Can't wait to see those holiday photos, Jim!

Doug, I did a stretch of the inner loop with latex caulk and a stretch of the outer loop with soft insulation. No discernable difference between the two. I chalked it up to a waste of time.

Keith, I've changed my game plan. No more battery powered campfire. A battery powered fire in a 55 gallon drum is easier!

Brent, I got your train cars today.

Jim

Greetings from my lab class whilst my students work on their web applications. I get to check in with you before making my rounds. My most favorite class of the quarter. Hope the Chief didn't react to his flu shot - I got one today too.

Doug now you mention it my trains did seem louder at the hobby shop when I was in VA as to whenI ranon my O27 and he has foam to quiet it down some I think the fast track makes the trains louder.

Jim,

They don't seem overly loud, but they aren't quiet either.  I really like the growl that they produce.  It sounds great and powerful.  I can't wait to complete this set.  I've always wanted those aluminum cars.  I've got big plans for Christmas time this year.  Once the Christmas tree goes up, check out photo fun each Sunday.  I will be taking a lot of pictures throughout the season.  I've got some suprises in store for Christmas day photo fun...

it looks like you will use up all of that space!  What is that, 12x18ish?

I'm still contemplating on how build to build the train room.  As I have posted a couple times before, I have a 11.5' x 21" room in my basement at my disposal, but I might split that in half to make a separate train room and a musical instrument room.  I have a set of drums that are in the closet now that I would like to set up...but I don't want to go too small.  Your layout is definately busier than mine will be...

Wes,
Yes the storage area, and Helix will all be visible by squatting down... I got the idea because Fife said he would hate to damage the walls in the trainroom... so I had to find a way to store the trains that weren't running... and wanted a FUN way to store them and still be able to run them.

There will be a few access areas, the large grey box closest to you in the sideview is a cutout where a coal mine will sit, and there will be a large access panel where the town is located.  The rear of the Helix will be on casters so it can be moved out of the way so the coal mine access panel can be reached.

This is the trainroom:

Wow, I'm interested in that storage area.  I take it that you are going to be able to see the sub-levels just by squatting down?  How big is that tabletop, and are you sure you can reach everything to model?  I see what looks like a single access hole there, but that might be going around a house jack, as far as I can tell.  That looks like a fun layout to navagate.

So Don's realestate expansion project got me to thinking about train storage and display on my upcoming project...

Let me know what you think...

This is the track plan:

Storage Track track plan:

You can't see if from this angle, but there is a 4 level storage track under the layout...

3D view:

Side view:

The helix is O-72 and results in 6 inches of clearance and a 3% grade.  I'll be able to store trains on either long side of the layout for a total train length of 15 feet per leg.  I'm working on how to add switching capabilities (so I can change engines on the different trains)...

Just back from Lowes.  Picked up all the supplies to do the NEW plumbing job tonight.  As luck would have it there was a very friendly, and helpful plumber picking up supplies for his next project.  I explained what I found, and how I planned to fix it, and he told me I was right on track! Smile [:)] I asked what I would need and as he was gathering the stuff he explained how it went together and what it was for, he even put it all in my cart! Thumbs Up [tup] I asked how much I owed him and he said, 'Nothing, just get it done right.'  His partner was there and said it would cost $500.00 for them to do the job... when I explained the other plumbing work I've done my total savings neared $850 total (labor only).  So I estimate I'm saving close to $10,000 on this entire project by doing it myself... not bad! Smile [:)]

Saw that episode a couple months ago... really neat how they built the bridges with Earthquakes and landslides in mind... now if PennDot could just build roads and bridge with the Freeze/Thaw cycle in mind they may actually be able to build something that lasts longer than 5 years.... Morning all

Cool and overcast in Southern Ohio.

Just got back from taking grandkids to school and getting a haircut.  Off today and bride working 12-hour dayshift at the hospital.

Jim F-For several years I was a Instructional Technologist (fancy name for a trainer) but it was in one location.  You make a lot of contacts in the training world.  I have been turning down a job with one outfit for four years because of the travel.  I can retire with full benefits in 18 months.  After that I may go the contract trainer route, because our plant is going to be ramping up a new process that I’m working on now and the contractor will be working at the plant where I am now working on that process.  Going the contract trainer route I can make about 30% more than I’m now making, and have the retirement benefits.  What I’m saying is training is a great field to get into.  Especially HazMat, Incident Command, Emergency Preparedness, RadCon specialties.

Chuck-Tried Advil for the aches?  When weather turns cold and the knees start to keep me up at night the Advil helps knock the edge off.

Jim-Good looking hygienists defiantly would make the dentist visit more pleasurable.

Brent-About half the toilets I’ve pulled ended up needing flooring work done, so I go in expecting the worse.  Sounds like you’re repairing it the right way.  If I may suggest when you replace the wax ring get the ones with the sleeve, less prone to leakage.

