CAPE JIM,   Both CN and CP up here and I would imagine most of the American roads did the same, They placed (Hoarding also called Dunage )  over the doors on the inside of the boxcar. This was made by placing planking horizontally across the door. They would start at the bottom and build pretty well to the top on one side and would leave enough space at the top on the other door so that the guy doing the "hoarding" could get out. But before he came out he would then place cardboard that came in rolls over the hoarding to stop as much leaking of grain as possible.  The boards that they used were rougher boards (not planed lumber) in alot of cases and they would have been anywhere in the 2x4 to 2x10 in size, and not necessarily all of one size.

So if you were to model this, which is a great idea, the door of the boxcar would be open and you would use scale type basswood across the door (done from the inside) The shoot or spout from the elevator would then be placed into the (Manway) or the space that the "hoarder" had escaped from.

CN used boxcars (40 ft) done this way long after everyone else had gone to covered hoppers, along with light aluminum hoppers to haul grain to the sea port at Churchill Manitoba, on Hudson's Bay, because they were much lighter and the rail up there is light and it runs across a lot of muskeg. (frozen mushy swamp type area). These boxes ran up there into the mid 90s. Maybe CN Charlie could update us more on the exact timeframe.

Sure hope this sheds some light on this subject for you.

***Dick, obviously keep doing what you have been doing. I have often heard Salmon (wild caught) touted as a super food and I usually have it once every week or two. I really should have it more often. It is by far my favorite fish and I especially like the way Longhorns fixes it. I make a pretty decent baked salmon myself which costs less, but there is something to be said for having someone else fix it and not having any dishes to do afterwards. Big Smile [:D]

Happened again: Just brought in Miss BeDowntown (Palomino Paint mare), showing the same colic symptoms as was Cold Mountain yesterday. Was
beginning to worry I would not be able to get her to stand up out in the
middle pasture, but Twister (another mare) came and gave me a little help. Took a
while to walk her through the gates and into the barn. Noteworthy is
how much she drank once in the stall. Although in a different
pasture than Cold Mountain was in, they did eat from the same bale, so
I am still thinking it was something in the hay. If the trickle in the
creek was bad, then all the horses would be sick, right!?! Anyway, will
keep an eye on her throught the evening, plenty of water & no hay until
I see several piles of road apples. Haven't had real critter trouble in
a good while, so I'm surprised it has been two of our best mares and
not the old ones. Confused [%-)]

ROB: Salmon was the only thing in my diet that changed significantly. I cut down on meats somewhat, but we never ate that much on average a week, mostly chicken, fish and lean hamburg ( meatloaf, meat balls and hamburgers ) I probably have Salmon in one form or another on average, two times a week, sometimes three. This summer I drank a lot of iced Green Tea. Same breakfast ( Cheerios and skim milk & OJ ) Lunch is usually a Lite Yogurt and low fat, low sodium Progresso Soup. Your guess is as good as mine what really did it or in what combination. I'm happy, and my Primary Doc is very happy.

refill, please & thanks. Never did get to rest after the early post. Already returned Cold Mountain (mare) back to her pasture, put out two new round bales, cleaned two stalls then added fresh shavings. All is well on the ol' farm again.

***Jerry, thanks for that! I am a bit worried for my oldest brother. He has had too many problems in recent years.

***Dick, was Salmon the only thing you changed to your Cholesterol from 230 to 164? That is a terrific drop you achieved.

***Philip, looks nice and bet it sounds great. Does your daughter already play?

***Colby, Good Luck at the swim meet.

Whistling [:-^]

Good Morning Crew,

I'm down and out with a wicked cold this morning. I can hardly breath. Went to the Doc and got an Rx, so hope it kicks in soon.

Chloe, if you would be so kind, I'll have a Large OJ, fresh from Ed. and a toasted chesse and onion and green pepper sandwich, hold the salt & pepper though.  Thanks much.

Paul, Sorry to hear about the wee one, but let me tell you, my daughter-in-law is a neo natal nurse and it is absolutly amazing what they can do now with pre-mees.  She phoned us the other night and told us she had just been put in charge of a wee one that was under one pound and no bigger that a coke can, born many weeks early but the prognosis for her was fairly upbeat and in regard to all the others she has worked with they have all had a hard road for awhile but the percentage of successes is very high.  Our prayers are with the babe and your family.

PC. Take good care of the Lady, by the sounds of it she is a keeper.  Prayers as well for the both of you and all others that find themselves in need.

It is so hard to believe that Christmas is right upon us.  This year has gone faster than any other that I have experienced. I remember my Dad saying that as he got older, so I guess i'm in that same mode now.

