Quick Coffee TO GO, please.

My wife wants an extra section of sidewalk poured (for any future wheelchair use), so the concrete guys are back at it. Think I'll put my foot down when it comes time for the small rooms down at the barn to be poured. I can do those myself and save the $$$. It's not rocket science and who cares it they look pretty, considering it's a barn yard setting anyway.Mischief

Have a good day y'all.

Oh hey this smells good. I'm starving too.  Excuse me while I pound this down, but when I get to eating.. well. look out.  Ok, so I read about trains.. and everything  during the past year or so.   I collect and read as much stuff.  I get the feeling that alot of men were spending too much time planning it.. and NEVER building one.  I didn't want that to happen and I knew building my table would be fairly simple.  After all,  I already had the 'turned posts' all I had to was to get the plywood.  Oh yeah,  I can see you both grimacing with thoughts of past layouts.  Nothing of the sort as far as weakening and sagging. But thats another story.  It was to be placed in the living room, so it had to look nice as far as a tables go.  I wanted the living so my wife and I could spend time together.  If does nice, heck this could be a family thing.  So all I do... is to make the tables.  Two of them and stained and all with trim to be placed as the final piece. Nice looking, presentable as my wife puts it. So I make em, in an 'L' shape, with metal braces to re-enforce and keep em together.  Next thing ya know, I'm making paper layout strips as if were tracks.. to hold 3 mains!  Heck the whole reason why I laid down the paper, I wanted to count out the 1/8 inch per foot maximum .. and actually see the height.  I wanted to see it before my own eyes.   I have many books on train layouts and the CD's too~ But one book.. N Scale Primer .. beginners guide to N scale model railroading seem to be one I was fond of.  In his book, he maps out a nice layout, but the making of it it.. and the chapter was "Making a Firm Foundation'  So all I do next .. is just put some trim around the table .. and place the ribs one foot apart .. and lay ribs accordingly.  I have a miter saw.. and I had some left over wood from the ribs.  I had my plan, my drawing was basically just ramps... 4 inches wide.  I wanted to actually see it and my drawing said it should work out.  Well I had some left over wood.. the 7/32nd ply.. and I made some stencils.  Like the ones you see in my avatar photo.  I also made a straight ramp or two.  I cut some spacers.. and look out.. I'm already glueing and clamping.. Guns Blazen~  I was having too much fun.

Welcome aboard!  Glad you could find us, and yes, the food here is always good.  About the only downside to the diner is that every 50 pages we have to get all hooked up to our switcher and pick a new place to plant ourselves (apparently the server doesn't like threads over 50 pages, but that's neither here nor there).  I'm sure that you'll find most of us a friendly and personable group.

Well, my day off work is going about as well as I could have planned it.  I went this morning and helped my pastor put up some electric fencing, came home and met Amy for lunch (gotta love lunch dates!), and now I'm here, with nothing on the HD list and a sunny day looking at me from outside the window, and there just so happens to be a full tank of go-juice in the bike...

Y'all thinking what I'm thinking?  I might just go ride a little this afternoon as a relaxer.  I did see something interesting today.  Apparently the Jeff Smurf wood yard just south of town was in need of a little maintenance.  I caught CSX 8826 (SD40-2) providing motive power to a Jordan Spreader/ditch cleaner (which happened to still be lettered for SBD to boot!).  I also got the chance to watch Q681 heading southbound to Dothan whilst I was out this morning, so its been fairly busy and fun.  Going to try to do a little "actual" railfanning this evening once Heather gets home from school, maybe even find the camera and take a few photos if I can.  Well, right now I'm going to plant myself in the window booth and see what's coming up the line, I feel the ground shaking a little and can see wonderful black smoke in the distance approaching slowly...

" Oh wow, the Apple pie sounds good" "I'll have that"

