Good to see most of us didn't have any issues. My power is still out , and it's drizzling rain, not exactly the 10" they were predicting.

The "eye" went over me a couple minutes ago.

Morning all. I start school in about 30 minutes. Just enjoying it.

Anyways, while bored yesterday, I made a formula to find out what type of steam engine you'd be... It's a little complicated. Not too bad I don't think though.

Height=Length of loco (no tender) I.E. 5'7'' 50 ft, 5'8'' 55 ft, 5'9'' 60 ft, etc.

Weight multiplied by two = weight of loco in tons

Weight also means how many pilot or trailing wheels there are... 180, two sets of four. 150, one set of four and one set of two. 120, two sets of two. 90, one set of two. Less, nothing.

Foot size = Driver diameter, size 10 and 10.5= 60-64 inch diameter drivers, 12 and 12.5, 70-74, size 9, 55-59...

Now this is the interesting part. To find out how many drivers there should be, we make the driver diameter into feet (rounded) and put 1' spacing in between each, and see how many will fit.

Also, the pilot and trailing wheels take up 10 and 8 feet of the engines length, so the drivers have their own spot.

So, as an example, me:

Height: 5'7''
Weight: 150 lbs
Foot size: 14.5 (runs in the family)

That makes me a 50' engine, with a set of 4 and a set of 2 trailing/pilot wheels, and 300 tons. Now for the drivers, I'd have 80" which is close to 7', so lets try four. 7x4= 28' of length, plus 1' spacing in between the three=31'. 50-18 (for pilot and trailing)= 32'. Perfect.

I am a 4-8-2 mountain, 300 tons, with 80'' drivers.

So, this is the formula I made. Yes I was bored, any suggestions or improvements? Or go ahead and find out what type of steam loco you are!

Good morning,

Well I hope all is well with Jeff, I look forward to hearing how he faired the storm.  I heard a huge number on the radio this morning: 1.5 M customers are without power down there so it might be a while before he gets power back.

Rob, looks like you are making good progress on the deck and stuff.  How is the rest of the house coming along?

Morning all!

Looks like Gustav is pretty much over.  Now it's just the cleanup.  Hope to hear from Jeff soon, but who knows with his flaky connection provider.

Oh well, off to work!

Good Morning All,

A regular and a plate of the scrambled eggs with sausage and home fries would be great. Thanks for the buffett Bill.

Gustav was less wild than feared, but it still packed quite a whallop. Hope Jeff and his folks made it through ok with no damage. Looks like we have a conga line of storms brewing one after the other.

Packers - my prayers for the family of your friend. It's tough to lose a friend so young.

Rob - nice progress on the deck and walkway.

Lime Rock went well enough but we lost the gearbox on my old Lotus 18 when one of the ring gear bolts sheared and went through the case. We'll need to build up a whole new box. Weather was nice and today we unload/reload to leave for Watkins Glen, N.Y.

Speaking of storms CPTV had a documentary about the Conn floods of 1955. We had lots of rain where I was at the time, but I had no idea of the ferocity of the flooding (whole factories washed away along with many houses along the Naugatuck River) and cities and towns from Thomaston to Ansonia were devastated. Danbury too had major flooding with the center of town ending up under three feet of water, but the major damage was to the north and east.

Well, breakfast is done, time to get on with it.     See y'all later.   J.R.

Good evening gents, just about finished painting the fron of the house and half of the south side. These are the two toughest sides to do. The weather has been ideal to paint, and we may get hit by the rains of Hannah, or even the 3rd Hurricane that has now formed out in the Atlantic, so I want this done NOW, or I may not get a chance later this year.

Jeff is at his parent's house, much safer than the trailer. But they have lost power I am sure, and certainly the internet is OUT.

FERGIE: We haven't heard from you, so I must assume that their is no satellite internet service where your ship is located. I will have to check the tracking of the Hudson to see where you are.

Well, I am off to bed, got to get the rest of the house painted tomorrow.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Jeffs connection is not the greatest to begin with.  Rain often knocks it out.  Suddenlink is his DSL provider (Wi-Fi is too costly) and they don't have very good facilities in his area.  It wouldn't surprise me if he's down for a while.

Evening Gang:

Packers I think that Ol' Al is back. I think that others have hit the abuse button on him. Me I just try and ignore him.

I got another 50ft or so of the UP right of way cleaned up. That's on the south side only. That took about 3 hours. I need to go to Ellis tomorrow and pick up a couple of saw chains for the pole pruner and drop off the dull ones for sharpening. The pole pruner works very well for cutting brush since I don't have to bend over and crawl through the under brush. Of course cutting so close to the ground causes the thing to hit the dirt and rocks sometimes. That really dulls the chain fast.

Rob I didn't think an excuse was needed to buy another new loco except " I want it."

I see that Lothar has found a job. I'm very happy for him. It's rock hard being out of work for so long.

We got moved back into our bed room tonight. Now I have to find the remote for the dvd player. They do this to me every time they stay with us. Now that the kids are so close ( just 2 miles away instead of 600 ) they won't be staying over night when they visit and I won't have to drive 600 miles to see the grand kids.

Well I'm going to take daisy the dog for her evening walk.

Jeff you take care and my best to everyone.