Jeff, You are going to have to STOP using that foot for Cat Fish bait. Give it a rest and let it heal up.  Maybe try "Noodling" rather than just hanging the foot off the bridge.

Fergie,  Whats happening??  Its been very quiet from you for awhile.  Have you fallen in love with DRY LAND or what?

Glad to hear the animals as well are fairing better. It gets pretty tough on them in this screwy weather.  Up their portions a little.

Well ,whether I feel crummy or not I had better get some late Christmas things caught up. But I will only be in about the second notch today.

Check in again when I can.   A good day to all.

Chloe, put that sandwich on Cape Jim's tab. The amount he eats here he will never know the difference.

Jim .... just keep the box car doors closed and nobody will see if the have the wood inside for holding grain/beans. Also, you might consider the Athearn grain loading box cars. They actually are 1960's cars with no roof walks, however.

Jerry..... you asked about the IC E9.  It's still awaiting repair parts.

Good morning ( almost noontime here on the east coast ) Been out clearing away another 2" of snow from last night. The weather bureau now says that we are only 1" of snow away from the alltime record for snowfall in December!!!! Talk about extremes, last December was snowless and the warmest on record. It is only 21F here at noontime, it certainly is an olde time Christmas here in New England, 28" on the ground now here in central highlands of MA.

PAUL: The prayer wheels are turning for that tiny little girl, not to fear however, she is a Christmas baby and will do just fine.

ROB: Ahhh, I see you love Longhorn Steakhouse also, and the Salmon !!!! I love that dinner also, it is just great, I love Salmon even better since it lowered my Cholesterol from 230 to 164 without pills.

FERGIE: Yes, this will be a tough one buddy for sure without dad, but he would want you to be happy and enjoy Christmas with your family.......you "know" that he is happy. If you have any doubts, go to your local bookstore, or library, and read the book, "90 minutes in Heaven".

PHILNRUNT: Yup, the Captain is a prime ingredient in many forms of liquid refreshment like eggnog. But only for OF's.

Great video of the snow plow train.....thank you for sharing with us.!!

Nope.....safe mode gives me a black screen with the XP version info acros the top and "safe Mode" in all four corners.  All prompts are unresponsive.

Oh well, have to take it in I guess.

Pc: I had the same problem this morning. I force started the Windows XP CD from CMOS and reran the setup program. That got Windows running again. All I had to add was to reinstall IE7.

Whats a "CMOS"?

All computers have a set of routines that govern how the main board works and what does what. When the computer is turned on there will be on many computers a sentence that appears breifly that says 'PRESS DEL TO ENTER SETUP'. On some computers it's F2 instead of del. The CMOS setup menu gives you many options to use, including the boot order of the drives. On the computer I'm using I simply changed the boot order so that the CD drive would start first. If nothing was in the CD drive the hard drive would be the second boot device.

OH!!!  Ok, I did that last night and set the CD-ROM drive to go first and had first my backup disc in it, and when that didn't take I tried it with the windows disc.  Nothing!  I think it may have surfed it's last virtual wave!

Let's see, looks like it's all on Garry's tab today! Waited just long enough!

Picked up our nephew in Indianapolis today, his flight (on a Northwest A319) was right on the advertised, landed within a minute of what the website said 3 hours earlier!  K.C. (aka The Boy) flew 10 hours from Honolulu to LAX, had a 3 hour layover, then another 4 hours to Indy, but the part of the trip he hates the most is the 2 hour drive from Indy to Redkey! What a mook! For the 30 minutes we visited when I wasn't driving, 25 were spent wrestling with him. I told hom Santa said he was getting a beat-down for C-mas. He's getting bigger, and I'm getting older, so next year I just might let Santa do it.

JimRC and Silverspike- You guys are absolutely right! Every time I build a roaring blaze in the middle of the frontroom floor of our trailer, I always keep a big glass of water handy, 'cause that's no time to skimp on safety!

Heartland- Sometimes I feel like two tankcars of propane is what we use every winter! But I am glad they are coming. These might be the last new cars I buy mailorder, I'm going to try to hit more trainshows and swapmeets in '08. You can sure save a buck or two at them.

Dick and Cox47- It sounds like there are more than a few of us here with a little of the Captain in them!

PaulB- You and your family will be in our thoughts, and if the baby is anything like you, I'm not worried. Sounds like surviveability is built in!

For any of you celebrating Christmas early- Fri or Sat- have a very Merry Day. I'll be back Sun night, LWATRDR, so we'll see y'all just that much closer to the big day!