Ok now where were we, Let me tell ya, this all went so fast, it was amazing I had taken any photos.  More or less, even knowing how to work the small camera that jiggles' every time my fat fingers try to push the button... but even how to work photobucket.. and the transfering of pics from the camera to photobucket.. to the forum.  Each was a learning curve for me. But I had read, in the forum, Maddog had said he would like to see a layout from start to finish.  So if any more time was to pass, I'd have no written record of my progress.  So now, I am posting my layout on the forum.. feeling like some jerk... cuz I really didn't follow most of the rules in planning my layout.  But then again, I wondered about how many other readers are just like me.. Guns Blazen.  My drawing was of nothing but the ramps.  It was un-charted territory for me.  I wanted N scale, and I wanted height... so I could do mountains.. and trees..and rustic.. and ol time..~ lol.  You know.. the typical layout a man my/our age builds when he gets up some morning and says... "Ya know, today I'd like to build an N scale Fiddle Yard"  So~... I post my pics.. and no one says anything.. lol.  I should have explicitly said.. at the beginning.. " I am a beginner, don't follow me.. "  So this one guy, his name Phillip, I'm sure you know him, nicest guy on Trains forum.. he says to me.. "So whats with the sloppy mess? The glue drippings?, of course yhou are going to re-enfore this before it falls apart" lol.. Well he didn't say that.. well in so many words he did.. I said "DOH!" in so many words.  Phillip has been of great help, by the time I am finished with picking his brain, he's either gonna hate me, or I'll be buying him dinner to a fine resturant.  Now aside from all this, I'm at the end of my story here,  I find myself now truly planning my layout.  The reasons why I am at this hurdle is because of my non stop ..Guns Blazen attitude.. in 'Just wanting to see how it looks'  Oh but I'm not complaining.. if it sounds like that way.. but its so over-whelming for me.  I had no idea there was to be this much planning.

Whew..  Hey you guys can go pay your tab if you want.. but I'll finish up here soon.

Well here's the report from the bone scan, and it's not good. They found three bones in my foot showing osteomyelitis and they all have to come out like pronto. So tomorrow morning I'll be going into surgery to have that done. The empty space left by the bone removal will be packed with antiseptic beads which will be removed after a few days. Over the course of a few months something that is unique to diabetics will occur. New bone will grow to completely fill the spaces left by the removal of the dead bones. They don't know why that happens with diabetics but it does.

"Ah refreshing"  Coke is refreshing..   'Ah'  "Thank  you"

Ok, now where were we, ah yes.. Phillip and my runaway ramp building. Ramp building, yes.. at first when I started I said to my wife .. "Yup, looks like my ol 'Aurora race car set' .. then towards the end.. I said.. " Ah yup, looks like the Wooden Roller Coaster I rode as a child."  Now I had my drawing, even then I could see how things were.  And I knew certain areas were definately allocated for staging/yards/houses/buidlings,engine houses.. the works!  Even as I was building the ramps, I could see how things needed to be added to the ramps for those areas.  Then finished, I then started to half heartedly to add more ply to give more of a footprint to those staging areas.... then I come to the point.. I can't add anything until I truly design my bottom area for tracks and train yard.  So~ .. I had posted my idea of my interpretation of what a passenger / working train yard could be.. and I get a reply from Phillip.  Aside from all that, I had come to the conclusion, there is no way I can have 3 mains.  Sure..build 4 inch wide ramps.. but there is only so many pieces of the pie you can cut.  Something has to give. So, I'm running 2 mains with an occasional side rail.  Giving up that 3rd main, opens up alot of room.  So I post a help question, of how do you run 2 mains into a passenger / working freight yard.. with A/D track.   Well Phillip presents some nice ideas, several, but what stumped me was his last link.  Talk about it all being 'Food for thought'.. or 'Thought for Food' .. it made me think... I have so much planning way ahead of me.  The last link was everything you could possibly put on a layout... everything... including time periods.. and functions... and various places to allocated.  Now, I find myself, pulling out every building I've got.. to see how many Train Stations I have and their sizes.  My over-all scheme of the layout is 1925-1985.. truly the best years of RR. In my humble opinion anyways.  With 4 designated areas for staging and so on.  The lowest level being the newest in years.. and as you progress.. you go back in time.  Well, thats going to take some planning, some research, some time, some money.. and a few choice buildings representing my layout.  I find myself at this point, how can I even determine what / where tracks go in a layout.. until I have the actual building in my hand.. know its actual size.. place it down on the layout and then determine where the tracks go.  So yeah, I'm over-whelmed.  The real planning starts now.  I'm grateful for Phillip in helping me.  But right now, I've got some planning and buying to do.

Good evening,

Chloe? Bucket of good, strong, potentially lethal Diner coffee please 'n thank-you...with some of that wonderful struedel! Dinner Yup, over at the RC.

