Good Evening Diners,

Thanks everyone for the kind words and thoughts on my father-in-law. Sadly he didn't make it and passed away on Saturday night. It has been very rough for my wife as she was close to her dad and certainly was a 'daddy's girl". I'll certainly miss him as he was a close friend too and we did a lot together. He was only 15 years older than me and so I never thought of him as a father figure. If your wondering about the small age difference, no my wife wasn't a child bride but rather it comes from one family where parents were older(mine) and the other younger(hers). In fact one of my wife's grandmothers was a year younger than my mother.

I do like the new establishment and as the staff has all moved too, what could be better. The old place needed a few renovations anyway and sometimes it is just easier to move.

I can't see me doing much model railroading for a while as I have and will be busy with the arrangements and then gettin my MIL settled in her new circumstances.

I'll keep looking in though as I like to hear what you are doing and sometimes I'll just be sitting quietly in the back booth with a cup of coffee. Join me if you like.

Evening all,

We are suppossed to get rain tomorrow and possibly lightining, not what we need with the fires. But I doubt it will happen, they have been saying this all summer and we haver not had so much as a cloud. Anyway next 2 days I have off of work which will be nice. I plan on starting the benchwork for my new layout. Smile [:)]

Good evening, mostly cloudy all day today but not muggy and no rain...yet. We have rain right on our doorsteps and heavy rain scheduled for next 24 hours. It just keeps coming. I did manage to get the second step re-surfaced with cement top mix today, but I covered the whole thing with a tarp due to the expected heavy rains. I was going to seal the driveway but I need 24 hours of no rain, and that won't happen until next Monday by the looks of the forecast.

MIKE: That "is" a problem with no chain saw, no truck, and no woods nearby to supply your wood. The central boiler doesn't need much attention Mike, a neighbor that has one just throws a large log in there and it burns a long time. These logs are huge, they are not your typical 24" jobs, they are like 5 feet! So you don't have a lot of cutting, and no splitting is needed. I'm a little more fortunate here, central New England is all woods and we own about 9 acres of hardwood. For those who don't own enough wooded area, the State allows targeted cutting in the State forests to maintain healthy forest. But, you certainly will need a truck or at least use of one from a friend. Of course you could rent a trailer or truck.

JEFF: Did you dodge most of that rain from the Gulf storm?

A word of advice on email scams: There are Nigerian scams, Lottery scams, and certainly Bank or Credit card scams in which you receive very official looking emails. But please keep in mind, your bank will NEVER send you email concerning anything about your account that requires you sending classified data. They will always contact you by snail mail. And they will NEVER ask you to send private info via email like your account number/s. Don't fall for that BS, the bad guys are counting on you being stupid and gullable. One scam that has caught thousands of people is the one where some guy in high office has to get money out of his country because the rebel government is going to confiscate it all. Ya right, why wouldn't they just open a Swiss account. Be careful guys.

Time for bed,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Things are good. Don't take it personally, there just wasn't much need for a round table N scale discussion at the time.

Good evening Diners! I'll have a green tea please, as it's getting late here.

Rob:

Ryan, can you imagine drill presses, lathes, etc... in N scale? Nice job on those.
...I can Jim! Bring them on! In the mean time, check out the snowblower...

Paul:

I used to soak weeds in glycerine. I'll try that. Of course there is also dry them and dip in dilute white glue.
...I've used a hot glycerine soak, and the dried method.  The only reason I'd go back to the glycerine is if I knew the tress were going to take punishment (like foreground trees can).  I keep reading that the various ground foams used as "leaves" on any of these trees is best fixed with a cheap hair spray.  Haven't found that cheap spray yet!

RT: Great to hear about your good results!

I have enough problems I don't want to add diabetes to it.
... Amen to that, brother!  Don't forget it isn't just "sugar" on the label, but all kinds of sweeteners like honey, corn syrup and so on.  I find things made with white flour, even pasta, can spike my blood sugar, as can potatoes.  Every one's different, so the best way is to get a blood sugar meter and track what kinds of foods do what to your blood sugar levels.  Then you'll know for sure what you can and can't get away with.  The long term effects of diabetes are not fun, and are controllableMy 2 cents [2c]

Jerry:

Ryan..Nice paint job on the machinery..I keep 5 or 6 spring cloths pins on the work bench for all kinds of uses They make good clamps when glueing...
...[#ditto] on the nice job Ryan!  I got a chocolate box full of those spring clip hair grip things at a garage sale way back, they're great too, and make handy heat sinks for electronics soldering, since they are metal.

Non-mrr chores and projects still taking up the days.  Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

I get those all the time. They're intent is to make you think there's a problem with your account and that they can take care of it for you but they need some info first. Usually your full name, address, phone #, date of birth, etc. The bank already has this info so why would they need it again. Add to that that the bank IS NOT going to contact you through email unless you specifically tell them to. They use an old fashioned device called a telephone (today's cell-phone toting youth may dimly remember what those are) as their primary means of contact. I've gotten these emails obstensibly from CityBank, BankCorp, BankOne, VisaUSA, Chase ManHatten, shoot, I even got one from the Second Savings Bank of Nigeria! the list goes on and on.

