Afternoon folks!
Been watching Christmas movies on the tube and making Christmas candy too! We made a batch of chocolate fudge, chocolate peanut butter fudge, and pecan pralines. Getting ready to make my famous appetizer Cajun En Crute, which is Cajun smoked sausage wrapped with puff pastry dough and baked in the oven. We are going to bring the appetizer to the Louisburg Moose Lodge Christmas party tonight.
I was out of the office yesterday and running around taking care of my Elf duties and now all the presents are done! But, I'll be back in the office on Wednesday, boo hoo!

Philip - Well, from what you describe it sounds like a good ole rebuild of the operating system might be in store. But from your reply to Jeff if you tried to boot to the Windows CD and it did not take are you sure that the Windows CD is a fully bootable operating system CD? Sometimes operating system CD's that come with a PC are not fully bootable, but are only for reference. Do you have a diagnostic CD disk? These come with some brands of PC's and are bootable, they can be run to test all the hardware (HW) components and then give a report or reports on what is broken from a HW standpoint. What is the make and model?
Nice acoustic electric you got there for the daughter!

Dick - Hey, if the HD jar ever does go to HD, I'm not going to turn my duties to Hi def now! Got to keep them low key...
Paul - Sorry to hear about Diane and the trip to NM, prayers for her and the baby too! You are so right, some things even Capt. Morgan can't fix.
Philnrunt - Glad to hear that you are keeping safety at the forefront when stoking the indoor fire!
Garry - That IC Praline Toast sounds good, I'll have to pull out my copy of the Dinner in the Diner book and check it out! I love those old recipes that the railroads used in their diner cars.
Jim - I have not done any of the modifications you mentioned with respect to boxcars for grain.
Johnboy - Hope you feel better soon!
Mitch - I'll send you a PM on how to make links active in the MR forum.
Ed - 90° in paradise huh! Sounds like year-round summer time down there! Well, you are closer to the equator I guess. What is the lowest temperature you get?
Hey Jonathan, sorry to hear about the Saab and all the troubles! But sounds like your luck has turned with winning that $10.00...

Wait until you see the 2 new ships they are building. Each will carry over 20,000 containers (TEU). There are only 2 US ports that will handle these monsters. One will run from China to the US and the other will run from Europe to the US. They are so large they build a section in dry dock, then float it out to the pier then build the next section. They plan on using tugs to hold the sections together while they are welded.

Ok, here is the official stats on that container ship I was mentioning. The first info I had appears to be a little off, so this should correct that.
Emma Mærsk
Emma Mærsk is a container ship owned by the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. When she was launched, Emma Mærsk became the largest container ship ever built, and as of 2007 the longest ship in use.[1] Officially, Emma Mærsk is able to carry around 11,000 TEU in the calculation of the Mærsk company[2] which is about 1,400 more containers than any other ship is capable of carrying.[3]
Contents
[edit] Capacity
In normal calculation, her cargo capacity is much bigger - between 13,500[4] and 14,500 TEU.[5] The difference between the official and estimated number results from the fact that Mærsk calculates the cargo capacity of a container ship by using the number of containers with a weight of 14 tons that can be carried on a vessel. For the Emma Mærsk, this is 11,000 containers.[6] Other companies calculate the cargo capacity of a ship according to the maximum number of containers that can be put on the ship, independent of the weight of the containers. This number is always greater than the number calculated by the Mærsk company.
[edit] History
The ship was built at the Lindø Yard in Denmark. In June 2006, during construction, welding works caused a fire within her superstructure. It spread rapidly through the accommodation and bridge.
She was named in a ceremony on August 12, 2006. The ship is named after Emma Mærsk, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller's late wife. She set sail on her maiden voyage on 8 September 2006 at 02:00 hours from Aarhus, calling at Gothenburg, Bremerhaven, Rotterdam, Algeciras, the Suez Canal, and arrived in Singapore on 1 October 2006 at 20:05 hours.
Emma Mærsk departed Singapore the next day, headed for Yantian in Shenzhen. She sailed on to Kobe, Nagoya, arrived at Yokohama on 10 October 2006, and returned via Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Tanjung Pelepas, the Suez Canal, Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Gothenburg and finally to Aarhus, with arrival at that port 11 November 2006 at 16:00 hours.[7]
She hit the headlines in the run-up to Christmas 2006, when she was dubbed SS Santa because she was bound for the United Kingdom from China loaded with Christmas goods. The return journey after Christmas 2006 saw her return to southern China, this time loaded with thousands of tonnes of UK waste exported for recycling to China.

