Hi gang.

Sorry that the old diner got shut down. Oh well. Like the old saying goes, a fresh start sometimes does a person good...

Well. We laid poor old uncle Jodie to rest today. He was "the world's greatest sports fan" if there ever was one!. He liked football, baseball, basketball, etc. If it had anything to do with sports he was into it. He was also a people person, and was always willing to help someone that was down on their luck. The problem was he also liked his beer and cigarettes a little too much which is what ended his life.

Not much going on lately on the old layout. I did however break down and buy a new SF 2-8-0 and a couple of other items recently. Right now I'm more into adding to my WWII German soldier action figure collection. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a neo-nazi or anything like that, I just think they're cool looking with all of their gear and stuff. My most prized is one that I bashed from various sets to create a really cool looking officer. He's wearing a long leather coat and peak hat, has a brown leather belt and holster with a Walther PPK pistol, has a knights cross around his neck and also a pair of binoculars. He even has mud on his boots. They're all kept in display boxes on my bookcase to keep the dust off of them. Someone accused me one time of glorifying the Germans, but like I told them, not anymore so than Hollywood does when they show them in a movie reenacting historical events...

Hope everyone has a really nice Thanksgiving.

A web search on gangrene makes me more nervous for Jeff; turns out diabetes is a risk factor.  He has enough trouble getting around; if he has to lose his foot that'll be aweful.  Here's hoping/praying that it's not as bad as all that.

***Tracklayer, do you have any of your soldiers in an online gallery? Although once into them myself, I figured out I couldn't afford more than one hobby, so I chose model RRing. All I have left now are a handfull of Zulu warriors I hand painted long ago. They reside on our African shelf in the library.

***Dave, after reading Jeffrey's post about the condition of his foot, I have been biting my tongue. Most of what my wife has seen in the hospital associated with diabetes is generally most dreadful. When it gets bad, she has said it takes you "one limb at a time". I too am worried about Jeffrey's condition.

You are correct.  I've transported too many folks that have started with a toe, then foot, etc. amputated. Then the other leg goes. This is one hellova job I have.

I hope all of you have a Thankful Thanksgiving.

Prayers for all and warm regards,

Flip

No Rob, no gallery photos. Sorry. I just buy them when the spirit moves me. Several years ago when I saw Saving Private Ryan, the ugly things I saw the Germans do caused me to lock them away in storage for a while. I recently re-discovered them and got back into collecting them again.

Evening Gang: The first part of the fencing job is done. A 4 hour job took 2 days. Tomorrow we're going over to John's inlaws for diner. Altho Ryan's offer sounds good.

I too am getting worried about Jeff. Problems with the feet are common with diabetics. The doctor checks mine regularly. Prayers are going out for him.

Well I guess I'll call it an early night.

Hello everybody....

Tracklayer... i'm teribly sorry to learn of the loss of your Uncle Jodie. You mentioned beer and cigarettes, and I'll agree addictions can do terrible things. I say it's not that cigarettes kill you that's bad, it's HOW they killl you. Anybody whose ever watched people dying of lung disease know what I mean.

Mark ... Daylight is a popular scheme, and you should have no trouble finding. However, Ryan will tell you I also suggest people watch their budgets. (Ryan razzed me a bit about that)

Flashwave .... I would also think the bi-level was in a tri-level box. Your model looks terrific and so does the passenger car for the circus train. Looking forward to seeing future progress.

Jeff, evidently, was correct when he explained his problem yesterday morning. He said it may be a serious situation. Praying for Jeff.

There were some wild turkeys on our road this morning.  i suspect they escaped any turkey hunters.

As I said I'll be traveling tomorrow thru Sunday. I may not get onto the forum. I'll be worried about Jeff.

Best wishes for Thanksgiving everyone.

The prob with Daylight is, that it is so popular that it's nabbed up in a hurry. Took me forever to finish the Athearn Streamlined. My consists include an Athearn PA, 2 PB dummies, an E7(???) the IHC streamline, Athearn Streamline, Spectrum Heavy, Athearn Heavy [(RPO Coach Observation) Athearn Breakdown, and some Pulpwood cars in repaint to go with it, to form the Relief Train] GS4 DCC 4449, 4446 DC And I have an auxillary tender in order and a Dome Obs from Con Cor at the hobby shop. We think it;s ours we ordered, but there's no name, and it came with a broken coupler, so we're gonna wait for Zac to do his thing.

*Can't wait for the Gen set*

Thanks fpr the comments on the Ringling. I'll try to get decal page tommorrow or friday.

Oh, and my Av is the daylight insignea, I can't figure out where the black background came from all of a sudden.

