Kevin, If your son has any questions about the USCG he is more than welcome to ask. He has to have a good resume to join; our recruiter's minimum quota is 1 active duty member a month so it's a bit harder to get in than most branches.  Since he is 16 I would recommend looking into the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, it will help on the resume and (providing they still have the program when he is 18) you get advanced 1 pay grade higher upon completion of boot camp then the rest of your peers.  Also if you want was can shoot a few email back and forth outside the diner.

Greyfox, I'm sitting on the edge of my seat to see more pictures of the swing gate in operation.  I've experimented with a couple of them and never had really good results.

Well the old diner was closed at 414 pages, I see we are up to 107 already and it's not even February, hard to believe we are that popular.

Good evening all

Finally got some time to stop in and say hello!Smile [:)]

Been reading all the posts and news but have just not had the time to type. We have been on the road a lot lately. My 15yr old daughter is race walking so my weekends have been spent at track meets and such. LAst weekend we were in Dartmouth for the DArtmouth relays. She did all right but came down with pretty severe case of shin splints. This weekend she went with her coach to Boston for some races. She did not walk but she was able to officiate and keep time for some friends. One of them is an Olympic hopeful for the race walk event.

RR wise been building structures working on the Delany Foundry. Have not done anything on a layout yet but plan on working on it this week. Sue I really love that picture and scene of yours great job. Jeff glad to see your foot is doing better. Paul sorry to hear of your friends troubles. (Sorry any word used does not adequetly describe the situation.) PC glad to hear your wife is doing so well. Ryan how is the roundhouse coming along. Lee glad to hear your only have to change parking spots, my 16 yr old son is considering going into the Coast Guard.

To all our Northern friends please keep that cold up there. The weather guru says it is supposed to be -12 deg F when I get out of work in the morning so please give us a break share something else.

Take care and prays for anyone in need that I missed.

 refill, please & thank you.

Saved a goat that had fallen though the ice layer on one of the drinking tubs, becoming trapped. Have no idea how long he was caught in there. Dried him off with a towel and in a short while he was able to stand again. Tonight will be another one in the teens, so hopefully he will be OK. So far, three baby goats have survived winter births this past week. Two did not. It's a tough time of year for them.

Hey, NE...Undefeated...WOW. Have no ties to NE, but I have enjoyed watching them play.

Well, sun is setting and I have evening rounds to do. Gotta run.... Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

LEE:  I don't have the need to cut the track on an angle because of the design of the gate. The tracks that meet on the left side as you see the photo, will meet square on, and the tracks that leave on the far right side swing away cleanly.

JOHNBOY: We know all too well how cold it is up where you live in Saskatchawan, we see the weather forecast every day showing "where" the cold air is, and where it is going, like -18F in Churchill on Hudson Bay, and Yellow Knife, etc. It takes about two to three days to drain south over the Berkshire from your turf.

Now the important stuff ( at least today), here in New England, you "know" who we are all routing for over the San Diego Chargers.......as for the 2nd game, I would have to give the edge to Green Bay Packers, they are tough to beat at home, especially in bitter cold and snow. The Giants certainly know how to play in cold and snow however. I look for a tough fought game. Turnovers may decide this game.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Well I just got some good news; my transfer orders arrived and I'm staying local, all I have to do is change parking spots in June.

Greyfox, great pictures!  I hope the swing gate lines up for you. Did you see the "how-to" file on swinging gates posted in MR?  They had a great idea about how to cut the track on an angle to meet the swing of the gate.

Foots doing just fine. Thanks for asking. I'm just changing the dressing daily and keeping it clean. Maybe it'll actually heal up one of these days. I'm not holding my breath.

Ed,

This line is semi-abandoned. It is only used seasonally by the ranch when cattle are sent to market. Due to lack of use, it is not worth the upgrade.  We saw a logging photo the tracks went standing water.  That would never pass permitting now.

We are having fun with this.

I don't know what the others do, but I do it the old fashioned way.  I type in [im g] (without the space), then paste the address of the photo, starting with the http://, then close by typing [/im g].  I usually use at least one ‘return' (or line break) before including the next photo just to provide some space between the photos.

Same method I use. I've never had a problem with it.

Here's what I've been working on this weekend.

Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Well, we're finally up and at 'em.  Sundays are our days for sleeping in late.  Zzz [zzz]  But the coffee is good and hot.  Fran has the bacon frying.  And I'm about to start the pot of chili Chef [C=:-)]  to have it ready for game time.  Probably in the mid 50's (+/- 13ºC) right now, so definitely sweater time.

