In a book on the Wabash RR, I found a photo of a yard engine with a 2-4-0 (or maybe 4-2-0, I don't recall offhand) wheelbase and an 8-wheel slopeback tender that looks centipede-y. It was the most unusual thing I ever saw, and could be used by any freelance layout set from 1880 to WW1.

I second the idea of an N-scale SW1500.

Something like a GP39 or a GP16 (or other first gen rebuilt engine) can be modified with a few steps from available models, but it would be very difficult to kitbash a believable SW1500/1000 out of available models.

How about.....

A decent looking 'generic' 4-8-4 steam loco in HO.

Afterall they were the apotheosis of steam, were all purpose (passenger & frieght) (if the drivers weren't oversized & didn't slip) and would be a 'slam-dunk' to market and model. Do one the way Alco would have and do one the way Baldwin would have (Go see the Franklin Museum in Philly for the latter). Generic.

Fiddling with just the pilots or face plates and painting different roads would get you an enormous variety.

After getting back into this hobby after 20 or 30 yrs while I spent my career professionally modeling architecture, I find numerous Challengers or Big Boys and small engines while none of the really straight ahead superpower stuff (Like the 4-8-4's) that show-cased most road's 'big trains' at the end of steam is in evidence...at least not generically. (No...the 4-8-2's are Pennsy and over doing one or 2 roads like the NYC, UP, AT&SF, N&W misses the point).

What gives?

I can't believe it's 2004 and it seems most manufacturer's have missed this one....think of the possiblities with DCC, sound and the engine's normally larger size...awesome!

Not talking rivet counting here....just some good old fashioned FUN!

From the american market, a decent long productin SD40-2 in N-scale. i'm sick of having to try and track down KATO units.

ps i live in OZ, so KATO units can get hard to find after about six months.

I would like to see a nice GP8/10/11 Paducah rebuild kit in HO[:D].
There are so many railroads that have or are currently roster these units I am surprised that they have not been done sooner. Models of rarer units have been produced by the thousands.
(I recall a local hobby shop with 20 unsold BL2's on sale real cheap....)

Your surprise engine would be great of course, but it is available in new and used brass models. Some of the early Keys models are really good runners and can be purchased for a very reasonable sum.

I model both the SF and UP and would like to see CSA Challengers.
I hope you get your wish along with many others on this Topic.

This may surprise some who know me as a Santa Fe modeler, but I want the Union Pacific CSA-class early Challengers, in HO scale. In the year I model, 1947, these were still the most common power on UP freight trains over Cajon Pass, and they drew some passenger assignments too, mostly on the "Pony Express."

I"ll say it again, a Union Pacific SD-90 MAC-H, it has been done in brass, and imported by OMI, but never in plastic, however Kato did a superb job on the SD-90/43 MAC, Now we need it"s big brother, the biggest of the big, the EMD SD-90 MAC-H. I"d like at least a couple in UP livery, and a couple more in CP red.

Lionel is going to make a turbine (way own of your price range). Bowser makes a Arrow train. IHC make a 1900-1920 4-4-0. Hope this helps.

lionel already came out with the turbine. Its got a full QSI sound system. the kids love to look at, listen to it when i run it on my modular layout

Conway Scenic RR's number 7470, 0-6-0. The yard switcher, previously owned by CN, and built in 1921 in Montreal, is used in the summer daily to treat tourist and RR fans to a nice trip through the White Mountain Valley of NH. And, over the last several years, on Railfans weekend in October, this baby has pulled fans up the 600+ foot climb through Crawford Notch!! Now that is worth a build for keepsake.