Quick question for you HO folks: When I see model vehicles that say 1/72 scale, will these look very out of place next to regular HO scale autos? Looking for Christmas presents for the wife.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Rob

Rob,

1/72 is close and they don't look too bad, but Wal-mart and Kmart sell die cast 1/87 scale (HO) cars, campers, construction vehicles in their toy department.  I'm modeling the transition period and I've picked up some very cool stuff from 99 cents to $3.  Modern vehicles are more common.

***Lee, thank you much for the tip. Online stuff seems quite a bit more expensive than that. I'll definitely check that out next time I head into a big town. Wife likes 50's stuff or earlier (like me) but she still wants a Life Flight helo in her layout somewhere.Laugh [(-D]

Rob, if you watch the die cast metal vehicle aisle (usually among the toy sections), Wally World also has transition era vehicles, too. Usually they're even labelled as to year of the car/truck, so you can tell if it's out of your (wife's) era, too.  I've picked up VW Beetles (original model), VW van, 55 & 57 Chevys, Kharman Ghias, Corvettes, and (I think it's the right year for transition) a Porsche convertible(!) - for her RR CEO to drive? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] All the ones I have bought have been between $1 & 2.00 - quite affordable!

Think some more praying is in order for Jeff. Angel [angel] Angel [angel] Angel [angel] Still no word on him, huh?

Prayers for healing and comfort and for all those in need.

Blessings on your rest tonight,

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!

The HO and N scale vehicle market is very inflated.  Last train show they had tables full of die cast vehicles for $12 each.  I'm on a budget so I'll stalk the toy isles in the stores for a while.

Anybody have a recommendation on a HO scale church?  Need something pre 1950's style that would fit into a downtown section, so block construction, maybe a little gothic, and under $50.

Well I hope Jeffery is doing well, him not online is kind of like the sun not rising or the earth not rotating properly.

Best wishes and prayers to those in the diner with ill loved ones and those of you that have the flu.  I hope everyone can spend some quality time with loved ones or those in need.

Mornin, coffee and a short stack please Zoe

Cloudy with a cold north wind, temp is 34 now, might get close to 40, still got a chance of a shower or snow flurries. Sure is different that the last couple days, we were outside without coats working.

You guys sure have been a talking bunch this week, but anyway, A Great Thanksgiving day to ya'll,  Even with all the seemingly important problems today, we still have more than enough to be thankful for, and hope ya don't eat yourself into a turkey coma. We're going to my MIL's today and having ours here tomorrow.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JERRY even if it is late, hope ya had a gooden.

ROD,, sorry to hear of your FIL, but it's good he's recovering now.

PC,, good to hear your wife's improving also

Still no word on JEFF I see and David hasn't checked in either. Starting to get a might concerned.

BOB K,,, glad your back, I was kinda wondering bout how you were doing. Looks like you've got plenty of scenery to keep ya busy a day or two at the club. Thanks for the pics too.

RYAN,,,I'd hope that big turkey n ham would feed this bunch, but the kids have cleaned up more and there was teeth marks on the bones.

GARRY,, there was a circus train wreck that killed an elephant, I don't remember where or when, and I did get your pun. A guy down the road got his wild thanksgiving turkey with his car. Insurance company wasn't to happy, 1,100 dollars damage.

JOHNBOY,,, some I did on my drawer is , the bottom is still loose, so I can raise it up and lean it back to work on it. I'm not good at working over my head anymore

COREY,, I as cheap as it comes to modeling. I pick up old buildings at yard sales or flea markets or Ebay to play with. Even if they're broke you've got some scratch building material to fool with.

JIM CG,,, hope your still improving too and the colds better. We're doing turkey day here. I think Mother figured bout 25 bodies coming. I'm glad all the kids don't live close at times, that'd be another 11.

TRACKLAYER,,, sorry to hear of your uncles passing sounds like an alright feller. I had a friend of mine that collected those metal cast solders and scale military equipment. Some of them were worth a bunch of money.

THANKS to all you who posted pics, I enjoyed them all.

Best get moving n help Mother round the house [she's baking pumpkin pies and she just handed me the dust rag]. Hope ya'll has a gooden n stay safe

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!!!

I to agree it does not sound good for Jeffs foot. What he described really was not good, and having had an open wound for as long as he has it really is not good. My prays are with him.

Dave Model Railroad Craftsmen had a two step article on kitbashinga PRR  2-10-0 in N Scale interesting reading I have Ho but still a real interesting article.

PC glad to hear your wife is doing well.

Tracklayer sorry to hear of your loss.

Rob glad to hear your wife discovered the med issue, I had the flu and did not catch up on the diner until last night so you all ready discovered the issue. My mother is 83 and has an brain anurism that is repaired and the same thing happened to her.

I agree with the steam treatment descibed by someone. I usuall go up on the fourdrinier of the papermachine to clear my head when I have a cold.

Happy Thanksgiving all my little girl is ready to go get a copy of Homeward Bound so she is tugging on my hand.