FoulRift: ...if Frank/da_kraut is staying then I'm leaving.  Not only the diner but the forum as a whole...
Wow, Bob, that's quite the extreme reaction.  Sorry you feel the need to take that stance.  But you gotta do what you gotta do.

da_Kraut:  Thank you egmurphy for the formal invitation.  It is never my intention to offend anybody and would like to apologize to anybody that has taken offense to my screen name or anything that has been posted.
Please, Frank, it's Ed.  The egmurphy was something carried over from work where I used to sign docs E.G.Murphy.  If I had know when I joined the forum just how stilted it would sound a few years later I might have wound up with a username like da_Newfie.  Ontario, eh?  You'll feel right at home here with the rest of the northern contingent.

Sue:  I am not sure if you can see, but the water actually flows across the track in the back.  I will probably make the water deeper...

J.R. - glad to hear that your train sighseeing went well in Philly.  And glad that you caught the Acela back home.  One day I'd like to get back up there and ride it also.

Garry:  Hmmm. .... Well..... I just reread my first paragraph......er....uh... I sounded a bit like Mr. Rogers..... It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood and all that stuff.........
Actually, we try to maintain it that way here.

Terry:  OK, what am I doing wrong or not doing? I wanted to post some pics, but can only do one at a timeHow do you guys post multiple pictures?

Good morning everyone, a balmy 19.5F (-7C) here presently, however, the temp readout is dropping as we approach noontime, the opposite of what is supposed to happen. The cod wave has arrived on brisk NW winds, straight from the Arctic via Canada plains.

I have some photos to post at the end of this post, some of the railfan trip up in NH a couple of weeks ago, and the few of the swing gate for the layout. After considerable planning, and few trial and errors, in concert with some excellent advice from Der, Mike, Paul , Ryan and Mike, I decided to go with the swing gate. Lift out was an issue because I really didn't have a good area to store it, secondly, it is not the most convenient way to enter for sure. The lift up and drop down gates all had their own issue for me. I also had a different match-up to consider, I had a need for an "L" gate. The photos will show this much better than an explanation.

NJ BOB: On the contrary, let me welcome "you" Sign - Welcome [#welcome]. I have been away from the Diner quite a bit over the last two months or so, very busy, but I wave as I walk by near track 2 outside. BTW, I hope you decide to stay, life is far too short to get your hair up over bumps in the track, let go of discontent and move on......now go have a dinner on my tab, Cloe, anything for Bob!

FRANK: Let me welcome you to the Diner also,  Sign - Welcome [#welcome] and I hope you and Bob can get the derailment fixed soon. Go have dinner on me also, and there is are two pieces of pie left for you and Bob if RT hasn't eating them with Fergie.

CAPE JIM: Thank you for informing the new members of the Diner that I am reall y an OF from years back when this place was called the Coffee Shop. Gee time flies!!!!

TERRY: Hey, another January birthday!!! Happy Birthday young man!!!Happy B-Day [bday] ,I too have a Birthday arriving on the 26th....my last year in the decade of the '60's age bracket.

CN CHARLIE: I thought that Canadians living that far north didn't get colds, it is already cold that close to the arctic circle??? LOL  Are you eating Ryan's special winter recipe Chicken Soup? And drinking plenty of Ed's OJ???  I sure hope so. Hope your feeling better soon.

I see that we are posting our resume's on the Diner BB, so let me join the fun, although I don't think I will get an job offers as I approach 69, but who knows, maybe I can pass out smily faces at Wal-Mart....LOL

Born ( 1939) and raised about 1/2 mile from where we live right now, Cherry Valley, Ma , the east section of the town of Leicester named after  the Earl of Leicester, England, who granted the land to the first settlers. Married my teenage sweetheart who lived 1 mile up the road but didn't notice her until I was 17. We have been married 47 years (1960), have three boys and one girl, and 9 grandchildren. Spend 3 years in the Army at Nike Missile sites, which got me to White Sands and also El Paso several times as well as Mexico. Worked at Raytheon, Sprague Electric ( the former capacitor mfgr.) Hybrid Systems, Digital Equipment Corp., and lastly Intel ( ya, the microprocessor in your PC ). Retired in 2000.