Doug- Your daughter’s friend is an unfortunate statistic.  I was reading something the other day about causal effects of troubled kids, the lack of a positive male figure in the kid’s life has negative effects, and the effect is more pronounced in girls than boys.  Even if you and your family can be a hopeful sign it would be good for the girl.  I will pray for her and your family.

Need to complete some homework for class this weekend, and then work on forms.  Kind of wish it would rain to have an excuse to work on the layout some.

Need to go.  May God bless

Jim

Well, there goes another set of trains lost. Laugh [(-D]

Morning.  Been watering.  Neighbor suddenly turned up his stero and started shouting out the window.  Then he called Town Hall and reported I was wtering after 10:00 AM [at 10:03].  Town Hall called and said, "You've got a well don't you?"  I said, "Yes."  Laugh [(-D]  I do have one.  I can tell he is not doing good as he has this, I'm mad and stomping determined walk.  Off to Dr. to get flu shot this PM.  Town Board Meeting tonight.  May hit the State Fair while I am 5 blocks away at Dr's office.  Wife left free ticket and special lot parking pass.  If she can get there in a timely manner, I will go.  She has to work the USDA booth tonight.  Has worked fair every day but Saturday.  Tiring but lots of comptime to take off during Christmas.  That way, when she retires last of Dec., she gets paid for all her vacation accumilated.  No scenery painting today.  Later.

A quick good morning from a dark and rainy Chicago. Put together my for-sale list last night. Ran the 520 and its train. Tried to add the track-cleaning car to the consist but the old boy just didn't have the omph to pull it.

Was awakened late last night to drive out in the rain to pick up the daughter's friend who was kicked out of the house. Thought hard about it - didn't want to get in the middle of her stuff with her folks (I suspect dramatic license on her and my daughter's parts), but didn't want her trying to walk to the boyfriend's house or sleeping under some playground equipment. All seemed to be well this morning...

Morning All - The countdown is on, initial activities well underway I'm sure.  Lists are being developed, funds being collected, all the recycling centers have been visited.  Roy is probably on the way.  Extemely envious, I think it was a mistake to go this past spring, now I know what I'm missing.  Gotta go again!!See about putting together a shopping list for John to fill.  Enough on York......  Hope everyone has a GREAT time !!!

Oh, thinking about it, I called Just Trains this morning to confirm all the information I had on file with them is still valid.  I anticipate shipping to begin the end of the month on the Big Boy, maybe even with Legacy.

Talked to John last night, he was calling to check on my layout expansion plans and how they were working.  I had to inform him about the change in direction.  Enjoyed our conversation.

Post Comments:

Roy, Know you have been real busy, but the concern was related to my post on pg 600, regarding my layout expansion plans.  BTW Hope your week isn't to stressful, give my best to George, (still love the Mikado).

Jim T -Those pics are great of the 2343's, are they running as good as they look?

Jim F - Definetly stay away from all those trips, they are really hard on everyone!  Just ask Marty and Roy.  When I spent a month in Ariz last year is was way too long.  It felt like I didn't have a life.  And what would happen to Chewy????

Doug - Hope you have great success with the Thomas acquistions, must be for your youngest.  I too see how some of Chris's friends parents treat the kids, and it really makes me cringe.  Most of all, the lack of involvement and it reflects in the kids attitudes, trying to get attention anyway they can.  Too bad there isn't some parent qualification requirements.  Just look at the advice Jumijo gave Kurt on raising kids, now that is parenting!

Laz - I will be watching for you at York, I'll buy you dinner when I see you!

Mike C - I'm sure Lucas appreciates your help, that's great.  I would expect MTH have a catalog announcement for Tinplate this week.

Wes- Sounds like a great trip! How about a thread with pictures?

Brent - Now your getting the hang of it!!!  Simple jobs are not suppose to be simple, the ratio of planning hours to actual hours is suppose to be 12-14:1,  Only thing is, you can't fix other stuff when you run into unexpected tasks.  The idea is that everything gets delayed by a factor of 2.

Now I know whats going on with Jumijo and Chief, they are up late at night watching Skinamax and HBO After Dark, that explains falling asleep in the chair and all the reclinerizing.

Keith, Keep up the great posts, really enjoy them, glad to see your back to posting more.

Chief, BTW hows things going with the neighbor??

Time to get to work, going to take a bunch of 2006 and 2007 catalogs and just browse, maybe cut the pictures out and spread them around and plan a psuedo York experience.

With all of the advice that I got from people here, I overdressed a little, and was warm.  It was 32 degress when I woke up to make the drive down out the mountain into Durango that morning.  It was just a perfect day.  By 5pm, I was down to a long sleeve Tshirt.  I have 2.5Gb of pictures and video to go through and post, so stay tuned.  I was looking through them last night and my wife commented on how some of them look like a calendar picture.  When there is that much awesome scenery in one photo, it's hard not to get good pictures.