Good grief!  I'd never even open an email message from such an address which purports to report/advise on my financial dealings.  I would check with the bank, however, to see if my accounts are in order and report the apparent spurious/fraudulent email to them. It is disturbing that the sender had such information about you.  I'd request the bank to have its fraud division look into this.

The amounmt of rain we've gotten here today could be considered a lot if you lived in a thimble, but in actual fact it was barely enough to get the windshield wet.

Jeff:  Looks like the brunt decided on Galveston and East Texas instead, at least to the reports we're getting out here in not-so-sunny Cal.

Cloudy day here, today, about 90, and a little humid.  Clouds are winging up from the south (Mexican hurricane) and hitting the Sierra, which means they're slopping down here into the Valley.

Took Lowell in for his daily injections, one of the Vets phoned HER pharmacist and told him to put his appetite stimulator into liquid form in beef broth and mail it to me.  Mr. Mellow is NOT a pill-cat and I'm getting the marks to prove it.  My right arm right now looks like the NY Times crossword puzzle.  Should get it tomorrow or Thursday.  He's eating pretty well, still, and hasn't started vomiting--yet.  That's a bad sign.  But then, like I said, there's a cat that's usually ahead of me who's survived three years of this kidney disease so far, and is still perky.  Lowell's holding okay.  Sleeps a lot (what cat DOESN'T), and comes out just in time for the afternoon LAW AND ORDER re-runs (he's a Jerry Orbach fan).   He's down to about eight pounds, which is a MAJOR drop for him, but as I said, he's still holding.  We'll see.  Want to keep the little guy as long as I can, but NOT past suffering mode.

In the meantime, I bought some scale WWII tanks at the LHS so I can make up a total troop train for the layout--kits.  Holy Cow,  talk about a bunch of little PARTS--and I thought building a Red Caboose gondola kit required a magnifying glass!  Anyway, between the tanks, the Jeeps, the Howitzers and the Troop transports, I should really have something for all of those 'empty' flatcars of mine to do, LOL!

Well, back to work trying to place a machine-gun on a turret.  Who said this hobby doesn't go into places you never imagined? Mischief [:-,]

Later, all.  Best to all (and welcome home, JP) and prayers to those in need.

Evening Gang: Not much going on here. I played taxi driver most of the day again. No wounder I can never get anything done. There isn't alot going on other wise. No rain and it doesn't look like there is much chance of any. It may cool down a bit by tomorrow for a couple of days and then back to 100+. It's about 105 again. I started the pump again this morning and then got down there again about 4:30. I fixed up the " spider " for the end of the 3 inch hose and it seems to be working well. What I did was to put 4 " Y" fittings in a row and took off of each with a 2 inch line about 20 feet long. That gives me a fan spread of about 40ft. I'm going to make the legs of the spider 40ft long tonight or tomorrow. That will make the fan spread 80 feet. I'll be covering more ground in less time. I hope.

Been bust here today. My father and I have been up since early this morning tying down anything that couldn't be moved indoors. We moved my mother's small potted plants inside, the bigger one's will have to weather the storm. We're watching as the storm bands dray closer and hoping we don't get too much in the way of wind.

Good Morning Diners! It's

WELCOME HOME DAY for JP!

And I understand that Ryan has been working up a special menu, assisted by PC in the BBQ department, correct guys? Dinner [dinner]Yeah!! [yeah] And of course, there will be cake and ice cream,

RBF's

and a lot of yummy eats and drinks in the Diner.

Zoe, I'll have a cup of coffee until the guest of honor gets here. Thanks!

Tom, your UP guy probably is just used to the BigBoys being more publicized in the general RR media. Until I met you in the Diner, I hadn't even heard of Yellowstones, but had heard of Athearn's BigBoys ('cause they were in some email notices they sent me). Good that you only had the one (minor) derailment during your demo'ing. Thumbs Up [tup]

Rob, you might want to get one of those BIG towels to throw over that cat when you get ready to give it its next dose of antibiotic. Ouch! Good to see all our stragglers are finding their way to the new location. We were hoping the birds wouldn't eat *all* of the bread crumb trail we left you. Wink [;)]

Gav - how's your summer coming along so far? Enjoying that silence, I'm sure?

JR, good to hear they have permits lined out and are beginning to start on things. Hopefully, they will develop momentum as they get going past the sheets and basic structure. Yeah!! [yeah]

All our upper Midwest Diners like Inch, Jerry, Lee, PC, and points east may need to watch out today. Our radar on this morning's weather looked like some turbulent weather rolling through mid-to-northern Illinois, so it's heading your way, folks!