Well TODD, thanks for the duct tape and Vicks... I think the disease has passed. Loving Wife escaped again this morning, and seems just about back to almost normal. So far, avoiding her completely has worked! Made for a crappy anniversery this past weekend...but my health has come through just about intact (*knocking on wood*). We'll celebrate this weekend...unless the rain/sn** being forecast turns the roads slick and the local drivers into idiots.Dunce

KEITH: Welcome Sir! have a cup of extra-strong Diner "boot" coffee on me, well actually...on the expense account my editor ("THAT Editor") has here.

JEFF: Sorry to hear the latest on your foot, but also amazed at the same time. I never knew bones would regenerate like that. See? Learn something new everyday. Our best thoughts/wishes to you, and anybody else still on sick-call, troubled, distressed. Angel

Last night, I spent 5 long, grueling hours at the newspaper office. THAT editor said we had to find articles, and photos to submit to the Iowa Newspaper Association's "excellence in newspapers" competition. Winners are announced at an early February trade show/convention...or dog and pony show as I call it. So, I spent several hours over the past few days digging through all my stuff, making a careful list thinking we'd just go and pull stuff out of the extra papers. They want "tear sheets" which is just a fancy way of saying "cut-out the page it ran on and send it." WRONG. THAT editor had me go through the past year worth of papers, tagging everything "education," everything "business," any and all feature articles, personality profiles, photo features, news photo, sports photo...etc., etc., etc.

I finally crapped-out on THAT editor and Mr. Publisher around 11 pm. They kept going for at least another hour or so after THAT. At least Mr. Publisher went and got us food... THAT editor is kinda award-driven and wanted to saturate every catagory with the maximum number of entries. I don't know...a snazzy plaque (1st place) would be nice, a certificate (2nd or 3rd place) would be fine... but in the end, THAT and a buck gets me coffee; as long as I've got the buck. I just hope I don't have to go to the awards banquet. One thing I can't stand, is an awards show: people patting each other on the back "gee, look how great we are...yea US!" Whatever. Not my bag. Yeah, it'd be nice to have the INA say "wow, whatta photo!" and be talkin' about something I did. But, my satisfaction is not dependent on the INA.

With all THAT said... I'm w**king on an article about a "heritage farm," a farm under the ownership of the same family for 150 years. The more intersting story is the 88 year old lady still living there who kills coons with a sledgehammer...and the best story is her whacking a coon with a sledgehammer. I asked her daughter why she didn't just use a shotgun. "Oh God no! We took those away from her!!!" Very fiesty lady.

I keep chipping away on the XTRA grain hoppers during bouts of writer's block. Another Athearn foobie will be stripped, and repainted ICG orange but patched for the Chicago Central in a correct lettering and number scheme for a 4740 cu. ft. hopper. Yep...punch my RC ticket again please 'n thankya!

Hey ya'll.

would have came in yeterday, but I got upset stomach again. I seem to be getting that a lot recently, wonder if it's what I'm eating....

Got some progress done on the MR front. Finished up an Athearn PS 5344 box car kit. I decided not to bug athearn about 2 of the stirrup being broke when I opened the box since they tried to sell me some $30 part to replace one lift ring that fell on my F45. I bought some cal-scale ones for $5 instead and will install them on some other units. I'm going to try the telephone wire for MU hoses thing on some athearn units that are on the bench whn I add lift rings to them.

I'll be at the RC catching up.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evening gang. Chloe, I'll take a RBF and some fries, thanks.

Sorry I haven't been in in a few days. Been super busy with an English paper, which is making me really hate my teacher...

Hope all are well, and as always, prayers for those who aren't.

So glad tomorrow's Friday. Have only three classes (history, double algebra, and double driver's ed) tomorrow because of an assembly. Unfortunately, I have to wear a tie  :/ And starting next Thursday, I have to wear one every day *sigh*...

Sorry I can't hang. Catch ya later...

Good evening all, just checking in for the night before heading out to my "nightly' duties (give Heather a bath, take care of some stuff aroudn the house and hit the sack).  I'll just have an RBF and sit at the RC, if youse guys don't mind.  I thought was it interesting to see the Jordan Spreader still working the rails down here, and especially in the SBD call letters (although I guess I shouldn't be surprised).  Well, not much happening, so I'll sit here and enjoy my RBF and relax for a little bit.

Evening, Chloe - just a hot cocoa to go, please. Thanks!