MRR career began in 1948 with my first Lionel train set......then cars, girls, army, family life took over until I retired. Now I am trying to get tracks laid on my first HO layout which will be the era of 1920 to 1960's in Northern New England. Layout size is in 10.5' X 18' room.

This is Canadian National 7470, 0-6-0, crossing the Ellis River bridge, Glenn, New Hampshire under full steam.

The "L" shaped swing bridge. This will hold a double track, maybe three.

Three exterior type door hinges were used due to size and weight of the swing gate. I didn't want "any" drift in alignment when tracks meet at each end of the gate.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good morning, All.  I am going to slide into this back booth for coffee and a cinnamon roll.  I will take that sticky one with the heavy frosting.

 Sipping Tea

Johnboy,  Our goal is to put interest.  We saw a scene similar to that in one of our coffee table books, and the idea was born.

Rob,  As kids, when the trains would go by, we would run our horses to the track to wave at the engineers.  We were too naive to imagine our horses bolting from the noise.  Somehow we survived.

Lee,  Glad your GF got a chuckle.  Not just the bathers, but the loose horse running off with a pair of pants.  I had a horse that would do things like that, so I didn't have to make that up.Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]

Garry,  Yeah, for progress.  I must have missed that you were getting 25'.  You should be able to do a lot with that.

Later,  Sue

Greetings from the Acela northbound at 130mph (actually we have slowed to a mere 101). As it turns out when we arrived the Acela was the next train out and a little whinging on my part got the CFO to spring for the upgrade (with all the advance birthday/Christmas/anniversary presents I have I'll need to live to at least 100).

And Terry, I load the photos one at a time by hand simply changing the digits for the shot after I upload.

This is cool as I also get to test the Sprint Mobile Broadband on the laptop also. Seems much faster than theother mobile I tried lasst year and has worked everywhere so far save for Yosemite Park.  Catch ya laters,  J.R.

Good Morning.

I just had a little time to look over the various backgrounds of the diners as posted over the last couple of days or so. Wow! What great diversity. One of the many really good things about "The World's Greatest Hobby" is it does attract people from so many backgrounds and different ages. Looks like each person has plenty of things to feel good about outside our hobby. Fantastic.

Hmmm. .... Well..... I just reread my first paragraph......er....uh... I sounded a bit like Mr. Rogers..... It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood and all that stuff......... sorry about that.... oh well..... clang, clang, the trolley is here...oh never mind.......

I've some more progress on the layout to report. As I've been saying, I'm adding an extension following about 25' of walls. This is a norrow part of the layout due to space limitations along the side. It's two levels with double trackage on each level and some side tracks. The benchwork is done, all of the lower level track is in place and about half of the upper level track is in place. This is a time consuming hobby for sure.

Happy Model Railroading.

GMT, thanks, no hurry.  Let me know what I owe you for shipping.  What RR are you modeling?

Fergie, thanks for the offer on the cab ends looks like GMT is bailing me out of trouble this time.  I hope you get into port before bad weather.

FoulRift, I hope you reconsider your position on this situation in the diner.

To my dear neighbors up north; you need to try harder it's -11F here, and I have 4" of new snow.  I will be loading my open hoppers and ore cars with this white stuff and send it north.

To our disgruntled patrons of the diner; I really hope you guys can work out your differences; I enjoy our chats with FoulRift and look forward to new patron's comments, suggestions, and ideas.

Ok, well I need to wander out in my mini-blizzard and remove some snow.

Good Morning All,

A regular and one of Bills' donuts please. Went out this morning and it was around 20F but no wind so no worries. Got some outside pics of the old Reading terminal shed before the streets filled up and the sun got too high. We'll see how they turn out. Couldn't get them to load on Photobucket so I'll try again when I get home. Looks like the snow has missed us as well so that's all good. Only problem this morning with the camera was panhandlers in pursuit when they saw the camera out (sure sign of a tourista).

Lee - I'll get that stuff shipped when I get home.

Frank - welcome to the diner. Did you formerly play basketball or are you planning on getting a tennis referees chair for ops? The idea of air rights at home is intriguing.

NJBob - sorry you and Frank got off on the wrong foot. Hope you stick around anyway.

Good to hear Lara is continuing to improve and grow.