***Paul, crossing fingers & toes for Diane's baby. Odds do sound promising.

My oldest brother has been in and out of hospitals for the past couple weeks, this time for what started as a bone infection in one finger. Now he is having severe pains in both feet, he believes to also be bone related. He is on antibiotics, so hopefully that will start working for him. He had to take pain meds to go teach, which noing my brother means it must hurt like he**!

On a lighter note, wife & I went to her the assisted living facility where her folks reside and took her dad to the Christmas Party. She actually got him dancing with her which put many smiles on many of the folks there. Just picture a large middle aged woman dancing with a little old man who is moving his cane at near mach speed while the rest of him barely maintains an upright position, and you can get the idea.Laugh [(-D] And what made it even funnier was the singer playing "Play That Funky Music White Boy" for them.

Oh, had to bring in a mare into the barn today after she displayed some colic symptoms. Seems OK now tonight...whew!

Well, heading to bed now. Healing thoughts to those in need.

Not much mrr'ing today. Getting ready for Christmas. It's going to be a busy period until January. We were are the neighbors for a get-together this evening. At least he's a mrr'r and there was another mrr'r there too. Food was good.

I was going to stop by this afternoon, but then was reminded we were having our meeting of everybody that works on-call, so I never got back by the Diner until now.

Lee, that's a bit of a trip - over 700? Shopping trip?  Or can you say before Christmas?

Fergie, good to hear that Lisa's Mom got some better news.

Dick, that's pretty neat to be able to get together for dinner like that. 'nuther 4 inches, huh? Colby must be digging himself out from under however much he got, I guess.

Sue, after tomorrow I'll pretty much be off work until after New Year's, too. So if you're working, how is that holding up Larry? Does he have to wait until you get done with some section before he gets to his part (MRR'ing, right?)?

PC, as you say, puzzling that the computer 'breaks itself'... Does your daughter use the computer more than the rest of the family, perhaps? Wink [;)] Good luck with getting the 'puter up and running again very soon.

You asked about grain hauling in the 1950's. Railroads had used box cars to haul grain through the 1950's. The very first covered hoppers for grain showed up in the mid-50's, but box cars were common into 1960. Covered hoppers were short airslide cars or PS-2 hoppers. Look at the "fine print" on cars you buy to see date built. I use mostly box cars for my grain elevators and my flour mill. Some of the box cars are Athearn's grain loading box cars which were common around 1960. To haul grain with a standard 40' box car, crews would place plywood or heavy cardboard in the doorways. Leaking cars were a good reason for pigeons to follow trains through the cities.

Like Garry said...Alot of Grain in the 50's was in standard 40 foot box cars...They opened the door put board across the opening on the inside leaving just enough opening at the top to get the loading pipe in and filled...I remeber seeing a whole train of this type of cars modeled it was neat...Good way to use up those old Atheran 40 foot boxes...

Garry and Jerry - I'd read about the way they would use boxcars (though I'd like to find some pics of that), and if I got some (laser-cut?) wood I might set some up that way. But for my layout (set in the Southwest), they wouldn't have enough rain for much grain, so I'm going for beans as what the elevators will be storing instead. And I'm thinking the covered hoppers would work better for shipping the beans to Texas and the Lay's Co. (to be made into bean dip? Wink [;)]). I'll use the two bay hoppers I have for cement, since I figure I'll have a gravel plant and there's lots o'sand for the sand... Whistling [:-^] Whistling [:-^] Whistling [:-^] I have about three Athearn PS 2893 covered hoppers, and that's in the right time period for my layout. But I'm wondering what other cov'd. hoppers might work, as well.

Time to get back to my sundae... Hope everyone is healing up and getting better.

Blessings and prayers,

Evening Gang: The trip to New Mexico is off. John called this morning and said that Diane had been admitted to the hospital. She was having contractions and losing fluid. The doctor decieded to take the baby. The baby was about 10 weeks premature. She weighed 3 lbs on the head. They flew the baby to Ft. Worth Cook Childrens hospital. The doctors have given her an 80% chance. Prayers would be appreaciated. Right Now I'm pooped and really ned to get to bed. The baby will be in the hospital for about 2 months. We almost lost John when he was born so we've been through this before but it's still hard. I'd like some help from Capt. Morgan but that is not an option.

For good news Clark Gardens called and my MRR stuff is in. I haven't gotten a chance to look at the Model Power all metal stuff yet. I'll give a report when I do.

Good Night All

XP Home

I'm trying to get it going in safe mode now.  It doesn't look like it wants to go.
