Since I left work on Friday there has been 4 pages of posts, and other four worth mentioning... Whistling [:-^]

Sign - Welcome [#welcome]back John Bakeer, about time!  Nick was beginning to think he was the only Englander left on the board...

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Scott... stay away from Chief... he likes to hang out in outhouses and swamps, sometimes at the same time! Shock [:O]

GregM - Congrats!!!!!

No work on the shed all weekend.  Had Susan's party yesterday and stabbed myself in the hand while seperating burgers... hurts today... took a lot to get it to stop bleeding.

Susan is upstairs sleeping... she got sick at the butcher yesterday morning and while I was in the bank depositing money.  I told her she wouldn't have to go to the butcher with me any more, and I can take care of banking, since both seem to make her sick... Wink [;)] She said she was fine at the bank, it is just the heat, so she can continue banking... Sad [:(] And she has to monitor me to make sure I don't buy any more trains!

88 - watch that hand for infection, Bro.  Sooooo, any NEWS yet?Whistling [:-^]

GregM - Congratulations!

Fife - I wish Doug Murphy would send some rain down/over to us!  It keeps raining just north or south of us and lawn is looking pretty sad now.  Need to water again I guess.

Spankybird, that is a big layout!  4 minutes flat out???  I wish I had that kind of realestate.

Good luck Lee - hope you get your locomotive from the guy.

Don - how about some pics of the benchwork?  I was thinking, you could route the trim work so it comes in on the sides at the top and fills up around the plywood.

Phil - looks like a nice locomotive your grandson picked out!  I see he likes the 1:1 models more than 1:48!  I'd try to break him of the rivet-counting thing early!  Mischief [:-,]

GregM - Congratulations on the new arrival!

Jim/Don - Would you belive the gamesroom is actually around two weeks behind due to all the rain we have had. Hope to have a party next spring when we get it all finished inside and FIL gets his Seeburg Jukebox sorted out. Hopefully my son Charlie and I will have the layout baseboards built and track/electrics up and running by then. Hope to have a BBQ and I'll lay in a stock of Anchor SteamSmile [:)]. Leaves you guys plenty of time to save up those AirmilesWink [;)]

Have a good Sunday all

Afternoon to all,

First would be congrats to Greg M & family.

Don B, 2000 in your class, yikes we had apx.225 and about 100 showed last nite not to bad for 50 yrs. Sadly there are 32 known to be deceased. We had a good time and nobody rich enough to have a young companion. I promised a report thats it.

We have had a slow drizzle/rain today and its really needed as much of the state has been under a outdoor fire ban. grilling was allowed. also we have a forest fire way up north thats been burning over a week now.I don't think this rain is reaching them though.

No trains today, resting.                  Sir James

Grayson, you do it to your self.  Don't be so paranoid.

Sitting in the mighty Montgomery Regional Airport.   Has KLM, Delta, Continental, US Airways and some more.  Tiny airport and the smallest I have ever been in [including Palm Springs].  Lots of runways.  Has Air National Guard unit with a few C130's and a couple of F16's.  Just got buzzed three times by two F16's and then they landed.  Killing time as flight is not until 4:50 CDT.  No keoshes and TSA takes your bag and puts it on a table in front of you.  Opens it up and "wands" it and closes it up.  Then it goes to baggage area.  Told the lady I was not use to such personal service.  She laughed and said I was being polite.  Went through security.  Told screeners that I wished every airport was this way.  I was the only person in line so I could take my time.  We all chatted and etc.  Now sitting in little business center at the gate.  Tried to sit at gate and use internet.  Wireless kept going in and out.  Guess antenna is in here.

Got first class from Charlotte to RDU.  Big deal.  Hope flight is not late getting to Charlotte as I have 50 minutes to go from E terminal [wing way away from rest of main airport] to C.  OH NO, hear babby crying.  Means it will be on flight with me.

Afternoon all!

Doug - hope the eye heals quickly.

rrtraincollector - good to see you back.

Welcome to the new folks - stick around!

Don B - Been really busy the past few days which is why I have not had time to post. In addition to the problems below, I have also been doing some layout wiring for a custom a friend of mine is doing, so that has kept me busy.

Had to hire a lawn sprinkler company to find two valves (idiot home ower before me had them buried all over the yard instead of being in a central manifold box) I could not locate. One was leaking. It took them approx 8 hours of digging and using a test signal device (we found out they do not work when the valves are buried like mine). Finally found them - front yard looks like a trencher went wild. The bill for this is gonna be very bad for my checkbook.