***Jim, I don't really know how big an engine house I'll need. Sure won't need to be nearly as big as before I sold off all those vintage locos over the past couple or so years. No regrets though, as all the upgraded locos I have now are good runners. Oh, could be one exception, might have kept one old Lima 2-6-4, just for the heck of it. If I still have it, that one can live on a non-powered siding. Truth is, I think one roundhouse with perhaps 3 stalls and 1 two-bay engine shop should take care of what I have. Would rather have most of them out where I can see them anyway.

Thanks for the comment on the deck & ramp. Thought it came out alright. Still lots more of it to build, but now that the wife is happy, I can take my time with the rest of it.Wink [;)]

Afternoon/evening, Diners - Chloe, were those storm shutters you had added alongside the side windows? Oh, you just pivot them around and lock 'em down huh? I sure hope that Gustav doesn't make it this far inland! (Nah...)

Oh yeah, I'll have a root beer float and some turtle soup, if Ryan made any yesterday. You do? Great! Thanks.

TJ, nice photos from the CSX yard! (glad I'm not on dial-up...) We have some other CSX fans in the Diner, so you have company. Thumbs Up [tup] That caboose did really get tagged. The RR might just take you up on doing the re-lettering of it!

PC, welcome back from vacation - now all you have to do is get rested up from vacation, right? Zzz [zzz]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] That boat doesn't look too 'spartan' to me - looks pretty nice. Sure pays to have good relations with the relatives, doesn't it? Yeah!! [yeah]

Sawyer, remember to get rested up sufficiently, with those practices and all taking your energy out of you.

Colby, nice night shots there! Thumbs Up [tup]

Paul, must not have been as busy of a day (tiring) for you, with that grapple helping some. Rest easy tonight. Zzz [zzz]

Garry, hope your 4-year-old heals up quickly - did she need any medical attention, or was it just bad enough to scare her from reaching near a stove again for a long while? Hopefully it'll heal up and just be a less painful lesson than some she could've had. Whew!

Jeff, I was watching the weather channel today when I was at our singles lunch/dinner party, and it looked like Gustav might not have been as bad as they were expecting, but still was packing a punch. Head for the bunker, friend! Maybe you can take the lantern and some MR issues with you.Wink [;)]

Dick, good to hear you're that far inland - being where you are, it'd take one doozy of a storm to give you much more than lots-o'-rain (and possible flooding). I'm guessing your weather problems are usually more along the lines of wintertime.

Our weather was hot today (it was still 89 F with 57 percent humidity currently. Our local weatherguessers this morning were saying to expect higher humidty, with possible rains on Thursday/Friday.

Rob, you might want to be careful later in the week, if the models for Hannah turn out correct - they're saying by next Friday she may hit the SC coast and head up toward Indiana and Ohio by Saturday. But by the time Hannah reaches PC's neck o' the woods, the winds will be long gone (less than 40 mph).

Oh, Rob? I never knew that an excuse was needed when buying a Santa Fe Bluebonnet! Laugh [(-D] Congratulations on your new acquisition. So how big will your enginehouse need to be, now? Wink [;)] And nice work on your deck leading to the sidewalk - that'll come in handy when you need to wheel the handtruck in with all your LHS purchases in a few months, huh?Whistling [:-^]

Our attendance was a bit light for the singles Labor Day lunch thing - all guys, too. So I ended up taking home some burgers and buns with me (besides the rest of my jello-n-peaches). We watched "For Richer or Poorer" (Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley) - funny! - and I played three games of pool and a few rounds of  darts (lost all the pool games, sort of won at the darts, though we didn't keep score on that).

Didn't get quite as much done on MRR'ing done this weekend as hoped - but got more than I've done the past several weekends. I'm planning on clearing the dining room table when I get back home from the Diner this evening. There are a couple of loose handrails on a diesel or two that I could glue back in place, too.

Prayers for safety, power-back-on-soon, healing, comfort and a good night's rest for all you Diners and families.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Strong up of coffee, please & thanks.

Shouldn't have played on ebay the other night. Picked up a second Intermountain Santa Fe Bluebonnet F7, so my first one wouldn't get lonely. I know, pretty lame reason. Whistling [:-^]

Made a new shoe for Tinytoons (mini dwarf horse) and with the wife's help, got her hoof cleaned up and the new shoe glued on. Perfect fit.

The Inlaws were out today to view the house progress. Wife got a little teary-eyed helping her dad walk around, but hid it from him well. I know it's tough on her to see him like this. Anyway, all went well.

Trying to rest up today (if that is possible) so I can get back to work on the deck tomorrow.

Healing thoughts to those in need. Crossing my fingers for Jeffrey's home & trains, too.

I don't think so but then again they did stand up against the winter had up here. they will keep you out of the wind and rain but wind above 110 you might want to find better housing.

Jeff, you batten down the hatches good, OK?

Well, as promised, here's a couple of pics of our accomodations for the last week.  My wifes Aunt and Uncle own it (we all get along real good).  It's pretty nice, and it comes with two jet ski's like the one pictured, and a fishing boat also.  (Click to enlarge any of these pics)

And lest you think the inside is rather sparten, here's the living room (Yes, thats the wife) and kitchen (all looking quite "lived" in).

Truely, a great time was had by all!

Colfax, Oakdale and DeRidder are getting hit by the leading edge now. We're next. The wind has really come up quite a bit and the sky is getting really ugly.