Us, I doubt that we'll get any more rain today than Paul has been getting (and we know how that's been, right Paul?).Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] About 95-99 F with suitably nasty heat index...Cool [8D]

I'll be waiting in the window booth while the band tunes up in prep for JP's arrival.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

The surprising thing is the cab is not hot all the time. The only time it gets hot it when you are standing still, such as waiting at the station. When you are moving, you get a nice breeze goin' thanks to the nice open cab.

Mornin, just a coffee please Zoe. There's a heat advisory issued for here today and thunderstorms.

Partly cloudy skies with scattered rain and thunderstorms will move through today. Temperatures will be the warmest of the summer topping out near 92° this afternoon with a heat index between 100° and 110°. Scattered rain and thunderstorms will continue tonight but will exit the Wabash Valley by Wednesday morning. Wednesday will still be warm with a daytime high near 88° but it will not be as humid because of northwesterly winds.

Jerry,

The only reason I'd heard bout the school so soon is because of the grandkids going there. Registration is this week, so guess we'll hear more about then.

Matt n Tom,

There's been several threads on CORP in Trains Magazine n Train Board forums. Here's a link to one in Train Board.

http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=100439

DICK,

She's wanting one of those outside boilers, but I'm thinking a stove inside would work better for us on those days without power at 0 degrees outside for 20 hours. Worst of it is, I don't own a chain saw or a truck anymore and no place close to cut.

Jim,

We're hoping FEMA comes thru for a new building rather than just cleanup n repairs. Nothing is going to stop the take over talk; we've heard it for years.

Paul,

Was wondering if you might get some much-needed rain from Edouard.

RT,

Good luck with the doc today n hope everything comes out ok

JR,

I thought maybe you'd have most everything settled by now. But from others we've known a total loss is easier to deal with than a repair, even with total replacement insurance.

Best gets moving, kids got up at 6 and I've been since 5 trying to get this post done with lots of help. Thoughts for all in need n hope ya'll has a gooden.

in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thank you!

***R.T., sure hope everything gets sorted out soon for you. Personally, as much as I like real wood, those plastic shakes might be the way to go. Which type will last longer and require the least (if any) maintenance?

Cement truck just pulled out. Need to run talk to our concrete guys about a sidewalk before they take off.

Have a good day all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Hey, now, Ryan, I still use disposable razors (and am having some difficulty finding the ones I like)! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Well, we tried to tell you to put that grill on some wheels - easier to pull it behind the diner cars...  Nice job on the bench tools, by the way!Yeah!! [yeah]

Hot, hot, HOT day here, Cool [8D]but going to get hotter tomorrow (predicting 97 F). Sure feels bad enough as it is today around 90 F (I think their thermometer is broken). Humidity is only 52 percent though. Kinda a dry bake day, with toasting on the grill tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks Jim! Going to be a hot one here too today with an orange air quality alert.

Yeah Rob, I would need a microscope to get my eyes peeled on stuff that small, HO is quite a challenge for me! Thanks!

Tom, I enjoyed your story I think its cool the neighbor "girl" came back to visit your layout, you must have made quite the impression on her.  While reading your story I was waiting for the husband to leave and return with a brand new big boy he wanted you to have, lol.

SECURE ALL HATCHES AND GUN COVERS! Make YOKE reports to the bridge by departments.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at5.shtml?5day#contents  Well Paul and those in SE LA and most of TX I hope you fair the weather, some of you may get more rain than you possible need.

ROB, that Unitrack and  EZ-track is expensive, good luck with the new layouts.  What eras do you and the Mrs. Intend to work in on your respective layouts?  My flex-track was 90 cents/3 foot section and the cork was 35 cents/3 foot section. I'll never buy model power flex track again, it's far too ridged compared to ATLAS.

RT, good luck with the doctor appointment today, keep us up to date.

GMT, good luck with the permits, sounds like a bunch of paperwork.

OK time to get to work.

Good morning all,

As I was approaching the E 9th St exit last night in Cleveland, OH there was a Norfolk Southern train on the tracks.  Looked like F9 A-B-A and passenger cars from the 50s - maybe 10 passenger cars in a maroon color.  Impressive; the engines looked "new" but the cars needed work. I need to keep my camera in the truck!  My guess is someone filming another movie in town.  There is a small stone (abandon) passenger station (NYC) in Lakewood maybe 2 miles from E9th.  I know PIXAR has been running around town filming the Cleveland skyline & river for the last 2 months and the rail historical socity has several reconditioned heavy weights Hollywood leases from time to time. Hollywood leases them, re-paints them and then returns them.  I guess a field trip to the roundhouse is in order next month!

Today: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. South wind around 10 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Tonight: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. Northwest wind at 10 mph becoming south. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR NORTH CENTRAL OHIO...NORTHEAST OHIO...NORTHWEST OHIO AND NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA: A FRONTAL BOUNDARY WILL BE IN THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. SOME OF THE THUNDERSTORMS COULD BE SEVERE IF WE CAN GET ENOUGH SUNSHINE LATER TODAY TO DESTABILIZE THE ATMOSPHERE. THE MAIN THREAT WILL BE DAMAGING WIND AND HAIL.
