DougDG, Yes I was like you on this one, Years ago I would of gone nuts about the car verse truck deal but all I said was " it could happen to anybody " and then I went into . It is what it is and whenever I dump the guilt thing on her she ends up making my life miserable. So no point.  

Jeffery, I think I may not be too far from a new PC as mine is about14 years old now and was a referbish when I got it. We did swap out the hard drive about 5 years ago.

Good morning. It's 52°F with 95% humidity. There's a small chance of rain today. The high will be 78°F.


Well I've learned a bit more about Windows 8, having played around with it for a few hours. I still haven't found an uninstall utility. It's gotta be hidden in that mess somewhere. There's a small booklet that came with the computer, little bigger than a pamphlet entitled 'Windows 8 Basics'. It has some very helpful information about some things you might do every day including information on using touch gestures. That's nice to know about but it's absolutely useless to me as my old monitor doesn't support it in any way, shape or form. It also explains how to add things, move things around, displaying things, closing things but nowhere does it give even a hint about how to uninstall something. Not even the faintest hint of a clue. Sherlock Holmes would be baffled! Oh well, I'll keep looking. Maybe I'll find something that can make the screen revert to the Classic Windows display. You never know what might be buried in there.

Speaking of new things, I also have a new phone for my trailer, new to me anyway. When my sister and her daughter were clearing out one of the closets in the west wing they came across a laundry basket full of phones, all identical, all still in their boxes, never opened. The only identification was a model number on the box. I looked it up online and it turns out they're talking caller ID phones. I don't know where my father got them (he can't remember) but since they were going to be tossed out I snitched one for myself. It works great. Much better than the cheap Wal-Mart special I've been using the past few years. Since my Magicjack already has Caller ID (blows this phones caller ID out of the water in all respects) I turned off the phones caller id feature. It's enough for me that it rings which is more than I can say for the cheapie that I was using. I had that POC set up so the ringtone came through the computer. That was the only way I could hear it. Now I have a phone that not only rings, I can hear it in the back over the TV, the fans, the a/c unit, etc and it has fourteen different ringtones. That's a big step up for me. I live so far beneath the poverty line I have to look up a few miles to see it! So a lot of things many people consider basic seem like luxuries to me.

Oh well, enough about all that. I've got other things to worry about.

A busy day. I have a few chores to do and then a big project to work on. I will be busy with this for a few days. Not much going on with trains. Maybe this weekend.

Indians start regular season today. First home game next Monday.

JefE - good start on thinning the herd. I've got a few train items that need to go, namely a KW, the Williams NW2, and then a set I'm sending on to a friend. I try a get rid of one item I've got in storage each week I'm off. That way by the time I move the rest of the stuff, the things I want to get rid of will already be gone. Have yet to actually sell anything on ebay yet.

I think I may swap the Highline and Hedrick divisions of the Mt. Graham & Arizona Eastern. I'm no longer running trains on the desk downstairs since it now has a computer on it. I think the 3 X 5 will be a better fit for spanning the benches down there. Plus this will give me a bit more room to try out some switches. At home I'm just running the Marx stuff anyway which would do fine w/ the smaller real estate.

Got a bit done today, did a lunch for the "Better-Half's" hen gathering today. While they were having there meeting I spent my time in the train room servicing a couple of new Williams diesels that are being added to the club's service fleet, track cleaning/ emergency back-ups/ etc. Why do the manufacturers seem to be so stingy on the grease in the gear boxes ? Think I've found more ear wax on a Q-Tip than was in those gear boxes.

Kev, Don't feel to bad about the car damage. My Better-Half side swiped my truck not once but twice, to add insult to injury my truck still had the temporary tag on that they issue upon new vehicle purchase. When she told me what she had done I really laid the guilt on her by saying "No sweat it's just a truck". She had figured I would hit the ceiling, which I wanted to do, but as long as we've been together what the heck.

Time to think about bed, nite all.

Well my old computer is well and truly dead. The main board and processor are fried. How it happened I don't know. Old age probably. It was however obsolete and had reached the end of the road on software and hardware compatibility with the new stuff that's out now.

I was wondering how I was going to get another computer. That question was answered this morning. My father bought me a new HP Pavilion computer. It's a 64 bit system with a 1TB hard drive, 8GB RAM, Intel i5-2320 quad-core processor and a DVD/RAM drive among other devices. It didn't include a monitor but seems happy with my old MAG DJ700 CRT. An external USB DVD burner that's Win8 compatible will be on the shopping list.

Oh yeah, that's right. This thing has Windows 8. I absolutely loathe Windows 8. To me it seems like it was designed by a 5 year old finger painting with invisible ink! Everything is hidden away but I'm slowly finding it. Since very little of the stuff in this system will work with XP I guess I better get used to it. It also needs a better keyboard. This flat as a flipping board HP keyboard is the pits! The keys are very nearly the same level as the surrounding surface and I can't rest my fingers against the sides of them

I also turned off the Norton anti-virus in favor of AVG 2013. I don't see why I should be saddled with an antivirus program I don't like. I already know how to use the AVG so it was a fast pick. If the Norton program starts making noise about being disabled I'll see about uninstalling it, though I haven't foun d the uninstall utility for it yet.

See y'all tomorrow provided I can get this thing started without having to go through the first seven steps of the ballet.

So wife and I get back from a nice sit down lunch and the grocery shopping and I back the truck up to the house garage and we unload it. A bit later wifey tells me she is going to get gas for her car. She comes in and asked me if I can move the truck out of the way, I say sure and move it into the shed. She comes out and is looking at the back of the truck and said I hit your truck! April fools right.   Wrong she did hit my truck but in the trailer hitch so it is cool, but then I look at her car. Silverado 1 Torrent 0,                   . Oh well so much for that, the car did not fair too well. I will need to get an estiment later this week.

My first post on the April pot, and it's only April 1!  I think I mentioned that I am selling some (why did I ever buy that stuff) on the bay.  First item went for a lot more than my "buy it now price"  looking good.  First I've sold anything there in years.  Hope to thin things out to the point where I can run everything I have occasionally.  Have a great April, I think Spring is about here.

Went down into the train room and started cleaning up some more and came across the 397 coal loader went to put it up and said hmmm let me take this apart and clean it. Man there was a ton of grease down in the bottom where the gears where but I believe the wrong type it reminded me of the red grease we used to pack wheel barrings but this was almost black and sticky so probably was just old. cleaned it all out cleaned the armature and all put it back together( will reapply grease where needed and oil when I replace the belt thats not there as it disintegrate the other night while playing with it) any way it is now running and running good.

one less thing to worry about now not sure if I'm going to keep and use or not. I do have the N&W opperating coal hopper and plenty of hoppers and gondola's

April 1st was my sisters birthday.(1941/1998) She went through a lot of foolishness every year but got used to it. At least no one in the family forgot when it was. I have been out for a hair cut and yes Chief I had both of them trimmed. Also filled the car with gas. It came out to 26 MPG, I can live with that....Happy April Fools Day......S.J.

  On Friday we all got bad news of the NAVY SEAL that died in the mishap out in Arizona.  That SEAL was named BRENT SHADLE.  I had taught him woodworking in MS and HS.  That's all he wanted to do with his life was to be a SEAL and take after his brother.  He was 31 yrs. old and E7 SEAL, great kid, played basketball and soccer in HS.  He was part of the famed SEAL TEAM 6 that took out bin lauden.  He leaves behind a wife and two children.  Prayers for you BRENT SHADLE you did the best job you could and now protect us from above.  Big Salute to you SIR.  Thank you.