Can't stay long for now, will have to come back tomorrow and get caught up, I guess. Finally connected up with daughter and son-in-law and got to treat them and Drew the Wonderful (Grandson) to dinner. Pretty good evening, though I think they were trying to go easy on me, based on what they ordered (they ordered before I did). I got to take Drew over to my side of the booth for a while - he was busy noticing the stuffed deer head on one wall (and maybe the TV screen next to that), and the large-mouthed bass on the other wall, plus trying to run his Ronald McD. toy through the macaroni and cheese... Ah, grandkids!

As Calif.Tom's guv might say, "Ah'll be baaack!" Smile,Wink, & Grin

[Edit] And looky who has TOP - okay, Chloe, start the tab for the night and early morning crew of Diners. I'll settle the tab in the morning...

Blessings and prayers,

 Evenin' folks!

Just popped in to get a cup of decafe before bed.

Jeffrey I will keep you in my prayers for a successful operation and full and complete recovery.  I figured that they would very probably find the scourse of the infection.  Now it can be dealt with.  I'm fihuring this will be an overnight at least?

My son and I have been emailing back and forth since I got home from the Properties meeting tonight.  He has traced some of the people on the quilt back to Lyme, NY near Watertown, NY.  He now believes that the quilt was made between 1890 and 1900 given the birth dates of some of the people listed on the quilt.  That would be reasonable......

The committee meeting went very well.  The Council professional charged with camp properties started off by handing out a camp budget for this camp and the same information for all our council camps.....  A breath of fresh air whooshed through the room.....  Our council Executive who left last year used to have a major hyperventilating fit if anyone asked anything about the budget.  Last year our Ranger at camp had a budget of $5,000 for anything that he needed to fix for the year.......  He now hjas a budget of $10,000 and several other accounts for vehicle repairs, tractor, mower repairs, etc.  I haven't seen him smile that much in years!  Our old council is now merged with another so the whole format for the new council is changed.

I hope all of you have a great evening, and Jeffrey remember we are all thinking of you!

 Good Morning, Folks

Zoe, it´s a toasted bagel and coffee in my LKAB  mug, please.

I have lit up a candle for Jeffrey in our local church - my Angel for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.

I am glad that the rest of the gang is more or less OK and that Garry´s BIL is also on the way of recovery. Things have been moving on quite rapidly here on my side - we received the first check from welfare so at least we can buy food and pay some bills. We also found a flat for us to live in, actually, it is not such a bad place as I was afraid it would be. There is even some room for a little (little? - tiny!) layout. Moving house will be done by the end of this month. I will keep you posted on all further developments.  Although not being happy about all of this, I am glad, that one step ahead is being done now. There are still many to go...

Keith - a late, but hearty Sign - Welcome from a mad German!

Sue - good to see you can stop by more frequently now!

Robby - I like those pics of the Railbox cars - they just look like my first attempt in weathering! Will search for a pic and post it here for comparison!

It is a clear but cold day today, temperature just above freezing. A good day for all of you and blessings for those in need!

Mornin' Ham and eggs please. Scrambled. Coffee and a sweet roll Thank you. Today: Showers, mainly before 1pm. High near 53. North wind between 10 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 37. North northwest wind between 3 and 8 mph. So far 2 inches of rain. I don't think I'll dump my rain gage till it's done. Less math. Got one switch panel mounted yesterday. Today I hope to get it wired in and see what happens. But the sump pump is short cycling so that means the switch is wearing out. Best replace that while it's not filling the sump too fast and I have time to do it before the basement floods.

Jeff- Bad news about the foot. However the regeneration of bone is kinda cool, never new that. Too bad that is offset by so many downsides. I guess you'll be back in the hospital today, so, Angel

Blazzin- Sign - Welcometo the diner. Your experience with slapping something together cause you wanted to see what it looks like sounds exactly like me. That's what I did. I've revised a couple of times and expanded and didn't learn. Oh well. It's usable to me and I'm happy but I wouldn't recommend that approach to anyone!!! Laugh You're overall concept sounds very interesting.

Oh and as far as paying for your bill here. Good news is, the person who posts the first post on the page, or Top Of Page, buys for that page. Bad news is...., Well, you've never seen Philip eat pies. Wow. And Barry, well words just can't describe.

Ugh, the page is doing that wacked out doesn't wrap thing again. Haven't seen that in a long time. Oh well at least this will probably be the last page anyway. Maybe I oughta....  Nah, wait till later so's people don't wake up and try and find the place in a morning groggyness and before coffee.

