon.  Thanks Morgan for hosting the move. Thumbs Up [tup].

Fergie: yes, that's the ship all right. It came in with the crane raised, and left with it as shown here.  There is a bell buoy in the area where we saw it, but around the headland a touch, so we couldn't see it doing anything. Thanks for all the info on the good Earl.  Not stuff we were taught in history classes in England; and hadn't picked it up here in 40+ years!  (We did get to hear about General Wolfe, and the Heights of Abraham.  He, BTW was born a few villages over from where Kris is from in Kent.)

By Tom:  To further Jim's remarks about the diner--Flo works on the weekends, you can tell her from her big 'Tricked-Out' name-tag.  She's the cute little brunette who works weekdays on those funny TV car-insurance commercials ("SURPRISE!!--um, let's bag these up.").
...and folks ( especially those new and fairly new to the diner (, BTW) please don't forget that the staff are under the watchful eye of their usefully connected relative, Cousin Vinnie. otherwise glimpsed as

Tom, you say the OJ train was passing through the diamond?  Maybe the train orders hadn't been changed since it left Mexico, and it was going to the old Diner?

CN Charlie. Thanks for letting us know about your F-I-L.  Please let your lady know that we are praying for him, and the family. Angel [angel]

Much to do, none of it mrr, regrettably. TTFN

in a "SOUTHERN" mug, please & thank you!

***Lee, those are mighty beautiful F9's. Excellent pics! A taconite revenue train, who'd have thunk it! Suppose it must be cost effective, but I am surprised.

***Philip, it's tough doing things when your body is crying out for rest, even when they are important. Hope you get caught up on sleep soon. You're a good soul!

Had a real banger of a storm come through here yesterday. Some good wind gusts, lots of lightning, and mostly pea size hail. Did see several penny-sized hail. Sounded like rocks hitting the roof. It's just natures way of pruning small dead branches.

Have a great day, all.

Hello ..

I just put the yellow star rating on the thread. That way JP can find this place. He said he will be back home on Tuesday. Jeff's already warming up the marching band to celebrate. Who's planning the picnic for JP?

The chapel car is spotted at the diner. Prayers for CN Charlie's dad. Also, for continued recover for Flash's Dad. (What's the latest, Flash?)....I hope Terry can eat that cheeseburger soon......... and for all others in need.

Looks like Bill had a new breakfast menu. yum!

Dick .... how's the garden doing now?

Tom is "expecting" his next mallet and his excitement is quite noticable. The Z-6 sounds like a nice engine.

And there's Fergie and his 2-10-4, and he's working on the track curves to accomodate it.

Lee ........... thanks for the links to the F9's.

Jeff ... you made me hungry with the picture of the chili dogs. You just had to post that, didn't you?

I actually had some mrr'ing time and spent it in the wood working shop. I'm making more bench work to extend the layout.

Happy Model railroading

Morning all from SunnyCal--

Flo, how about my usual bacon and cheese omelette and some of that OJ?  Thanks, hon.

Supposed to be 94 here today in the Central Valley, with a slight breeze.  Hope they're right THIS time--it was supposed to be 88 yesterday and it topped out at 102.  I've got a buddy who yells at the Weatherman on KCRA every day--ain't HIS fault, he just goes by the numbers on a computer, LOL!

Like the new location a lot--sure is a BUSY diamond.  Oh, and Fergie--it wasn't the new Herbal tea, because I'm sipping a Mocha, and that Yellowstone just rumbled by AGAIN!  This time it was pulling a reefer train of Mexican OJ.  Hm.

To further Jim's remarks about the diner--Flo works on the weekends, you can tell her from her big 'Tricked-Out' name-tag.  She's the cute little brunette who works weekdays on those funny TV car-insurance commercials ("SURPRISE!!--um, let's bag these up.").

I was in the LHS yesterday picking up some 'ore' for the mining project, and was informed that Sunset should be shipping my new Z-6 4-6-6-4 baby sometime in September.  It's embarrassing when you leave a trail of drool while walking out the door, but I'm afraid that's what I did.  They're also shipping some Espee Moguls ("Valley Malleys") about the same time, but I was surprised that those little puppies will require a 24" minimum radius (the Z only requires a 30").  Must be a LOT of piping 'twixt loco and tender on those little 2-6-0's.

Yah, I know--what am I going to do with a GN challenger on the Rio Grande?  Well, it's a 'permanent Loaner.'  I mean, my two L-105's are over-extended, and the L-97 UP clone just ain't cuttin' the mustard in these here hills.  And the Z's have about 104,000 lbs of TE, almost as much as the 105's, so it should be a pretty good match.   After all, I have to get all of that late-season California produce to you folks in the Midwest and East--otherwise how can you enjoy all those peaches, pears, apples, artichokes and strawberries, LOL? Tongue [:P]

Well, that's it for now, have to get ready to go play Noon Mass--the regular Noon musician is in Santa Cruz this weekend--lucky her.  But that's okay, at least I get to work with a really CUTE little soprano.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Tom

Cliffs-Erie Railroad started operations on 28JUL08.  The 200 miles of track has been unused for 20-30 years.  I just read that the company is investing $708M in this venture.  I hear there is tons of MOW work still to be done and the blast furnace they intend to open has been cold for 30 years.

Here is a movie of the A-B-B-B in action.

I think the F9 will keep running since the shipping season shuts down November - March.

Jeff, have you ever had to use an Indian Pump to fight a grass/field fire? Talk about work, for the diners that may not know an Indian Pump (built by the Indian fire pump CO.) is a water tank you wear on your back and the nozzle is like a giant pump action water pistol.

Yes I have, and believe me, you can have it. We retired our old metal frame Indian pump some years ago. Now we have several new ones that are made of nylon and canvas. They come with a rubber hose and plastic pump nozzle. We usually strap one to a newbees back and tell him to go put out the fire that's raging through the woods at the time.

Good morning, sunny here today at least for a while, TS's and heavy rains once again in forecast for this afternoon. If we ever get the remnants of a hurricane here like back in 1955 with hurricane Diane with her 11" in 30 hrs, we are in deep doo-doo. All the lakes, ponds, and streams, are at top level. Too muggy to be outside today fro long, so I will be catching up on a lot of MRR reading. Trains and MRR mags arrived in mail yesterday, a great article in MRR on the expansion of their layout (N scale) but very appropriate for any scale. Nice techniques used.

I see we have a new location for the Diner, I like it here better by the Diamond, we get to see action now on all sides of the Diner. Duke crashing into the trash cans with his bike, Jeff roaring up with his souped up car and there goes a Berkshire with a 120 car drag across the diamond......hey, is that SCOTT I see on that GP7?

PC: Sit down and have breakfast lad, you look real tired after getting up so early this morning on that job over at wrinkle city! LOL

LEE: Hey those were great photos of that old girl. I noticed that the tracks are very unused, and the ties look very old and worn. Is this a new operation starting up at an old plant that has been idle for years?

FERGIE: More rain up your way I see, that pesky upper level LOW is headed right up over Nova Scotia today and tomorrow.

Later guys,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !!