I have an "around the room" layout, and yes I have passenger trains. The big one is the B&O capitol limited with the heavy weight Pullmans. Hence the large curves on my mainline.
The pictures of the cement plants didn't turn out. I'll try again right after Christmas.
I had planned for a small port on the layout, but with the addition of a 620' freighter I'll need to expand it to two 3' sections. The Toledo train show hosted a club layout with 2 different coal docks and their freighter was on a small table with wheels to push the freighter between "ports". I think I'll just have enough dock space for one freighter at a time with the other on the wall nearby, lol.

For those of you discussing container ships take a look at these stats. on this mega-ship.
I couldn't get the photos to load so google her name and you should be able to see her.
In each individual cross row (from side to side) there is over 100 containers on deck. Look at the total that she holds. This is just hard to imagine.
A Chocolate donut to the first one of you who model her.
Enjoy all and Good Night. (scroll down)

The WalMart express..
?The ship that comes from China with our 'stuff'
Now this is a ship!!!!!How WalMart gets all its stuff from China?. Get a load of this ship! 15,000 containers and a 207' beam!
And look at the crew size for a ship?longer than a US aircraft carrier which has a complement of 5,000 men and officers. ?Think it's big enough? Notice that 207' beam means it was NOT designed for?the Panama or?Suez Canal?. It is strictly transpacific. Check out the?cruise speed, 31 knots means the goods arrive 4 days before the typical?container ship (18-20 knots) on a China-to-California run. So this?behemoth is hugely competitive carrying perishable goods. ?This ship was built in three, perhaps as many as five sections. The sections floated together and then welded.
The ship is named Emma Maersk. The command bridge is higher than a 10-story building and has 11 crane rigs
that can operate simultaneously.
Additional info:?Country of origin - DenmarkLength - 1,302 ft?Width - 207 ft ?Net cargo - 123,200 tons?Engine - 14 in-line cylinders diesel engine (110,000 BHP)
Cruise Speed - 31?knots
Cargo capacity - 15,000 TEU (1 TEU = 20 ft3 container)Crew - 13 people
First Trip - Sept. 08, 2006
Construction cost?=?US?$145,000,000+Silicone painting applied to the ship bottom reduces water resistance and ?saves 317,000 gallons of diesel per year.
***der, that is a cool train with all the lights. Now have a new pic for the desktop. And thanks for the link to the site with the mini lights. It's bookmarked. Wife's birthday is early in the year, so who knows.
***Lee, impressive models. That crane is very cool!
***Jonathan, Good luck with the Sad Saab. And Congrats on winning the $10. Every bit helps!
Finally got my Christmas cards, now just need to fill them out and send them belated. Usually I go strait for Happy New Years cards, that way they are closer to being ontime. Rob
<>Hey, everyone.
One IBC root beer, please. Oh, and a cinnamon roll, too. The ones they have at the cafe where I work taste like frosted plaster!
I just finished up my first week at my new job. 3rd shift tech support for one of the world's largest investment banks. I haven't taken any calls yet but I've been listening in on some, and so far it all seems to be pretty straightforward. In fact, I'm usually bored out of my mind because I don't think they expected me to finish my online training so early (spare me! ) AND ace the tests they have at the end on the first try. Since it's a 24/7 operation, I will have to work Christmas, but I don't mind, seeing as I need the money. My very Catholic grandparents are sure to give me an earful about it, though. I still work my retail job on Sunday; we are going to get slammed with last minute shoppers!
So far I've sunk over $830 into my damaged Saab (which only cost me about $1500 in the first place). $630 for the radiator, $100 for a new headlight, and another $100 for a new tire. Now I face anywhere from $5-300 because my front wipers died and I've yet to locate the problem (blown fuse? broken wire? dead motor?). All of the shops in my area are closed till Thursday, too, though lI've been told we should only see percipitation on Sunday and I have a ride for that day. The transmission shifts clunkily, the clutch needs to be pressed to the floor to shift, and the steering is out of whack enough that I have trouble feeling whether or not the car is gripping on wet or snowy roads, making for white-knuckle driving from point A to point B. I want the Saab to keep going till President's Day so I can get a good price and financing package on a decent preowned car, but to be honest I think that's a little too optimistic.
To end on a good note, my manager passed out $1 scratch tickets to me and my coworkers at my tech support job yesterday. I won $10- the first time I've ever won any money from a lottery ticket! I'm hoping that'll be a harbinger of good things to come.
Merry Christmas, everyone!
Good Evening Diners!
First off I need a large coffee please and a toasted cinammon bun would go nicely with it or perhaps a mincemeat tart since it is the Christmas season.
More snow here tonight but at least it isn't too cold, only -8C at present. There is a storm going through just south of us so northern Minnesota will likely get hit the worst.
I read the posts on the grain cars and yes I do remember them. In 1961 my family moved to Rainy River, Ontario which is a CN division point on the line between Winnipeg and Thunder Bay. Most of the traffic on that line is grain going to the port in Thunder Bay. The cars used to transport it were all 40' box. I remember a few were still wood. Johnboy is right about the use of planks to fill in the door space. I remember the wood as a pale colour, likely fir in those days. Hope that helps Jim. By the way when steam was still used on that line( until 1959) they used some 2-10-2's. One is on display still in Rainy River.
Very hectic around here with Christmas preparations as we are hosting the family dinner this year. I expect to be given my marching orders early tomorrow as the list of items to buy for the dinner seems to be a very long one.
Hope everyone is well and a truly Merry Christmas to you!
CNCharlie.
Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,
I'd say it was another beautiful day in Paradise, but it was a bit warm for that. Probably got up around 90º, which is just a bit warm for Christmas. Even had to break down and run the a/c this evening. It does feel good.
We went out to the orange grove yesterday and harvested more fruit. The Mandarins are at their peak. Those that aren't picked will start to dry out around the middle of January. The Reina's are already sweet, although they will continue to improve for another month or so.
Paul - congratulations on the grandchild. Sorry to hear about Diane's problems with the birth. Hope things work out well after the hospital stay.
Wolfgang - good to see you here on the Coffee Shop (or Diner) thread (this is Ed M from TB). Nice frost photos.
Just a tad tired tonight, so this will be short.
Catch you guys tomorrow.
Ed
Evening folks-haven't been here in a few days, but just stopping in for a few moments.
Rob, I -like- that idea above! If you could just find an HO scale wig for the driver & the correct decals for the law enforcement agency that pulled her over, it would be perfect! Either way, it's still cool!
I forgot to notice if Ryan was in the diner today or not, but he mentioned how to make links active. I wondered why I'd never noticed the "chains" before, & its because for some reason they seem to be not available to me. They show, but not highlighted, or available to use. Dunno if it's my browser (use Firefox & also tried on IE, same thing) who knows. In the meantime until I figure things out, bear with me if I have a link to share by copying & pasting.
I got all my running around done today, & that includes my Christmas shopping. Not many to shop for-just my parents' & Dawn. So hopefully that means I can just hang around the house until I have to go back to Ww...ww.... ("work?" "yep.") on Wednesday. Of course train weathering, painting, & decaling will be done quite a bit. My 86' CSX ex L&N boxcar is coming along well, just awaiting some additional data decals from Microscale before the weathering starts. The other projects are coming along fine, & looking forward to starting another one, a D&TSL 2-bay ACF. I have the old HK decals, now just awaiting the hopper I snagged off Ebay & then I can start on it too.
Dawn's been on a scarf/muffler knitting kick, & I have a feeling I "may" get one for Christmas. NP, they're definitely "warm!" She worked overtime on one the other night for her beadworking friend in Washington, & sent it out yesterday Priority Mail, "hoping" that she may get it in time for Christmas.
Oh well, I better git-Logan's waiting for his W-A-L-K. Dawn & I's best thoughts for everyone here, & in case I don't get back here before, Merry Christmas! (although I'll more than likely stop in before then!)
der5997,
My train room is 25' x 32' (ish) the whole basement. The front room in the basement is 15' x 32' and that is where I'm working now. I do have a section of wall along the stairs that is just over 8' and I'm thinking about a port authority dock.
Check this dock crane out: http://www.bearcomarine.com/other.htm#crane