Whistling [:-^]

Good Morning ya all,

I want to wish all of you good folk south of the 49th a very happy and safe Thanksgiving Day and week-end.

Today feels like a western omelette day, Chloe and I'll wash it down with OJ.  On my way to work this morning it was -18.  A tad chilly around the edges.....................

I feel so thankful for all our technology today as we all have developed friends that we never would have encountered in the past without it.

Speaking of friends, my sincere prayers and thoughts are with Jeffery, I wish we would hear some good news, and soon.  My wife and my late Father-in-Law both have that same ailment and if not constantly being on guard can cause some very difficult results.

Thanks for the good hints "Inch" After dropping a few leads last night I got looking at those drawers and I think that might be my answer for my control area. Going to give that more serious thought.

Also I cannot forget those who are serving our countries in the turmoils around the world and for their families and loved ones who are patiently awaiting their return. My family's thoughts, prayers, wishes and desires are with you all.  Thankyou from the bottom of our hearts for your great sacrifices of time, energy, skill, devotion and in far too many cases the ultimate, Bring them home soon, is our wish.. And Happy Thanksgiving where ever you are.

All for now,  Johnboy out...................

Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Today's the day when I start on Christmas decorations while the wife is preparing dinner.  This year my boys are both old enough that I can set up our Lionel train around the tree.  So, the tree is up (with just lights; haven't decorated it yet) with a FastTracks elongated loop (gotta make room for presents!) and the classic Lionel generic 4-4-2 pulling clasic cars (like the Area 51 Alien Car) in a noisy loop.

I love tradition.

My olderst boy was baptized near Christmas of 2002, so his Godparents send him a new Lionel car every year.

It's crazy warm here today (temps in the low 70s), but we expect a cold front tonight, ushering in highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s!

Here's hoping all is well with Jeff; I can't help but feel a little gloomy on the prospects, though, just based on his description of his problem.  I'm no doctor, but I've had basic military first aid... and it sure sounds like gangrene.  I hope I'm all wrong!

***Dave, love that smell of ozone in the air. What memories I have of my eldest brothers Lionel 4-6-4, smoke belching, whistle blowing, noise making loco pulling all those animated cars (like the cop chasing the hobo around stacked boxes, the box cars with characters popping out of doors, the spot light car, and the list goes on and on). Have any pics you can post of yours? That same brother now has Z scale under his bed and is unfortunately in poor health these days. I know he misses his HO & O scale trains, but has no room for them now.

Afternoon folks-Happy Thanksgiving!

Dawn got off work early so we'll be able to head off to the relatives & make dinner on time after all. (which we'll be doing in a little while.)

Dave, you're definitely gonna get a cool down-& some gusty winds as well. Temp here is 42.1 as I write this. Woke up this morning to see the trash can across the street, & a large dead tree branch down in the yard. Oh well, 1 less to cut down next spring Big Smile [:D]

Most have grown up with a Lionel around the tree, yet my experience has been almost all HO-my grandfather had a Mantua 0-4-0 saddletanker & a few cars, which was the 1 train around the tree I knew best. (my 1st train was a Marx wind-up HO scale believe it or not) I also had one of those Life-Like/Tyco something Penn Central C-415s. Never ran it around the tree (that honor went to my Tyco ATSF F-9) but the C-415 as I recall sputtered, stalled, never ran worth a crap, but that ozone scent it gave off-ah, memories! Tongue [:P]

Wishing the best for Jeff also-maybe we'll get some news soon (& hopefully good!)

***Mitch, your mention of a wind-up triggered a forgotten memory from the obscure recesses of my noggin. My "first" train was some kind of stamped metal wind-up toy, but it didn't run on a track. You wound it up and set it on a floor where it ran every which-way.It was green with some silly painted details and seemed (to me as a small child) fairly large, that's all I remember.

Wish we would hear something/anything from Jeffrey.

refill, please & thanks!

Another Quick HO question: Is there any difference between Bachmann EZtrack found in cheap train sets and the Bachmann EZtrack sold in small packs? Seems like I could probably buy a set, keep the track (for wife's layout), sell off the cheaper trains, and end up paying much less for the track (IF it is the SAME track)??? Thanks for any info.

I had the unfortunate joy today to run into Kmart to pick up a couple last minute things.  Took me over an hour to get through the checkout line, but I managed to find a few older John Deer HO-Scale tractors and a few automobiles.  The tractors were $5 for 2 tractors and the cars were $1.50 each.

Thanks,  last mountain & eastern hogger, I don't think too many people think of us military guys on the holidays.  I think I'm up to rotate through the big sand box in 2008, we shall see.....

happy Turkey day to all....

Happy Thanksgiving Evening! Janie, how about a cup of coffee - I'm already like most turkeys were today - STUFFED! Zzz [zzz] Oh, sorry 'bout that, Janie - I do that when I eat almost my body weight in one sitting...Wink [;)] Yeah, maybe leave me a pot at the booth, too. Thank you, ma'am!