Ended up joy riding on SEPTAs' Frankford/Market Street Line yesterday. Rode to both ends and got an idea of what it's like here outside of the city center and it wasn't pretty. They seem to have the corner on the abandoned housing and factory market here - even worse than NYC or even Waterbury,Ct. The new mayor sure has his work cut out for him. On the other hand if we ever get an economic policy that works there is lots of room for expansion. Well enough for the soapbox - time to see about Amtrak schedules home as the CFO winds up her lacrosse seminars early today. Might even get home in time for the game. I figure this might be as close as the Giants get to the superbowl this year since they haven't stumbled yet and they are not noted for being that consistant.  CUL,     J.R.

Good morning,

It's -11F outside this morning!

Sue, thanks for the info, my GF got a kick out of your "NEKKED" cowboys in the water.  I tried the "EZ" water for a small pond and found out it was not easy at all (the plastic beads you melt in a pan).

Still waiting for the lake to freeze over, it would really help stabilize our weather here on the north coast.

 I guess it's a very early good morning as it's 12:30 a.m. here.

My sincere apology to all our southern neighbours but the weather really isn't my fault. It's all Johnboy's. He sends it to me and then it just roars by heading straight south. Remember that porous border? The windchill tonight is -45C but it will improve tomorrow to only -41! We do try to warm it a little as it zips past but only a little as we want to share.

Finally getting over a bad cold and will likely start work on my first effort of doing roads tomorrow. I have all that Woodland Scenic stuff to do it. I know there are less expensive alternatives but I don't have much to do.

My footwarmer(dog) has left for bed so I guess I should do the same or the road might not be too level tomorrow.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] from me! Those horses must spend plenty of time around trains not to spook at the metal smoking beasts as they chug by. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Look forward to seeing more pics of your wonderful layout scenes. Thumbs Up [tup]

I apparently missed a scuffle in the Diner. It is ashame to see someone leave over something said. Hope they will return.

Good night all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Good Evening Gang,

Just stopped by for a cocoa before I bounce onto the pillow.

Golly Chloe, you sure look great tonight.   What has put the sparkel in your eyes??Kisses [:X]

Ryan,  Jeff has beat me to the reply.  The CZ,  is the California Zephyr, the pride and joy of the Western Pacific, DRG&W, and CB&Q.  The CZ runs on the Last Mountain & Eastern Div. here in the Great White North.

Sue, I love your work and humour. Thats great looking scenery.Wow!! [wow]

Well I thought we had been cold up here, but just watch the Packer fans and Giants fans and players tomorrow in Green Bay.  Nobody will be green,  they all will be BLUE, BLUE, BLUE.            I love football but I would rather watch that game in the comfort of my living room with the fridge and washroom near by.

Sorry to see NJBob pull out. We all have to learn to give and accept apologizes and carry on.Sigh [sigh]

Sorry for the rough start Frank, but you are welcome here and so is Foul Rift, hope he changes his mind.

Well some of you younger folk can stay up if you want, but this old phart has to get horizontal for a few hours. Back to work in the morning.

Sweet dreams, Blessings to all, be sure to keep your socks dry.

Sue, what do you plan to use for water?  I'm looking around at all the different "stuff" and not sure what will be the best.  I do know no more of the melt this in the pan and pour it on the layout stuff for me.  I thought solder burned skin until I tried that stuff, LOL.

Lee,  I am using Woodland Scenics' Realistic Water.  I like to finish with their Water Effects to give ripples to the surface.  I started on this project about a year ago. It will probably be a month or so before I get to this section of the water.

This is a little washed out.  I made ripples around the bathers, and streamed a trickle of a waterfall in the back corner.  I am not sure if you can see, but the water actually flows across the track in the back.  I will probably make the water deeper as I complete the riverbed.

Foul Rift, I sent you an email earlier.

GMT, I replied to your email, thanks.

ED, I bought fine rubber ballast, I like how it lays down when glued in the conventional manner, but sometimes it takes more than one gluing.   I'm HO-scale so the yard will use most of it since the whole area will be gravel.

Paul, glad to hear the baby is doing better, it's tough news about your friend but I'm glad you're getting a chance to visit with him.

This week will be tough, I'm off MLK day, work Tuesday, off Wednesday and Thursday, work Friday, then have Saturday and Sunday off.

der,

Thanks for the great resume.  Most of us don't have such an exciting life history.

Our train rooms keep us out of trouble.  And yours does keep you busy.  We thought about N scale, but I would always need magnefication.  It is always fun to watch your progress.

Did you dry any bushes for trees this fall?  Mine are out in the wood shed.  Last year I brought a bunch of bugs in while they dried.  It was a mess.