Best step into the Chapel Car Garry sent before I get on with my day.

Have a Great Day!!!

Well today is the day. This is the second time my right foot has been operated on. I hope that they get all the infected bone out on this go-round because I don't want to have to do this again. This will be my last posting until after the operation is completed.

Good Morning All,

53F and cloudy with showers precdicted later. I'll have a regular (coffee cream, no sugar) and a blueberry bagel please. Late evening again last night as I stayed here at the shop to get to a good stopping point on a Theodore F-1 car that got crashed at Watkins Glen a couple of weekends ago. The tub looks ok and most of the damage is confined to the left rear suspension, the wing mounts (front and rear) and some side panels for the ground effect tunnels. With few or no parts, repairs will take a while but the owner does have most of the original blueprints so that's a huge help.

Ordered a couple of remediated BLI locos for the future "museum" yard on the future new layout. They had a Sante Fe warbonnet ABF7 set that looked too good to pass up as well as a N&W J (600 - round Vandy tender) both with DCC and sound. CFO said I'd been good about purchases during the big part of the reconstruction so go for it. Still working on the track plan and trying to get Ryans tutorial tips for PlanIt down. That'd work better if I could hit the back button when I make an error and eliminate the last step I've done and restart at just that step. When you mess up it is a dickens trying to get restarted unless I'm doing something wrong (likely given my dismal computing skills).

Speaking of Ryan - thanks for posting the menu. I love looking at the culinary preferences from days past and the prices are outa sight! Fancy getting food like that on an Amtrak run. Most of the Amtrak trains aren't overnighters and have only a snack car though the people do their best with what they're given (coffee was good).

Jeff interesting bit about the bone regeneration. Wonder if that had anything to do with my minimum foot repair time as I'm now officially "pre diabetic" what ever that means.

Ulrich - one step at a time will do ya. Focus on the task at hand and do your best on each one and before you know it you'll be back on plane though it might be a different sea. (Like those nautical references?)

Chris - so your wife escaped - how you goiing to "splain that enclosure to the sheriff when he checks up on her allegations?

Keith - welcome to the diner. You've been briefed on Vinnie (cousin of Zoe and Chloe our vitual waitresses) but also watch out for Chloes' mean left hook. Mind your P's and Q's and you'll have no issues. My previous layouts were pretty much unplanned but I'm between just now and trying to plan the next. We'll see how long the plan lasts when I can actually start construction (probably next year). Besides Tom, we've had some other characters from Ca. in and out and I spent four years in Hanford in the middle sixties.

Hope the rest of you get well soon sick bay seems to be filling up. Lots to do again today so I'll catch you all later. J.R.

Good morning.  Its a rainy/foogy morning.

Not much planned today.  Maybe a trip to the LHS later.  Might pick up a few pieces of track, and what ever else I can find.

 Jeff.....Hope everything goes good today.

Ulrich....I took a trip to a steel mill a few miles from my house, and came across all of the Railboxs.  I couldn't get a good shot, due to a water treatment plant.  The steel plant normally has coil cars, but not today.  I guess they all moved on.  Plus your weathering ins't that bad Wink.

Keith......Welcome.  All I can say is.............."Watch out for flying pies!!!!!!!"

Well I guess I better get some shots for the WPF.   Gotta find some decent ones.

 Have a good morning.

Good morning, All.  Looks like Jim has the top of the page.  Even though it was yesterday, is his tab still open?

Jim, How is that layout coming?

Philip,  I see lots of scooter news, but how is your layout progressing?

Garry,  You have been so good about posting lots of photos.  We all appreciate that.

Ulrich,  It does feel good to be around more.  Thanks.

Jeff, Glad to hear that you are doing better.  Hope to see you back in the swing of things again.

Sign - Welcome Keith.

Later,   Sue

And Good Morning--

It is always a good idea in this place as we seem to get anonymous gifts of pie catapaults----no ma'am---yes ma'am---I'll be good----I never brought those things in---

We are now dull and showeery/drizzly and very foggy out here---a high of 13C is expected with periods of rain---tomorrow---while I do seminars natch---it will be sunny---

Chloe, I'll have a jug of coffee and some toast/jam please---I'll wait for the switcher to move us to the other side of the yard

 Hey guys and gals.

Still feeling good. I'm tired though because it's been a long week, so I ain't going to the game tonight. I think tomorrow I'm just going to work my tail off on soldering the layout and see how much I can get done.