Daughter's Taurus acting up. Loses all electrical power like the battery is disconnected. Only happens when it is really hot outside and the car has sat and heat soaked for a while. Jumping it does nothing. Battery is good. It has 13 volts on it when the car is dead. Tapping the fuse block under the hood will cause it to work again. Checked all wires - all good, clean, and tight. Checked Battery terminals - good, clean , and tight. Took battery terminals loose and cleaned them with wire battery brush anyway - no difference. Checked the two negative wires from battery to frame and battery to starter motor - good, clean, and tight. I suspect a bad fuse - but could not find one. Weird. Still under Extended Service Plan so dropped it off tonight for the dealer to look at it tomorrow.

BTW - also took a heat gun to the fuse block area (including the giant Ford Mega-Fuse on the fuse block) after idling the car and heating up the engine to simulate a really hot day (temps here have dropped from 100's to low 90's) and could not make it fail.

BTW2 - when the car is dead I mean dead. No radio, no lights (interior or exterior), no horn, no elec windows, no elec locks, no alarm, absolutely nothing. When it finally works - the radio is completely reset as if you had disconnected the battery. I know Ford has a bad reputation for poor electrical design - guess I am finding this out first hand.

Any ideas?

Have a great evening all!

Regards, Roy

Don B, The E-town Fair draws about 25-30K if the weather is good for the 7 day run.  Since there is no admission charge there is no hard count but that is the estimate.  Unfortunately the first four days are predicted to have showers off and on.  So far (today) it has been right on.  Sun has not been out at all today, but only about 1/10" of rain.

Take care,

GregM and Karen - Cong on the new family member! Thumbs Up [tup]

Jim and Don - the layout is coming along, but kinda of slowly with all the other projects at the Museum. The layout is 25' x 60' "E" shape. In its final design, it will have 3 main lines.

We also added a yard section this week.

Here is our track plan

Grayson - I don't see why anyone doesn't wish to talk with you. I personally just don't spend much time on the forum. Too many other thinks going on.

Finally got back online and now it sounds like it's going to rain (PLEASE), bus sun is shining????  Roy, we had a Taurus and never had any problems.  That's weird that it is tied to the temperature and you couldn't make the fuses fail - could it be that something gets hot, expands and touches a shorted wire somewhere???  RT - I don't think Lisa has posted for a week or more?

WR

Thought it might be a starter relay, sometimes if you smack them they'll reset or you have a loose wire to your fuse box. As far as heat activating it mite be a bad relay.

Jim

Been raining in Phily all day. Steady drizzle. Ran the trains alot today and the computer. Looks like they're calling for ran the whole week. Just when I put the old Harley back together it rains.

Might be good it's quite at work when it rains everyone stays indoors.

Jim,
No news yet... Susan wants to wait till Wednesday... She woke me up at 2:30am yesterday wanting a Cheeseburger with Pickels and Bacon, Saurkraut, and sliced tomatoes... If I ate half of what she does I would be in the toilet puking my innards out... she is eating the world's worst food combinations...

Oh, bought more fish for the tank on Friday.  So it looks like the aquarium is sticking around, but not in the train room.  Now have 2 Ciclids, 1 parrot fish (named Jimmy by Susan), 1 speckled catfish (the original tenant), and one plecostomus.

I had a thunderbird that did that when the alternator went bad.  Good thing it has the service plan.  The only problem is they need to recreate the problem before they can diagnose.  It always works at the dealer.  Ask them to test the alternator.

Hi everyone!

RT -just been reading and observing.  Still very hot and dry around here.  Grass goes crunch - crunch so no mowing.  Garden has dried up except for a few pepper plants that I'm keeping watered and the tomatoes are about all gone.

Hubby's hip is fine, the gout in his foot is greatly improved and he is ready to go back to work - we go back to the Dr on Wednesday and he should release him.  The "weekly special"  for him last week was a root canal!  Don't think I'm ever going to get him straightened out.  However - Deer season is rapidly approaching (about 3 weeks away for Bow season) so he has a big incentive.  Told him he could only hunt off the ground - NO CLIMBING TREES this year or he would be the one getting SHOT!!

Working a little on the layout - been too hot in the garage to do much.  Also, need to get myself back to work - been slack on the job search since I needed to be at home to look after David and everything around here.  Need train money and Christmas is quickly approaching.

Hoping to get a few train items for my special day (Tues).

Hope everyone has a great week!