Lee, on the church you were asking about, the masonry walls may be the hard part (especially for the earlier 20th century). Most of the church kits out there are siding-covered style, and it's likely that in the pre-1950's era, most churches built of masonry would be the larger ones, in Eastern cities. I would expect that other/smaller town churches wouldn't have the $$ for masonry (brick, let alone for stone). Only stone or brick-looking church that a quick search on Walthers' site turned up was a European-looking one, which would require some good modification to Americanize it.

There are a few good frame church kits, if you'd be willing to go with that. Walthers has one (*not* the LifeLike one, though) their Gold Line Cottage Grove church, that looks pretty good. (it's less than $25 and is on sale below that now). Kibri has one that is brick, but is about $69 (!). The one I mentioned earlier (Heljan, I looked it up) is out of stock now (it was $14 or so). Main Street Heritage as a unique (and nice) First Community Church (kit #110) which is frame style, and Valley Model Trains has it in stock for a bit over $55. VMT's Pat Hennebery is a good guy to work with. I've ordered a few things through him over the past year plus, and have had great service and delivery from him. (I'm not employed by him nor getting any compensation for that...Wink [;)]Thumbs Up [tup]) Campbell's church was a nice one, but is out of stock at Walthers (you could try looking on that e-auction site, I suppose...). Branchline makes a fairly nice one, but it's over $65. Or if you feel adventurous, you could get some photos of a church like you like, draw up your own plans, and build it from scratch. That's sort of what I'll be doing - I like the Main Street Heritage one, but want to do it in plastic rather than wood, since I have more practice with plastic.

Inch, I can tell the antibiotic and decongestant are helping - the coughing isn't as rough (and I'm getting more of it out), and I am getting to sleep more easily. Still have some stuffiness in my right ear, but I can hear out of it much better now. Sounds like you and Debbie had a passle of the kinfolk there, even without the out-of-town relatives!

Inch, did you or Jerry get any snow up there yet? They were saying that we might get a smidgen of snowflakes last night, but no accumulation. I didn't see any sign of it, I know. I was thinking from the forecast last night that Lee & PC might be getting some snow from off the lakes. What about it, Lee or PC - any white stuff over there yet? We're at 36 F currently (and dropping to supposedly a low of 28 F tonight). Definitely feels more like winter (well, like spring to our neighbours in Nova Scotia...Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Dave, that was in the November 2007 RMC issue - they used a Kato 2-8-2 as the starting point, and also used a GHQ L1 conversion kit, Minitrix and ConCor parts. Pages 70-80 in the RMC issue.

Ah, tradition - Area 51 car, huh? Whistling [:-^] Whistling [:-^]Laugh [(-D] I still will be holding off until Sunday to put my tree and other decorations up (though I have the boxes of Christmas decorating stuff in from the storage shed). I'm on-call Saturday for 24 hrs. straight.

Lee, I'll cover the tab for this page - hadn't realized you were still in the active service. And while I'm doing the dishes to cover my bill, I'll get more humidity, which (as the others said) should help my congestion clear up, right? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Got a work area cleared off on the dining room table today, so I could get back to some MRR work tonight. Yeah!! [yeah]

I was going to make baked chicken breasts with (cream of) mushroom sauce topping for dinner tonight, but discovered I didn't have the cream of mushroom soup.Oops [oops] So I went with plan B - seasoned the chicken, covered it with pasta sauce (with mushrooms), and topped them with some grated cheddar/Monterey Jack cheese mix once they were done. Also fixed a salad and some pineapple rings to go with that. Dinner [dinner] Yum! I even have one other left to reheat later in the weekend for dinner or a lunch.

I'll be at the corner booth with my coffee, waiting for enough dishes to accumulate and for me to do a load. Let me know once you have enough in the back, Janie! Thanks.

I'm with the rest of you - sure would like to hear some news that Jeffrey has been back but sleeping because of some strong antibiotic or medication they put hi

Happy Thanksgiving guys!

Finally I'm able to get online at home!!

My comp is finally going fast enough to making it worth the time to go online. We had 10 over including my dad, mom, little brother and me. Right now I'm coming up with my december wish list. It's a good one.

BTW WE FINALLY GOT A DICENT SNOW FALL. it wasn't much but it was enough to cover the ground with a half a inch of snow.

Evening Gang: I worked on fences again this morning. I got one big hole fixed before we had to head over to dinner. About 3pm it started to snow and is still snowing. The grass is covered but the bare ground and gravel is still too warm for it to stick. The weather guessers are saying percipitation through the week end.

I'm really getting worried about Jeff. Has anyone tried to contact David?

It's kind of early but I am going to head on out. I'll check back later or early tomorrow.

Good Night All