Paul, This is the first one.
This is the second one, but the model is before the self unloader was installed. The names have been changed on the models. Both of the ships have been knocked off their stands my my buddy's cat and need some minor repair and cleaning. Both are about 625'.
Good evening Diners: Many things have prevented mmr progress beyond painting the upper level yard tracks this week. Amongst which was more snow than we've had all this season so far in one dump yesterday; half a tooth falling out while I was eating a soft dessert last night; and then the need to take swift advantage of Kris' having the oven on for sausage rolls this morning. So, a no-sugar-added Christmas-cake type loaf thing was thrown together by yours truly based on the banana bran loaf that is now a staple of my morning coffee time. This thing has, besides the banana, rasins, dates, apricot, and chopped walnuts. The icing is a nsa marzipan Kris does each Christmas, it's mainly vanilla pudding mix and ground almonds in 18% coffee cream. The "snow" on the holly leaves is Splenda® Enjoy, there should be enough for virtually everyone.
I heard from Noah, and he has pics of the CP "Holiday Train" on his Photobucket account at http://s126.photobucket.com/albums/p89/WSOR_3807/holidaytrain2007/
While in his album, check out the flat car load in the http://s126.photobucket.com/albums/p89/WSOR_3807/Model%20Railroad/ album. ...and CapeJim, there seem to be plenty of 2 bay hoppers on his layout....BTW, what scale are you modeling again? Noah's in N. I've got some N 2bays that I may be persuaded to part with......
LilRob: back! How many versions of you have there been now? Hope the PC repair thing works out for you.
Wolfgang: ! Thanks for the gingerbread house, it looks delicious, and the scenicing is great. What do you model in mrr?
Sharp photos of the frost too. Thanks.
Dick:
DER JOHN: What's with the switch motor on top? There wasn't any way to mount underneath? I'm sure you checked it out though.
Frank:, where in Ontario would that be?
Corey: My layout is around the wall, and has passenger service. Not emphasized exactly, but far more passenger than most small modern roads would tolerate! Browse around in http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/ and see if there are any ideas. I made a lot of mistakes in this layout, so if you have questions, please ask.
Derrick: Welcome back!
Fergie: Good news about your MIL. Thinking of you this Christmas. It's a bitter sweet time for a lot of people. (Like Paul's John and Dianne)
Paul: Our daughter was full term, but premi weight. We'll pray everything works out for the baby, and of course, John and Dianne.

somehow I keep getting messed up on my favorites in this forum it seems there are about 3 different headings.
Who was it asked for Canadian bacon the other day? Folks, we don't have any I our stores. It all gets shipped to the US, so if you aren't getting yours, sort it out with the guys in the Northern Teir!
Lee: Those lakers sound like impressive models! Where does one store a couple of boats like that in the average train room? I decided against even trying to do a small freighter to carry containers to/from my terminal. I'd seen the prototype in this shot.
Rob: Not wanting to complicate your Christmas shopping, but did you check out http://www.richmondcontrols.com/...go go to Vehicle Lighting for the cherry light on that cruiser!

If I can swap the man in the car with a dark haired female, then it can represent my wife being pulled over on her way home to the farm. Bought one tonight for her. OK, THAT IS IT...LAST PRESENT...ALL DONE!
Healing thoughts to those in need. Have a good night all. Rob
Evening Gang: The baby is doing better. She's still a long way from being out of the woods. Both her lungs have tiny holes in them which is not unusual for preemes. She is getting plenty of o2 into her blood. She has plumped up a bit also. Thanks for all the prayers.
We got a call from AARP that they had received our paper work and would have it processed in 2 to 3 weeks. Now we're worried that Mary Ann will be without supplemental insurance since my Cobra will end on the 31st. I just may send the check to cobra for Feb and screw everything up. That's according to AARP. Just what I need to get me all shook up again.
I got the first 2 cars for the Hiawatha train set and the Milwaukee depot and 2 extra train sheds. Right now I don't even feel like going down to the basement and checking them out. I guess I should, it may help.
Lee: Are you going to share one of those bulkers with me? You sure did get lucky there. Are they models of speicific boats?
Well I guess I'll take a look at my goodies.
Good Night All
Evening all,
I got a nice surprise today. Buddy of mine needed to downsize some of his HO-scale stuff and gave me 2 Great lakes freighters. Both are almost 6' long, one is a self unloading ore boat. Both are a little dusty but in good condition. So now all I need is to find some Hewlits and I'm good to go. I'll post a few pictures once I clean them up a little.
Phillip, nice guitar I use to play (once upon a time).
Rolling stock, I've done some research and downloaded several pictures and it seems to me the pre 1970's rolling stock is rather boring. Covered cement hoppers, gondola, flat cars, box cars, ore cars, open hopper cars, and domed tank cars seem to be about it in the railroads inventory. Anybody have any insight on this one?

Hey guys.
I got a swimmeet for the High School at 3pm EST.
wish me luck
Hey! a fellow swimmer! (I just manage, but hey)
***In a former life I was a serious endurance athlete. One morning I swam 9 miles between breakfast & lunch just for fun and could have easily gone all day, piece of cake. One of my training partners was on a world record setting relay team but missed on both his Olympic Team bids. I was in as good a shape, but lacked his sprint speed. On a bike I would waste him (my other training partner was a world record setting distance cyclist). And running...forgetaboutit, that was my forte. Now I would probably get winded swimming a few laps of an Olympic pool, riding around the block or jogging to the mailbox. How a disease can ruin one's body. No complaints though, lots of wonderful memories I wouldn't trade for new ankles, a new spine, or anything else!