Good evening all,

It was hot and humid again in SE Indiana and still no rain.  Up north they are getting some, but not down here.  I see where the Michigan NASCAR race was rained out.  We spent the weekend with the older daughter, her husband and their two kids at our place.  Grandkids are nice, but they do wear you out.  I had bacon and biscuits today for breakfast.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

GregM, Congratulations!  Glad to hear everyone is doing well.  As Chief said, spoil him and when he cries, etc., hand him back.

Roy, A few things, I doubt it is the alternator, but I have seen diodes go bad with heat, I doubt that it would work some times and not others, besides, the battery still shows full charge.  Try the battery with a load on to see if the alternator keeps up.  From what you have described, I would place my bets on a computer module.  Little square thing probably mounted to the firewall on the engine side...I believe up on the drivers side of the car.  They are not particularly expensive, but control the whole works and can create havoc when they don't work right.  The other thing would be the connections to the battery leads (or further down the line).  If a lead is loose, or gets loose when hot, it could cause the trouble you noticed.

Chief, hope you get home safe and sound.  Also hope you got a little bit of the rain.

Spankybird, nice Ahrens Fox on that flat car.  I had thought about getting one, but am waiting till they come out with a white one.  The fire department I was on had one that they sold to a volunteer department for $1.00.  They take great care of it and it can outpump many modern engines.

Great day at church.  Wife stayed home with the kids as they were all a little under the weather from travelling, etc.  I start call first thing in the morning, so train time may be minimal this week.

God Bless,

Dennis

Thanks Dennis and Kurt - 2 votes for them to check the alternator - I will point that out when I talk to them in the am! I will also make sure they load test the battery.

Lisa - good to hear your husband is doing better.

Greg M - congrats!

Dennis - a friend of mine in Nashville bought a fire pumper truck from his volunteer department (he has served for many many years). He had to get some sort of clearance from Homeland Security (I think) in order to buy the truck. Apparently they do not want someone to be able to cause havoc by masquerading as firemen.

Got about 5 minutes of rain here with lots of thunder, but it's long gone now.  Hope we get more rain through this week!

Lisa - ditto!  Glad to hear your hubby is doing well.  At the wedding I caught up with my sister and BiL who moved to Charlotte.  They really like it -- except for the Palmetto Bugs!!!  LOL

88 - is this a salt water aquarium?  I can't remember any fresh fish called a parrot fish, but I know there is a whole family of pf's that are salt water fish....  By the time I treated the water here to be able to keep fish it was costing me a fortune in time, effort and that green stuff, so our aquarium went to a friend at work.

John S, when you get off work, there are some frozen strawberry shortcake deserts (weightwatchers) in the freezer -- they are actually very good!  None for Chewy, but you know where those bacon treats are don't you?  TTFN!

Jim,
No it is fresh water... I'll see if I can get pic of Jimmy tomorrow, he likes to hide in the fake grass and under the log.

Chief must be tired, has posted tonight.

Got soundboard cut and shaped for layout.  Used 4 sheets, only put a single layer down.  Ironically need about 3 more sq feet to finish.  I will check and see if they (Lowes) has any partial or broken sheets.  Hate to buy a full sheet for such a small area.  I don't like throwing stuff away.  But will probably end up doing so.   Thanks to the Chiefs handy dandy directions:

My rules for Celetex Soundstop:

Celetex Soundstop is light weight.  Is dusty but not bad after it is handled some.  Can be cut with utility knife [I have cut it with my lockblade knife].  Saw with fine tooth saw [I used jig saw instead of table saw as saw easy].  Turn sheet upside down from side you want up [due to ragged edges].  Seal with latex paint and it will get harder and no dust.  I used the "printed label" side up.  Will hold deck screws.  Going to use small drywall screws for track.  Do not paint as I did before installing.  Paint makes it "curl" up some.  Unpainted, will flatten [humidity wiil make it curl slightly] and glue down easier [half of my sheets are unpainted and work better].  Put screws into only the sheets of Soundstop [not into the hard wood below].  Paint will make a difference once installed.  I highly recommend this product.  Solid but not too hard.  $9 to $10 a sheet.

Other than working on that all day, nothing goin on here.

Good morning all,

Either the forum is on the fritz or I am the early bird this morning.  Still recovering from the weekend.  Was hoping I could sleep in on the way to work, but the carpooler was off sick today.  Not much going on today, and hopefully it will be a quiet day at work.  Just the regular fare on the dining car for "Points East".  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana
